Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
A message on waiting on God and watching. Samaria’s famine, Saul’s impatience before Samuel came, and the disciples sleeping in Gethsemane show what happens when we give in to pressure. God calls His people to be watchmen, to rise and warn, and to wait for His timing.
Who gives the growth?
Short answer: Paul planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. God is the one who brings the increase.
▶ 0:00 In the scriptures first Corinthians three verse six Paul writes and he says I planted Paul saying I planted Apollos watered but God gave the growth and one of the things that we want to recognize this morning is that God is the one that we depend on to do the work to bring the growth he is empowerment his everything that he does is so good and we’ve got to lean on him and then it goes on to say neither he who plants does anything nor mediate nor he who waters but God who gives the increase and this is Paul talking about himself Paul and apollo’s they were Paul was a an apostle when we look at the Bible he was a big deal he was doing miracles handing out handkerchiefs and that was hid healing people and this is what he says about himself neither he who plants or he who waters is anything it’s all about God who gives the increase God is doing the work and that’s very important for today in our and our day for pastors and ministers to realize that God’s the one doing the work word we’re not we’re not we’re not anything now he who plants and he waters are one and each one will receive his own reward according to his labor so there’s a reward in.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 3:6-8 (NKJV)
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
— 1 Corinthians 3:6-8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:00How do we get rewards in heaven?
Short answer: By laboring in the field for the kingdom of God, bringing people to Him.
▶ 1:29 Laboring for the kingdom of God if you want a reward in heaven this is plain if you think in the scriptures all man I want so these rewards well how do I get them this is making it plain laboring in the field. That means bringing people to the kingdom of God that means some type of witnessing some type of encouraging someone to accept Christ challenging people being a part of a church that is is getting the message out that is speaking truth that is what this is talking about there is a reward. We also have the subject of watching in Ezekiel 3 verse 17 God says to Ezekiel son of man I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel therefore hear a word from my mouth and give them warning.
What if we don’t warn the wicked?
Short answer: If you give him no warning, the wicked man will die in his iniquity and his blood will be on your hands.
▶ 2:32 From me. When I say to the wicked you shall surely die and you give them no warning nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way to save his life that same wicked man will die in his iniquity and his blood will be on your hand that’s a lot of words but plainly if you don’t warn people that their sin is taking them to hell. Their blood is on your hands as you’re reminded recently Lazarus and the rich man they there was there was some distance between there was a a a big expanse between them but they could still see each other Lazarus could see the rich man and when you’re in heaven you’re gonna be able to see oh I didn’t I didn’t tell him about Christ I could have told him he’s down there I didn’t tell him and that’s a big responsibility that we have so this morning we’re going to talk about king Jehovah king Saul and the disciples and how they waited or didn’t wait and how they watched or didn’t watch.
Scripture in this part
Ezekiel 3:17-18 (NKJV)
“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.
— Ezekiel 3:17-18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 2:32What happened when Samaria was besieged?
Short answer: Syria encamped around the city and the famine was so severe that two mothers argued over whose child they would eat. We should be shocked at that.
▶ 3:47 King Jehovah in second Kings verse 6 sorry chapter 6 verse 24 Samaria was besieged some areas where the king was that was the city of the king for Israel and it was besieged that means that the army of Syria was encamped around the city making sure they couldn’t go in or out they had probably stopped up the water any kind of you know that’s not a good thing you can you imagine America being we have boats all around us from other countries that are about to attack us that’s besieging they stop our trade ships and we can’t get anything coming in or going out there was a great famine. And. It says in the scriptures that it says in 2nd Kings that the donkey’s head was sold for a lot of money because I mean how many hey we go down the street we can go to jack in the box a dollar you can get some food right see they were getting a donkey’s head for a lot of money dove droppings for five shekels yuck I mean this is dire circumstances we don’t want to talk about this but this.
▶ 5:07 Is what was happening oh. It’s awful and this is the part this is the part where the mom brought up to the king that they had an argument over whose kid they were going to eat I mean shocking right and we should be shocked at today how people are killing kids after their being born you should be shocked by that okay that we’re gonna have a discussion whether you’re gonna be alive or not what do you what what discussion. And it shocked king johan and he was so upset that he wanted to go and kill Elijah the prophet and this is one of the statements he said and first he says God do so to me and more also at the head of Elijah remains on him today now what you have to understand is king Jehoram [unclear]as a evil king he was not as evil as a have his father but he was still evil.
Scripture in this part
2 Kings 6:24-29 (NKJV)
And it happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria. And there was a great famine in Samaria; and indeed they besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and one-fourth of a kab of dove droppings for five shekels of silver. Then, as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!” And he said, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or from the winepress?” Then the king said to her, “What is troubling you?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ So we boiled my son, and ate him. And I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him’; but she has hidden her son.”
— 2 Kings 6:24-29 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:47Who did the king blame?
Short answer: He went after the prophet, the church leader. We want to blame and attack the church.
▶ 6:15 All right and so now here he is he’s gonna go attack Elijah the prophet. He’s gonna go after you know the church leader you know we want to blame the church who want to attack the church it’s their fault and this is what he says this is very important right here sure this disaster is from the Lord why should I wait for the Lord any longer. Why should I wait and what that means is he’s going to say forget this I’m not going to wait in the city anymore we’re gonna take our army we’re going to go attack Syria and we’re gonna be free from this famine and then besieging us. And. So Elijah has a word from God tomorrow about this time.
Scripture in this part
2 Kings 6:31 (NKJV)
Then he said, “God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on him today!”
— 2 Kings 6:31 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:15What did God promise Samaria?
Short answer: Food would be cheap the next day: fine flour for a shekel. God had a solution if they would wait.
▶ 7:15 You’re gonna be able to get food cheap. You’re getting dove droppings for five shekels you’re gonna get be able to get flour for a shekel easy. So everything’s going to be food is going to be solved I’m gonna provide a solution but you got to wait for tomorrow and the story goes that some lepers went up to the camp God made it sound like an army was coming to attack the camp of Syria and the syrians fled the camp and they left all their food they left all their belongings they left their clothes their garments and Israel went up and they plundered the tents of the syrians see Syria didn’t get hurt Israel didn’t get hurt why because the king waited. Waited on God they had to deal with a lot of discomfort and people made decisions based on their discomfort.
▶ 8:15 You know you don’t have to eat your kids or something you can do gotta be another solution. But you’ve also got understand that God is also judging this nation but when I’m trying to point out here as though even though Jehoram [unclear]as evil even though the Israelites were evil because they waited on God he brought them a solution. They people went out and plundered the tents of the syrians and that’s pretty it’s pretty shocking for this guy it’s evil king he what he listened to Elijah he had other people telling him don’t listen to this guy but he listened to Elijah that that that’s good Bible says even a fool is wise counted wise when he keeps his mouth shut and his ears open doesn’t say ears open but you know if your mouth shut your ears are open and he received deliverance for Samaria that day.
Scripture in this part
2 Kings 7:1 (NKJV)
Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the LORD: ‘Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.’ ”
— 2 Kings 7:1 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:15Can God help someone who isn’t a Christian?
Short answer: Yes, if you will wait on Him and come to Him saying, God, I surrender to You.
▶ 9:20 So if you don’t believe in Jesus if you’re not a Christian God can help you if you will wait on him what if you will come to him and say God I surrender to you you got to accept him that’s what we’re talking about but this is for everyone first Samuel we’re going to go on to king Saul he’s got his big army king Saul. And second verse Samuel 13 verse 3. Jonathan attacked the garrison of the Philistines. Jonathan is Saul’s son he attacked the garrison of the Philistines and then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land because there’s trouble.
▶ 10:14 Jonathan stirred up trouble and now they’re all in trouble and it says that Israel became an abomination to the Philistines the Philistines hated him because of this thing and the Israel was called together to fight and it says that the Philistines with a countless multitude tons of people as far as the eye can see. Thirty thousand chariots six thousand horsemen can you imagine America being. Attacked by a really huge army of people I mean we that would that would that would put some fear in you right and these people were afraid.
What did Saul do when he was afraid?
Short answer: The people followed him trembling; he waited seven days, then made his own way and offered the sacrifice.
▶ 11:11 First Samuel 13 verse 5 all the people followed him followed Saul trembling they were afraid they were scared and you have some choices when you’re afraid when you’re scared you make choices and then he waited 7 days according to the time set by Samuel but Samuel did not come. The prophet of God did not come. He didn’t come on the seventh day like Lord of the rings you know gandalf said I’ll be there blah blah blah and he shows up if you know that movie and he’s all in his light it’s glorious for at the right time and he saves everybody. But here’s Samuel. Waited seven days I’m sorry Saul waited seven days and Samuel you know did not come when I think about this I think about.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 13:5-9 (NKJV)
Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth Aven. When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits. And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering.
— 1 Samuel 13:5-9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:11Should we rush God?
Short answer: No. We want God to hurry up, but it may take a little longer; ministers can start making it their own way to keep the people.
▶ 12:10 The move of God that is coming next you know sometimes we want God to hurry up we want him to come and God you’re supposed to move every thirty years come on gods where were you at we need you. Well it may take a little longer. You know and I might be dead no I might be 80 years old and the people were scattered they started to scatter just like Jesus Christ when he was crucified the disciples scattered they were afraid. And saw offered the burnt offering him self what he wasn’t supposed to do he did something he wasn’t supposed to do he went against God’s word and that’s going a lot a lot of that’s going on in our day people are not waiting for the spirit of God they’re not waiting for God to.
▶ 13:18 To fulfill his promise and then they’re making their may they’re making it their own way ministers are changing it we got to keep the people I got I got to keep the Israelites you know in the building I got to keep the Israelites here I got to keep him that’s what Saul was trying to do and church leaders are trying to do the same thing we got to keep him so I’ll change God’s word that’s what Saul did he changed God’s word. And we can’t do that and Saul told Samuel Samuel came and says what have you done and Saul said because I saw the people were scattered and that you didn’t come it’s your fault God and the Philistines gathered themselves together there was an enemy coming so because of fear because I had to wait I changed and didn’t follow God’s work and we can’t do that amen.
What did Samuel tell Saul?
Short answer: You have done foolishly; your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought a man after His own heart.
▶ 14:24 So this is Samuel’s reply to Saul he said you have done foolishly you have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God your kingdom shall not continue the Lord has sought for himself a man after his own heart and that’s important do we have a heart after God to obey him to follow him are we devoted to him. The people that received food from him remember how he fed the 5000 and the 4000 there were disciples there that followed him because of the food are we following Jesus just for the goodies. Or do we have a heart after God.
▶ 15:18 Now this is a different king king Saul the spirit of God came on Saul Saul experienced some amazing things in God not like king Jehoram [unclear] he was out to lunch he was just sinning but king Saul he had experienced the spirit of the Lord and he was anointed by God to become king Samuel anointed Saul. And David. Called Saul the lord’s anointed you know when people ask the question man or say this statement that man wrote the Bible do we say that Saul was anointed by Samuel or what see David called him the lord’s anointed he is anointed by God to become king see God wrote the scriptures and he used people.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 13:13-14 (NKJV)
And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”
— 1 Samuel 13:13-14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 14:24Why did Saul lose the kingdom?
Short answer: He gave in to the pressure of the people and the enemy, and after losing the kingdom he did not change.
▶ 16:18 Saul gave in to pressure. He gave in to the pressure of the people of the enemy that came and you know that’s tough that’s hard. And. Saul. After losing the kingdom after losing his kingdom he did not change and he did not serve the new king what did he do to the new king he attacked and tried to kill the new king. Saul tried to kill David saw pursued David to kill him. Just like the the Pharisees tried to kill Jesus Christ. On to the disciples we’re on number three.
What did Jesus ask in Gethsemane?
Short answer: My soul is exceedingly sorrowful even unto death; stay here and watch with Me. The disciples slept.
▶ 17:13 Matthew 26 verse 38 through 46. Jesus is about to be crucified this is the night before and he’s going to the garden of Gethsemane and he’s gonna pray and this is what he says my soul is exceedingly sorrowful even unto death and he told the disciples wait here and he also tells him something very important watch with me watch with me and he went a little farther and fell on his face and prayed and then he came back to his disciples and found them what sleeping. And he said to Peter what could you not wash with me for one hour.
▶ 18:11 Now listen. Jesus Christ is the son of God he can hear people’s thoughts he said to one disciple I saw you under the fig tree you see Jesus right now he doesn’t need a watch looking out are there people coming are there people coming because Jesus doesn’t know he knows exactly where judas is he knows exactly where he’s stepping he knows where those people are that band that are coming to get him he knows when they’re coming he knows when they’re gonna be there he can see them he doesn’t need a watch. This scripture is for us this scripture is for the disciples. Matthew 26 verse 41 watch and pray lest you enter into temptation.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 26:38-46 (NKJV)
Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.” He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
— Matthew 26:38-46 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 17:13What temptation does a Christian face?
Short answer: The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak; for a Christian the temptation is not to pursue God and righteousness.
▶ 19:07 The spirit is willing and the flesh is weak temptation if you’re not a Christian there’s temptation to sin sin will take you to hell if you are a Christian there is a temptation not to pursue God and righteousness. If. You are a Christian and you’re pursuing right there is a temptation to fall asleep. And. Not warn people of the coming judgement. And there’s more temptations there’s temptations all over right there’s all kinds of things. And so Jesus comes a second time he went and prayed he went away and prayed again and he count he found them asleep again for their eyes.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 26:41 (NKJV)
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
— Matthew 26:41 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 19:07Are your eyes heavy?
Short answer: God asks him: Mike, are you tired of serving? Rise, let us be going.
▶ 20:06 Read that with me their eyes were heavy and God is asking us I mean he’s asking me this stuff when I’m reading it when I’m looking at it Michael are your eyes heavy are you tired of serving uh are you tired of all this I mean what I’m 32 I mean you guys have more excuse and I do some of you you guys could be really tired of all this right. But God is asking that question are we tired. Of keeping watch of giving the warning to people. Tired of maybe the rejection tired of you know for me it’s like you need to you need to open your eyes buddy. Start keeping watch start sounding the trumpet so he left them he went away again and he prayed the third time saying the same words so he came and did this three times.
▶ 21:10 And he said are you still sleeping and resting behold the hours at hand and the son of man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners rise let us be going and like I said when I’m reading this stuff God is asking me mike are you asleep. Are you. Refusing to wake up and warn people are you afraid you know there’s a lot more pressure now than there was years ago on certain issues there’s a lot more pressure there’s a lot more consequence. But our are we sleeping. The hours at hand the son of man is being betrayed Christ he’s being betrayed his word is being betrayed.
▶ 22:04 Sinful people they are. Against his word. And. Jesus says rise let us be going rise let us be going let’s move on. And. So I go back to this Ezekiel 3 verse 17 son of man I made you a watchman for the house of Israel hear the hear a word from my mouth and give them warning when I say the wicked you shall surely die and you given them no warning or speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way to save his life that same wicked will die and his blood will be required at your hand I don’t want to be so afraid like that Israelites were that I scattered from the king I.

— Matthew 26:43-46 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 20:06What is the call to sleepers?
Short answer: Awake you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. God wants to raise every non-believer like Lazarus.
▶ 22:58 Don’t want to be so caught up in my own business that I refuse to pull out the trumpet and start warning the people of the coming judgement of Jesus Christ and what his word says. Ephesians chapter 5:14 awake you who sleep arise from the dead and Christ will give you light speaking to people who don’t know Christ or not are not Christians have not accepted Christ God is saying hey wake up when Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave he was Lazarus was dead as a doornail but he said come. Arise.
▶ 23:53 Oh that’s right Lazarus Lazarus come forth amen and that word Lazarus heard oh gosh God raised him up he came out of that grave and God wants to do the same thing with every non-believer he wants them to rise from the grave. Wants to make their spiritual man alive first Corinthians 15:34 awake to righteousness and do not sin the church in America and all over the world we’ve got to be challenged to move forward and further and not just stay oh I’m out of the grave now and I’m gonna stay right by the tomb and the door. I’m not going to go anywhere else or do anything else no. You got to grow God we come before you this morning Jesus.
