Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil—November 29, 2020: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Pastor David G. Kincer takes a closer look at the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The tree was not evil, and Jesus was God’s Plan A before creation. Mature believers have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Known by their fruit, they become trees of righteousness that rebuild ruins as God restores.

Scripture in this part
Psalm 65:5-6 (NKJV)
By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us, O God of our salvation, You who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth, And of the far-off seas; Who established the mountains by His strength, Being clothed with power;
— Psalm 65:5-6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:49What are we testing?
Short answer: Whether Ecclesiastes 1:9 is true: what has been done will be done again.
▶ 25:33 We’re going to ask ourself is this verse true this verse says what has been done will be done again. What has been will be again and there is nothing new under the sun so we’re going to take a closer look at the tree of knowledge of good and evil and see if this verse is true for our source of truth we’re going to use all scriptures remember the Bible says all things happen to those people in the Old Testament as examples. And they were written the whole Old Testament was written for our admonition our learning our warning upon whom the ends of the world have come.
▶ 26:28 Romans 15:4 says whatever things were written before all the Old Testament was written for our learning that we through patience. And comfort of the scriptures might have hope. In second Timothy 3:16 all scripture is given by the inspiration of God all scripture is profitable for doctrine for reproof correction instruction and righteousness that the man of God might be perfect. Might be complete. Might be mature full grown. Thoroughly furnished thoroughly equipped unto every good work. In Romans 16:25 the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the Revelation of the mystery.
Scripture in this part
Romans 15:4 (NKJV)
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
— Romans 15:4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 26:28What is a mystery?
Short answer: Something hidden since the world began, now revealed.
▶ 27:24 See a mystery is something that was hid. And it’s been kept secret since the world began since Genesis 1 this gospel of Christ has been secretly. In the Old Testament in parables and metaphors and similes and things like that but now. The gospel of Christ is made clear by the prophetic scriptures to all nations by those Old Testament scriptures now they are made manifest made plain made clear. In Matthew 13:35 Jesus said I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world so we’re going to use all scripture.
▶ 28:18 To look at. A closer look at the tree of knowledge of good and evil this morning and see if everything has been done again all right as Ecclesiastes says. In Colossians 2:16 the feasts the new moons the sabbaths or the law’s sacrifices are a shadow of good things to come they’re not the real thing they are examples of the things the copies of the things and if we want to know what those things mean then we use all scripture to understand them Colossians 2:16 Hebrews 10:1 and in the Old Testament Isaiah chapter 1 verses 1 through 17. Tells us that the sacrifices and the new moons and the sabbaths God did not want they were never his purpose.
What was Moses’ tabernacle?
Short answer: A copy and shadow of heavenly things.
▶ 29:17 And Hebrews 8 verse 1 through 5 Moses’s tabernacle serve as an example and a shadow of heavenly things so everything in the Old Testament teaches us of Jesus Christ the gospel of Christ and heavenly things it isn’t amen so we’re going to use the whole Bible to take a look at the knowledge the tree of knowledge of good and evil in Genesis chapter 2 verse 9 and Genesis chapter 3 verse 1 through 22 God made to grow all trees number one they were pleasant to the eye. Number two they were good for food so that means the tree of life and the tree of knowledge was pleasant to the eye and good for food. The tree of life was in the middle of the garden with the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Scripture in this part
Hebrews 8:5 (NKJV)
who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
— Hebrews 8:5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 29:17What did God command?
Short answer: Eat of every tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
▶ 30:14 And they could eat of all the trees except God said don’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they had one law to keep. Just one don’t eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil one test one temptation. And they. Felt. Concerning the tree of life which we will be talking about next week you got to remember that Adam and Eve after God breathed into them that breath of life. They were going to live forever anyway. Are you there. They didn’t have to eat of that tree of life to live forever once God breathed his spirit of life into them just like you and I we’re going to live forever.
▶ 31:06 It’s just that not. Everyone. Is going to be with God now we know from the Scriptures in John 17:3. Jesus Christ gave us a definition of eternal life this is eternal life Jesus said that you might know the only true God there’s only one true God. And his son Jesus Christ so we know this. Eternal life. Is knowing God and Christ. This knowledge of good and evil the Bible doesn’t say that the tree was evil. It said the tree was the knowledge of good and evil didn’t say the tree was evil are you with me.
Scripture in this part
Genesis 2:16-17 (NKJV)
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
— Genesis 2:16-17 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 30:14Was the tree evil?
Short answer: No. It was pleasant to the eyes and good for food.
▶ 32:07 We read that in. It’s not an evil tree it’s pleasant to the eye it’s good for food. All right it’s good for food. But God said don’t eat it he gave one long one. All right. So. Eve. Coached by the Devil Satan himself the serpent took a second look at the tree of knowledge. Now you remember the Devil the serpent Satan he is a liar he was created a liar. From the beginning he was created. He is a deceiver he is an accuser he is a tempter okay that’s what that’s his job and he was created for that job all right.
▶ 33:10 So. Satan brings out and points her toward the tree of knowledge now her eyes see the tree of knowledge of good and evil that it was good for food just like God said before pleasant to the eye just as he said before. But also now she sees this tree is desirable to make one. Wine. This tree of knowledge. Will make you wise is there anything wrong with wisdom no interesting isn’t it when you just read the verses as they’re written and not try to interpret them and add your little notes. It’s amazing how simple it is isn’t it yes.
Scripture in this part
Genesis 3:6 (NKJV)
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
— Genesis 3:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 32:07What did God say after they ate?
Short answer: Man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil.
▶ 34:04 So she ate. Of the fruit of the tree. Her eyes were open. All right and Satan had said the liar himself had said if you eated this tree you’re going to become as God knowing good and evil. That’s what Satan told Eve. And he was right. Okay he even quoted some scripture when he was testing Jesus. During his time in the desert. Saying you know if you. Fall off of this pinnacle got to protect you because he won’t allow your foot to be hurt or one stone and you know nothing’s going to hurt you and you can make bread out of these stones see he was quoting scripture but he was using them deceitfully trying to get Christ to tempt God so even though Satan may speak a truth in the midst of his deception he’s still the deceiver.
▶ 35:14 All right so sure enough God himself said man is become like one of us. Isn’t that what we learned last week that we are God said let us make man in the image and the likeness of God isn’t that what we read okay God. Knows good and evil and for mankind to be like God we have. To know and have the knowledge of good and evil. So eating the tree of knowledge was God’s a plan. Not his b plan. Think about it.
▶ 36:08 Now the tree of knowledge now of good and evil it will make you wise and it’ll make you like God knowing good and evil it did not make Eve evil. She wasn’t an evil woman boy she ate about and horns grew out of her head. You know if you’re a bad person ah didn’t make her evil at all. Just the opposite she had the knowledge and so did Adam of good and evil and she became wise her eyes were open are you there church. Hallelujah so much for our Sunday school stories. Now. Let us continue. Plan a as I said. Was God’s plan from the beginning and I’m going to prove it to you okay.
▶ 37:06 We’re going to use all scripture and as we we’re allowed to use all scripture correct amen Revelations chapter 13 verse 8 the book of life of the lamb Jesus who was slain from the foundation of the world. When God created the heavens and the earth and said let there be light bam. Jesus was destined to. Die. Amen. This is before Eve ate the food ate the fruit of the tree of life. And there’s no record of Adam and Eve sinning again after that one. Fault. The Adam and Eve that tree didn’t make them evil that tree just made them like God knowing good and evil and they did good.
▶ 38:08 For over 900 years living on this earth. Hallelujah isn’t that powerful and why why could that be because Christ was slain before they were even created. God’s goal was for Jesus to come and die for sin before they were ever created. Isn’t that powerful. Hallelujah. Now. Let’s continue. We are redeemed with the precious blood of Christ in first Peter 1:19 a lamb without blemish or spot who was foreordained before. God made the heaven and the earth and said let there be light.
Scripture in this part
Genesis 3:22 (NKJV)
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”—
— Genesis 3:22 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 35:14Was Jesus God’s backup plan?
Short answer: No. He was foreordained before the foundation of the world — Plan A.
▶ 39:02 But was made manifest in these last days. Jesus was God’s goal Plan A before he ever said let there be a heaven let there be an earth and let there be light. Amen. Isn’t that powerful. That’s Plan A always has been Plan A John 17:24 Jesus prayed father you loved me before the foundation of the world. And it pleased the father the Bible says to bruise him to slay him for the sins of the people he was going to create. That was his plan before anything was set in order that we know of the natural stuff isn’t that a big amen now that is a supernatural God.
▶ 40:03 And to declare that statement in Ecclesiastes 1 9 what has been done will be done. There’s nothing new under the sun it takes a supernatural God to say that 3 000 years after the world was created and 3 000 years back from our day. That’s supernatural intervention amen we serve a real God. And we read and study and obey a real book. Ephesians 1:4 he God. Chose us in him Jesus before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and without blame before him in love he looked down the thousands of years and saw you.
▶ 40:58 Okay he saw you. Personally you. From the before the foundation of the world to make you holy without blame before him. The good part of the tree of life hallelujah I mean the good part of the tree is knowledge of good and evil. The knowledge of good and evil you don’t have to be evil. You can be good and he. Looked down. The eons of the future and saw every one of us and gave us the chance. To be holy before him know him and live forever with him amen beautiful the powerful God who can declare things from the beginning before they ever happen only God can do that now.
▶ 42:00 God’s Plan A is the one designed to work and works. Now. We saw it was done at the beginning is it going to be done again that’s what Ecclesiastes says. Go on to Hebrews 5:13. Which continues on in Hebrews 6 verses 1 through 2 verses 1 through 2 yeah. Strong meat the strong meat of the righteous belongs to them of full age here’s that word perfect again. You see everybody’s scared to death of the word perfect it just means full age mature. Complete. Okay.
▶ 42:53 God offers us more than salvation. He offers us love joy and peace he offers us to be good he offers us knowledge and wisdom he offers us self-control and all these things to be perfect is to inherit all the things that he’s offered you. Doesn’t mean you’re without flaws. Babies have flaws so do baby Christians have flaws. Children have flaws so do Christian children have flaw we come to Christ we’re born again as a babe not as a mature. Christian isn’t that right we grow. And as we partake of his inheritance what he’s promised us we grow into a full complete person.
▶ 43:48 With our flaws. We say things that we shouldn’t say but we’re not habitually sinners we don’t pre-meditate sin we just make mistakes. And people preach that you you know you’ve got to be saved and repent from sin or you’re going to go to hell then you get saved then they tell you you can’t help but sin no that’s not the way it is. He made us to be holy and righteous before him amen. Hallelujah. So. They’re of a full age they’re perfect they’re complete. Who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both what good and evil. They’re like God knowing.
Scripture in this part
1 Peter 1:20 (NKJV)
He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you
— 1 Peter 1:20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 39:02Ephesians 1:4 (NKJV)
just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
— Ephesians 1:4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 40:58Who discerns good and evil?
Short answer: Mature believers who by use have their senses exercised to discern both.
▶ 44:43 Good and evil do you see that. These mature Christians these mature followers of Christ they have pursued God and obtained the things that he said we can inherit. And one of those things is they know the difference between good and evil and they follow good amen they are partakers of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and they are a wise people because they do what is right. They live a righteous life just like we read that we were foreordained before the foundation of the world to be holy before God amen.
▶ 45:35 Hallelujah now that’s a powerful book folks that ain’t no fiction story and that ain’t no just the history book of the uh on the internet this week somebody a guy was trying to get me to read a book and it’s his his uh introductory to the book was the Old Testament was written for the Jews and a history of the Jews I said that’s not true it was written for me it was written for you amen. Not a history of the Jews the Jewish history is there. But this thing was written for our learning our example. Amen so we can know our God. Now. So now these people that are righteous they’re eating the meat of the word not the milk of the word they’ve passed the milk they we still drink milk.
▶ 46:27 You know once your baby gets weaned from milk doesn’t mean they stop drinking milk they just add solid food to it all right these people add the solid food of the word which is righteousness. Okay and part of that maturity is they know good and evil they are like God amen. Hallelujah. All right now. Matthew 7:17. Every tree every good tree. Bringeth forth good. Fruit. A corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit nor can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Scripture in this part
Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)
But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
— Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 44:43How do we know people?
Short answer: By their fruit; every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down.
▶ 47:24 All trees. Bringing not forth good fruit is cut down. And cast into the fire now is Jesus talking about trees. No he’s talking about people. A tree of knowledge of good and evil. Once you partake of the tree of knowledge and good and evil you have a choice. To be good. Or to be evil. Not to hurt people not to hurt yourself or to hurt people and hurt yourself you have a choice. And the ones that choose to do evil are cast into that fire. That lines up with the rest of the scriptures amen. So see we have two trees here.
▶ 48:19 Representing the tree of knowledge of good and evil some people are evil. And some people are good. And the ones that are evil are going to pay the price. Are you with me hallelujah again. Make the tree good Matthew 12:33 make the tree good. And make his fruit good or else make the tree corrupt. And his fruit corrupt. For the tree is known by his fruit. Hallelujah. See the tree didn’t make Eve and Adam evil did it if it would have they would have had the recording of their evilness in the Bible like keynes was and nimrod’s was they recorded the evil Adam and Eve didn’t do evil after that.
▶ 49:26 So. By the fruit you know them old generation of vipers he’s talking to the people that chose to do evil. How can you being evil speak good things. So we see that the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Came back what had been done will be done again in people. Amen. It happened again. Just like Ecclesiastes said it would. Now. Let’s go. To Isaiah 61 verse 3. Remember the mead of the righteous belongs to them of full age complete.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 7:19-20 (NKJV)
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
— Matthew 7:19-20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 47:24Who are the trees of righteousness?
Short answer: Those given beauty for ashes, the planting of the Lord.
▶ 50:22 Mature. Okay. Them we go to Isaiah 61:3 and find out who’s them. To give them in Zion. Okay. Now this is why we set the foundation for our teaching. Zion is a place on top of a mountain all right and people worship God there to give them in Zion beauty for ashes the all of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. God exchanged to these people beauty for ashes wasted lies he turned them into something beautiful.
▶ 51:15 Mourning into joy. Praise honor. In exchange for that spirit of heaviness he made them honorable. Valuable. So they might be called. Them they them might be called what trees of righteousness. The planting of the Lord that he might be glorified. You see. And that’s what Ecclesiastes says what was done will be done again. And here we have a people that choose righteousness and God gives them beauty for ashes.
▶ 52:10 Your life might have been a mess you come to Christ he makes you a beautiful person and a beautiful life you may be downcast in heaviness and depression he will lift you up and give you joy that no man can take away the Bible says he said the garment of praise that robe of righteousness that linen rope of righteousness over Revelation that garment of praise of valuable he’s going to make you a valuable person. An honorable person. All right for that spirit of heaviness now. Let’s look at who Zion is real quick yet. Hebrews 12:22. You them them okay.
Scripture in this part
Isaiah 61:3 (NKJV)
To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”
— Isaiah 61:3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 50:22Where have we come?
Short answer: To Mount Zion, the general assembly, and to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant.
▶ 53:06 You he’s talking about Christians followers of Christ New Testament you are come unto mount Zion. Now they hadn’t come to the natural mountain of Zion. But the writer said you have come to mount Zion and mount Zion synonymous terms synonyms from mount Zion the city of the living God the heavenly Jerusalem the innumerable company of angels to the general assembly and the what church of the firstborn who’s the firstborn Jesus Christ we come to him we are the church the church is Zion and we get beauty for ashes they’re all of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness amen that’s us. Trees of righteousness. Not corrupt trees.
▶ 54:01 Hallelujah. Which are written in heaven we come to God the judge of all and to the spirits of just men made perfect here it is again just men made perfect complete. And when you stand for justice when you stand for righteousness when you stand for right and truth. You are not only pursuing maturity and the inheritance of God you’re attaining it when you stand up against injustice in the world and stand up for justice. You. Are getting one of the ingredients that makes you perfect makes you complete in Christ amen and don’t we need more Christians standing up for justice publicly for those who are being abused and misused we Christians have got to grow to a place where we stand up publicly for people being treating right.
▶ 55:04 Hallelujah. And to the blood of sprinkling and the mediator of the new covenant which is Jesus. That’s mount Zion and folks he wants to make something beautiful I don’t care where you’re at this morning I don’t care if you’re down in the dumps I don’t care if you’re deep into sin I don’t care if you’ve backslidden or whatever God wants to come to you if you seek him he’ll turn your life around and make you beautiful he’ll give you joy that no man can take away amen yes hallelujah he’ll make something beautiful out of your life I don’t care where you’re at I don’t care if you need mental help emotional help physical help or spiritual help God is the healer and he’s out before the foundation of the world before he even created you he destined for you to be something beautiful something worthy something that’s worthy of praise in this earth he wants to turn your life around.
Scripture in this part
Hebrews 12:22-24 (NKJV)
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
— Hebrews 12:22-24 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 53:06What will they do?
Short answer: Rebuild the old ruins and raise up former desolations.
▶ 56:10 Amen and Ecclesiastes wrote this 3 000 years ago. They they them them. These people build the old waste places they raise up the former desolations. They repair the waste cities and desolations of many generations. These trees of righteousness these people that have eaten of the tree of knowledge of good and evil shun evil and follow righteousness and good you can tell them because they are builders not tear down there’s enough people tearing down the church these people are builders of the church amen.
▶ 57:06 They ra they raise up the former desolations these people that have backslidden and gone away from God they are restorers. They are not out there to destroy they’re out to restore. And they’re out to repair. Amen because God is a repairer God is a restorer and God is a builder amen. Hallelujah. And whatever you want from God today he’s offering himself to you as the musicians come. They will raise up the former desolations people are destroying their life and you can destroy your own life and if you’ve destroyed your own life. God wants to build you back.
▶ 58:03 If you’ve got some flaws in your life he wants to repair those flaws he’s not wanting to remove you out of his kingdom he wants to repair the flaws. Okay. He wants to restore. And as we sing out of Matthew. Seek you first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. All these things shall be what. Added don’t you think it’s time we started adding our inheritance to our life amen God has promised us so much and if we seek him and his righteousness as trees of righteousness. He will begin to add these things to our life if you want him to add things to your life this morning if you want him to meet with you wherever you’re at will you stand with me and let’s sing this out of Matthew the sermon on the mount seek you first the kingdom of god.
Scripture in this part
Isaiah 61:4 (NKJV)
And they shall rebuild the old ruins, They shall raise up the former desolations, And they shall repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations.
— Isaiah 61:4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 56:10What does God add?
Short answer: Seek first the kingdom and all these things shall be added.
▶ 59:16 And all these things shall be added. It shall be given unto you. Seek and he shall. Find. Knock and the door shall be opened unto.
▶ 1:00:12 You. This is why God gave us these spiritual laws. To pray ask. To praise him to worship him in spirit and in truth he inhabits the praises of his people that’s why he says to read the word of God and study the word of God these are the spiritual principles that bring God to us. And we begin to take on his nature we begin to inherit his promises so as we sing it again just draw close to God where you’re at just close your eyes and just draw close to him he is willing and ready to reach out and touch you and meet your needs this.

Lord we make mistakes in our life but you’d make no mistake you’re without spot you’re without wrinkle or any such thing. And we’re thankful Lord through the knowledge of good and evil that we can turn to good. We can turn to righteousness. And you can make us trees in this world of righteousness that other people can look at. And be drawn to you. Thank you Lord. We ask big things of you today Lord Jesus. ▶ 1:07:09 Jesus Christ the Bible says we can be born again can have salvation through him. So let’s bow our heads and let’s be reminded of the scriptures the scriptures say in Romans 3:23 the wages of sin is death the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord scripture saying 6 23 Romans 6:23 that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God we have fallen short we’ve sinned and fallen short and the the gift of the God Jesus Christ he’s the solution for our sin scriptures say in first John 1:9 if he is faithful and just to forgive us of our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness if we confess with our mouth he is faithful and just to cleanse us so this morning if you would like to accept Jesus into your heart maybe we were going that way of sin that he was talking about and we want to be turned from that you want that this morning just raise your hand right where you’re at and just repeat this prayer after me say Lord Jesus.
