Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Pastor David G. Kincer turns to Paul and 1 Corinthians 14 to describe a Spirit-empowered, orderly church service. Gifts and love work together; tongues should not be forbidden; every member comes with something to contribute. The word, prophecy, prayer in the Spirit and full worship convict hearts, so an unbeliever declares that God is truly among you.
How did Paul meet God?
Short answer: On the road to Damascus he saw a great light and heard a voice; he had an encounter with God by the Spirit. God is not partial; He can do it for us too.
▶ 0:00 We’re gonna continue talking about the river in this picture you will see Paul or Saul as his name was now on the road to Damascus and he saw a great light and a voice out of the light since all why do you persecute me and he said who are you. And Jesus revealed himself to him Paul saw was actually persecuting the church but the church is Jesus here on earth see so.
▶ 0:37 Paul had an encounter with God by the spirit of God Jesus revealed to him now you got to remember folks God is not partial. He can’t come to Paul and reveal himself to him and not reveal himself to everyone it’s just we want the experience Paul had but see Peter didn’t have the experience Paul had Peter was just fishing and God said follow me bam Jesus said follow me and Peter responded see we can all have that encounter we can have that spirit moving in our life and a meeting with God but it may be in an entirely different way than your brother and your sister okay but God’s impartial he can’t just reveal himself to one person he has to reveal himself to all and so we’re going to go to first Corinthians 14 verse 1.
Scripture in this part
Acts 9:3-5 (NKJV)
As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”
— Acts 9:3-5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:00Why does 1 Corinthians 14 follow 12 and 13?
Short answer: Chapter 12 is the gifts, 13 is love, and 14 is how they work together in a service; the Corinthians had gifts but not in order.
▶ 1:40 First Corinthians 14 comes after first Corinthians 13 [unclear] preacher you’re really intelligent. Yes the chapter of love and chapter 13 comes after chapter 12 the gifts of the spirit gifts of the spirit love and then chapter 14 we pick up in 1st Corinthians and Paul saying follow after charity loved and desire spiritual gifts. So we are supposed to have both love and spiritual gifts as. I grew up in the church. The churches either had love or they had spiritual gifts they emphasized love and they basically.
▶ 2:39 Abandoned and didn’t believe the gifts of the spirit would work today or they had they had love they had gifts of the spirit and they didn’t do it according to first Corinthians 13 love and then it creates problems but as you can see we need what both in. Our church services so he says desire spiritual gifts especially prophecy prophecy is the identification exhortation and comfort of the church we’re not talking about the office of a prophet predicting things to come we’re talking about speaking comfort. Edification building the church and encouraging the church how many of those three things sound really good for a church yes now.
Is it “unknown” tongue?
Short answer: He notes “unknown” is in italics, added by translators; it is another language.
▶ 3:32 He that speaks in another language now all your versions say unknown but it never says unknown in the Bible. They put that there and it’s there in italics but if you go through the chapter you will come to a verse 21 where he quotes out of Isaiah saying with other languages I will speak to my people and they still won’t listen. The other languages another language not an unknown because God knows all the languages it’s not unknown to God what. If a person speaks in another language he speaks not unto men but under who God does God understand the language you bet it’s not unknown it’s just another language that the people around you don’t know.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
— 1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:32What does one speaking in tongues do?
Short answer: He speaks not to men but to God; in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.
▶ 4:34 Now. For no man understands him howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries in the what spirit and what kind of gifts spiritual gifts the rivers of God comes out in spiritual gifts amen. And the speaking must come from the spirit the spirit mystery is something hidden. And. The spirit knows how to expose reveal. Those mysteries in the scriptures to his people not a preacher not a teacher not an evangelist the spirit knows how to do it through his people is that an amen and it takes the spirit doing it this is beyond intellect it takes the spirit so.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
— 1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 4:34How should the Spirit be in our services?
Short answer: We have to order our services so the Spirit is invited and allowed; Paul commended the Colossians for their order.
▶ 5:34 God’s not partial we can have spiritual gifts operating the nine gifts of the spirit and we can have love operating. For a spiritual service. The spirit must be allowed in the order. If you’re going to have a church service where the spirit is you got to put him on the agenda. Okay and remember these things can’t be done without the spirit otherwise we’re just going through the formalities see the spirits got to give the utterance as it says in x2 the spirits got to do these things so you see these guys are in order they’re not only in order in martin when they get on the battlefield they’re in order it’s important that everyone stays in the order of their assigned tasks so that all the soldiers are safe in that right you got to do your job so there has to be order and for us to have a spirit-filled service.
▶ 6:56 We got to order we got to arrange that this spirit is invited and allowed to be in our services okay. In Colossians Paul commends the Colossians for their order he says though I be absent in the flesh and I’m with you in the spirit here is the spirit thing again the spirit transcends being there in person the spirit transcends my own fleshly limitations and he says I. Rejoice and behold your order and the firmness of your faith he says you have great order in your church services.
Scripture in this part
Colossians 2:5 (NKJV)
For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
— Colossians 2:5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:56Should we forbid tongues?
Short answer: No. Covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
▶ 7:51 So we go back to 1st Corinthians 14 covet to prophesy. Forbid not to speak with tongues. Did you hear that judge. Forbid not to speak in tongue I guarantee if you could spiritually. Sweep through America in all the churches in just a split second you would find very few speaking in tongues and yet the Bible says don’t forbid speaking in tongue yet we make tongues a debate in the church world.
▶ 8:29 Are you there and we just read that the person speaking in tongues is speaking under who God not man. Say it God not men is there anything wrong with speaking to God in a language that he gives you and speak in the mysteries the mighty acts of God from the Bible there’s nothing wrong with that but when we don’t know how to do something we criticize things we justify ourselves saying well it’s not for today or you know it’s not for me or whatever it is the river of God the spirit of God is for all of us and then he says this important statement let all things be done decently and in order so we need to let all things be done don’t we all things of the spirit and we need to be mannerly and we need to have an order of things are you with me and so there is a church service order and a.
▶ 9:43 Spirit empowered church service order has the spirit in that service. We know first Corinthians 14 is talking about a church service. All right we know because in verse 5 the church may receive edifying the church is the called out ones they’ve come out to meet it now right okay in verse 19 the church in the church I’d rather speak five words with under standing than 10,000 in languages another language so he’s talking about what the church service in verse 23 if therefore the whole church come together in one place with unlearned and unbelievers. Unlearned and unbelievers should be normal in a church service.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 14:39 (NKJV)
Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.
— 1 Corinthians 14:39 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:51What should we bring when we come together?
Short answer: When you come together, each of you has a psalm, a teaching, a tongue, a revelation, an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
▶ 10:38 So this is talking about a church service what we’re supposed to do in a church meeting. Verse 26 when you come together not if you come together when you come together all of you have a Psalm a doctor and a tongue a Revelation and an interpretation when you come to the church service every one of you are supposed to come with a song. With a doctrine with a tongue with a Revelation with an interpretation of tongue in other words you bring something to church you don’t come to church to get something. Are you there now if you again could pass through the churches in America in a split second like God can do how many people in those church services came to the church with something to contribute or they just come to hear an inspired message or to socialize with people.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 14:26 (NKJV)
How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
— 1 Corinthians 14:26 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 10:38Is ministry only for the preacher?
Short answer: No. Every member of the body supplies and builds itself up in love, not just the evangelist and pastor.
▶ 11:51 Think about it and why is it that way because most ministers are not teaching that every member in the body supplies and builds itself up in love it’s not just the evangelist and the mighty speaker and and the song leader or the great singer it’s every member brings something to church with it. Are you there now that is that Bible yeah and we got to say to ourself what did I get up this morning or and seek God through the week to bring to church I saw I am a spiritual song or it I just got up here I’m gonna go do my duty. Amen.
▶ 12:47 Verse 26 don’t forget it. When you come you’re supposed to come with something. To contribute to that service now. We’re gonna take a look at a spirit empowered orderly church service. Strictly. Directly from the early church forget about wesley and martin luther and pope benedict the 4th and all that forget them people. This comes directly from Christ to the apostles and this is what a church service is supposed to have if it doesn’t have these things it’s not a church service are you ready a spirit empowered can we do anything on our own church no why do we try.
Scripture in this part
Ephesians 4:16 (NKJV)
from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
— Ephesians 4:16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:51What comes first in a Spirit-empowered service?
Short answer: God’s spoken word. Jesus said, the words I speak are spirit and they are life.
▶ 13:56 Without Jesus we can do nothing without the Holy Spirit we’re not gonna accomplish anything so let’s take a look here number one God’s word and it’s the spoken word not the silent word you got to speak God’s word remember Jesus didn’t accomplish anything nor did people hate him and try to kill him till he began to speak the word of God when he began to speak the word of God then people got changed and people. Rejected him and wanted to kill him and did kill him but as long as he was silent nothing happened you got it see if you’re a silent Christian nobody’s going to get mad at you nobody’s gonna be glad at you nobody’s gonna be changed you start speaking you’re gonna have people mad at you glad at you just like Jesus did.
▶ 14:53 In John 6:63 Jesus said my words are spirit and they are life so when we speak the word of God we’re speaking the spiritual things of God are you with me you can’t get any higher than the scriptures they are spirit they are higher than anything so memorizing scripture and quoting scripture you’re at the peak that is spirit all right now he gives us five ways to speak how many five. First Corinthians 14:6 brethren if I come to you speaking with languages what shall I profit you unless there’s an interpretation except I speak to you either by Revelation by knowledge by prophecy or doctrine so there’s five sources of speaking in the church and the.
▶ 15:52 Only one we usually hear is. Doctrine. That’s the only one that we usually hear. We usually don’t hear tongues or interpretation. And Paul said don’t forbid it okay Paul [unclear] a person speaks in a language he builds himself up and I can tell you back in the old days when God was moving in the pentecostal spirit filled circles somebody could speak in tongues and they might not have been in interpretation but when that was on an anointed tongues and it was really coming from the spirit you could feel the power of the presence in it and not only did they get built up you got built up because you were there are you there now other people spoke in tongues and nothing happened because they were just stammering and jamming but when somebody really spoke from the spirit that anointing came and it lifted you up it it it confirmed God is real.
▶ 16:59 Haven’t even heard anybody speak in tongues in the last year. See they have us conditioned just to go and learn doctrine. Be taught. Not to speak in languages and get them interpreted not knowledge and second Peter 232 I mean second Peter 3:18 Peter said you know these things and he said the earth is going to be burnt up by fire renovated by fire he said you know these things an idol is nothing you know these things that Jesus is the savior you know these things you have knowledge of these things you know them they’re real to you amen how many believe Jesus is coming that’s knowledge how many of you know when he’s coming that’s Revelation.
Scripture in this part
John 6:63 (NKJV)
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
— John 6:63 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 14:53What does revelation and prophecy do?
Short answer: The thoughts of many hearts are revealed; the Comforter convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment.
▶ 18:02 He hadn’t revealed it yet. See what I mean now Revelation is very important and Luke 2:35 the scripture said so the thoughts of many hearts shall be. The thoughts of many hearts shall be revealed why because I need to know I’m a sinner if I’m a sinner. See God needs to search my heart and expose me and how was that done by the Holy Spirit ministers can’t do this stuff. That’s why we need the Holy Ghost in the order. Amen and if you don’t give the Holy Ghost time to expose hearts and deal with hearts and you don’t avail yourself to be used of God to prophesy to pray or to sing a song or whatever that person is not gone hearts not going to be revealed.
▶ 19:14 Could that be an amen. The Holy Spirit’s see when the comforter comes the Bible says he will convict you who’s going to do the convicting the Holy Spirit of sin of what’s right and the judgment to come you see a speaker can’t put you under conviction the Holy Spirit has to put you under conviction. That’s why when I got saved I never answered an altar call for salvation again. See the Holy Spirit took care of that one time forever now I answered many altar calls to get my act together. Isn’t that right but not for salvation I don’t care what the preacher did but I had friends that’s supposed to be saved they’d get under commission who gets saved again they got saved about every other week or every month there’s getting saved getting the same I’m going what in the world.
Scripture in this part
Luke 2:35 (NKJV)
(yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
— Luke 2:35 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 18:02John 16:8 (NKJV)
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
— John 16:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 19:14How should we pray in a service?
Short answer: I will pray with the spirit and with the understanding; the Spirit helps us when we don’t know how to pray.
▶ 20:15 You see the Holy Ghost is got to put you under conviction. Amen. Prophecy is we already hit that one. The second thing and the service is prayer. That’s why we open in prayer that’s what we open with a scripture in a church a lot of people don’t even pick up the Bible through the week and if you open that service up by reading a scripture at least you got them reading one time a week and I showed this church how to do it a couple of years ago all right. Something that God touches you with through the week if it feeds you it will feed the people on Sunday morning.
▶ 21:12 Alleluia and it doesn’t have to be just the preacher doing it prayer I will pray with the what. Spirit thank you and I will pray with the what yes. Your brain and the Holy Spirit connect and you don’t come out with gyoon headed stuff you come out from the spirit with things the mind can interpret and respond to alleluia so this in the trance stuff. Come on God doesn’t have to put us in a trance to talk to us and we talk to people hey man are you there it sounds real spirit so it looks real spiritual.
▶ 22:09 But it doesn’t have to be that way at all all right I will pray with the spirit in fact the Bible says we don’t know how to pray as we ought doesn’t it say that but the spirit knows how to pray and he can pray with groanings that cannot be uttered he hits areas so complex in your life that you just groan oh God you ever done that yeah there’s no way to describe it yeah oh God. The spirit knows how to pray the third one is singing. Singing a music is very big priority in the scriptures the Bible says in John 4:24 worship the father in spirit and in truth worship him and what spirit and in truth worship with the spirit and with understanding of the truth.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 14:15 (NKJV)
What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
— 1 Corinthians 14:15 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 21:12Romans 8:26 (NKJV)
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
— Romans 8:26 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 22:09What does the Bible say about worship?
Short answer: Lift your hands, dance, sing a new song; speak in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Bring out the old as well as the new.
▶ 23:14 The Bible says lift your hands so you lift your hand the Bible says the dance so you can dance when their song too dances the Bible says to sing until the Lord a new song you can sing to the Lord a new song it’s all scriptural worship is just as important as the word and it’s prayer and worship is where the Holy Spirit really has more freedom to touch different life’s at the same time than any other part of the service and the worship is where the prophecies the spiritual prayers can come forth these these. Sources of speaking can come out during a worship time. And let me tell you you don’t need music to attain to that back in the old vine every once in a while I would stop all the music just to make sure we weren’t leaning on the music and that presence of God was real and it was real amen.
▶ 24:25 You want to make sure you’re not just getting into music but music is something God has ordained to be used in a church service in Ephesians 5:19 speaking to yourself in Psalms hymns and spiritual songs. Psalms. You can sing Psalms okay. I’m trying to think of a Psalm to sing. My mind is empty. Behold how good and how pleasant it ii. See that’s a song a hymn amazing. Great don’t mock hymns.
▶ 25:17 Don’t think that the fresh all the fresh songs coming out today nullifies all the hymns the Bible says you bring out the old as well as the new amen see that’s a hymn what’s a spiritual song that’s a song of the spirit never been saying before. Alright I’m gonna sing a song that everybody can sing a song about Jesus the ruling reigning king a song about his love a song about his power he is our rock and our strong tower. Say you ever heard that before. Now. Are you here this morning see we have been programmed to come to church you hear of great speaker a great music band which is really a bass electric.
Scripture in this part
Ephesians 5:19 (NKJV)
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
— Ephesians 5:19 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 24:25What instruments belong in church?
Short answer: The Bible ordained the orchestra; horns and orchestras have been thrown out and we’ve been acclimatized to piano and drum.
▶ 26:22 Piano and a and a drum that’s it that’s it horns have been thrown out the orchestra has been thrown out and see we’ve we’ve been acclimatized in the Bible the orchestra was ordained by God not just a bass in a keyboard the whole group why because there’s so many levels and atmospheres in God every instrument was designed by God to give an expression that backed up that presence of God. Hallelujah. I will sing with the what spirit. Did you come this morning to sing with the spirit.
▶ 27:14 Did you make it a point I’m gonna go to church with something and I’m gonna come to church with the spirit and be involved in prayer with the spirit and worship with the spirit amen. I’m not going to lean on my pastor anymore the mighty man of God or the mighty woman I got I’m gonna lean on the people in the congregation I’m gonna unite with them and we’re gonna have a great service. Hello there. Now we have had a spiritual song in this church in the past year or several time okay. We’re we’re up to great on that one and we have sang hymns old ones a new one all right. The results of a spirit led orderly service how many notes the results that count.
▶ 28:15 See I need my life changed I need my life renewed I need my life strengthened every day and every week and God has chosen the gathering together is people to do the great thing you can meet with God at home but the big meetings come in the congregation. 3,000 were baptized and thousands were added to the church daily have you know that’s great results and that was because the spirit of God moved and these people spoke in languages of the 15 nations that were there they didn’t need an interpreter they were speaking in language that the people knew but they didn’t know the speaker didn’t know the language see the Bible says tongues are a sign for who the unbeliever.
What happens when an unbeliever comes in?
Short answer: He is convinced by all; the secrets of his heart are revealed, he falls down and worships God and reports that God is truly among you.
▶ 29:08 Now can you imagine being in Jerusalem that day and you’re from Egypt and this Galilean from up by the lake is speaking in egyptian the mighty works of God and you know he doesn’t know Egypt you have me know that’s gonna get your attention yes. In the azusa revival those foreigners getting off the boat. The church service is just a few blocks away and those russians and those asians and these nations were coming in and they were seeing the crowd and they would go over there to to see what’s going on and there’s people speaking in their language how do you know that get your attention yeah. And you can mock azuz all you want to but folks these things really happen.
▶ 30:06 Are you with me. 1 Corinthians 14:25 here is the real thing as the musicians come. Try to get this in your cranial structure alright in your spiritual brain. Verse 25 if an unlearned or an unbeliever comes into your midst and all of you speak in a language and not his language he doesn’t know what’s going on but if all of you speak with one of these five ways of speaking he is going to. Fall on his face. Worship God and report that God is in you of his truth of a truth because the secrets of his heart is made plain Revelation came see you didn’t know the condition of that person but the Holy Spirit did and you prayed are you saying are you you prophesied what that person needed to hear to know that he needed God to change his life you get that church.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 14:24-25 (NKJV)
But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.
— 1 Corinthians 14:24-25 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 30:06How should we examine ourselves?
Short answer: Like David: search me, O God, and see if there is any wicked way in me.
▶ 31:27 Do we understand that. Now see that’s why David said search me o God. See if there be any wicked way in me see we search ourselves we’re easy on ourselves or were too hard on herself you know we want to nitpick of things it doesn’t matter but the spirit knows how to deal with you in an order of priority the most important things first. So there is a river that makes glad the city of God the Holy Spirit flowing out of his people coming together with the word of God with prayer and was singing and God will keep revealing our hearts if we. Allow him to come and talk to us.
Scripture in this part
Psalm 139:23-24 (NKJV)
