Jesus read Isaiah’s prophecy in Nazareth, but His hometown saw only Joseph’s son and tried to throw Him off a cliff. The widow of Zarephath gave to Elijah, and the Samaritan woman received living water. Make Christ a priority and take responsibility to meet Him.

What is the living word?

▶ Watch this part (0:12)

Short answer: In the last message of the series: His word jumps out and grabs you—Jesus wants to teach you.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 0:12 We’ve been talking about the power of God’s people I think this will be the last message about the power of God’s people and before we begin you must know that to get the most out of this message you will need to study this and review it at home uh if you do not know the Bible if you don’t know the Old Testament if you don’t know the people I’m talking about in this story you won’t understand what it’s talking about you may get part of it but to get the whole thing and to let God’s word become life to you you got to take it home and you got to study it so when you receive one of those sheets there there for you to take home and you can look up each of those verses and you can ask God to open up his word to you and uh he will in a measure that you’re at in the measure that he wants to give you but I encourage you to get more out of this message uh take it home and and put it get it into you.

▶ 1:06 Amen we want to experience his living word and his living word is when his word will jump out and grab you and speak to you my dad used to tell me of stories where he would be uh that would happen to him when he was reading the Bible or just on his way home driving and God would be speaking to his right and that’s happened to all of you all you older. Ones and the living God living word is still here just because you’re not living in the 80s or the 70s and the time of the Jesus people doesn’t mean the word of God is not here living word is still the living word it’s still available for everyone willing to go and draw it from the well Jesus Christ we’re looking at Jesus this morning in Luke chapter 4:14 Jesus returned in the spirit the power of the spirit to Galilee and news of him went out through all the surrounding region and he taught in their synagogues being glorified by all if you think Jesus is boring or if you think church is boring you got to remember this is this what Jesus did he went around and he taught and people after hearing his teaching they glorified him so when you hear God’s word have a hearing ear you’re are responsible to respond with a good.

▶ 2:27 Heart God wants to teach you through his word Jesus wants to teach you through his word and so if you have feelings of this is boring this is I don’t like this we got to adjust our feelings we don’t change Jesus we got to change all right. Amen so he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up and as his custom was he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read so it’s important here to notice he was in where. Uh before what location was he at in verse 14 he was where Galilee right he had come from Galilee and where is he headed to Nazareth was and Jesus grew up where in Nazareth so this is his hom.

How did Nazareth respond?

▶ Watch this part (3:19)

Short answer: Jesus read “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me,” but His hometown said, isn’t this Joseph’s son?

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 3:19 Toown they know him by name they know his brothers they know his sisters they know his mommy and his daddy they would see him walking through the street as a young boy walking through the village this is his hometown and Jesus as his custom was it says here as his custom was that means it was his routine right it says he was where on the Sabbath day synagogue thank. You and he stood up to read as his custom was he was in the house of God on the Sabbath day the Sabbath day happens every week so here we see a Revelation Jesus is in the house of God every week should we be following and and doing what he says doing like he does yes you can’t look up the Bible and be like well Jesus never went to church why do I got to go to church no he was there amen there it is can’t throw it out what do we do with that Christians what do we do with that people of God when you accept Christ in your heart you’ve got to we’ve got to respond now to the next thing that he wants and he stands up to read and he come he reads the scripture out of the prophets.

▶ 4:36 And it’s this powerful scripture the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty of the captives and recovery of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and so he says this he speaks it and he’s quoting out of uh Isaiah or Jeremiah I don’t. Remember and he’s quoting out of the old. Testament now what you also want to understand is Jesus is springboarding off of this moment and he’s starting his ministry he’s about to go and start healing he’s about to go and start preaching he’s about to go and start doing powerful works for the next three years until he dies.

▶ 5:33 And how many of us or I would like to be there in that moment this is a this is a great moment in. History and these people had won the lottery they were there they were there on that wonderful powerful excellent day when the king of kings the Lord of lords the son of God begins to do a great work in that area. He started his ministry they were in the right country they at the right moment the right moment the right year the right place they knew little. Jesus when he’s walking through and all of a sudden there’s a transition in Jesus he says okay I’ve been the guy that you didn’t know really who I was but now I’m going to take on my responsibility.

▶ 6:24 Because Isaiah is talking about Jesus he’s talking about this moment moment and Jesus says okay things are going to. Change and so they were there they had an opportunity to see his hand do work they have an opportunity to be there at that wonderful day you know oh my gosh if I could just see Jesus then I would believe oh my gosh if I could just see him do a miracle if I could just see him preach or speak if I could feel that powerful word from him and then I would believe then I would follow him well they were. There they were there and how did they. Respond Jesus said today this scripture is fulfilled in your he hearing what scripture the one Isaiah the spirit of the Lord is upon me to preach right Jesus quoted the scripture he said today is fulfilled fulfilled what do you mean fulfilled you’re saying that you have the spirit of the Lord on you little little Jesus.

▶ 7:30 And what do they say is this not Joseph’s son Joseph you know Joseph owes me. Money mary she never babysit my kids when I asked her to Joseph you know he put up that house it fell down. Already isn’t this Joseph’s. Son I guess they weren’t there when he was born they didn’t know he was born of a virgin so the response in today’s terms is me me Jesus is. Mid young people may understand what I’m. Saying so here we have the Lord God almighty the creator of the universe the healer miracle worker king of kings Lord of lords the resurrected savior wow powerful and he’s in their midst and they say and he’s going to he says he’s going to start all these things and this is what their response is and we’re living in a time in America and in our lives throughout the world where Jesus is in our midst and we do not think that he is of more value than anything else in.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Luke 4:16-22 (NKJV)

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

— Luke 4:16-22 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 4:36

Do we respond the same way?

▶ Watch this part (8:50)

Short answer: Possibly—in America we have freedom of religion, but Christ may not be a priority; faith makes us well.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 8:50 Life we do not understand how important he. Is it’s possible that that we respond this way to Jesus Luke 4:24 he said assuredly I say to you no prophet is accepted in his own country he’s talking to uh his f his people that knew him growing up no prophets accept in his own country goes on to say none of the widows of Israel was Elijah sent to except to uh zarap in the region of sidon to a woman who was a widow all right uh elah was a prophet in the Old Testament years before right and he’s saying that Elijah wasn’t sent to any of the widows in Israel the whole country of Israel Elijah was not sent to any widows in Israel he went to a widow in sidon and sidon is a different country which is present day.

▶ 9:53 Lebanon and so we see here that you know Jesus said he was only sent to the Jews he was only sent to the Israelites have only been sent to the lost sheep of Israel but here Elijah has been sent to somebody of another country because the people in that time would not accept or they rejected Elijah’s. Word and Jesus is saying here because he knows their thoughts he knows their attitudes he knows our thoughts he knows attitudes he knows our attitudes he know knows our feelings towards. Him that they have rejected him and Jesus knows when you’ve rejected him if you don’t make Jesus a priority if you treat him this way you’re. Saying we’ve rejected.

▶ 10:47 Him and in America we may have the freedom of religion but Christ is may not be a priority or important to us is he. Jesus is here in. America he’s here in our churches he’s here in our assemblies but it’s possible that we are not approaching and responding to Jesus properly. L and I just experienced it not today another day I was in a a room or he the God was there presence of God was there was at an assembly and I could feel the presence of God I could feel the power of God and I I looked six feet this way and there’s people sitting.

▶ 11:47 Down I mean I was shocked there it was heaven Jesus power oh my gosh this is where I want to be you know I got to be in the crowd this time I got to worship. God and he was there it’s powerful and then you look around and man it’s like man you guys how could you miss out on. This so it’s important to know how to respond when Jesus shows up Jesus showed up in their life and their time and he spoke a word and they didn’t respond right how are we. Responding Luke chapter 8442 as he went the multitudes thronged him now a woman having a flow of blood for 12 years came from behind and touched the border of his garment immediately her flow of blood stopped Jesus said who touched me she came trembling told the reason and what happened and he said your faith has made you well go in peace now many of you know this story I’m bringing this up because this woman amidst a crowd of people went in and touched.

▶ 13:04 Jesus and Jesus said your faith has made you well and so this is what I’m trying to say right here Jesus had a crowd of people around him yet none of them were getting anything from God why because none of them were reaching out to touch Jesus Christ none of them were reaching out their ear their time their uh pursuing to. Christ and in our own lives where we can’t just say oh where’s the show where is Jesus I love I believe in God and I want to be in you know I want to where’s this show at where’s the entertainment we can’t approach God like he’s entertainment and that’s what this crowd was doing I mean can you imagine they didn’t have no tv they didn’t have no video games they didn’t have no phones.

▶ 13:59 This is like back in the dark ages. Man you know they hear about a guy doing miracles they’re like man where’s the show how much what are the how much are the tickets it’s free we’re. Going is it possible that that’s how they were approaching Christ. Luke chapter 42 uh chapter 4:22 so all bore witness to him and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth he said today this scripture is fulfilled in his hearing so what were they rejecting what were they not. Accepting what was fulfilled what was fulfilled what he says it right here it’s it’s big s what is it.

What story did Jesus refer to?

▶ Watch this part (14:57)

Short answer: The widow of Zarephath—outside Israel—to whom Elijah was sent; listen to Him.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 14:57 Fulfilled say it the scripture right so what were they having trouble with the scripture they were having trouble with him saying that he was the fulfillment of that they rejected his word and the question is today what word are we rejecting from Christ do we reject that he that his gospel should be preached Jesus came the first thing he said was repent. Are we rejecting that he in his word is not the answer for the brokenhearted or us our broken heart are we rejecting that he is he he in his word is not the source of real freedom for captivity and sin are we rejecting that he in his word can restore the spiritual sight because he can restore the sight of the blind the scriptures say that the blind lead the blind and they follow it they fall both fall into the ditch you don’t want to follow a blind person and you don’t want to be blind yourself Christ can open your eyes open your understanding when you read the Bible are you blind because there a lot of atheists and a lot of people that don’t believe that are blind they can read the Bible and see nothing and God’s got to open up your eyes.

▶ 16:21 And so we’re going to look at what Jesus is referring to Jesus is talking about a story in the Old Testament with Elijah he’s referring to how Elijah was sent to a widow of sidon a widow of current day Lebanon was not sent to any widow of Israel so we’re going to look at that real quick the word of the Lord came to Elijah who came to where Elijah and the word said arise and go to the widow right in the scriptures in the New Testament m Matthew 17:5 a voice came out of a voice out of the cloud said this is my beloved son whom I’m well pleased with whom I’m well pleased listen to him Hebrews chapter 1 in these last days God has spoken to us by his son now I’m bringing this up because it’s one of the first points in this scripture up here in first Kings 17 I’m sorry I didn’t put down the scripture first king 177 if you want to note it down right real quick the word of the Lord came to Elijah and who has it come to in our time who has it come to.

▶ 17:34 Who Jesus confirmed here in 17:5 listen to who him who is him Jesus Christ in these last days God has spoken to us by who his son Jesus so who are we listening to. Jesus and his disciples right. So I got pictures of here we got muhammad muhammad they wrote another book did the word of the Lord come to muhammad no it came to who. Jesus. Right are the are the disciples the apostles are they writing something else no they’re writing what what Jesus said they’re talking about Jesus they’re revealing the scriptures about Jesus.

▶ 18:30 They can’t get over who. Jesus who’s that guy on top right Joseph Smith he wrote another book what is it called book of mormon that’s another book did the word of the Lord come to Joseph’s men he who did it come to. Jesus and God speaks to us by who Jesus not Joseph Smith not muhammad and anybody else that wants to write their book not their book okay the hindus have m you know a million gods and they can write their own book you know God has spoken to us by who Jesus that’s very important to understand first Kings 17:10 Elijah said to the woman the widow pre please bring bring me a little water and a cup that I may drink and bring me a morsel of bread in your hand get go get it you got to understand here this widow first of all she’s a widow that means something bad is happen in her life second of all they’re dealing with a famine in their land there’s no water there’s no water to water the land and there’s no crops got a big problem there’s a problem a big situation going on and Elijah comes up and says what bring

What does God request of us?

▶ Watch this part (20:00)

Short answer: Like Elijah asking for water and bread, and Jesus asking the Samaritan woman—are we willing to give?

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 20:00 me some water. What bring me a morsel of bread what has God requested from. Us are we willing to give him a sacrifice Romans 12:1 present your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God which is your spiritual worship Hebrews 13:15 through him let us uh through him then let us continue offer up a sacrifice of praise to God the fruit of our lips giving thanks unto his name as I quoted earlier this morning and so with your life you can offer up your life living holy and acceptable to him that is our sacrifice to God Elijah is asking for water he’s asking for bread God is asking for you to do something he’s asking for you to to sacrifice praise to sacrifice and give your life to him how do we respond secondly same scripture if you look at John 4:7 Jesus says the same thing to the woman of Samaria.

▶ 21:19 A woman of Samaria came to draw water and Jesus said to her what did she what did he say give me. Water give me water. Is Jesus just bossing women around is that what he’s doing here the son of God he’s just going to boss where’s the woman at get over here. Woman no the woman is an example of the church that’s. Us and he’s calling all of us to give to him and America has a problem with this why because we get a lot of things for. Free as a kid you get a lot of things free from your parents depending on where you grow up in America you know when you got a lot of money and all this your parents are just spoiling you right ian that’s just the way and that’s part of raising kids you know when they’re eight years old what are they going to do when where’s Aaron at when they’re two years old what are they going to.

▶ 22:37 Do you know when they’re in they got to go to school and cooperate but what are they going to do they’re getting stuff for free and they have to make a transition from thinking everything’s for free to becoming independent working for what they get and taking care of themselves right and it’s the same way in God’s house and with God’s people you can’t just just take keep taking freebies from God somewhere you have to make a transition. Amen when God God is asking for us to give him something he’s asking when you walk in the door this morning to give him praise to enter his gates with thanksgiving and praise and you have a choice whether you’re going to bring it to him or not and if you don’t it shows what level you are in.

What does Jesus give?

▶ Watch this part (23:37)

Short answer: Living water—whoever drinks will never thirst; the widow knew Elijah was a man of God.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 23:37 God in America there’s a safety net not just a safety net but more you’re enabl to they give food stamps to. Everybody. Uh. And in other nations if you don’t work there’s nobody there to help help you you know if you go down to another nation south America all those places if you don’t if you don’t rise to the task you’re in trouble nobody’s going to cook your meal the mcdonald’s is in the other town and you can’t get there it’s far away there’s no costco maybe down maybe in the big city but not where you’re at you’re going to have a tough. Time and so this Elijah. The woman says hey this is my last meal I don’t have any more food this my son and I this is our last meal to eat there’s nothing else here we’re just going to eat this and that’s it we’re dead and so the Elijah says the bin of flour shall not be used up the jar of oil shall not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth and so Elijah.

▶ 24:57 Brought uh met her need at this. Time John 4:13 Jesus said whoever drinks of this water will thirst again but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life and it’s the same situation you see Elijah uh this this week I was talking with my kids and we were talking about a story in the Bible and I said okay this story can you find anything where it’s t where can you find Jesus in the story it was a story in the Old Testament and there’s a lot all these Old Testament stories have a reference and a uh Revelation about Jesus Christ Jesus reveals these things so just like the flower is not going to be used up and the jar of oil is not going to dry Jesus is saying when you take his water it’s going to be a well of everlasting life and you’re never going to run out.

▶ 26:08 Amen and that’s Jesus is calling you to. Himself 1 Kings 17:24 now by this I know you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord is in your mouth that it’s truth. And Jesus okay this was the widow talking to Elijah Jesus also the woman at the well she said sir I perceive that you are a prophet they both responded the same way. Right and so I encourage you if you want to get some life and some water out of God’s word you guys have a paper there take it home read it take some time to get it in you study it and ask God to open up those scriptures to you and they will be uh it will be a living word to you a living word is like the the life of the water right you want that everlasting life being like a well that comes up all the time but if you don’t want water don’t do it Luke chapter 4:28 responding to Jesus after going back to now I know we’ve g we’ve talked about Elijah we talked about Jesus over with the woman of the well now we’re back to the original.

How did Nazareth react?

▶ Watch this part (27:31)

Short answer: They wanted to throw Him off the cliff—take responsibility to meet with Jesus yourself.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 27:31 Story coming. Back Jesus has just come and he said the spirit of the Lord is upon me today the scriptures are filled in your hearing and their response was what they said isn’t this Joseph’s son and then after him saying hey you know you guys missed out in the days of Elijah and the widows of Israel and after that they got really mad. It says that all those in the synagogue all those in the synagogue when they heard these things were filled with wrath they rose up and they thrust him out of the city they led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built that they might throw him down over the cliff and then passing through the midst of them he went his way.

▶ 28:33 And so they were so upset that they wanted to throw him off the cliff they were upset at Jesus Christ they wanted to throw him off the cliff and the power of the people here now was no good the people were using their power oh we’re the tough people we’re going to take Jesus to the bow of hill we’re going to throw him off oh man we’re united you’re united for stupidity is what you’re united for. And so maybe the people had people had power but they had power for the wrong. Thing and Jesus at this group at this crowd they thought he was nothing he pass right through them and went his way you’re not going to mess with Jesus you’re not going to mess with God we don’t want to oppose him either.

▶ 29:29 So let’s respond this. Morning one of the important things I want to mention or remind us this morning is that Jesus can be in our midst Jesus can be in our assemblies Jesus can be in our services the power of God the the heavenly father can be there the almighty the creator of the universe and we can be just letting him pass by and I tell you it’s a horrible horrible thing that we let happen that Jesus shows up he has the life in him he has the the spirit in him and we just let him go. By there’s nothing that any minister can do whether you go to the big church you go to the small church you go to the synagogue you go to the the other God whatever you go.

▶ 30:25 To if you don’t take it on yourself and responsibility to meet with your God to meet with Jesus it doesn’t matter where you’re. At I encourage you this. Morning we’ got to hear the word of God this morning got to respond to him. Amen Lord I want more of you. Living water rain down on. Me Lord I need more of you living breath of life come and fill me up let’s stand it.
