The Power of God’s People Pt 5 — January 19, 2025: full transcript and answers

▶ 0:12 Last week we were going over the power of God’s people we’re looking at the story of Jonathan and his armor bearer as they went up against the philistine camp they uh Jonathan had a desire to go against a garrison of the philistines and after he did it had the bravery and the courage there was a trembling and a shaking in the whole situation in the philistines who were greater and more powerful than the Israelites and God brought about victory was able to overcome the philistines because of Joshua’s sorry Jonathan’s and his armor bear’s courage we went went over a few things and um Jonathan and his arm said let us go up to these uncircumcised and we learned that that meant uh in the New Testament talking about our heart and our ears we have to get removed the hardness that we may have toward God’s word or toward uh him and we don’t want to have that and Stephen who was martyred if you remember the story in the New Testament he was standing before the Sanhedrin and this is one of the things he said he said you always resist the Holy Spirit so they were uncircumcised they were did not allow God’s spirit to speak to them to speak to their hearts they would not hear and we don’t want to be that way we don’t

▶ 1:43 want to resist God’s spirit and have a hard heart and shut our ears and hearts no matter where the message comes from is the message. Truth where are you getting where are you hearing it from am may come from uh somebody you don’t. Like but this this trembling and the earthquake came and it also brought back those uh Israelites who were hiding people that were hiding would not join the battle they came out and started to fight for the cause also those that had defected meaning they went and fought for the philistines and joined the philistines they came came and started fighting for the Israelites again so you see they turned uh God brought a great situation where people that were that had changed sides came back people that were hiding came back because these two men had.

▶ 2:49 Courage and when the armor bearer and the Jonathan had a conversation Jonathan said hey I want to go up to these guys the armor bearer said do all that is within your heart I am what with you and the question that God has today for us is are we with him are we with him or are we with the world are we with him are we with our friends are we with him are with our family who are we with who are we following and the statement that Jonathan said was a powerful statement he said for nothing restrains the Lord to save by many or by few powerful. And it’s God who’s doing the work amen the trembling in the camp came because of who because of God not because of Jonathan and his armor bear they didn’t have the great power God backed them up it was the power of God that.

▶ 3:46 Came and also they said let us go show ourselves God wants to show and reveal himself to us do we uh want him to show himself to us and ask after this pa uh Saul Jonathan’s father came up with a bad law about not eating during a war when they needed to eat and Jonathan had some. Honey and uh he broke this law and so we must know truth and stop bad laws bad laws were made back in those times and they’re made. Today so so the people rose up and that’s what this message is about the power of God of the people the people rose up and said to Saul who was the king Saul was the king we may have a president today we may have a governor today we may have state you know all kinds of congress officials you know it’s it’s a massive uh enterprise we have to deal with a lot of people that don’t.

▶ 4:57 Listen but the people said to Saul Jonathan die who has accomplished this great deliverance in Israel certainly not as the Lord lives not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground for he has worked with God this day and so Jonathan told no I’m sorry the people said to Saul no you’re not amen the people rescued Jonathan and he did not die Saul was going to kill his own son because of his own stupid. Law and his own law caused people to break God’s law they went and they were eating animals with the blood and they weren’t supposed to do that so it’s very important that we’re not following man’s laws just to follow them you know if if man comes out and says uh this stuff is legal that’s legal marijuana is legal drugs and alcohol are legal you can do whatever you want it doesn’t mean you should do it because God’s word is above man’s law laws.

▶ 6:11 Amen the power of God’s people in Mark 11:18 the teachers and priests of the law began plotting to kill Jesus but they were afraid of who say it they were afraid of the people who were amazed at his what his teachings now we think that maybe it was that they were amazed at his miracles and people were at awe of his miracles and that’s why they followed him but they also followed him and more were amazed at his what teaching his teachings so it’s important that we not just get excited about the miracles of God but also his what his word his truth what he has to say his teaching Matthew 263 the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered to plot Jesus and they feared doing it during the Passover for fear of causing a what an uproar among the people there we have upros today in America what are they for their upro against what’s.

▶ 7:19 Right people are causing an uproar in America today for sinful practices for gay marriage for gender transition for killing babies they call it reproductive. Rights for taking what is others and giving it to someone. Else that’s called a socialism I want to remind you the preamble of the constitution says we the people of the united states in order to form a more perfect union establish what justice ensure domestic what tranquility provide for the common defense promote promote say it with me promote the general w welfare not provide we’re not out to provide everybody everything that’s not what is we’re supposed to do and secure the blessings of liberty freedom to ourselves and our posterity to ordain and establish this constitution for the united states of America I bring this up because the formation of our country country is an example of people the power of people taking responsibility for.

▶ 8:37 Justice for the protection of their citizens for the freedom and liberty and for laws that are the same for everyone see that that was the goal of the constitution they didn’t want to have laws for thee and not for me right we don’t like that in America we don’t like seeing that the law doesn’t apply to certain people but it applies to me this guy gets to get off uh he can go speed on the highway but I can’t because I’m not an official this guy can go and steal money but I can’t. Right we don’t like that. When it’s talking about the domestic tranquility being able to walk on the street and not have people coming after you right in certain cities in our country in california it’s very dangerous it’s dangerous to be out walking.

▶ 9:51 Uh you know. And we have people that are winning. Uh offices and becoming officials attorneys district attorneys that will not uphold the laws and ensure domestic what tranquility which is another word of peace right when I walk down the street I don’t want somebody coming up and telling me give me your money and and and you know holding up a knife to me or whatever no when I go to the store I don’t want to have to open a get them to open a locked door because everybody’s. Stealing right when I drive somewhere and park my car I don’t want somebody just taking my catalytic converter or stealing my car because they get away with it no it’s.

▶ 10:53 Wrong and so crime rates are going up in areas because there is no punishment and this message is being uh spoken right now by many people the military when they join the military they have a uh a swearing in and they say I solemnly swear that I will support and defend the what the constitution of the united states against all enemies foreign and domestic that I will bear truth true faith and allegiance allegiance to the same that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation is this true mr thompson did you take an oath when you went into the marines yes is it similar to this very sim very similar. Excellent so the military is an example of people committing themselves to serve and defend and also as Christians we have to have a commitment to who to Christ and what his his laws his constitution what is God’s constitution are we committed to him and his constitution.

▶ 12:12 It’s good for us to be committed to our country yes but not above who not above our God amen and that’s why Christians have fought in battles and in wars because we want to defend our country but not you know when they come but our first commitment is to God and do his word and so God is asking us are we committed to uphold and follow the holy Bible and the spirit of God like this says this is the swearing in to defend the constitution of the united states are we committed to uphold the holy Bible and the spirit uh with the spirit of God.

▶ 13:06 Going back to the power of God’s people in Mark 8:34 I want young people to understand this is very important it says he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself deny themselves take up their cross and follow me I want you to all to understand at this point the crowd had men and women in it right the crowd had men and women and the words he says here are. Whoever amen not whatever man if you’re a man he didn’t say that he said whoever and in the crowd there’s men and women. Amen whoever wants to be my disciple so he’s talking to who men and women God is calling all of us to be his what.

▶ 14:10 Disciples men and women and who was there it said he called the crowd to him along with who. His disciples so there were already a group of people that were following Christ okay the apostles were already following Christ Peter James John. Bartholomew uh all the guys I got to get that one memorized Matthew mark no they. Weren’t they were all. There right the apostles were there and they were already his disciples but he’s standing there with his disciples and he’s calling the crowd to do the same thing that they’re doing so the disciples were just they were they had joined and followed Christ before the crowd okay and God was using them because they were already in training but God will use the people in the crowd just like he’ll use the disciples nothing special about these guys except that they what responded to Christ.

▶ 15:29 And we’re willing to follow him that’s it there’s nothing special about the leaders there’s nothing special about the the great pastor down the road we are all. Disciples and so the people were called with the leaders and again we want to remind you that the leaders uh. You know we’re not going anywhere we don’t have anything without Jesus Christ the people you don’t have anything without Jesus. Christ and so God is calling all people to become his disciples and we see here he’s saying what we have to do three things three main things are we ready what are they first.

▶ 16:25 What he’s calling all people to become his disciples and the first first thing he’s calling you to do is what deny yourself do deny your fleshly lust deny Satan deny the desire to sin you’ve got to deny yourself deny your your your desire to be with the world and like the world take up your cross you have a burden that you have to bear you’re growing up you’re going to have to be independent or you’re older you have to you have to bear the burden that you have in life. Right amen we have to work we have to keep functioning we have to raise a family we have to take care of our responsibilities and it the last thing says what follow me God’s not saying to abandon your responsibilities and sher all the things that you have to do no he says deny yourself take up your cross your responsibilities and what follow me and so are we following him whoever wants to save their life will lose it whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it what good is it for someone to gain the whole world and yet forfeit their own.

▶ 17:52 Soul uh a few weeks ago we talked about how young people or wherever you’re at in your life you need to make plans and set some goals in your life to address the the natural area to and uh to get a job skill. To get a good career going to get a good job going to own a business whatever it may be to get a return and and make money but if you gain all of that and yet you are not serving Christ it’s saying here we what we forfeit our what. Our soul first John 2:16 for everything in the world the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes and the pride of life comes not from the father but from the world and so if you get all of these things let’s say you accomplish your goal you’re successful you’re doing great but if you are have given yourself over to the world and you’ve gained the world but you don’t you haven’t gained Christ you have forfeited your soul there is no heaven in that.

▶ 19:09 Formula you’ve gained the world and the reward for those in the world is destruction you got to make sure you balance it out and serve your God amen amen 2 Chronicles 27 verse1 joam was 25 as king he’s a young man and he reigned 16 years. Years he did what was what he did what was what right in whose sight the lord’s sight the sight of the Lord but the people acted say this with me. Corruptly and so we want to point out here that joam was young he was 25 and as a 25-year-old he had his heart right toward God he wanted to do what was right in whose eyes in God’s eyes not in the eyes of men jotham cared more about doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord than in the eyes of his friends his family and also the people that he was ruling over and that’s important I wish government officials would would have that kind of heart that even though the people may be corrupt we don’t just do whatever the people want.

▶ 20:30 Amen you know a lot of people are are asking for bad things doesn’t mean we should do them oh we’re going to pass this law because this is what the people want and that’s the problem with quote unquote. Democracy you know when all the people agree for wrong doesn’t mean you should do. It but this is America well I live in America too. And I don’t want stupid. Laws just because you do and a bunch of your friends. Do and so this begs the question who are we pleasing in our life are we doing what is right in somebody else’s eyes are we doing what is right in God’s eyes.

▶ 21:30 And also just because people want to do wrong doesn’t mean that we go along with it Exodus chapter 32:7 the Lord said to Moses go down because your people whom you brought up out of Egypt have become corrupt they have been quick they have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf they bowed down to it sacrificed to it and have said these are your gods Israel who brought you out of Egypt and so Moses was he a good lead. Yes or no yes Moses was a good leader did he follow God’s word yes he went up to the mountain he got God’s word he shared it his face shone he listened to God you know the only problem we have with him is that he hit the rock. Right and God didn’t like that he got he got you know a harsh uh discipline for that but that was his problem he hit the rock.

▶ 22:26 Amen but he was a good leader a good man he wanted good uh wanted to follow what was right apart from what the people wanted so he comes back and all the people are behaving like this they’re serving an idol did he just go along with it. No is that what we should do just go along with it because that’s what the people want. No and uh these people found them in aelves in a difficult spot because he had just saved them and he you know this is the nation of Israel and they are rejecting him. Already and so they were they had some punishment to pay the people wanted to be corrupt but they had a a punishment they had to. Pay they had to be 40 years in the wilderness and after the idol here there was a civil war was no good I wouldn’t have wanted to be part of that.

▶ 23:31 Amen so it’s important as a person as a people that we do what’s right in God’s eyes whether the leader is doing what’s right or not it’s important as leaders that we do what is right in God’s eyes no matter what the people are doing or not. Amen. Amen mark chapter 15 verse 5 Pilate wanted to please the crowd say this with me he wanted to what please the crowd Pilate is not a Jew right he is a what. Roman and he wants to please the crowd so he set who free. Jesus no barabus and he ordered his soldiers to beat Jesus with a whip and nail him to a cross.

▶ 24:28 And so leaders want to please the people without regard to truth and this is the problem with the philosophy of no right or wrong or that you define your own ethics you know when you hear people in colleges campuses talk as charlie kirk’s out there they give you all kinds of mumbo jumbo and they say oh he believes that so it’s okay for him to believe that I respect that but I have a different opinion and I want you to respect my opinion and we you know all this there’s no truth this is the problem we want to please. Everyone and so when it comes to running a country a business or a home or something else you have to operate with certain principles you can’t be spending money more money than you take in in a business.

▶ 25:20 Basics right you’re going to go out of business you’re going to not have any money to invest in your business you’re not going to have any money to pay yourself and and pay your bills right you can’t operate under the reverse principles for running a business for running a country we are trying to operate that way where we just spend money right more than we take in we know the debt is several trillion th trillion dollars. Trillion in our country you keep giving out things for free and thinking it’s not going to harm the country in the home we can’t just give give kids what they want because they want it I want candy for a breakfast lunch and dinner is that going to work. No I don’t want to brush my teeth I don’t want to learn anything I want to play all day is that going to help your child no it’s just see we we operate with principles every day with our family with business but then we go to God and the government and we think oh we throw out all principles no we can’t do.

▶ 26:41 That so those who are supporting the murdering of children as a contraception is it right no it is government wanting to get elected. Those who are calling. To for gender transitioning and the like is it right no it’s government wanting to get elected they want to please the people what do the people want. Right I want to share some people here real quick regarding issues we have in california this guy in the bottom this is michael shellenberger he’s inter intervie with mr carlson and he is explaining that the majority of homelessness is due to drug addiction it’s not because it’s the majority right people go through hard times but the big problem we have is drug addiction people are on drugs and they are stealing they are living on the streets and nobody is coming up to them and saying hey you can’t live on the street you need to go into re you know there’s no re there’s nothing happening they keep living there we keep enabling them and we’re giving them money to stay on the street so they stay addicted to.

▶ 28:08 Drugs the guy on the top right this is Patrick Bet-David he is the interviewer he’s interviewing this guy I didn’t get his name but he was on skid row skid row is a place in la it’s a street where it’s just tents and uh everybody’s living on the street you you you wouldn’t want to be there uh unless you have a purpose right I wouldn’t want to say hey kids let’s go down this skid row and let’s you know I want you to meet some. People so he’s interviewing this guy and he’s talking about his experience of living on skid row and uh it’s very eye opening he said that he was trying to get arrested so that he could get clean because out on the streets or what he was doing doing he wasn’t getting clean he wanted to get clean and so his solution was I need to get arrested and something happened where he he got arrested uh not purposefully and he got into a program and it helped him and he was able to get out but the current see we’re the current enabling of all these things is not good it’s not good it’s not just it’s not promoting the the domestic tranquility because when you have people just living on the street they’re going to hurt people that go outside children that walk to school families that are taking their kids to school they have to walk over poop they

▶ 29:38 have to walk over needles that are for drugs they got to be afraid of the people that may uh you know if you go to pennsylvania there’s a city kensington you got you’re scared for your life it’s not right it’s not good policy it’s not good. Top left this guy’s name is ryan my kids and I have been watching his video of him traveling from la to the east coast and he says I started with one penny and he was doing it for another reason he was trying to raise money for feeding America but he didn’t know what he did he just showed the whole world world that you can start with a penny and he made money honestly every day he had to sleep outside in a hammock sometimes instead of a hotel he would go and eat in mcdonald’s nobody thought anything of him like he’s there and they’re not like oh this is a bum I’m afraid that no he just looked like he looked like.

▶ 30:52 That you know he’s just a young kid maybe looks a little you know he’s got some hair but he just showed the whole world you know you can you don’t have to be drug addicted hurting people harming people and and be on the he just showed it and he was on the street for 30 days he didn’t have to deal with extreme weather but he worked got some money and he traveled from the west coast and right now from what I see he’s in uh where’s he at nashville tennessee he’s trying to make it to north. Carolina and it’s it was shocking to just see this this young man is making uh making it through life on dollars he’s showing every dollar amount he made and how much he spent and you’re watching him do it and I think to.

▶ 31:50 Myself he’s making money. Honestly he’s not hurting anybody he’s not on drugs so obviously we have a problem he’s a witness to everybody out here who’s on drugs and hurting people. Amen it has to do with our minds our our morals and our truth what we allow we’re not going to punish wrong. Anymore and so we got to change our perspective on uh this. Situation we’re not solving in in california we’re not solving anything by ena enabling drug users to stay on drugs and think oh they can’t change it they can’t change they need to get off this guy wanted to get off there’s people that want to quit and we want to enable those that want to get off to do.

▶ 32:48 It it sounds kind and nice to help uh or to enable but it’s hurting them. And uh this guy he is sharing and exposing the system and he saying that these government programs they they were once a place where you had to you were required to be off of drugs sobriety was required but all of a sudden now you not required to be surprised so you can be in these government houses and you can be doing drugs and you know a drug adct so basically they’re enabling you to do and stay in your situation you’re not restoring the relationships with your family you’re not restoring and becoming independent you’re going to keep up the harm and the hurt and it’s not good and we got to start really con caring about the condition of people.

▶ 33:41 We don’t want uh policies that keep people dependent on government because we want to please the people I have some pictures here of some good pastors we have John macarthur. Uh good old brother John macarthur standing up for truth you got good old brother jack hibbs over in chino hills right jack hibs he he speaks uh he’s vocal about government and about um government things and he’ll talk you have uh pastor rick warren at the top best-selling book uh what is it called the purpose-- driven life we got these wonderful pastors here. That are uh you know I don’t know anything bad about them but God is pouring out his spirit on what all people not all leaders not all pastors what on all what all people Joel chapter 2 verse 20 28 I will pour out my spirit on all flesh all.

▶ 34:55 People your sons and daughter ers will prophesy your old men will dream dreams your young men will see visions even on my servants both what men and what women so the spirit of God is for both men and women and is there a third gender here is there a fourth no same language as the Old Testament men God in the beginning he made them what male and female God pours out his spirit on what what men and women women are no less than men the same spirit that is in men is in. Women thy sons and my daughters will what prophesy so that girl can open her mouth.

▶ 35:50 Yes some of you may not know why I’m pointing that. Out uh and certain circles women are looked down on and they’re not they’re told to be. Quiet and the in the church in different churches Hebrews chapter 8:1 no longer shall they teach your neighbor uh or say to one another know the Lord because they will all know me from the least to the greatest so here God when he uses his language he’s using everyone he’s using whoever anyone all I’m pouring out my spirit to all all can know me and so this is so important because his spirit is for all people and if the spirit is for everyone then he is calling everyone to know. Him and so we can’t justify our behavior and say oh well my pastor he’s a great pastor oh well my pastor he’s the bestselling author my pastor he stands up to the government what about.

▶ 36:54 You you know you don’t need to be a bestselling offer but are you doing good are you speaking the truth are you supporting and voting for what is. Right the scriptures say in the New Testament that we will all stand before the what the judgment seat of Christ and when we stand before the judgment seat of Christ we’re not going to have our youth pastor there we’re not going to have our pastor there or our parent there and we can’t say uh well they they said and they were the ones this of course is if you’re of age right and you’re standing before God and you’re responsible for your behavior but nobody’s going to be there with you you are responsible God is calling all flesh everyone anyone pouring out his spirit on who all people.

▶ 37:59 You can’t stand before God and say well that my pastor was happy with. Me what’s the question is God happy with you are you living a life are you doing what is right in his sight not in your pastor’s sight but my pastor loves God my pastor gives to the church my pastor prays with fervor my pastor is filled with the spirit. Who has disqualified you from praying who has disqualified you from loving God who has disqualified you from giving to God’s house who has disqualified you from praying with fervor and being filled with the spirit you’re not disqualified you’re in the mix you have an opportunity. Do you have an idea of who has disqualified.

Right Matthew 11:28 Jesus says come to me all you who are weary and burdened I will give you rest all of these here is red letters I didn’t I didn’t make it red I’m apologize but this is red letters this is Jesus talking it’s important for us to understand that because when these things come out it’s Jesus who’s saying them they have so much more they have a lot of authority when it’s Christ’s words come to me all you who are weary and burdened I will give you rest let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink whoever believes in me as scriptures have said rivers of living water will flow John 8:12 I am the light of the world whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but have the light of life Revelations 3:20 I stand at the door and knock if anyone hears my voice opens the door I will come in and eat with that person and they with me do we want God’s.

▶ 40:02 Rest what do we have to do come to. Him and we have to be doing some work do we want to drink of that living water what do we have to do we have to come to him and drink okay you come to Jesus if you come to the Bible you have the Bible in front of you I came to God but if you don’t open it you didn’t partake of it right so you come to it and then you what you you get it in you amen you come to your knees and you don’t just sit there and say uh and you think your prayers you start drinking by praising by praying by calling out to God seeking him okay that’s what it was that’s the translation. Here do you want his light of life what do we have to do whoever what.

▶ 40:59 I am the light of the world whoever what follows you want the light of life what do you got to do follow. Him the light of life does that make sense to you remember those plants out there what are they getting from the sun right now they’re getting energy and they’re getting that what that life see we’re like a plant we’re like a tree God says in the script scriptures and we need that light to give us. Life do we want to be with him and speak with him and commune and talk with him at the dinner. Table then we have to. What hear his voice and open the door do you these scriptures go directly to you and God is is saying this is what you can have if you.

▶ 42:08 Respond let’s go over who he’s talking to uh come to me he says what all let how. Many uh John 7:37 let what anyone Jesus said on the light of the world and then what whoever I stand the dork if what. Anyone are you a whoever are you a anyone are you in all. Yes do we. Understand we are all candidates for knowing Christ we’re all candidates for drinking of him for coming in and eating with him and spending communing time with.

▶ 43:02 Him amen John 7:41 still others asked how can the messiah. Come from Galilee does not the scripture say that the messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem and the town where David lived and so the people were divided they were talking and discussing of Jesus little did they know that Jesus actually was born in Bethlehem I guess they didn’t know. That when Matthew 7 sorry I don’t know Matthew 7:28 when Jesus had finished these sayings the crowds were amazed at his teaching and as we said earlier whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves take up their cross and follow me.

▶ 43:57 Matthew 6:33 and red letters seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well and so God’s people we get divided we get divided on what is right and what is truth we get divided on God’s. Teaching but here we understand the calling Jesus is saying first we must deny ourselves. Amen we got to take up our cross deny yourself means to deny that sin that lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes the pride of life we got to deny that stuff. Matthew 6:33 encourages us to pursue our God amen to pursue after the kingdom of God and his righteousness our we pursuing after him this.

▶ 45:18 Morning Matthew 16:13 Jesus asks who do you say I am who is God to you is he just the savior that forgives you of your sin that bled and died or is he the resurrected king that you follow is he the king of your kingdom and when you go to your king you say king how can I serve you how can I live for you how can I follow. You who do you say Jesus. Is and yes he died on the cross for her sin amen thank you Jesus but he also rose from the grave he is also king and he wants to be king over your life and mine amen my sheep listen to my voice I know them they follow me I give them eternal life they shall never perish no one will snatch them out of my hand and so we’re reminded here that God’s sheep listen to his voice he knows us and they are the ones that follow.

▶ 46:25 Him and these are the promises that we have in Christ when we listen when we follow him this is very consistent. Amen and who do we say Jesus is in our life God has such powerful. Promises so just a simple question this morning who do we say that Jesus. Is are we pursuing him do we seek. Him and are we willing to live a life that is pleasing in his sight like jotham are we willing to follow him I we went through all the situations this morning amen where we saw the leaders good leaders we saw bad leaders we saw good we saw uh bad people we saw good people amen and God is calling us and telling us that he can fill us with his spirit he can make make us whole make us new and God is calling us to follow him and so we’re going to come to the altar this morning Jesus is calling and he’s calling all of us everyone anyone whoever all and we’re in that group and we want to pursue him this morning amen you want to pursue Christ this.

▶ 47:49 Morning are you hurting and broken. Within overwhelmed by by the weight of your sin Jesus is. Calling have you come to the end of yourself do you thirst for drink from the well Jesus is. Calling oh come to the altar of the father arms are open wide. Forgiveness was born with the precious blood of Jesus. Christ oh what a savior.
