The Lord is My Shepherd: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Pastor David G. Kincer closes his series on the first and great commandment with Psalm 23, King David’s personal account of following the Shepherd despite enemies, betrayals and flaws. Each line shows a benefit: no lack, rest, the Spirit’s living water, restoration, righteous paths, no fear, a table before enemies, an overflowing cup, goodness and mercy. The key is to make him your Shepherd and apply what you learn.
Why end the series with Psalm 23?
Short answer: This last session on the first and great commandment goes to Psalm 23, where King David gives a personal account of following the Shepherd and its benefits. David was handsome, a skilled musician, warrior, businessman and speaker—so serving God is not just a crutch for weak people.
▶ 0:00 This is our last session. On tackling the first and great commandment the love the Lord God with all our soul mind and strength. When God gave me this topic I wanted to go to Psalms 23 first and God said no don’t go there and so I went around another way to finally get there and then I understood why okay. We’re going to go to Psalms 23 which is a Psalm of David and in this psalm you’re going to find a person giving a personal account of following Jesus the shepherd.
▶ 0:53 Okay and that is king David he’s going to give a personal account and the benefits and results of following Jesus Christ the shepherd now to understand this you got to have some understanding of king David all right king David was handsome like me. Well that didn’t go over good. David was skillful was a skillful musician and singer superior he was a skillful warrior [unclear] he was a skillful businessman handling finances and he was skillful superior in speech he knew how to put words together and see this is important because the atheist and the secular humanists say religion is just for people that need a crutch the ugly people the homely people the people that can’t handle the world religion is just for them but David was superior in all these areas that the secular people honor [unclear] you don’t have to be ugly to serve God you don’t have to be stupid to serve God all right
Scripture in this part
Psalm 23:1 (NKJV)
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
— Psalm 23:1 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:18 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How did people know God was with David?
Short answer: It takes courage to serve God. The Bible says David behaved himself wisely and the people saw that the Lord was with him; he had a heart after God.
▶ 2:24 you don’t have to be a coward to serve God in fact it takes courage to serve God okay now that’s what that’s what the Bible tells us about David Bible also says that God was with him the shepherd was with him and not only was the shepherd with him but the people through David’s behavior the Bible says he handled himself wisely and the people saw that the Lord was with him through his behavior the way he handled himself. Hallelujah now it’s good so far in it yeah this is a guy that’s given us a first-hand account of following the shepherd Jesus now. David also had a heart after God.

1 Samuel 18:14 (NKJV)
And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the LORD was with him.
— 1 Samuel 18:14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 2:47 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What do the lion, bear and giant picture?
Short answer: As a teenager David killed a lion and a bear with his hands, then Goliath. Satan is a roaring lion, and Proverbs likens wicked rulers to a bear robbed of its cubs; the Shepherd protects us from darkness, wicked government and a wicked army.
▶ 3:17 Hallelujah do we. Do we have a heart to love God. David as a teenage boy couldn’t have been no more than 14. Slew a lion with his bare hand. And slew a bear with his bare hand didn’t even use the sling when that lion and bear came in to get a lamb and they got it in its mouth David went out there opened that mouth up killed that lion killed that bear and brought that sheep back to the fold wow. Now we know that Satan is as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour right. See David as a parable as an illustration see of Jesus saving us from the mouth of Satan the kingdom of darkness and the bear of course and Proverbs says that wicked rulers are like a bear robbed of its cubs see and so civil leaders that are wicked civil governments that are wicked our shepherd will deliver us from now this is powerful stuff folks.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 17:34-36 (NKJV)
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.”
— 1 Samuel 17:34-36 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:32 (quoted; reference not named in the message)1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
— 1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:59 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Proverbs 28:15 (NKJV)
Like a roaring lion and a charging bear Is a wicked ruler over poor people.
— Proverbs 28:15 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:36 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How did David handle Saul and betrayers?
Short answer: He didn’t kill Saul but let God deal with him. People he protected betrayed him, and his own soldiers wanted to kill him, but David encouraged himself in the Lord instead of defending himself.
▶ 4:38 Alleluia now. That conditioned David that got David prepared to kill the giant the military. The military champion. Goliath nine and a half foot tall and David went out there as a young boy young man and slew that military giant so here we have the shepherd protecting us from the kingdom of darkness a civil government and a wicked army. Alleluia is. Jesus great or what yes he is and we need to learn more and more about him and then. David was ready to deal with Saul Saul was chosen by God to be king and Saul turned his heart and David didn’t kill Saul David let God deal with Saul I mean oh there’s some things you don’t meddle with you let God do it okay David didn’t follow Saul in his bad ways his wicked ways and David had to run and David was out in the desert running from Saul David also.
▶ 5:58 Had to deal with his betrayers when he was out in the desert he protected people and he fed them and these same people when Saul came wanting to know where David was they betrayed him you ever been betrayed by someone that you did good to ya David didn’t kill them either. He dealt with it. Hallelujah he dealt with it and won them back later and then David’s own soldiers his own friends in battle the brotherhood of the military they turned against him. When the enemy came in and took their spoil and took their wives and their children while the army was gone they blamed David they’re going to kill David and David the Bible says went off and encouraged himself in the Lord do you ever do that or you just flap your mouth and attack.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 30:6 (NKJV)
Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
— 1 Samuel 30:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:55 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Proverbs 27:2 (NKJV)
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.
— Proverbs 27:2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:02 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Did David have flaws?
Short answer: Yes: adultery with Bathsheba and killing Uriah—yet through faith in the Shepherd to come, God forgave him, so no sin is beyond forgiveness. He was divorced, didn’t correct his grown children when one raped his sister, and lost his temper with Nabal until Abigail turned him back.
▶ 7:03 We have a tendency to defend ourselves well I [unclear] and the Bible plainly says he that boasts of himself his boasting is not good let another boast of you David just went off encouraged himself in God now see we’re talking about a level where Christ is your shepherd. Alleluia powerful very powerful and of course David had enemies the Philistines and the Syrians and so forth you know he had to fight all of these people and he won he overcame he [unclear] he overcame now David had some flaws too he committed adultery with Bathsheba. But he never did it again.
▶ 7:59 David killed her husband Uriah the Hittite a righteous man and the Bible says that God would not forgive the shedding of innocent blood and yet David through his faith in shepherd Jesus that was going to come and die for the sins of the world God forgave him of an unpardonable sin that’s how powerful the death of Christ is you understand that there is no sin that cannot be forgiven. Alleluia pays to follow the shepherd doesn’t David was a divorced man. When Saul chased him out of Jerusalem. His wife stayed back didn’t go with him married another man and had children by that man.
▶ 8:56 Isn’t divorce rampant in America today yeah and God didn’t give up on David because of any of these flaws and you’re going to see why when he gives an account of following the shepherd how [unclear] David did not correct his own grown children a lot of Christians today want to use the term. [unclear] love what is it unconditional love to just let their kids walk all over the rest of the kids in the house walk all over the family and everything else David would not confront his his grown kids when one of them raped.
▶ 9:49 His own sister. David didn’t confront it. David had some flaws and Christians today don’t confront their kids when they’re young or old they just want to be their buddy are you out there church and they let these kids. Defile the other kids. And you can’t do that is that an amen got to deal with this stuff David lost his temper of course no one in here loses their temper I can tell David lost his temper he had treated Nabal very well in his household and everything they both had and when David asked for a favor from him Nabal answered in a harmful evil way and David lost his temper saddled up got his army and he was going to destroy the house of Nabal all right and then.
▶ 11:01 Abigail which was a beautiful woman the Bible says see again you don’t have to be ugly to serve God. These atheists and these secular humanists are wrong they’re just flat-out wrong and she was a woman of great understanding. She was wise and she knew the mind of God what God was doing at that time she knew that God was removing Saul and placing in David she had spiritual enlightenment are you with me she saw what was going to happen she got a bunch of food she did what David asked for food and stuff took it down to David and asked David to forgive and ask David not to do this horrible thing of going and destroying a family and David humbled himself repented and didn’t do it alleluia don’t lose your temper. Folks he declares the Lord is my shepherd in spite of my flaws in spite of my enemies.

So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.
— 2 Samuel 12:13 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:52 (quoted; reference not named in the message)1 Samuel 25:32-33 (NKJV)
Then David said to Abigail: “Blessed is the LORD God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! And blessed is your advice and blessed are you, because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand.
— 1 Samuel 25:32-33 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:02 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does “I shall not want” promise?
Short answer: Psalm 34:10: they that seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing—eternal life, which is knowing God, wisdom, strength, righteousness, peace and joy, and food, clothing and shelter. Not great riches. Paul learned to be content in any state.
▶ 12:14 In spite of the difficulties the Lord is my what shepherd no matter Paul said no matter what season I am in I am there with what. Content and you can be content when the Lord is your shepherd and you’re going to see this you’re going to see the power of following the shepherd and the contentment that comes in any situation first he says the result of following the shepherd the benefit is I shall not want or I shall not lack okay Psalm 34:10 they that seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing so anything good God wants to give his sheep and David said this is the benefit of following the shepherd all the good stuff he’s going to give me what is the good stuff well eternal life for one that’s good and eternal life is also that you might know the father and Jesus Christ in it so you have a relationship you have eternal life it is a relationship with him and then the Bible says he’ll give us wisdom as we ask for it understanding knowledge counsel he’ll give us strength how many want to be a strong Christian I will not lack any good thing all right the kingdom is righteousness peace and joy I will not lack righteousness I will not lack peace and I will not lack joy joy that

Psalm 34:10 (NKJV)
The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.
— Psalm 34:10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 12:14Philippians 4:11 (NKJV)
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:
— Philippians 4:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 12:26 (quoted; reference not named in the message)John 17:3 (NKJV)
And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
— John 17:3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 13:17 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Romans 14:17 (NKJV)
for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
— Romans 14:17 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 13:38 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What are green pastures and still waters?
Short answer: The sheep lie down to rest, already fed, because the Shepherd takes care of the lion, bear and thief. Still waters are a place of rest; rivers of living water picture the Holy Spirit, given to all in the New Testament.
▶ 13:45 no man can take away peace that passes understanding. Righteousness that brings a good name to God I will not lack these things and I will not lack natural necessities food clothing and shelter. Hello there he didn’t promise you great riches like these people tried to tell you but he did promise that he would give you health he would give you food he would make sure you got shelter and you got clothing that is his promise you know it may be Salvation Army clothes I don’t know but it’s clothing you got it hello it may not have the alligator on it or whatever. Alright. Secondly he says he the shepherd makes me to lie down in green pastures this word lie down is lie down to rest ha rest.
▶ 14:47 I’m going to rest in green pastures green pastures is the food but they’re not eating they’ve already eaten and they’re relaxing why because Jesus the shepherd will destroy the lion they’re not worried about the lion they’re not worried about the bear they’re not worried about the thief they are resting because the shepherd is going to take care of them they have rest they have peace isn’t he called the prince of peace yeah. Are you out there church in this powerful now this is David given us a personal account. He leads me beside the still waters that does not mean deep waters well you know when the waters are moving it means the waters deep and the waters are shallow they’re moving and there were white caps and so forth no it doesn’t mean that at all all right he leads me beside the still the word still there is a place of rest he leads me to a place of rest beside the waters why Bible says out of your innermost being rivers of life-giving water will flow this he spoke of the what Holy Spirit which had not been given yet to everyone.
Scripture in this part
John 7:38-39 (NKJV)
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
— John 7:38-39 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 15:57 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does the Holy Spirit do?
Short answer: He convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment, empowers us to be witnesses (Acts 1:8), and leads into all truth. He says the baptism of the Holy Ghost is for today; tongues is not called the only initial evidence, though it’s important and a sign to unbelievers. The Spirit anoints us to preach and heal the brokenhearted.
▶ 16:08 The Holy Spirit visited people in Old Testament but in the New Testament we’re all recipients got it okay what will the spirit do the spirit will convict us of sin righteousness and the judgment to come convinces of that the spirit will empower us you shall receive power after the Holy Ghost shall come upon you not to shake and quiver and roll on the ground but to be witnesses unto him. Hallelujah I mean you know it takes a supernatural power to make you speak right live right to be a witness of who Christ yes and this baptism the Holy Ghost is Bible folks these people to tell you it’s not for today are lying to you okay they’re lying to you and these people would say the tongues is the only initial evidence of the baptism the Holy Ghost they’re lying to you too the Bible never says that but now you’ve got to admit three out of four times they spoke in tongues so tongues is important and one of the most important things about tongues is a sign to who the unbeliever.
▶ 17:24 Alleluia. Bible also says he will lead you into all truth Paul said spiritual things are revealed by the spirit. All right so he’s going to lead us in the Holy Spirit is going to confirm and convince us of what the Bible says what Jesus said what the apostles doctrine said the Holy Spirit is that power working in the earth with his people. Hallelujah and how many know that just brings peace you can rest in that and the spirit of the Lord is upon me for he has anointed me to what preach the gospel to the poor if you really got the Holy Ghost you’re not going to be quiet about the good news.
▶ 18:19 Because you’re going to live a life where they’re going to ask you what do you do the ways you do you know how come here then you go to what a chance to tell them about the good news because you you know light and darkness don’t fit and the people in darkness when they see light they’re going to ask questions it all right yeah. Hallelujah. To open the eyes of the blind to set the captive free to mend up the brokenhearted is there a lot of people out there that are shattered in their life and the Holy Ghost comes to what give us the ability to mend up those broken hearts and we are at rest. We are at rest to do this we’re not struggling there’s no conflict the shepherd’s taken care of the lion he’s taking care of the bear he’s taking care of the thief man I can just live for Jesus.

— John 16:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 16:21 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

— Luke 4:18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 18:05 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does “he restores my soul” mean?
Short answer: He turns your soul back from evil to God and to your original destination—supernaturally, not by a program. When David messed up, the Shepherd restored him; Psalm 42:11 and 37:24: a good man may fall but won’t be utterly cast down.
▶ 19:18 Hallelujah. Number four he restores my soul. This word restore is turned he turns my soul the soul is the eternal part of you that will live forever the spirit you made a body soul and spirit and he’s going to restore your spiritual man he’s going to turn your spiritual man back from evil to God and not only that he’s going to turn you back to the original. Destination that you deviated from. Alleluia and who’s going to do it. The shepherd not a 12-step program not a [unclear] rehabilitation program not a psychological program supernaturally he is going to turn you to him.
▶ 20:18 From evil that’s the power of the Holy Ghost and we need more of that in the church I’m telling you he restores my soul wow how many could use a little restoration see when David messed up the shepherd what restored him he didn’t kick him out of the sheep fold he restored him that should be very comforting to you and David never did these things again he never killed another innocent man he never committed adultery again he repented and stayed repented a man so don’t use it as an excuse to go flagrantly committing adultery and all that stuff.
▶ 21:02 Psalms 42:11 why are you cast down and discouraged within me o my soul why you cast down hope in God for I shall yet praise him there are times when discouragement can come despair can come sadness can come can be the death of a child or a child gone wayward can be when your spouse leaves you for another person can be when you lose your job and and you know you got no financial income coming in there are things that can happen in life as we said earlier to mend up the brokenhearted there there are the season you’re going to go through where your your inner man is kind of shattered in your cast down all right and he’s going to restore that. Sorrow may continue through the night but what comes in the morning joy so sorrow is a one short period of time.
Scripture in this part
Psalm 42:11 (NKJV)
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
— Psalm 42:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 21:02Psalm 30:5 (NKJV)
For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.
— Psalm 30:5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 19:18 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Psalm 37:24 (NKJV)
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
— Psalm 37:24 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 21:58Why does he lead in paths of righteousness?
Short answer: For his name’s sake. 2 Peter 2:2 and Romans 2:24: when believers follow destructive ways the way of truth is evil spoken of and God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles. Show people why Jesus is the way.
▶ 21:59 Amen. Hallelujah. Alright. 37:24 Psalms though a good man may fall was David a good man heart after God God was with him yes did David fall yes though a good man may fall he shall not be utterly cast down it’s not over for him for the Lord supports him reaches out with his hand and supports him to get back up on his feet and get going again amen this is what David is telling us about the results of following the shepherd Jesus hallelujah. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his namesake. The Bible tells us in second Peter 2:2 that when the believers the sheep follow destructive ways of false prophets.
▶ 22:59 They cause the way of truth to be evil spoken of God wants us to live rightly because it brings a good name to him and when we don’t the unbeliever and [unclear] look at the way of truth the Bible and Jesus is not the way to go they’re no different than we are yet they’re telling us that Jesus is the great I am yet they do the same things we do it says in Romans 2:24 the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you the Gentiles of the unbeliever when you break God’s law they blaspheme they speak evil of God’s word. Alright so it pays like David to get that dealt with and corrected get back up and walking right amen.
Scripture in this part
2 Peter 2:2 (NKJV)
And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
— 2 Peter 2:2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 21:59Romans 2:24 (NKJV)
For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.
— Romans 2:24 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 22:59Why fear no evil in the valley?
Short answer: AIDS, 9/11, war, danger walking home in Detroit, a terminal diagnosis—you the Shepherd are with me, and perfect love casts out fear. The rod deals with opponents and the staff disciplines; God disciplines but doesn’t cast us away.
▶ 23:58 Alleluia. We want the name of Jesus to be well spoken of don’t we yes we claim he’s our savior then show the people why see God don’t want us to live a life that brings a reproach to his name number six if I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I. will fear no evil the AIDS epidemic is sweeping America. 9/11 is destroying New York or whatever I’m in a war in Vietnam or a second world war whatever though I walk through the valley my life is in danger when I was in Detroit just walking to school my life was in danger mainly walking back from school they didn’t get up early.
▶ 24:54 They were not early rising it was walking home from school man. You see though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death even if you got valley fever and you’re told you’re not going to live any more than 30 days or you got cancer and you got 30 days to live or whatever I will what fear no evil no harm why why doesn’t he get afraid because you the shepherd are with me you’re going through this with me the Bible says God is love doesn’t it and the Bible says perfect love casts out what all fear. Why should you be afraid of the liberals and the socialists and the secular humanists and all that in the end God is going to bring them down.
▶ 25:55 Alleluia. You need to fear for your children being taught stupid things in public school and get him out of there and all that yeah but in the end we’re going to win this thing folks. Alleluia. Number two why he fears no evil your rod and staff they comfort me. Well and Psalms it tells us that he breaks the nation’s the unbelievers with a rod of iron he’s going to deal with the unbelievers he’s going to deal with my opponents a man and his scepter is a what scepter of righteousness. He is going to deal with me right now he’s not going to do me wrong. For his namesake he’s got a name to live up to doesn’t he I’m always telling God you’re the one that made these multiple promises you want to brag what you can do now get moving and I.
▶ 26:59 Right yeah he said he could do it and the Bible says that he has the power to perform what he promised and that’s what our shepherd is and then there’s another staff that the shepherd has with a crook on you ever seen that that’s the discipline the sheep hey get back in here boy all right. If he has to he takes that thing and breaks their leg you’re not wondering again for a while are you there and to know that God will discipline us and not cast us away is very what comforting. If he has to bring pain into our life actually it isn’t him it’s our action that brings pain and he uses it to what get you back in and on the right road that you’re supposed to be on you see they comfort me this brings comfort.
Scripture in this part
1 John 4:18 (NKJV)
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
— 1 John 4:18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:33 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Psalm 2:9 (NKJV)

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
— Psalm 45:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 26:34 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does the table before enemies mean?
Short answer: Picture a battlefield where a general sets a table with china and steak and the enemy can’t touch you. We can live for God out where the enemy is, even invite enemies into church. Luke 10:3: I send you as lambs among wolves.
▶ 28:00 Rest peace man I can serve God relaxed. Amen. Number 7. Why he fears no evil you the shepherd prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemy now just imagine with me with my sanctified imagination for a minute you’re in the Second World War or you’re in the Vietnam war and man bullets are flying as the enemies got you surrounded their grenades are being thrown the tanks are shooting gun the airplanes are strafing and all this oh you got C rations and all these bullets going on you got to eat so you open up a can of C rations or K rations or whatever [unclear] and you eat.
▶ 28:56 And then. General Eisenhower steps out on the battlefield. has somebody put a table down they put china and silverware glasses. Drinks food steak man all of a sudden the bullets can’t come all of a sudden there’s nothing the enemy can do to you and you get out of your foxholes the men get out of the foxholes and throw those K rations down and they go to the table and they eat in the presence of their enemy. when you go to a table to eat you are at rest. Amen and he prepares a what table.
▶ 29:51 For us not only food but such a protection that the enemy can’t touch us. There there and to back this up. John 10 those in the sheepfold will go in and out and find what pasture we got to not just live for God and be comfortable for God in the church walls we got to be comfortable and live for God out there where the enemy is where the secular humanists are the atheists are the criminals are we’ve got to have that kind of confidence in our shepherd and David had it. Hallelujah. We don’t have to hide from our enemies folks we can invite our enemies into the church.
▶ 30:48 hopefully to get them saved. And I’m shocked at how many Americans get saved and then they want to protect them and their kids and their family from the rest of the sinners when they were just one last year. I’m sure I see it all the time I deal with it all the time you can let these people come in here oh my are you one of those just two years ago you were exact person. Folks we can handle our enemies Jesus the shepherd can handle the enemy amen alleluia. Powerful in Luke 10 I send you forth as a lamb among what wolves. Folks out there there’s a lot of opposition and he says I’m sending you forth as a lamb a lamb has no defense against the wolves except for the shepherd.

Short answer: Enough for you and to share. In the Old Testament the widow’s vessels and Elijah’s barrels; in the New, rivers of living water from your innermost being—the Holy Spirit.
▶ 31:50 And the shepherd. Alleluia in David’s account just amazing. Alleluia. You anoint my head with oil my cup runs over now you know a cup that’s running over is overflowing not only has enough liquid for you to drink but if you catch the overflow it will have liquid for others to drink. Hallelujah and I remember the widow that was dying and her son was dying. The prophet told her to get some vessels and she got vessels till she couldn’t find any more but they weren’t running over you know Elijah when he called down fire from heaven he told them go get barrels and they put it in the trough around the altar.
▶ 32:51 But in the New Testament he didn’t use barrels or vessels or cups he says out of your innermost being. Rivers of life-giving water will flow. This he spoke of the Holy Spirit which was to come which has come now is it. Hallelujah didn’t Jesus say they that believe and follow him will never thirst again in that what he’s talking about here your cup runs over you not only got enough you always got spiritual drink spiritual encouragement spiritual peace and you got so much you can share it with us. Amen ah.

2 Kings 4:3-6 (NKJV)
Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased.
— 2 Kings 4:3-6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 32:35 (quoted; reference not named in the message)John 7:38 (NKJV)
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
— John 7:38 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 32:58 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How is anointing linked to unity?
Short answer: Psalm 133: how good for brethren to dwell together in unity—like precious oil running down Aaron’s beard, and there the Lord commanded the blessing. Isaiah 65:8: the new wine is found in the cluster. Unity should be around morality; 1 Corinthians 5:11 says not to keep company with an immoral brother.
▶ 33:45 Hallelujah you anoint my head with oil. Psalms 133 behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. Say the word unity unity. All right then he gives the parable the allegory it is like the precious ointment upon the head that ran down upon the beard they want just a little dab of oil you know these Pentecostals us Pentecostals I should say and we get a bottle of oil we buy at the store and we put a little on our finger bop down they go. No this anointing oil was poured out it ran down their face down their clothing down to the ground and how many of you know they didn’t lose the anointing when they washed.
▶ 34:51 You ever heard people say I lost the anointing. The anointing set you apart for the master’s use that anointing oil is the Holy Spirit is he he said as the dew of Hermon as the dew that descended upon mount Zion that that that quiet watering of the Lord those quiet times are important as the roaring rains and aren’t they yes then he says this. This is where the Lord commanded the blessing. Word of the Lord command the blessing. Unity say it unity. even life forevermore when the church will begin to work with other sheep put up with other sheep accept other sheep God will command the blessing hallelujah and that means all these good things that he promised us will be ours.
▶ 35:52 But we got to get a long folks we got to let Jesus change people not us. We got to accept people got to [unclear] this sheep amen you want the blessing get a unity with the church the church in America right now is very disunified very I’m talking about the whole church yet and even in local churches they’re not in unity. Alright. It takes work to get this job done and how many know the sheep weren’t paid. In the church world people don’t want to do anything unless they’re paid in America that’s where we’re at and the other nations not so even pastors have a job and work in other nations but in America I will pay me I.
▶ 36:51 Mean no your pay is the word of God and the spirit of God. Are you out there. Where the church going to be if we don’t have volunteers folks. If we pay everybody to do everything we don’t have any money to reach the lost at all. Isaiah 65:8 the new wine is found in the cluster not the single grape here in a single grape there and a single grape here and two grapes there and three grapes over here and five grapes in their little cluster over here the new wine the anointing of the Holy Spirit the joy the Lord is found in the cluster were attached to the vine and who’s the vine Jesus we are the branches and we bring forth fruit because we’re all drawing from the same vine amen and that’s where the blessing is found it’s found in the cluster if we can unite and worship united in prayer unite and working God said I command the blessing.
▶ 38:09 Now that was good preacher. Now it’s not me that’s David talking I’m talking David’s good here ain’t he yeah don’t don’t get me wrong when I say that we’re not talking about me we’re talking about this scripture that is good teaching hallelujah. In first Corinthians 5:11 it says don’t keep company if any is called a brother be a fornicator sexual immoral greedy an adulterer a one that talks angrily and and and and puts down other people with their mouth they can’t control their tongue a reviler a drunkard intoxication getting high on marijuana getting high on drugs getting high on alcohol or if they’re an extortioner they use their power they use their influence or they’re just bullies to get what they want he said don’t fellowship with those people they can speak about Jesus they can have funny doctrines and all the rest but the unity should be around morality.
▶ 39:12 How many know we nobody has a problem with a moral Catholic though they have idols and but if their moral they don’t do anything to hurt you do they. Alleluia I mean know a lot of people that don’t have idols don’t live morally yeah. So the only thing that should separate us and that is we just don’t associate with them so they learn to behave right. We still treat them like brothers. can’t divide over stupid doctrines alright. But we need to unite around behavior moral behavior is that an amen yes.

Psalm 133:1-3 (NKJV)
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing— Life forevermore.
— Psalm 133:1-3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 33:51Isaiah 65:8 (NKJV)
Thus says the LORD: “As the new wine is found in the cluster, And one says, ‘Do not destroy it, For a blessing is in it,’ So will I do for My servants’ sake, That I may not destroy them all.
— Isaiah 65:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 37:211 Corinthians 5:11 (NKJV)
But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.
— 1 Corinthians 5:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 38:30What does “goodness and mercy shall follow me” mean?
Short answer: You leave a trail of goodness and mercy behind as Jesus did in each town; people who follow it find you and then Christ. Paul said follow me as I follow Christ. Dwelling in the house of the Lord all your days means backsliding is out of the question.
▶ 40:08 Surely goodness and mercy will follow me how many days of my life all the days of my life well you back in here with testimony [unclear] well you know Satan’s been chasing me all week oh hallelujah but I came in to church tonight and [unclear] I got the victory again I know what in the world of these people talking about. goodness and mercy is following you folks because you’re doing good and you’re acting merciful that’s what’s following you if you follow Jesus if you follow Jesus what did he do he healed the sick he raised the dead he got people to repent change their ways and you could go into the nation of Israel and the first town you know you could see the sign that Jesus had been there why because he left mercy and goodness behind him and you go to the next town and there’s more evidence Jesus has been there why because he left mercy and goodness behind him then you go over here to another town and they’re mean and green and ah you go well.
▶ 41:25 Jesus hadn’t been here so you go back to the original town and you move forward to the next town and finally if you keep doing that who you’re going to find. Jesus active somewhere with mercy and goodness alleluia and that’s exactly what we do we leave behind us a trail of good behavior of being compassionate and merciful and loving and they can follow that and they can follow us and Paul says follow me as I follow Christ and if they follow our goodness and our mercy they will wind up not only finding us the source of it but they will find Christ the source of our source number 10 and I will dwell in the house of the Lord what is backsliding a potential backsliding is the potential when you don’t follow the shepherd I will dwell in the house of the Lord where does God dwell he dwells when his people gather together he will be in the midst of it so God is there and I’m going to dwell in the presence of God how many days of my life all the days of my life backsliding is just out of the question why because I’m following the shepherd and when I fall he picks me up and he puts me back on the right road he restores my soul he feeds me with the best of his word he gives me the Holy Ghost to convict me of sin he is my shepherd and I will
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 11:1 (NKJV)
Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
— 1 Corinthians 11:1 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 41:25 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What is the key to these benefits?
Short answer: Make him your Shepherd and obey: if you love me, keep my words. 2 Timothy 3:7: ever learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth. Books, vows and beliefs don’t make a good parent, spouse, athlete or Christian—applying right principles does.
▶ 42:56 live for him all the days of my life hello. But what’s the key you got to make him your shepherd. In a shepherd you have to obey just like the father in the house used to be obeyed just like the husband-wife relationship that we brought you to be obeyed just like the military commander and you’re the soldier you obey Jesus said if you love me you will keep my words. Saying you love him doesn’t mean a hill of beans. Unless you back it up with action second Timothy 3:7 ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
▶ 43:52 Ever learning. You can go to Bible studies you can read your Bible you can read Christian books. But if you don’t come to the recognition of the truth to the application of the truth it’s worthless I. Can learn to drive a car. Now I can pass the driving test but if I do not use that car that truck or something it doesn’t benefit me why I have applied the instruction. Are you there. Ever learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth. May ask you this question does conceiving a child make you a responsible parent no anybody can have sex and conceive a child doesn’t make you a responsible parent at all.
▶ 44:55 Does reading a book on child-rearing make you a responsible parent oh man I got all the books in the Christian bookstores on child rearing and a secular book [unclear] oh man I am a great parent no that doesn’t make you a great parent. Does believing you’re a great parent make you a great parent you know how many people I talk to I’m a great parent and they are a lousy parent but they think they’re great they believe. No it doesn’t let me ask you this. Say in the marriage vow I will forsake all others as long as we both shall live for better for worse through sickness and in health I’m going to stay there the saying the marriage vow make you a great spouse.
▶ 45:52 Absolutely not does believing you’re a great spouse make you a great spouse no it doesn’t does getting reading a book about how to be a great spouse make you a great spouse how about going to a marriage counselor Dobson himself and getting marriage counselor man surely when I leave I’ll be a great spouse does that make you a great spouse no and I told the church that when Dobson came out and that was no aspersion on Dobson he was a great it was a great voice for us in the church but folks the change comes inside. And only God can do that. Buying a football and believing you’re the next Peyton Manning does that make you a football player and confessing man I’m a Peyton Manning I’m [unclear] oh [unclear] confession [unclear] I am going to be the next quarterback of the NFL does that make you a football player no what makes you a football players getting out there and running faster blocking better and doing what it takes to be that football player.
▶ 47:10 And less buying a Bible. Well I got 18 versions of the Bible actually I got more than that I got about 24 on my computer I read the Bible I read the Bible through every year [unclear] I go to Bible studies [unclear] yeah I believe. I’m a great Christian I believe. Does that make that person a responsible good Christian no doesn’t and that’s where we’re going wrong we’re learning and not applying. We’re believing and not exercising in all cases applying right principles makes one successful is that an amen.
▶ 48:09 Responsible participant not faith alone not knowledge alone or not a promise or vow alone it is my application of right principles for that area which will make me a great person in a good person in that area amen. Hallelujah. David said the Lord is my shepherd he gave us all these benefits how many will stand with me this morning and say shepherd lead me I want to be I want to participate I want to experience like David the benefits of the great shepherd will you stand with me and let’s sing.

About this transcript
This transcript comes from YouTube’s automatic English captions, which supply the timing and the words. Punctuation, capitalization and paragraphing were added from the speaker’s pauses and then corrected by hand, and obvious caption errors (names, Bible references) were fixed; his wording was not rewritten. “[unclear]” marks a word or name that was not clear. Editor notes: Points to check: David “no more than 14” killing the lion and bear by hand; God “would not forgive the shedding of innocent blood” called an unpardonable sin forgiven; Elijah’s barrels and the widow’s vessels (Elisha in 2 Kings 4); tongues “three out of four times.” Sensitive content kept as spoken: atheists and secular humanists; public schools; liberals and socialists; James Dobson and Peyton Manning named; moral Catholics “though they have idols.” Select any time to jump to that moment on YouTube.
