On Easter Sunday the message walks through Jesus’ scourging, shame and death and asks what we will do with it. A new creation requires the new covenant: God forgives and forgets, writes His law on our hearts, and replaces the heart of stone. Like Lazarus four days dead, we are called out by His word, loosed, and brought into a relationship of knowing Him.

What did Jesus endure?

▶ Watch this part (0:14)

Short answer: Matthew 27 starts with a whip; a band of soldiers scourged Him, and He died even for them.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 0:14 This is God’s time this is God’s day amen every day is God’s day actually Sunday lord’s day uh and we want to also give him time in our lives every day it’s his day amen amen Matthew chapter 27 we read about the death of Jesus Christ and it starts with a whole band of soldiers uh who were commissioned and a whole band could be several hundred soldiers a whole band of soldiers came before Jesus and they scourged. Him scourging is when they get the cat of nine tales and at the end of the uh whip it has bones or glass or something sharp and uh when it goes into the skin it rips and Jesus Christ endured.

▶ 1:06 Scourging from this band of soldiers how many times we don’t. Know but we’ve got a lot of soldiers here and if everybody takes their turn that’s at least one per guy at 600 scourgings that’s that’s a lot we don’t know how many times he was scourged they drove a crown of thorns in his head to mock him because they said he was king of the Jews. They spat on him they beat his head with a staff they mocked him by bowing. Down and they delivered him up to be. Crucified and I definitely don’t want to be counted with those who. Mock God. Amen today there’s a lot of people mocking Christ and mocking God and I don’t want to be in that number no not at all no thank you.

▶ 2:01 But Jesus Christ also died for them he died for the soldiers that were scourging. Him they didn’t know who Jesus. Was but they were beating him and while they whipped him and while they put the crown of thorns on his head his blood began to flow and in Isaiah chapter 52 14 it says his face and his whole appearance were marred disfigured more than many mans and his form beyond that of the sons of men and this movie the passion of the Christ it has uh jim cavil and he’s they show how he got beaten and all this stuff happened and uh uh but Christ went through much more than that his beating and his disfigurement was more way more than that it was horrible more than that than any other man disfigured more than any other man’s is formed beyond the sons of men that’s what the scriptures.

Scripture (NKJV)

Matthew 27:26-27 (NKJV)

Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him.

— Matthew 27:26-27 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:14

Why does he mention Jesus’ nakedness?

▶ Watch this part (3:04)

Short answer: They cast lots for His garments; He bore the shame for us. Then He said it is finished and committed His spirit; no one took His life.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 3:04 Say they took his garments and they cast lots for. Them it also says in the scriptures in Psalms that he could see all of his bones and when when I bring this up I’m I’m showing that Jesus was naked on the cross he had no clothing he had no underwear he had no cloth and it was a shameful thing they did to our God. And he bore the shame and the embarrassment for you and for. Me and the son of God king Jesus was willing to stoop so low so that we could receive his blood so that we can be in right relationship with him and they crucified. Jesus and then he said it is finished everything that he set out to do that he came to do that he was sent to do he finished he said it is finished I’ve fulfilled all the prophecies that were prophesied about me I’ve healed all the people that uh I’ve healed so many people the scriptures say if if there were books written about everything he did it would fill the whole world of everything he did there would be so many books written and it says that he gave up his spirit in Luke chapter 23:46 Jesus called out with a loud voice and he says Father into your hands I commit my spirit nobody could take his life from.

▶ 4:33 Him you see that’s important he had to wait for that person to say to offer him that vinegar he had to wait for that moment because he was fulfilling scripture and after he received that vinegar he said what it is finished because in Psalms there was a prophecy that he had to fulfill and so he is enduring everything. He is enduring all of this scourging and this beating and the c the the crown of thorns on his head and he is not giving up his spirit because he’s. Waiting for the moment where he has fulfilled everything and saying what it is finished so nobody could take his spirit he had to give it. Up in feast 1 Peter 2:22 says says he committed no sin this is Peter Peter was one of his disciples he was with him he says he committed no sin nor was there any gile or you know bad stuff found in his mouth he didn’t speak bad like we do.

What did Pilate say?

▶ Watch this part (5:46)

Short answer: I find no fault in this man; Christ died so we don’t have to go to hell.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 5:46 Amen we can use some change in our tongue in Luke chapter 23:4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd I find no fault in this man so Pilate spoke to the chief priests the religious people and he spoke to the world and God is speaking to us and he’s speaking to the religious people today there is no fault there is no sin in Jesus Christ and it’s important to understand I when I was young and 18 years old I had a friend who went to iraq and he died and I went to school with him and he died and uh you know I was talking to his mom and you know got getting emotional and you think of the scripture greater love has no man than this than a man who lays down his life for his friend but my friend who died in battle could not save me from my sin amen Jesus Christ is special because he is the lamb of God who has come to take away the sins of the world that’s what John the baptist said when John the baptist saw Jesus coming down he said behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world and why is that because he is God and he had no what.

▶ 7:09 Sin. And Jesus Christ his death is. Powerful we don’t have to die we don’t have to go to hell we don’t have to endure the suffering he’s done it for us. Romans chapter 5:8 but God demonstrates his love for us while we were still sinners Christ died for us as we quoted earlier before we were even Christians before we came to know him these soldiers that were whipping him you got to understand later on in acts there’s a centurion who is devout uh person believing in God and he’s trying to find his way and and he finds God but these men at that time they didn’t know who he was and while they were sinners Christ died for them Christ died for these centurions he died for these soldiers that were whipping him and he’s died for.

What does His death mean for our mistakes?

▶ Watch this part (8:16)

Short answer: He was wounded for our transgressions; by His stripes we are healed. What are we going to do with it?

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 8:16 Us even while we make our mistakes Isaiah 53:5 he was wounded for our transgressions he was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him and by his stripes we are healed this scrip uh this picture is just depicting that God is protecting us by his death on the cross he took all of our transgressions he took our iniquities and he bore it on himself and that’s what this picture is depicting here 2 Corinthians 5:22 says God made him who had no sin to be sin for us. So that we might become the righteousness of God might become why is it might why is it a maybe because you have a choice.

▶ 9:10 What are you going to do what are we going to do now that we have Jesus Christ his death on the cross what are we going to do with it are we going to go on and live a life that is pleasing to him or will we just say hey Jesus get up on that cross come on get up of there I need some forgiveness got my forgiveness okay see you later. God we do what live the way we want believe the way we want hey Jesus get up on that cross again come on come on get up there come on I I know it’s tough get up there is that how we approach God with. Pride no no please don’t humble yourself. Jesus Christ has made a way for us to be in right relationship with him through his death on the cross.

What if a Christian sins?

▶ Watch this part (10:06)

Short answer: We have an Advocate; the evidence you are in Him is that you obey His word.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 10:06 And Christ has died for his church that’s us and he has died for the world those who don’t know him in 1 John 2:1 it says if anybody sins and he’s talking about Christians if you read the scriptures there he’s talking about the brethren if any of the brothers sin we have an advoc advocate with the father brothers and sisters okay we have an ad advocate with the father Jesus Christ the righteous one we can come before him if anyone obeys his word love for God is truly made complete in them and this is how we know we are in him if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation old things have passed away behold all things have become new so this formula I’m talking about is in three verses here we kind of get a direction that God is taking his people that God wants to take the whole world he wants wants us to be in him he wants us to be with him he wants us to have a relationship he wants us to be close to him okay when it’s talking about in him there’s an example of the vine that’s why we’re called the vine right Jesus is the vine we are the branches you want to be connected to that source of life Jesus is that source of life and that’s what it’s talking about here we want to be in.

▶ 11:25 Him and the evidence that you are in him is if anyone what say it with me. obeys his word that’s why we were singing that song what a powerful word it is his word is powerful his word is right if anyone obeys his word love for God is truly made complete in. Him now if you know the scriptures and you know Jesus’s red letters you know the greatest commandment in red letters spoken by Jesus is what can somebody tell. Me love God with all your heart all your soul and all your mind right as to love him and it’s saying here if anyone obeys his word love for God is made complete so when we love God we are obeying when you do you do you have any priority in your life right now when you leave this place when you go home to take time to love your God or is it all about.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

1 John 2:1-5 (NKJV)

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

— 1 John 2:1-5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 10:06

How distant are you keeping God?

▶ Watch this part (12:42)

Short answer: You can keep people at a distance, and God is asking how far you keep Him.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 12:42 Us is it all about. You do you love God God is asking us this morning how distant are you keeping yourself from God you can keep people at a distance right you got people in your life that you’re like I don’t want to keepy I don’t want to get away from me but we do the same thing with God we do the same thing with Christ and he doesn’t deserve that Christ wants to be close he wants to be like a spouse to you someone that you see every day that you can talk to every day that you spend time with you can converse with he wants to be that close with you amen. And it says that if anyone is in Christ he’s a new creation old things have passed away behold all things have become new there is a transformation that happens in Galatians chapter 6:15 it says neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything what matters is the new.

What matters?

▶ Watch this part (13:51)

Short answer: Becoming a new creation; a makeover with a haircut and suit only changes the outside.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 13:51 Creation and so in your life God the scriptures are pointing out hey this new creation you becoming a new person a transformed person is what. Matters if you want to get a takeaway from the scriptures get this goal this takeaway that we need to be a new creation. Just wanted to show this example real quick there’s a guy here he’s got dreadlocks and I just want to show the transformation of his look so you see him here he’s got the big beard. Dreadlocks uh and I’ll show you in the middle.

▶ 14:47 So he’s got a n he’s starting to he’s starting to take shape right nice haircut in the back around the sides in here okay now he’s working on on the working on the beard trimming it down right he’s looking better and then they give him a suit you know you just give somebody a suit a trim and it does wonders it’s. Amazing so there he. Is now of course I mean wow. I think I need to hire him for. Something some kind of professional. Service let’s go back here oh my goodness.

What does the new covenant promise?

▶ Watch this part (15:40)

Short answer: I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more; murderer or addict, Jesus won’t bring it up again.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 15:40 Man where’s Stephanie. At that’s how we. Started now of course it’s all in the outward. Right it’s all in the outward and you know you can change somebody’s outward appearance but inside and that’s what what God is saying this morning inside God wants to change you on the inside he wants to take who you are on the inside and transform you and he has the power to do it we’re going to look at Lazarus real quick the story of Lazarus before we get. There a new creation requires a new covenant and I’ve been harping on this new covenant for weeks now and for a long time because I think the new covenant is very important in Jeremiah chapter 31:31 and Ezekiel 36:26 it says I will for uh the the there’s six parts to this new covenant and probably more but these are the big ones I will forgive their n their wickedness and remember their sins no more you come to Christ as a murderer you come to Christ as a sexually immoral person a drug addict a you know all this stuff you come to him Jesus Christ will forgive you he’ll get your wickedness out of you he’ll cleanse you he will nail it to the cross as as we learned this morning and he’s not going to bring it up to you again do you know who will bring it up to you.

▶ 17:06 Again Satan will bring it up to you again people will bring it up to you again but Jesus is not going to bring it up to you again he’s going to say hey where are we going let’s go come on we’re on a we’re on the path to what being a what a new. Creation I will give you a new heart heart and put a new spirit in you we’re going to understand a little more what that means I will take the heart of stone out of you heart of stone my goodness that doesn’t make sense I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts I understand this in my work you know they they present these concepts and they teach you how to do this stuff and you got and you look at it you’re like you know you’re just you’re overwhelmed with all this information so over time and after you do it 100 times s you start to install it into your mind okay when I go to work and I log in and I I just start typing it’s all it’s just in there I just start typing commands I know how to it’s there and God wants to do the same thing with his word with his law he wants to write it and install it in your heart so when you walk and you go your your day by day you’re not guessing it’s just in you right I will cause you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws I will cause you don’t we need a little cause in us don’t we need a little enabling don’t we need a little like I need a little little ump you

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Jeremiah 31:31-34 (NKJV)

“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

Who will know God?

▶ Watch this part (18:37)

Short answer: All, from least to greatest; poor believers in other countries know God more than Americans.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 18:37 a little kick in the pants yeah I’ll go that way. Right they will all know me from the least of them to the greatest as we were uh singing about and we’re reminded through Christ’s prayer for everyone that they will know me this is part of his new covenant and this is also an example of the the veil being torn if you don’t know about Moses’s tabernacle I’m not going to get into it but there was a room where everything was happening where the presence of God was happening the the word of God was revealed it was the room to be in and only the high priest could be in that room and God tore the veil when he died on the cross he ripped that veil and his new covenant is that all can know me from the least to the greatest from the richest to the poorest.

What does Lazarus’ death picture?

▶ Watch this part (19:29)

Short answer: Day four, decomposing: sin makes us dead or puts us on a deathbed, but Christ has a solution.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 19:29 The people in different countries that are poor living in in you know horrible conditions they can get on their knees they can and in fact they do in other countries people know God more than us Americans they know their God more than we do well. Sorry but it’s true it’s true I I think I need to go to another nation and experience. This I will be their God and they will be my people. John 11 he is dead uh talking about Lazarus we’re going to look at this example in John chapter 11 Lazarus is dead his heart is not beating he’s in a tomb his mind and his brain is not running his body is decomposing I’m getting really graphic this morning I’m sorry bugs and worms are eating his flesh he is day four he is putrifying by day four there’s maggots on your I mean it’s disgusting what’s happening but that’s what’s happening his his or organs have been starting to eat been eating away because in your stomach you have bacteria and enzymes when your body stops running it just starts to spread and the bacteria will eat away at your flesh.

▶ 20:51 So we’re we want to see the new covenant in this story of Lazarus so he’s dead he’s in a bad condition and he’s in darkness Ephesians 2:1 says you were dead in your t your transgressions and your sins so. Sin uh makes us dead okay right now you are breathing in your natural body and you have in your mind you have your mind but you also have your spirit and that spiritual man is going to live forever in heaven or in hell and your spiritual man just like your body has a condition all of you w walked in this morning and it’s great to have all of you but your spiritual man also has a condition is your spiritual man on a deathbed is your spiritual man alive is it dead is your spiritual man are you excited this morning are you a Christian that you’re walking you’re talking you’re doing great or is your spiritual man.

▶ 21:55 Suffering and that’s what sin does. Sin is either going to keep us dead or it’s like a disease and it’s putting us on a deathbed and a lot of Christians today don’t realize that the sin in their life is hurting. Them I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more that’s part of the new covenant here God has a solution God Jesus Christ has a solution for the state of our spiritual man John 11:1 our friend Lazarus is what dead but I go that I may wake him up and Jesus says I am the resurrection and the life so Lazarus his body is dead is our spiritual man.

What is the stone?

▶ Watch this part (22:51)

Short answer: A heart of stone, unwilling toward God; today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 22:51 Dead Lazarus had a sickness before dying are we spiritually sick leading to death whatever case you have whether it’s death or sickness Christ has a solution if you sin you have an advocate with Jesus Christ and you’re sick if you are dead spiritually he says I am the what the resurrection and the life and that’s what we’re celebrating this morning he has the power to bring you all the way back from death to. Life I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you I will take the heart of stone out of you John 11:38 Jesus came to the tomb and he said what take away the stone when I read the scriptures and I when I study the scriptures I see the new covenant a lot in stories and that’s why this is important and the story of Lazarus here he’s giving an example just like the valley of dry bones it’s an example of of what of the fulfillment of the new.

▶ 24:02 Covenant and God is saying that he will give us a new heart today if you hear his voice do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion what is a heart of stone a heart of stone is a heart a mind that is unwilling that is hard toward God and his word and we have a lot of hardness we have a lot of hardness toward God in America we have a lot of hardness toward his word in America and we need a new heart and maybe your heart is not only hard maybe your heart is depressed maybe your heart is is all these kind of things maybe your heart is angry maybe you got a heart that is. Just in an awful. Condition and Jesus is saying I can give you a new heart I the resurrection and the life I can make it completely new and God is asking us this morning do we have a hard heart toward him toward his word he’s come to give you a new heart a heart of flesh that beats a heart of flesh that is responsive to his word and sensitive to his word.

What did His word do?

▶ Watch this part (25:21)

Short answer: Lazarus, come forth: His powerful word brought the body back together and calls us out of darkness.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 25:21 I will put my law on their minds and write it on their hearts I will be their God and they will be my people so God in his new covenant is saying I am going to use my word and I am going to make you mine and John 11:43 he cries out with a loud voice and he says Lazarus come forth don’t you want God getting loud for you I want God being loud for me. Michael and he cries out with a loud voice he’s Lazarus. Come. Forth and it says he came. Out and in your life you may have been told that you have a calling on your life but in first Peter 2:9 you must respond to the first calling and that is his calling.

▶ 26:17 Of it says he called you out of what darkness into his wonderful light are you willing to respond to the first call to come out of darkness to come out of the control and under the rulership of Satan to his light to his word and to his truth you must also understand Lazarus at this point the bugs are eating his body his body is deteriorating his brain I don’t know what the state of his brain is but I’m pretty sure that was thing was going his heart all his internal they’re all being destroyed right and when he says come. Forth everything that had been eaten away all of the junk in his body was removed Jesus restored what was eaten away and he became he was restored to full health and we know Jesus can do that amen he did it in the valley of dry bones he brought them from bone all together put flesh on them if you don’t know that story you need to read it Ezekiel chapter.

▶ 27:36 37 and we also want to realize and recognize that the words of God are powerful as we saying when Jesus spoke and he said Lazarus come forth his word brought his body back together and his powerful word can do the same for. You he can bring your body your spirit spiritual man back together no matter what state it is. In he came out bound hand and foot with grave. Clothes and just like we’ve been learning uh when Israel came out of Egypt the pharaoh did not want to let them go pharaoh did not want to let Israel go he wanted to keep his slaves and he chased them down even to the red sea and the red sea is where God delivered his people from Egypt and you come out of the tomb and you still are bound hand and foot with grave clothes Jesus said loose him and let him go and this is part of that new covenant he wants to enable you he wants to cause you to follow in his ways and keep his laws Ephesians chapter 2:1 you used to.

What does loose him mean?

▶ Watch this part (29:04)

Short answer: We were dead in disobedience, but He made us alive and washed, sanctified and justified us; such were some of you.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Unidentified speaker (not clearly Pastor Kincer)

▶ 29:04 Live under the control of the world and under the ruler of the kingdom of the air in in disobedience but God in Ephesians chapter 2 made you alive together with Christ and raised us together in 1 Corinthians 6:11 it says of such were some of you after it quotes a lot of the sins you used to be this way you used to be in sin you used to be sexually immoral you used to be a drug addict you used to be all these things he used to be. Angry he used to have fits of rage.

▶ 29:46 But you were washed you were sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by the spirit of our God so Christ has come to enable us to loose us from the the old life to free us and to get us on the path of a new creation John 12:2 Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him Jesus they all will know me from the least to the greatest uh this is part of the new covenant like Jesus prayed in the garden and like he says in the new covenant he wants all to know him Lazarus later on even though he was raised back to life he didn’t just run away from Christ it says here that he was one of those who sat at the table with Jesus Christ he continued on to know and to have a relationship with the son of God are.
