A church member filling in teaches from the parable of the talents that the servant hid his talent because his perception of his master was wrong. God is not a hard master: He numbers our hairs, delights to give us the kingdom and casts our sins into the sea. The hurdles to overcome are hypocrisy, bad choices and stunted doctrine, and the cure is the simplicity in Christ and His living word and Spirit.

Does she call herself a preacher?

▶ Watch this part (25:45)

Short answer: No; she says she is not a preacher, but she loves the word of God, which is full of surprises that can change our innermost beings.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 25:45 God we thank you for coming today and being in the midst of our our service here we need you. Jesus. If you want to follow along don’t feel like you need to but there’s a little sheet here there’s no blanks on this one like michael always has sorry Mr. Kincer but but there’s some little pens over here if you just want to put a little highlight or something like that uh something you want to remember and go back. To. All right so we’re going to start out uh I thought I’d like to share not a preacher.

▶ 26:38 Not a preacher but I love the word of God and I love to share things that uh like Rita said this morning if I come up with something profound well there’s nothing I don’t think I’ve come up with anything profound but but God’s word is just full of surprises and things that can change our innermost beings so that’s what we’re dealing with the power of the word so in Matthew. 25 there’s a parable there and it’s about uh it’s called the parable of the talents but it’s kind of uh misleading because most people talk about it as talents as your gifts what God has in given you that you can use and if you don’t use it they’ll they’ll be taken and given to someone else and that’s kind of the crux that you usually hear but I I think we need to read that I was going to skip that let’s let’s go there Matthew 25 I’ll read that one just to get us going and then you guys have some scriptures you’re going to read um to get us through a little quicker so Matthew.

What is the parable of the talents?

▶ Watch this part (27:56)

Short answer: A man traveling gave five, two and one talents to each according to ability; those with five and two invested and doubled theirs and entered the joy of their lord.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 27:56 25:14 Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them and to one he gave five talents to another two to another one to each according to his own ability and immediately he went on a journey so remember that parables are truths that Jesus gives in the Bible um for us to learn something by and the parable is so that we can understand it they’re things of God but makes it easy for us to.

▶ 28:38 Understand let’s see and he gave one five to another two to another one to each according to his ability verse 16 then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them and made another five talents so he invested what was given to him um and likewise he who had received two gained two more also he invested what was given to him uh the focus is not on how many talents they were given one was five one was two that wasn’t the focus here it’s each according to his own ability which is very comforting God knows us he knows what we’re capable of and what we’re not and so he had given and then uh but he who had received one talon went and dug in the ground and hid his lord’s money now here it specifically says money so it’s uh it can be a gift or or a um talent but it it here specifically says money and so after a long time the Lord of those servants came and settled account and he who received five uh brought another five and said Lord you gave me five and I have gained five more and then the second one uh who g

Scripture (NKJV)

Matthew 25:14-23 (NKJV)

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

— Matthew 25:14-23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 27:56

Why did the one-talent servant hide it?

▶ Watch this part (30:08)

Short answer: He said I knew you to be a hard man, and I was afraid; the master called him wicked and lazy.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 30:08 he gave two he said I’ve brought you two more and the master said enter into the joy of the Lord then also who had received oh that’s two and then uh down in verse uh 24 then he who had received the one talent came and said Lord I knew you to be a hard man reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed so keep that in mind.

▶ 30:43 Yikes to his master he said this and I was afraid and went and hid your talent in the ground look there you have what is yours but look at the response here but his the Lord answered and said to him you wicked and lazy servant you knew that I reap where I have not sown I gather where I have not scattered seed so you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers and at my coming I would have received back with my own interest therefore take the talent from him give it to another for to everyone who has more will be given and he will have abundance but from him who does not have even what he did have will be taken away and cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness there will be weeping and nashing of teeth so very very harsh harsh um response from the master right and we can look at that and think why the other two servants did good what why did this third guy.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Matthew 25:24-27 (NKJV)

“Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’ “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.

What brought the servant there?

▶ Watch this part (32:00)

Short answer: His perception was wrong: he didn’t understand his master. Godly fear is respect, and in that fear you would invest.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 32:00 Just hide it and he said he was afraid now the master called him a wicked and lazy. Servant. So maybe he was just wicked and lazy but in my mind I want to know what brought him there why why when he had two others that were given why. So think about what that servant said I knew you were a hard. Man and uh he basically said you gathered where you sowed not he said he was prosperous he was we wealthy he was prosperous um even if he didn’t apply a whole lot of effort so the master he had a view of that master and he said he was was afraid and he buried what was given and it basically was wasted he did not invest it so in looking at that I thought this man’s.

What has God planned for mankind?

▶ Watch this part (33:12)

Short answer: He crowned man with glory and honor and planned from before creation to have a people in relationship with Him, and He will fulfill it.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 33:12 Perception I call it perception it was wrong he didn’t understand his master right he shouldn’t have had fear there is a good fear godly fear which is respect and in that kind of fear you would invest it and he had the other guys to follow the example of so we need to make sure uh this truth applies to us that we have a good perception and understanding of the master who is Jesus right he is God he is Jesus our Lord and we have to have a great uh a good understanding so I’m going to go through um just starting from Genesis just to mention creation uh to set up what our perception should be what our understanding of our master let us make man in our own image uh there God walked and talked and it said God was pleased so we are made in the image of God that should say a lot and God was pleased in Psalms 8 David king David said what is man that thou art mindful of him thou mest him a little lower than the angels and

▶ 34:43 crowned him with glory and honor so God has put that on mankind glory and honor and is pleased and just from the those few verses we see God had a plan from before creation to create a people for himself to walk to talk to be in relationship with and we know he will fulfill that plan regardless of who does what if you’re the first to with the talents or you’re the last one regardless God will complete his plan but we want to be like those first to servants amen we want to invest what God has given us and we want to have a good uh perception and understanding of God the God we serve so we have great value to God now this is where I asked if you guys could read a few scriptures we’re going to hand the mic around to get through this list and it’s a list because it gives us a good balance of a really good balance so we want to take the time to go through these so Stephanie has the mic and we’re going to we’ll go ahead and start with the top there Matthew 10:29 through.

Short answer: If you love Me, keep My commands, and they are not burdensome; people get scared looking at the Ten Commandments.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 41:33 So going on if you love me you keep you obey my commands and it says they are not grievous they are not burdensome 1 John 5:1-5 says um a lot of people when they look at the ten commandments and there’s the Psalms and the prophets with laws as well but in the ten commandments they get scared and think I don’t know if I could keep all those I I don’t know but it says they are not grievous they are not burdensome they are there for us so that God can bless our life protect us and teach us how to live in this life so loving God loving your neighbor as yourself loving ourself properly in in the the way that Jesus divided up the ten commandments is it is not burdensome God’s word and spirit when we add that to our life God gives you power uh it’s not just our own self trying so hard to keep the commandments or laws of God but it says that his word and his spirit gives us power now there’s hurdles to overcome of obviously life has.

What is the simplicity that is in Christ?

▶ Watch this part (42:59)

Short answer: Paul feared minds would be corrupted from it as the serpent beguiled Eve; simplicity means singleness, focus, purity and sincerity.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 42:59 Those and I want to read to you. Um from 2 Corinthians 11:3 Paul writing to the Corinthian church and he says but I fear lest by any means as the serpent beguiled Eve through subtility uh meaning craftiness or subtle so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity. That is in Christ so we see here it’s not a a one-time thing um we can come to know God but it has to be maintained we have to continue to uh come before God to let God expose the things in our lives that are impure or that God wants to change and it says here uh the simplicity that is in Christ that is what we could be moved away from by many things by many means it says any means and it talks about our minds it’s our minds what goes into us from all different things that could affect our minds so that word.

▶ 44:21 Simplicity means. Singleness it means means to be focused it means purity and sincerity that is the goal in Christ the simplicity of the gospel to walk in it. Focused pure walking pure walking in. Sincerity in Psalms 119:130 it says the entrance of thy word which is a living breathing word giveth light it giveth understanding to the simple so we see here specifically God is not um making it difficult for those that are um highly educated or have a high iq or anything like that it says he giveth understanding to the simple through his word and praise.

▶ 45:29 God Matthew 6:33 seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness um we were familiar with that scripture and um with the busyness of life sometimes we go how do you do that but we can we can put the kingdom of God first in our life it’s priority number one if we don’t we go through life and it gets spent on every other thing and it’s usually all the natural things in life consume us right but if we will have that singleness and focus to say I have got to put some time and effort into the kingdom of God in my life if we will do that and make it a priority you will see amazing things happen.

What means can corrupt our minds?

▶ Watch this part (47:35)

Short answer: Craftiness, wrong desires and bad choices that lead to another and another, which is why they work so hard with young people.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 47:35 Evil which means hate it hate evil uh we can’t just turn our head away from it we have to acknowledge it’s there and hate it and whatever comes with that and cleave to that which is good now he says any means let’s talk about that for a minute any means um he was fearful that as the serpent beguiled Eve by his um craftiness his deceitfulness so I listed along there about habits and addictions um those are the hardcore things in our life that can distract us that can bring us to ruin to where we cannot.

▶ 48:33 Achieve uh God’s goal his ultimate goal in our life wrong desires bad choices bad choices you can make one choice and that leads to another thing and another thing and another thing and so that’s why we try so hard with young people to get them on the right course because we don’t want them to take that one step to a wrong choice and that leads down a long path of wrong choices. Amen now it can even be any means um that um causes problems in our mind it can be doctrinal it can be cultural idol. Ideologies it could be wrong sources of information it could be a lack of information and truth that we are.

Can a doctrine hold you back?

▶ Watch this part (49:27)

Short answer: She says in some circles a particular doctrine can stunt your thinking, or become an excuse not to pursue excellence while waiting to leave this world.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 49:27 Allowing ourselves to stay in. Um doctrinally I I say that because in some circles a particular doctrine can actually inhibit you from fulfilling and living the life that God has planned for you by because your thinking is is uh. Kind of stunted it stopped you’re circling around that one doctrine and you can’t seem to get out of that I’ll mention this one just does you know we all love one another it doesn’t matter if we’re different in this but um there are some that because of the doctrine of a rapture and a a instant you know Christians going up to heaven.

▶ 50:26 Um in the middle of life that some people do not pursue excellence in their walk with Christ they’re just looking for that time to just I’m leaving I’m not going to be part of this world you know it’s it can turn into an excuse let’s put it that way now this uh your minds he’s saying um that that subtleness and craftiness can affect our minds we talked a little about about that the mind is part of the soul okay now we know we have a body we know we have a spirit and we know we have a soul and first Thessalonians 5:23 says I pray God your whole spirit.

Does God want our spirit, soul and body?

▶ Watch this part (51:20)

Short answer: Yes; He wants all three preserved blameless. The carnal mind is at war with God, and His word and Spirit transform our minds.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 51:20 Soul and body be preserved blameless. God’s not just after our soul he wants our spirit he wants our body and it says our body is the temple of God and it contains our soul in our spirit and God wants it to be pure God wants it to honor him the carnal mind the Bible says is at war with God it’s not subject to the law of God nor can. Be that that’s a hurdle we live with a mind that is at war with God and so what do we.

▶ 52:14 Do we have to go to God for his word his living word that changes that mind and his spirit that dwells in us and that’s part of being born again to change and transform our minds so the soul the inner life is about our own experience our mind our heart our will our imagination our thoughts our desires and it’s a channel to express what God is doing in us Mary said my soul doth magnify the Lord it cannot be killed it came from God and it stays with God at death it stays with.

▶ 53:11 God what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul meaning the soul goes to God but there can be eternal separation from God in this spirit the same inner life is represented in our spirit in relation to God it’s our faith our hope our love our character our perseverance when Mary said my soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit doth rejoice in God my savior it feels and that spirit God is after he’s after our soul he’s after our spirit and so um when he says I pray God your whole spirit soul and body be preserved blameless he’s talking about all of us every part of us he wants in um covered in his word in his spirit so it says there in um I’m looking for the verse about.

What does the word of God discern?

▶ Watch this part (54:30)

Short answer: It pierces to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 54:30 The uh how the word looking for that verse um it’s excuse me just a minute okay it says in Hebrews 4:12 the word of God is quick powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart now that’s deep right. So God is like a surgeon he uses his word to change us he divides up within us that soul part of us and that spirit part of us and uh the writer here uses an analogy he divides it apart the soul and spirit and the joints in marrow if you think about a joint uh like here and that sword going through a joint it goes through the covering we have a covering on us right we have a covering covering our soul spirit our heart our mind and it goes down to to the marrow the marrow is where.

▶ 56:02 Cells make blood right it goes down to the life let’s put it that way it’s going through the container which we are like a container and it goes down to the very marrow and that’s where it says is a discerner of the thoughts he’s looking at our thoughts thoughts he knows our thoughts he knows the intense I n t n ts not int the intense of our heart that’s that’s the word of God that’s how powerful and living the word. Is. So when the people in Acts 2 who heard the preaching of the word this is why it says they were cut to the heart because as the preaching as the word went forth that word began to work in them God began to take it and by his spirit which he says his word is spirit it is life it began to work in them and they said what must we do and and that’s where we talk about repentance and so.

Why has God given us the word and the Spirit?

▶ Watch this part (59:10)

Short answer: For His ultimate purpose in us; He pours out His Spirit on all flesh and the Word became flesh. There is mystery, but it works in us.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 59:10 Word he has shown you oh man or woman what is good and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God. So that is God’s ultimate purpose for us that is why he’s given us the word that is why he gives us the spirit in Joel chapter 2:28 he said I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh we are all candidates to receive the spirit of God and in John 6 the words that I speak Jesus said they are spirit they are life now you you take that and you go okay those words written on that page are more than a written word they are spirit and they are life now you take that and you take when Jesus in John uh when it says the word.

▶ 1:00:18 Became flesh and dwelt among us how do we put that all together in our heads right there’s mystery in it and that’s okay we don’t have to understand it all but we see it we know it because it works in us that word and that spirit that Jesus is that. Word you don’t need to worry about the spirit and tongues some people worry about that what when they spoke in tongues in acts it says they were declaring the wonder wers of God we can all declare the wonders of God it doesn’t matter if you speak in tongues or not we just declare the wonders of God. Amen he says I will send you from the father the spirit of truth and he will testify of me in 2 Corinthians when we think about the commandments again the letter of the law kills but the spirit gives.

What did the religious people miss?

▶ Watch this part (1:01:27)

Short answer: The spirit of the law; Jesus walked in it, not the letter, when He healed on the Sabbath.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Church member (not Pastor Kincer; name not given)

▶ 1:01:27 Life the religious people of Jesus’s day they didn’t understand the spirit of the law they tried to catch him in things that the law said that he wasn’t supposed to be doing like healing on the Sabbath day or things like that when the spirit of the law that’s what Jesus was walking in not the letter of the law and that that’s why we need to give time not just to reading the words on the page but to letting it soak in letting it speak even if it has to be here here’s something I. Do when you’re reading and you’re trying to understand and takeing something until God speaks something to you.
