Religious Believers in God Can Oppose Both Jesus and God 03/18/2018: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Pastor David G. Kincer works through Paul’s sermon in Acts 13. The people and rulers of Jerusalem believed in God but didn’t know him or the scriptures, so they killed the body God lived in. God raised him, witnesses preached even to opponents, all believers are justified, and Paul warned mockers from Habakkuk 1:5. Jealous Jews contradicted and expelled Paul, much as churches today separate over doctrine.
Whose sermon is this?
Short answer: Paul’s sermon in Acts 13. Verse 27: the people of Jerusalem and their rulers opposed God, though all of them believed in a God.
▶ 0:00 Now I’m gonna give you this message just like it came to me like all the messages alright this one came to me an outline form this is a sermon from the apostle Paul in Acts 13 alright this is not my sermon I stole it the apostle Paul preached this and it’s very powerful okay so he is going to start in verse [unclear] 27 telling us who opposes God okay. The people of Jerusalem okay who lives in Jerusalem Jews. Okay what religion is in Jerusalem Jewish religion did they believe in God yes they believe in God they had their families there they work there but many cultures were there Egyptians came there Romans were there all of these cultures believed in God not the God of the Bible but a God okay.
▶ 1:05 so it’s the people he didn’t say the Jews [unclear] he said the people everyone there [unclear] was opposing God [unclear] and number two their rulers okay the Jewish priests the Jewish scribes which are the Bible answer people the Jewish elders which were over tens hundreds thousands ten thousands and so forth and the civil government both the Roman and the Jewish Sanhedrin they all opposed. God and they all believed in a God did we understand that. Now then he’s gonna tell us why they oppose God okay. Paul said because they did not know God they believed in the God they didn’t know.
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:27 (NKJV)
For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him.
— Acts 13:27 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:26 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Why did believers in God oppose him?
Short answer: They did not know God or understand the prophets read every Sabbath. Even children can believe, as Titus 1:6 shows.
▶ 1:58 They had no relationship with him they believed in the God they didn’t understand. See even the pagan gods they don’t understand what their God is. And. They did not know the words of the prophets read every Sabbath day oh. I read the Bible okay but do you know the Bible do you understand the Bible oh. I go to church and hear the best preachers so what Jesus was [unclear] nobody was better than him and a lot of people didn’t hear him are you there. So because they did not know God and they did not understand the scriptures read every Sabbath day they opposed God and the scriptures and listen in Titus chapter 1 verse 6 it says that a child can be a believer it says there that the ministers must be the husband of one wife with children that believe and don’t live wildly nor rebellious.
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:27 (NKJV)
For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him.
— Acts 13:27 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 2:21 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Titus 1:6 (NKJV)
if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination.
— Titus 1:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:00Can we fight against God?
Short answer: Acts 5:38–39: if it is from God you’ll be found fighting against God. We must take time to know God and the scriptures.
▶ 3:19 Children that what believe now the Bible tells us children can believe and yet the leaders and the Jewish people don’t understand the scriptures. Amen. folks if children can believe I mean [unclear] believe the gospel and experience it now okay so now remember in Acts 5:38 in Acts 23:9 [unclear] says if a purpose or act is of human origin it will fail concerning spiritual things if it is from God you will be found fighting against God. just [unclear] is it possible that we can fight against God because we don’t understand the scriptures and we don’t understand the God we believe in could that be true.
Scripture in this part
Acts 5:38-39 (NKJV)
And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”
— Acts 5:38-39 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:19Acts 23:9 (NKJV)
Then there arose a loud outcry. And the scribes of the Pharisees’ party arose and protested, saying, “We find no evil in this man; but if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, let us not fight against God.”
— Acts 23:9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:49How did they oppose Jesus?
Short answer: They killed the body God lived in. Acts 13:27–29: they condemned him, found no cause of death, asked Pilate to kill him, and fulfilled the prophets.
▶ 4:25 If that is true should we start focusing in on understanding God knowing God and the scriptures absolutely we need to take time for God. Now Paul’s gonna go into how they opposed God and Jesus all right he’s going to explain that they killed the body that God lived in and that was Jesus. Okay God came and lived in a human body born of a virgin and he’s going to explain that they killed the body you can’t kill God but they killed the body God lived in so he says in verse 27 still they fulfilled the prophets words in condemning him sentencing him to death because they didn’t understand the scriptures.
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:28-29 (NKJV)
And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.
— Acts 13:28-29 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 5:23 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What did Jesus look like on the cross?
Short answer: He was beaten until he was the most marred man on earth and his beard was plucked out. The handsome pictures are erroneous.
▶ 5:24 they sentenced him to death God in the flesh. Though they found in verse 28 though they found no cause of death in him [unclear] Jesus was an innocent man no sin within and they could find no fault with him Herod the Bible says couldn’t find fault with him Pilate couldn’t find fault with him and yet these people said kill him anyway an innocent man. They asked Pilate to put Jesus to death verse 28 verse 29 they fulfilled all the prophets words about him the vinegar the pierced side his clothes casting lots for his clothes. All the scriptures about Jesus being beat and marred like no other man on earth these handsome features you see of Jesus after his resurrection and after his crucifixion is totally erroneous.
▶ 6:29 they beat him to where he was the most marred Human being on earth are you there but we don’t like to see blood and stuff we like to see a smiling handsome Jesus with this full beard they plucked out his beard but no you don’t see pictures like that are you there and you know what happens when you pluck out a beard to pull out a beard the skin comes [unclear] you don’t see that and we just believe what the artists tell us because we haven’t taken time to really think about the Bible and what is real truth okay then they took him from the tree the cross and laid him in a tomb just like the Old Testament scripture said. after their opposition after they fight against God God
Scripture in this part
Isaiah 52:14 (NKJV)
Just as many were astonished at you, So His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men;
— Isaiah 52:14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:34 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Isaiah 50:6 (NKJV)
I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.
— Isaiah 50:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:46 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How did God answer their opposition?
Short answer: God raised Jesus from the dead, as was written; he was seen many days by many witnesses who now testify.
▶ 7:31 fulfilled the rest of the scriptures himself. Okay. God raised him from the dead as was written as was written if they would have known their Bible they would have known this. He was seen many days by those who traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem he traveled many times from Galilee to Jerusalem not just that last journey and he went and appeared to all of these people. Five hundred at one time the 12 apostles the 70 disciples he appeared to a lot of people teaching them the gospel and these.
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:30-31 (NKJV)
But God raised Him from the dead. He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people.
— Acts 13:30-31 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:40 (quoted; reference not named in the message)To whom did the witnesses preach?
Short answer: Verse 32: they declared the glad tidings—the gospel—to the very people who opposed God, not separating into cliques.
▶ 8:26 People who he appeared to and ministered to are now his witnesses to the people. See God finished the rest amen they thought they got rid of the witness of Jesus and what they did is cause God to raise up thousands to take his place isn’t that beautiful. Okay now Paul is going to tell us now remember this is still Paul’s sermon Paul is going to tell us now how the 12 apostles and the witnesses witness to the people in verse 32 he.
▶ 9:12 Says we declared to you glad tidings guess what the word glad tidings is the gospel it’s the same word the gospel [unclear] we declared to you these witnesses the apostles all of these people that Christ appeared to and they declared to you the gospel of Jesus Christ the gospel of God the gospel of the kingdom the gospel of righteousness the gospel of grace it’s all the gospel of truth it’s all one gospel amen and that we declared these witnesses that God raised up are declaring to you the gospel to who who is you the opposing people. The people that fought against God not like in America where we get in our churches and we just we just separate from any other church in the world because if they don’t believe what we believe and [unclear] have nothing to do with them these witnesses went to everyone and preach the gospel you.
▶ 10:21 Get that oh. yeah that’s why we have [unclear] we got over 120 denominations in America no there’s thousands more independent ones and we stay in our little cubby hole we pat each other on the back with the same old doctrine that we all unified on and we won’t hear anybody outside of it and if they disagree with us what I ain’t going to that church anymore ain’t gonna have nothing to do with those people anymore we’re so babyish. We’re so childish in America in our Christianity but not these witnesses Christ appeared to them and they went to the very opposers the ones who fought against God and they told them the gospel amen they didn’t separate from their company they didn’t get in their little cliques mm-hmm.
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:32 (NKJV)
And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers.
— Acts 13:32 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 9:08Whose job is it to spread the gospel?
Short answer: It’s the whole church’s job—not just the pastor, youth leader or deacons—and it means the gospel, not personal opinions.
▶ 11:18 And they didn’t get offended because somebody disagreed with them they preach the gospel every one of us has the right to what preach the gospel and that’s what this church and every church needs to do it’s not my job or the youth leaders job or the deacons job it’s all of our job as a church to get the gospel out. Not our personal opinions not our personal faith not our personal beliefs not our culture to get the gospel out could that be an amen. Now. That promise what promise the gospel that was made in the Old Testament God has fulfilled for us. He fulfilled the gospel promised in the Old Testament and then he goes into detail of what that gospel is God has raised up Jesus so his death burial and resurrection is what part of the gospel amen you cannot minimize the death and burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
What is in the gospel Paul preached?
Short answer: Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection; Psalm 2: “today you are my begotten son”—the virgin birth; and Psalm 16: his body would not see corruption.
▶ 12:32 you just keep preaching whether they want to believe it or not you keep preaching it secondly he goes into Psalms 2 he quotes Psalms 2 saying today you are my begotten son now he brings in the virgin birth 30% of Americans do not believe in the virgin birth because it’s not rational nobody can be born without a sperm and an egg well that’s why he’s God he don’t need a sperm or an egg he just speaks and things happen are you with me see he brought in the virgin birth and people today in America want to get rid of the virgin birth because it’s not rational it’s not rational thinking they want to get rid of miracles because it’s not rational it just doesn’t happen he’s God he’s above human capability all right then in the same [unclear] in the Psalms and he’ll not allow your Holy One to see corruption what he’s saying there is Jesus’s body was not going to decay.
Scripture in this part
Psalm 2:7 (NKJV)
“I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.
— Psalm 2:7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 12:39Psalm 16:10 (NKJV)
For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
— Psalm 16:10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 13:32 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What did Jesus’ death accomplish?
Short answer: Forgiveness of sins. By him all believers are justified from what Moses’ law could not; the shadow laws are fulfilled.
▶ 13:38 Like the rest of us we’re gonna die and all that beauty we worked on all these years are just gonna go to dust. But not Jesus his body did not decay all right thirdly. This man Jesus forgives sins now he tells us the purpose of his death to forgive deliver cleanse from sins that lead to the lake of fire so that was the purpose of his death and look at this Paul says by him by Jesus all believers are justified they that means they’re made right before God. how many believers all [unclear] start out justified made right before God you may have some problems in your life some things that aren’t right in your life but as a child of God as a baby in Christ you are justified before God all believers.
▶ 14:39 you can feel that and you can grow you can grow into adulthood there’s four stages of Christian growth and first John 1 chapter 1. which Moses’ law could not justify you so what is Paul saying all the shadow laws in the Old Testament are fulfilled in Jesus Christ and when the Bible says were not under law were under grace that’s what he’s saying the shadow laws you’re not under anymore I fulfilled them you’re under the real deal amen the lamb was Jesus the incense was prayer and praise are you with me the holy water is the Holy Ghost the candles is the word that lights and the spirit that lights lighting candles does nothing and churches do it holy water does nothing and churches do it does nothing it was a shadow of what is to come the light of a word and the light of a spirit is what that candle pointed to are you with me.
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:38-39 (NKJV)
Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
— Acts 13:38-39 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 14:14 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How did Paul conclude?
Short answer: Beware, mockers. Habakkuk 1:5: “I work a work in your days” which you will not believe though it is declared to you.
▶ 15:56 Hallelujah but people want to go back to the shadow laws he concludes his sermon this way. This is the conclusion of his sermon all right beware. mockers. insulters. beware. lest the prophets’ word come upon you. This is his conclusion and then he quotes out of Habakkuk 1:5 you see you notice how he used scripture to back up his statement in that what we should do today have absolute scripture to back up our statements not just our opinions and ideas and rational thinking
▶ 16:53 I work a work in your days I work a work in your days so when Paul was speaking this he is referring to the day he lived in and the people in Antioch and not to where the Antioch church was this was another Antioch city in Asia Minor that he’s there preaching to the people ok I will work a work in your days how many of you want God to work a work in our days how many of you know that God has and is working a work in our day how many of you know what that work is I didn’t think so. You see we can say things but we don’t know what God’s doing. And that’s why we oppose him because we don’t know what he’s doing.
Scripture in this part
Habakkuk 1:5 (NKJV)
“Look among the nations and watch— Be utterly astounded! For I will work a work in your days Which you would not believe, though it were told you.
— Habakkuk 1:5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 16:30Acts 13:40-41 (NKJV)
Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: ‘Behold, you despisers, Marvel and perish! For I work a work in your days, A work which you will by no means believe, Though one were to declare it to you.’ ”
— Acts 13:40-41 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 16:10 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What happened after the altar call?
Short answer: Verse 43: many Jews and converts followed, and Gentiles who believed in other gods believed the gospel.
▶ 17:49 All right that makes sense he says I’m gonna work a work in your days you will not believe though it be declared to you it is our job as a church to tell the world what God is doing in our day and to do that we got to know what God is doing. Does that make sense yeah. Hallelujah now. then he gives the altar call the altar call inviting people to accept the gospel to accept Christ to change their way he gives the altar call and here’s the results of his altar call are you interested yes. After this great sermon he gives the altar call and this is what happened.
▶ 18:47 Verse 43 many Jews and many Jewish converts a Jewish convert is a Gentile that’s converted to Judaism okay bloodline Jews and Jewish converts follow the gospel. Look at that short sermon and look what happened I mean he’s preaching to the people in the city they’re gathered around him and many the word many means a [unclear] big lot are you with me. Altar call. When the Gentiles heard the gospel they believed these cultures that were there that believed in Zeus and the Greek gods and the Roman gods and their own gods and their [unclear] gods and everything else whatever they converted they believed the gospel.
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:43 (NKJV)
Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
— Acts 13:43 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 18:47Acts 13:48 (NKJV)
Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
— Acts 13:48 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 19:27 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Who opposed Paul and Barnabas?
Short answer: Jealous Jews contradicted, insulted, persecuted and expelled them—as churches today separate from those who disagree.
▶ 19:46 Wow. Is there power in the gospel yes even after Paul said that many. won’t believe though it be declared to them many came to God that day and accepted their God they followed the gospel they didn’t just believe they also followed the gospel are you with me. Alright but there’s always the other crowd. Other crowd pay attention. Other jealous Jews. jealousy is having animosity bad feelings and anger towards somebody that is. Coming in on your territory here it is they’re challenging your beliefs your religious beliefs but I’m a Baptist I’ve been a member granddaddy was [unclear] Baptist I’m gonna step back.
▶ 20:56 They’re jealous because these people are changing right in front of them and they’re leaving the Jewish religion and they’re leaving the other religions and they’re coming to Christ God forbid that people come to Christ and follow the gospel. These jealous Jews and why do we separate today because we have animosity toward people that don’t believe like we do we don’t even know if our beliefs are Bible but we believe and if somebody disagrees with us [unclear] have nothing to do with you and American church is really responding like this. We don’t care if the gospel is being preached as long as we get a fine
▶ 21:50 Motivational sermon every Sunday and some rock music to back it up or the music we like to listen to [unclear] everything is centered around a social experience in most of American churches today. And we’re zealous and jealous for our beliefs and our little group [unclear]. These jealous Jews verbally contradicted Paul and Barnabas. They stood against them verbally contradicted what Paul said did Paul in this sermon say anything that wasn’t Bible no it was all scripture and they contradicted it because that’s what they believed but that’s what they were [unclear] in their denomination.
▶ 22:51 They verbally insulted Paul how many of you know that’s a big thing in America right now the liberals are great at insulting everybody and not clarifying their position they just insult every time we have a gunshot you know they want to do away with guns second amendment Americans don’t know their constitution good enough to stand up and say I don’t care if somebody was shot in high school the second amendment gives me a right to protect my family with arms and we got to know that constitution our founding fathers gave us a great constitution and it’s important that believers understand what God is doing today so they don’t fight against God and they don’t fight against a great constitution that we had amen
Scripture in this part
Acts 13:45 (NKJV)
But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.
— Acts 13:45 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 20:22 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 13:50 (NKJV)
But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.
— Acts 13:50 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 23:43 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How did denominations respond to the Spirit?
Short answer: Denominations expelled tongue talkers, but the Catholic church kept the charismatic movement after the pope heard Mr. Pentecost.
▶ 23:44 they persecuted that means they mistreated Paul and Barnabas. and we’re not gonna sell you anything we’re not gonna have anything to do with you yeah we’re gonna make your life miserable we’re gonna protest your house that you’re living in they they mistreated him you know Christians are great at mistreating other believers oh we’re good at it we’re not good at preaching the gospel to them and living it ourselves we’re just good at mocking insulting contradicting people that don’t agree. Are you in deep thought now. And then they expelled Paul and Barnabas and that’s what the American church does back there when God poured out his spirit on the denominational churches started with [unclear] Episcopalians [unclear] the Pentecostal [unclear] tongue talkers out when God moved on to the Lutheran church and wound up through all the denominations this in 1960s the last one being the Catholic church the Catholic church was smart enough they saw all the other churches kicking the tongue talkers out and the tongue talkers were growing I mean they were multiplying.
▶ 25:09 that the Catholic church had enough sense the pope called in David [unclear] you’ve heard me talk about him before David [unclear] was called Mr. Pentecost because God gave him a ministry where he could pray for people to get the Holy Ghost without touching them without anything [unclear] and he just [unclear] in a chair and the Holy Ghost come upon them and God did it to show that not everybody rolls around on the floor and gets slain in the spirit and all this stuff that the Pentecostals were promoting David [unclear] he was used in a [unclear] way are you there I mean it was [unclear] I mean you you should experience some of that it’s just amazing just totally amazing and so the pope called in David [unclear] and you can check this out on your internet search history you’ll find I’m telling you the truth and the pope asked David [unclear] about this and David [unclear] explained it to them and so the catholic church decided to give him a room in the back of the [unclear] what do they call that the church what rectory yeah they gave him a room in the back and the Pentecostals back there you know [unclear] might have been 50 100 or 200 you know and the Catholic church had thousands in the big center where they were back there.
▶ 26:31 Exercising the experience that they got from God. and so they kept the [unclear] the Catholic church is the only one that kept the Pentecostal the charismatic [unclear] now because they don’t want anything to do with the Pentecostal word so they called themselves charismatic the same thing they were just filled with the Holy Ghost and they spoke in tongues and they believed in the power the Holy Ghost and healing and everything that comes with it okay. You go into a lot of churches today and you just preach Christ crucified. righteous gospel gospel of grace and they won’t have anything to do with you because they have swung over to the gospel of reasoning.
What works of God won’t people believe?
Short answer: That starts the next series. Will you follow Jesus and his righteousness or reject, contradict and insult his gospel?
▶ 27:23 My question to this church and to those who are watching this. on the internet what works of God today. That believers and non-believers won’t believe though they are told them and this is going to start the next series. What are those works that God is doing in our generation. That believers won’t believe even though they’re told them. Are you interested. hallelujah. but today. The question is will you believe and follow Jesus and his righteousness.
▶ 28:20 Or will you reject contradict insult Jesus and his gospel of righteousness that’s the question you have to respond to from Paul’s sermon. Many religious Jews responded many Gentile believers in a false God responded how are you going to respond today. Are you gonna follow Jesus and it’s a serious commitment it’s a seriousness [unclear] it’s not well everybody stands all stand if no one stands I won’t stand no no you got to stand before God as a commitment that you’re gonna follow him not just believe but follow him is that fair enough.
