Overcoming the Wind and Waves: full transcript and answers

▶ 0:00 Good morning thank you for joining us it’s good to be in God’s house this morning we’re going to begin this morning with worship before that I’m going to invite Miss Woods to share the scripture reading this morning we want to remind you when we worship to exercise the nine ways of worship out of Psalms up here on the on the side we lift our hands we clap we play on instruments we stand we bow we dance before the Lord and we speak shout and sing unto God let’s exercise those things this morning Miss Woods would you please share the scriptures. Good morning it’s so exciting to be in God’s house. It’s first Timothy says I will therefore that men pray everywhere lifting up holy hands without wrath and without doubting but what I want to talk about and what I want to share is acts chapter 2 we’re all familiar with acts chapter 2.

▶ 1:07 And let’s read together this slide it says and there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews devout men out of every nation under heaven that’s Acts 2:5 on the day of Pentecost now Pentecost was a Jewish holiday people came from all around the Jews came to to Jerusalem for a festival that they celebrate every year which if you look at it through the scriptures it’s very powerful because you see God’s sequence of events was so intentional.

▶ 1:47 So acts chapter 2 and it says and when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one accord in one place and suddenly there was a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared unto them clothed in tongues like a fire and it sat upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance and there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews devout men out of every nation under heaven now when this was noised abroad the multitude came together and were confounded because every man from all these nations had heard them speak in their own language and they were all amazed and marveled saying to one another behold are not these which speak galileans and how here we every man in our own tongue wherein we were born now I’m not going to name all of the cities and all of the nations where they came from because I can’t pronounce them literally any.

▶ 2:54 It’s so beautiful if we look at this slide we see after Pentecost after the Holy Spirit fell upon them look where they’re standing they’re standing outside and they’re confronting all of these nations and what do you think is going to happen after Peter declares to them a word of God there’s going to be some that are going to receive it and they’re going to be changed they’re going to believe it and then there’s some that are going to go away mocking but if you think about it whether they go away mocking they’re still telling of the event in their nation whether they go declaring the marvelous things that God has done and when I read this I just couldn’t get it out of my mind for the last couple of weeks I’m just thinking wow what an awesome God we have how intentional how sequential the the sequence of events were purposed before they even knew it was amazing God has plans that are higher his thoughts are greater than our thoughts and when we can tap into him it is amazing what he will reveal and speaking in tongues they were speaking in different languages the thing I wanted to share and it’s a personal thing I was spending some time in prayer and and I speak in tongues I was speaking this word over and over and over again I thought okay I’m gonna stop right now and I’m just gonna go see what that word means I looked it up and the arabic word means this.

▶ 4:24 To know to believe and to declare and I thought whoa did God just show me something is that amazing to know to believe and to declare they knew to be in the upper room they believed that’s why they were there and praise God when they stepped out of that upper room and they saw the nations they declared it and that is our responsibility when we’re filled with the Holy Ghost boy they from that point on what did they do they turned the world upside down amen thank you thank you for your time foreign. Let’s stand this morning as we begin worship we’re gonna sing unto our God this morning we’re gonna clap and amen we have the joy of the Lord this morning.

▶ 27:18 Lord Jesus says was spoken at the beginning Lord God there were 120 people out of 500 Lord that went and tarried in Jerusalem God they went and waited God Lord we pray this morning for a heart God that will seek you God a heart Lord Jesus that will not give up on you no matter what’s going on around us Lord Jesus a heart that wants to stick with you no matter what storm is in our life no matter what war has to be fought God Lord we pray for our heart like those 120 people God Lord Jesus and we pray that you come and equip us like you equip them God the scriptures say that you’re the same yesterday today and forever God Lord this morning we look to you Lord Jesus we want to meet with you God Lord not a man a lot of pastor Lord not a an ideology in our world today we want to meet the king the master Jesus Christ please Lord Jesus would come before you this morning we pray for our heart like those people.

▶ 29:30 Lord we’re here to meet with you Jesus we’re here to find you to hear what you want to say to us Jesus we pray Lord God open up our hearts Jesus God we want to meet with you with you Lord in worship Lord we don’t want to just come and listen to songs we come to worship Lord to sing praises to our king Lord we come afterwards Lord to pray and ask you Lord to instill your word in our hearts make us a different person Jesus this morning we pray that you’re that you would be in the word the message spoken Lord that it would transform our hearts. We want to grow God we want to shoot out another. Branch out of our tree Lord we want to grow higher Lord we want to grow stronger Jesus so we may be able to stand against the wind and the storm God please God we pray we ask this in your name amen.

▶ 30:35 They find your seats we want to talk about overcoming this morning. And we’re going to start looking at Psalms chapter 65 verse 77. And before I get into the examples in the scriptures of our disciples. We want to understand some things of how the Old Testament or the Psalms describe the waves and the wind. In Psalm 65:77 it says you who steal the noise of the seas and the noise of their waves and the tumult of the peoples so here in this scripture it likens waves to noise. And the tumult of the people the noise of the people right we all have noise coming out of us. The question is is it good is it right does it agree with God Ephesians chapter 4 14 that we should no longer be children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the trickery of men and the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting so here Paul helps us understand this example of wind and he says that when that doctrine can come from all these different places come and go and take you in all these different directions.

▶ 31:59 But don’t be tricked. People are crafty don’t be deceived. Stick with God’s doctrine what Jesus’s doctrine and the apostles doctrine. Psalms chapter 93 verse 3 the floods have lifted up the floods have lifted up their voice their voice. The floods have lifted up there waves. So we’re learning here that the waves and the wind are voices. Okay. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters then the mighty ways of the sea Psalms 89:9 you rule the raging of the sea when its waves rise you what still then and Jesus when he came and he spoke and he taught he stopped people from talking right.

▶ 33:07 He’s still the raging of the sea when they came and questioned him and tried to trap him his responses were what they shut them up and they went back to their priests and the priest would say what’s the matter with you and he would say you never met a man like this guy no one’s ever talked like him so we looked to our disciples in the scriptures the first story is in mark chapter 4 36. They took along in the boat as he was. They took Jesus in the boat. And and a great windstorm arose and the waves beat into the boat so that it was already filling. But he was in the stern asleep on a pillow and they awoke him saying teacher do you not care that we are perishing then he rebuked the wind he said peace be still and the wind what ceased.

▶ 34:04 And there was a great calm. But he said why are you so fearful how is it that you have no faith but one of one of the first things I want us to be reminded of is that you need to wake up God in your life when you come into church you’re here to worship and connect with God yourself you’re not here to be entertained. If you’re going to church to be entertained you’re there for the wrong reason or you’re missing out on God’s changing in your life. When your storm comes or before your storm comes don’t wait for your storm to come in your life call out to Jesus now he’s with you the Bible says we’re two or three together he is there in their midst he inhabits the praises of his people g we don’t want just Jesus in our midst we want him stealing freezing stopping the enemy in our lives.

▶ 35:04 The Bible says out of the mouths of babes and sucklings I’ve ordained praise to still freeze stop destroy beat back the enemy in the avenger I encourage you if you are not coming to God’s house and praising God yourself it’s time to change. You need to wake up God. He said Jesus got up said peace be still and one of his questions is why are you so fearful. And so we get very scared and we get afraid. Amen. And fear causes you to do things that you shouldn’t do make decisions that you shouldn’t make people can put you in fear and you fear it so much that you make a decision against God’s word.

▶ 36:04 And that’s the kind of fear he’s talking about don’t let fear overtake you that you run away that you give up that you’re no longer part of the house of God amen. How is it that you have no faith so here we go the faith is being tested. Faith actually means something it’s more than just oh I have it in my head I believe God I’ve got faith no no no no wait a second now you’re in the boat. And the boat there’s a storm coming up are you going to be afraid then are you going to keep believing that Jesus is going to bring you through this and do you believe Christ’s enough that you are going to wake him up in your life in the by reading his word by worshiping and praying to him by fasting are you going to wake God up.

▶ 37:06 He’s in your midst. The Bible says that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit amen he’s here he’s in you but he you’ve got to go to him you’ve got to do the steps necessary to wake him up don’t wait for the storm don’t lean on somebody else you can do this yourself. Jesus stopped the storm don’t be afraid. Another example we find in Matthew 14:22 there in the boat again how many you know if Jesus tells you to get in a boat you better think twice. Right. Are you getting the boat you know what happened last time Jesus I think I’ll take the the road on the the land I’m not sure if I want to get in the boat right by this time.

▶ 37:59 They’re a little skeptical what’s going to happen if we go out on this boat but Jesus it says he made his disciples get into the boat and said go before go before me to the other side you know I don’t know when you’re going to show up to the other side I don’t know why you’re not coming with us they didn’t answer they just said okay okay we’re going we’re going and that’s a good heart amen they obeyed they listen. And it says the boat was now in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them walking on the sea when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were troubled saying it is a ghost and they cried out for fear. Now were they afraid because they were being tossed by the waves or were they afraid because of the ghosts not sure at this point.

▶ 38:52 Okay. But when Jesus arrives on the scene he says three things. What is his first name be of good cheer oh yeah thanks God first you send us out here now we got a storm I’m being tossed we’re about to sink and then what’s the first thing you tell me. Be a good cheer. Okay let’s go let’s call this our psychologist now okay if I’ve got a problem in my life what’s the first thing you’re gonna tell me oh we’re gonna do this this and this are you gonna tell me be a good cheer they like no that’s playing correct. Right. What does Jesus say be a good cheer. Put a smile on your face.

▶ 39:45 There’s a storm in your life hallelujah. Praise the Lord. And then what does he say it is on. When they came to arrest Jesus Christ when Judas betrayed him and they said are you Jesus and what do you say I am he. Boom. And they were knocked down to the ground. When he said I am he. How many know when Jesus says it is I it’s powerful. When Jesus comes in your life and you’ve got a smile on your face and you’re in a storm and Jesus shows up how many know your solution just walked in the door amen.

▶ 40:40 Our God is powerful. And he says do not what be afraid it’s hard not to worry it’s hard not to be afraid you’re we’re in these situations even in our own church and there’s problems there’s issues that have to be overcome. And it seems like you know you can’t get them solved but we’ve got to what be of the tune. God is God. And don’t be afraid. Amen. John 16:33 Jesus confirms this and read letters he says these things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace in the world you will have tribulation but but be of what good cheer I have overcome the world.

▶ 41:36 Matthew 10:28 do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Amen. Sometimes we get so fixated. Fixed on this world and it’s the effects on this world and we forget that we’re all gonna die and our soul is going to live on forever. And all of our makeup and the pretty way we look in our house and our vacations and our you know pale in comparison to standing up there in heaven with Jesus Christ amen. Do not fear those who kill the body be of good cheer I have overcome the world so again he confirms it are you having a problem be of good cheer thanks God.

▶ 42:35 But remember this has to do with people that are listen you got to remember the disciples were obeying Christ right. You know if you’re if your conscience is clear if it’s not clear today you need to get it clear you need to get down you we have an advocate with the father get on your knees go to Christ get forgiveness get sin turn away from sin get on God’s road and then when you hit problems in your life and you’re obeying you’re listening to God. Be a good cheer. Do not fear. Matthew 10:31 do not fear therefore you are more of more value than many sparrows so Christ is reminding his people and us that we are. Of great value to him you got to remember that’s why he stayed on the cross.

▶ 43:31 You got to remember that he could have gotten off the cross he had legions of angels he could have never went on the cross he could have he could have just kept away from it all of his life. But he did it because you and I are of great value amen. So they got under the boat uh you know there’s I’m not going to talk about the Peter walking on going on out to Jesus on the water but when they got back into the boat the wind ceased and those who are in the boat came and worshiped him saying truly you are the son of God. And we’re reminded of the first scriptures we talked about the the wind of doctrine that is contrary the Bible says that when they went out in that boat the wind was contrary there’s doctrines in our world today that are contrary to God’s word amen whether they come from the church or for they come from the world there are doctrines that are contrary to Jesus’s words there are voices then and noise from the world and from the church that are contrary to God that are trying to tip over and destroy the boat.

▶ 44:54 And when you think about it if you’re on the ocean I don’t know if you’ve ever been on the ocean or on some body of water and there’s a storm you feel pretty small. Okay I remember going out fishing with my dad and we were on a boat and if you if you listen to this he’ll remember and the waves are just you know pounding us boom boom six foot swells and we’re on this boat that we’ve never been on before it was smaller than normal and uh we’re I was just sitting inside you know you’re just huddled in there like are we gonna are we gonna make it. And the ways the water is coming over the bow. How many know that puts you in fear you feel pretty small on the water right and the world seems really big the world seems like they have a lot of power and they have a lot of voice and that their waves are big and that they’re going to destroy but you got to remember you got to have God on the boat if God’s on the boat it’s not going to sink just like Noah’s ark when Noah’s ark uh when that water hit and that’s the the sea level rise uh I missed a nail I missed a screw it’s leak no Jesus God was on the boat that boat is not going to sink amen.

▶ 46:15 They went through a global flood and that boat stayed together now are we gonna say oh no it was a mass a masterful architect and he was the best and most perfect I mean come on there had to be some problems with the boat. I mean was there a quality control and quality terry wasn’t there to check it out. I mean it took over a hundred years to make the thing you think something’s gonna fall apart. But it did it why because God is on the boat. And when God says peace be still. He’s going to shut it all down. He’s going to stop the voices that are out there today oh my gosh we are meh the world is so full of pride right now and God we know God at the end is definitely going to do it he’s going to do it from all winds of all directions from from all over the globe.

▶ 47:25 But even in our little church God can stop the noise amen when we when we go out and do something and try to minister God can stop the noise that’s going on that the world is influencing people with God can go to the the people that we meet with and touch them and come to them and stop and still those doctrines and those noises amen. When people come in they can they that that worldly noise can be stopped. I’m just getting this right now I think that’s powerful amen. Acts chapter 27 verse 13. Paul on his journey to rome he went with prisoners the crew and the soldiers and they were driven to the island of malta. And in the storm Paul encourages and it says now I urge you to take heart there will be no loss of life among you but only the ship there stood by me this night an angel to whom I belong and whom I’ve served saying do not be afraid what is it do not be afraid.

▶ 48:33 You must be brought before caesar. And so Paul is going through a very similar situation. Thank God Paul is on the boat Paul wasn’t on the boat you see that boat would have been torn up right but Paul God had a purpose for Paul and he’s on the boat and don’t mess with God’s people Paul brought God brought Paul through that storm and the message was the same he had a word from God how many you know you need to hear God’s voice you got to know what direction we’re headed in you got to know yes I’m going to the right place. You know Paul needed some instruction should I jump off the boat should I get on this skiff should I do this you know what should I do and God says stay on the boat.

▶ 49:28 That I’m going to destroy it on this island over here amen. But God brought him through. Acts chapter 28 verse 7 Paul prayed for the father of the leading citizen and he laid his hands on him and and he was healed and father he would the the the was sick with fever and dysentery and Paul prayed for him and God healed him and when this was done the rest of those on the island who had diseases came and were healed you got to remember God used this situation to reach an island of people. To heal them and doesn’t say anything about the word you gotta hope that Paul spoke I mean it’s Paul right. And it says they honored us in many ways that these people on the island of malta were healed from their diseases because God sent someone to them so you’ve got to remember when when God brings you through something it may he’s got a purpose involved.

▶ 50:38 First kings chapter 19 verse one Jezebel threatened to kill Elijah and Elijah ran for his life he went to a cave in Horeb and he spent the night there and the word of the Lord came in and said what are you doing. What are you doing here. Amen. And he had his reply I’ve been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts the children of God of Israel have forsaken your covenant torn down your altars killed your prophets with the sword I alone am left. And they seek to take my life. So here we have a storm right Elijah has a storm the people aren’t responding to the word the people are forsaking the covenant the the people have torn down God’s altars they’ve killed the prophets.

▶ 51:36 And he’s saying I’ll on him left which is not true and then he says they seek to take my life so what is he in he’s in a storm. And God is saying what are you doing here because Elijah is kind of giving up. He’s trying he’s going to hide. And God comes to him he brings a wind he brings rocks uh he he brought a wind that tore into the mountains and broke the rocks and pieces he brought an earthquake where he was. And he brought a fire but it says the Lord was not in the fire it was not in the earthquake and not in the wind but after the fire a still small voice came.

▶ 52:30 Did the disciples hear a voice out on the water yes did Paul get uh hear a voice yes the angel came to him and gave him a word and what did this voice say he said the same thing what are you doing here. And the Lord said to him go return don’t give up. Don’t be afraid. Your life is being threatened don’t be afraid I am more powerful than they are. And I will bring you through all of this.

▶ 53:14 For 2 Timothy 3:1 says know this that in the last days perilous times will come men will be lovers of themselves of money boasters proud blasphemers disobedient to parents unthankful unholy unloving unforgiving slanders without self-control brutal despisers of good traitors headstrong lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God having a form of godliness but denying its power and from such people turn away so do we have that in our country today do we have that in our world today yes we do but the word is don’t have a form of godliness and from such people what turn away don’t uh start doing what they do don’t start oh getting on board with their ideology with their beliefs and say oh yeah that’s right that’s true no turn away.

▶ 54:16 They will progress no further in their folly will be manifest to all so you don’t want to be on that side you don’t want to be on their team 2 Timothy 3:13 but evil men and imposters will go worse and worse deceiving and being deceived. He just said that they will progress no further than he says later that evil men and imposters will grow worse and worse so people that are deceptive and deceiving are going to become worse and worse. But the people that they’re deceiving the people that are giving in there is an end to them there there’s gonna their folly is going to be manifest to all and you don’t want to be in that group and he says a very important word he says you must what you must what continue.

▶ 55:13 In the things which you have learned and been assured of see the disciples had to continue they were in the middle of that sea and they had to continue Elijah when God’s word came to him what are you doing here God is saying continue don’t stop don’t give up Paul. Continued. Keep going. Second Timothy 4:1 I charge you therefore before the Lord Jesus Christ who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom we have to remember that. When you remember that it puts things into perspective he’s going to judge people that are getting away with things right now.

▶ 56:06 God’s not going to be okay with it and if you want to join and get on their side God’s not going to be okay with it he’s going to judge the living and the dead. At his appearing when he comes back and he says I charge you preach the word convince rebuke exhort with all long-suffering and teaching. Be watchful in all things enduring endure afflictions and for you young people it says in verse 16 all scripture is given by inspiration of God it’s profitable for all doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction and righteousness that the man of God may be complete. And young people need to know that because the world is really trying to say that God’s word is a bunch of baloney.

▶ 57:01 And the word they use is a bad word. They want to say that the word of God is alive when exactly the opposite it’s exactly the opposite. Their doctrines our lives God’s word is true what does it say let God be true and every man a liar. If you want to risk your eternal life by following those doctrines. I wish you would. Stick with Christ. Stick with truth. Matthew 7:24 therefore whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them I will liken him to a wise men who built his house on the rock the rain descended the floods came the winds blew and beat on that house and it did not fall for it was what founded on the rock continue.

▶ 58:00 Don’t be afraid the wind and the waves are going to come and beat. But see this house is founded on the rock when Jesus says it is I it’s Christ you gotta stay connected to Christ Jesus and when you’re founded on the rock you’re founded on Christ you’re always with Christ. Amen. Contrary winds and waves will come in your life there’s going to be a lot of people with doctrines and beliefs and ideologies that are going to be noise. There’s going to be uh. Uh yeah okay I explained it.

▶ 58:55 What will we do when the wind and the waves come will you seek God before your storm and during your storm are we willing to have courage and face the wind and waves in our little boat. Whether you’re in a little church or a big church or a little group or small group large group whatever boat you’re in you’re still on the ocean. Okay when when the big tanker goes out there that has all the shipping containers on it it’s big but it’s really small in comparison to the ocean right. You still have to have courage. Are we willing to turn away like Paul says turn away from wickedness in our day are we willing to continue in God’s word convince rebuke exhort and preach God’s word.

▶ 59:57 God is asking us today. So right now I’d like to invite you just stand with me we’re going to just uh take some time here to pray to commit to God. To ask God to do these things in our lives. To commit ourselves. To seeking him to commit ourselves to not fear to have courage. To commit ourselves to not to turning away from the wickedness. Amen. So I’d invite you to stand with me. Their heads down our eyes closed right now we’re gonna take time to call on Jesus in our boat to wake him up in our lives take a few minutes to say God Lord I need you Lord I need you to help me grow I need you to help Lord Jesus I need your life in me your word your truth your power all this stuff all the things that you give God I need you so right now we’re going to pray that God would do our work in us invite him to do something in you let’s lift up our voices Jesus we coming for you this morning God Lord we call on the king of kings the Lord of lords the great I am Jesus Lord God.
