One Reason There is Suffering in the Earth Part 1: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
One reason for suffering is national sin: God warns and relents when nations turn. Daniel read Jeremiah, understood the 70 years and prayed, confessing his people’s sins. Correction should lead to repentance and forgiveness.
Why the suffering?
Short answer: Israel was in captivity about 70 years—God warns nations and relents if they turn.
▶ 0:00 Okay, in Daniel chapter 9, we understand now that Israel has been in captivity for almost 70 years. They’re being punished for violating God’s laws. And in this chapter, we’re going to understand that one of the reasons there is suffering in the earth. See, the atheist, the humanist are always saying, “Well, God is a good God. Why is he allowing suffering in the earth?” Well, you know, quit blaming God. Here’s one of the reasons there is suffering in the earth. Of course, others is just natural things. Others is your decision. You know, you make a decision to jump off the Empire State Building. I mean, come on. You’re going to reap the rewards of that decision. And uh then you got evil people that want what you have and will do harm to get it.
▶ 0:53 But, this is one of the reasons for suffering in the earth. In Jeremiah 18:7-10, “When I speak concerning a nation to destroy it, if that nation turns from its evil, I will relent or repent from the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. And the moment I speak concerning a nation to build and to plant it, if it does evil in my sight and does not obey my voice, then I will relent or repent from the good which I said I would benefit it.” Now, in Hebrews 12, 6 through 10, we learn that God disciplines, chastens people. “Whom the Lord loves, he’s chastened.” Does the Lord love you? Yeah, okay. Do you want the Lord to love you?
▶ 1:44 Okay, get ready for the switch. The paddle. Get ready for some discipline because he love He’s not like parents today who think they can just you know, befriend their kids and and they turn out good. Discipline has to be that. He loves, he chastens, he corrects, he scourges, disciplines every son whom he receives. This is what Jesus did. He got He grabbed the scourge and went into the temple and drove the money changers out. See, he was correcting them. Don’t you make my house a house of merchandise. You do your business outside the house of God. And uh he was disciplining them. For earthly fathers, for a few days correct us, discipline us after their own pleasure. They don’t They want to watch money, not football, and they want you to be quiet.
▶ 2:41 But he, for our prophet, that we might be partakers of his holiness. I call this the God factor. See, our enemies and even the church, even Christians, are forgetting about the God factor. We can make all the plans we want, we can make all the promises we want, we can talk as positive as we want from our mouth, but we got to remember when the God factor comes in, you’re going to get corrected. I don’t care how much you name it and claim it, believe it or not, God, because he loves you, will correct you. And don’t think that a military strength, positive confession, possibility thinking, science achievements, technology achievements, religion, can save you when and you’re especially your own opinions, when God decides to bring desolation, punishment, and correction upon an individual, a family, or a nation, or even a church.
Scripture in this part
Jeremiah 18:7-10 (NKJV)
The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it.
— Jeremiah 18:7-10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:53What should correction bring?
Short answer: Repentance—Daniel kept the book in his mind and understood the 70 years.
▶ 3:54 Correction but should bring us to repentance because repentance is the only thing that’s going to save us. Not grace and faith. Luke 13:3, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish. Is that what the scripture say? Yes, that’s what the scripture say. It doesn’t say except you believe you shall all likewise perish. We got to repent. We got to turn from our errors and keep turning. In Revelations 2:22, the church of Thyatira, I said, I will cast them and the church that commit adultery with this false prophetess into great tribulation and except they repent of their deeds, I will bring them to destruction.
▶ 5:00 You want to join false prophets, you’re going to join their correction. Now, remember the most high rules in the kingdoms of men. Don’t you think Obama’s the head of this nation for 1 minute or the Congress. They are just delegated leaders. Jesus is the one that’s going to decide where this nation stands in 2016. He’s the one deciding it and you have the privilege of turning his heart. Are you there? You have the responsibility of turning his heart to bless and do good to this nation. Now, let’s go to chapter 9.
▶ 5:52 And Daniel is going to pray after he understands the 70-year period of Jeremiah. He’s going to pray after understanding. A lot of us don’t know how to pray because we don’t first get understanding. So, we just ramble uh now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep a fashion that before I wake up pray the Lord my soul to take a blah blah blah blah blah. We got our own little rendition, but it’s repeated every night. Why? Because we don’t have understanding. We’re not moved to pray. And how did he get this understanding? How did Daniel come across this understanding? He said in verses 2 through 3, I understood by the books, by the scrolls, by the scriptures. Daniel was in the book. Daniel studied the Bible. Daniel read the Bible.
▶ 6:44 That was part of his daily walk is putting that book in his mind. And sure enough, after years of not understanding what Jeremiah was talking about, bam! Today, he read it and God opened his understanding. Hallelujah. See, he didn’t understand it when he first came into the captivity. It doesn’t say he does, does it? He didn’t understand it later when he got all these great visions of the four kingdoms and everything else. He didn’t understand. But when God’s timing came, God opened his understanding because he had understanding of the book. He was reading it and God made it real to him. How many of you’ve ever experienced that? I’ve experienced it over and over. People say, “How do you know the Bible like you do?” Because I read it, I study it all the time.
▶ 7:39 Most of the time when I’m watching TV with my wife, my mind is on scripture. You say that just can’t be. Yeah, it is. What does Psalm 1 tell us? And in his word he doth meditate day and night. See, when I prayed for the last 40 years, I prayed over scripture. I didn’t pray over a petition that I want God to do. I needed to understand things. I’m just giving you my testimony. And folks, we can all know the scriptures. We need to get understanding of the scriptures, but most Christians never even read the book.
▶ 8:34 They’ll go to the Christian bookstore and buy all kinds of books and read them, but not they book. Am I right? And I would say 85% of us in here are guilty of that. We do not feed ourselves every day. And we do not have a study time. Reading is your feed time. Study is your getting understanding time of things you don’t quite get yet. How many know you people in college have got to set aside a time for study? Yes. How many are glad the doctor studied before they cut on you? Yeah. But oh, we want to go out and reach the world when we haven’t put any time into God. You think this call to help Elsinore is going to do anything until you get moved to get into the word and let the word move you and give you something to say.
▶ 9:36 Could that be an amen? Now, so he understood the number of years. The 70 years in the desolation of Jerusalem, destruction, ruin. And then he set his face to seek the Lord God by prayer and supplication. Supplication is petitioning. He’s going to petition God. He’s going to come to God with specific things that he wants done. That’s what supplication is. Prayer is just talking to God and asking him. You know, all I ever hear in the church is, “Lord, help me. Lord, help me.” I think, “Man, is that the only prayer? Lord, help me.” Does he ever throw out the lifeline and you actually grab a hold of it and he pulls you into the boat? Or you still out there saying, “Lord, help me.” You got it, didn’t you?
▶ 10:30 Yeah. We think we’re so spiritual when we say, “Lord, help me.” You need to grab a hold of what he throws out when you cry. You need to get back into the boat. Amen. Geez, we think we’re so spiritual when we do these childish things. And we need to grow up, become mature. Could that be an amen? Lord, help us. How many of you know Daniel didn’t say, “Lord, help me.” He got into the buck. He got into prayer. He prayed three times a day. This guy had his act together and we know from our previous lessons that he was well learned in natural life and the sciences. You know, he he had a good mind.
▶ 11:22 He went to school. Even when Jerusalem was surrounded by armies, he had every excuse to stop learning. HE KEPT LEARNING. SO he was skillful in natural things and he was skillful in spiritual things. Can I hear an amen? Now, we know that the Old Testament scripture tells us that Moses told Israel that they would sin through God. He told Israel they would sin and go into captivity. We know that the prophets, Isaiah and those prophets told them that they would go in to captivity for their immorality. In the New Testament, Jesus told them they were going to go into a second captivity, a second desolation. And they did in 70 AD.
Scripture in this part
Daniel 9:2 (NKJV)
in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
— Daniel 9:2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:44Jeremiah 25:11 (NKJV)
And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
— Jeremiah 25:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 9:36How many captivities?
Short answer: Two—the land desolate twice; what will you do in the day of visitation?
▶ 12:15 They went into captivity twice. They were the land was desolate twice. The temple, Jerusalem because of immorality. Not because of the baptism of the Holy Ghost, not because of grace and faith. It was Bible morality. Say it, Bible morality. They’ve got us scared to death to preach Bible morality. We’ll preach the second coming, we’ll preach positive thinking, we’ll preach prosperity, we’ll preach possibility thinking, we’ll make you feel good about yourself, we’ll give motivational preaching and all the rest, but we refuse to constantly hit the people with Bible morality and Bible morality is what’s going to save us from the correction. Now, that was a good statement. Bible morality is compassionate behavior.
▶ 13:12 See, when he began to understand he was moved with compassion to do something about it. See, when I believe in Bible morality, I will behave in myself a way where I care for people. See, why do I tell homosexuals they are liars? Because they are liars. They say they were born that way and that’s not true. They made a choice. They say that animals commit homosexual acts. That’s not true. I went on their website for the proof and it’s ridiculous. There’s no animals having sexual homosexual acts. None. They’re lying through their teeth. And see, unless I tell them what is wrong, how they going to turn from it?
▶ 14:05 Are you there? I tell them they’re liars, they’re bashers, and they’re criminals. When you commit homosexuality, you’re committing a criminal act. A criminal violates laws. And in this case, they’re violating natural and biblical moral laws. And that’s why I’ve led 53 homosexuals to Christ. I tell them their situation. This is your situation. This is who you are. But Jesus can change that. Hallelujah. How many homosexuals have you led to Christ? Have you even tried to witness to one? I take them on. I took on the mayor of San Francisco a few years back.
▶ 15:02 Trying to make those marriages without a law. Me and him went face-to-face. He didn’t listen. They don’t want to listen. But you got to tell them the truth. Can I hear an amen? Jeremiah 25:11 through 12, “The whole land shall be desolate.” Not just the temple, not just Jerusalem, the whole land is going to be ruined, destroyed. And in astonishment, and these nations, other nations are going to serve the king of Babylon 70 years. Isaiah tells us that Tyre was going to serve the kingdom of Babylon 70 years. It wasn’t just Israel that was sinning. God used Babylon just to get about 10 of them all at one time, bound. After 70 years, I will punish the king of Babylon. And that whole nation for their iniquity and will make it perpetual desolations. Now, God uses sinners to correct sinners or criminals to correct criminals.
▶ 15:58 And then he corrects the criminal that he used to correct the criminal the criminal. You got that? So, don’t get haughty when you’re on God’s side of giving out correction because if you don’t live more Bible morality, yours is next. Now, Isaiah spoke of the desolations, the punishments and corrections for making moral immoral laws. Did you hear my statement? Isaiah clarifies this even more why they went in to desolation 70 years. And he brings out this fact that they made immoral laws. Woe to them that decree unrighteous decrees and that write grievousness or moral worthlessness. How many of a lot of laws in America are morally worthless?
▶ 16:52 In fact, they’re immoral. And see, Isaiah through God saw this. He said they prescribed these laws. They make their own standard of what’s right and wrong and they’re morally worthless. He says, “They turn aside the needy from judgment.” To take away the right from the poor of my people. What does the poor need more than moral teaching? Because it is righteousness that what? Exalts a people. And when you feed the poor with food and clothing and don’t teach them moral standards, you are robbing them of the future that they can have by following right principles.
▶ 17:46 He says, “You or what you What will you do, rather? What will you do in the day of visitation and then the what? Desolation which shall come? You think these laws are going to keep God from correcting, punishing, and bringing destruction in your life? And then they want to blame God when bad things happen in the earth. And we make laws. We’re the source of the problem. But we want to pass it on. And make God look like a a bad guy. Isn’t that powerful? And what has America done, by the way? Have we made laws that are immoral? Absolutely.
▶ 18:37 Do we have laws that are worthless when it comes to morality? Yes. And God’s people are sitting by quiet. Just Jeremiah 29:10. More of Jeremiah on this captivity, this abomination of desolation. After 70 years, I will visit you. Hallelujah. How many are glad there’s just a time period for discipline? How many wish that yours would get over quicker quicker than it is? Uh Yes. I will cause you to return to this place. I’m going to come. And I’m going to put a repentive heart in you. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you of peace, not evil, to give you an expected end. Prosperous end, profitable end.
▶ 19:28 And then you will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart. That was what that prophecy was all about this morning. It’s the heart that God responds to. And I will be found of you and gather you from all the nations where I’ve been driven you. So, his end purpose is not to just discipline you for the rest of your life, is it? But to what? Bring you back to righteousness, bring you back to Bible morality. Bring you back to repentance. Bible morality is the wise choice. Why? Because even if I mess up, God will only bring things in my life to bless me in the end. See, Bible morality is the wise choice. Yes, I may have to go through some difficult things so I learn my lesson, but I know the end result is he’s going to come and visit me.
Scripture in this part
Isaiah 10:3 (NKJV)
What will you do in the day of punishment, And in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your glory?
— Isaiah 10:3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 17:46How did Daniel pray?
Short answer: Confessing the nation’s sins—forgive, lying, dishonoring parents; God will restore.
▶ 20:31 He’s going to turn to me. He’s going to restore me. Let’s take a look at Daniel’s prayer. He hears his cry, “Lord, we’ve sinned.” How many of you notice he brought himself in the picture? Yeah, even as good as Daniel was, how many come close to Daniel’s character? You’re wise. We showed you Daniel’s character the first chapter. Let me tell you. He’s good. He’s very good. I don’t even come close. And yet he said we’ve what? Sinned. Do you do that? Lord, these homosexuals are sinning and and Lord, I got my own sin. Or Lord, these prostitutes is just horrible what they’re doing, these young prostitutes.
▶ 21:27 Just But I got my own sin also, Lord. We was included. How many of you know that’s a humble approach? Because we may have sin that is what? Hidden. How many of you know in the Bible there’s a hidden sin? It means you don’t see it. How many of you know you can have a sin in your life breaking a law of God that you haven’t saw yet? Yeah. So don’t get cocky. Stay humble. Is that Isn’t that good? Yeah. We sinned. We’ve rebelled. The Bible says in 1 Samuel 15:23, rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. Rebellion’s a You know, you’re unmanageable. You you you turn against what’s right. We’ve rebelled from your laws. We’ve turned from your laws. And again, he said we. And we’ve turned from your judgments.
▶ 22:20 How many of you know America can’t judge criminals anymore? You know, they get a little slap on the hand and they go back and rape another kid. And so judgment’s important. The laws are important. And then he says, “As it is written.” Then he brings out Moses and the prophets. All this evil, all this desolation, all this curse has come upon us. You wrote it. We violated it and you brought it to pass. Then he says, “I confess. I admit we are wrong. I asked you to forgive. I ask you to hear. Listen to my prayer and forgive. Render our sins zero.
▶ 23:13 You see, when you forgiving someone, when they walk through the door, you have no ill feelings against them. Now, remember, Israel violated every word, every commandment of God. The spiritual laws, they committed idolatry, which we just read as stubbornness and greed. In the New Testament, it’s greed. Robbery, they didn’t pay tithes and offerings. God says that’s robbery, spiritual robbery. And a lot of Christians don’t give tithes, and so we have less money to reach out to people because there are spiritual robbers. Just let that one sink in. And that’s the scriptures, you know, don’t sugarcoat it, don’t whitewash it. That’s the scriptures.
▶ 24:05 You’ve robbed me in tithes and offerings, Malachi said. And so they break all these things. They uh cursed God. They violated the seventh day, don’t set it apart. They neglect God’s house. They don’t seek God. And they’re supposed to be an influence to the nations and they weren’t an influence to the nations. They also violated civil laws. They and that just in the story of Nabal. Nabal was an innocent guy, they wanted his vineyard, covetousness. They got false witnesses to say he was a bad guy. Another commandment, false witness, lied. They murdered him and then went and took his vineyard.
▶ 24:58 How many of you know in the Old Testament when you die, where does your property go? To the next relative. So, even though they killed him, they did not have a right to take his vineyard because his property legally was to go where? To the next of kin, the wife, the child, the brother, the sister. Just throwing stuff out to you. Now, treachery, David and Uriah. Treachery is when you befriend someone to betray them. And that’s exactly what David did. Treachery is a horrible sin in God. Malachi also deals with that. Sexual immorality, David did it.
▶ 25:52 Lied. Uh dishonoring good parents. Kings rejected good parents and went their own way, neglected to train up their children in scriptural morals. They made their own moral laws. As Isaiah said, and in the New Testament, the Jews said, “You don’t have to honor your parents if you give contributions to the temple.” They made their own law. And what are we doing in America? Making our own laws. What are we doing in the church world? Making our own laws. You can’t make your own laws, church. Just because you feel something is right doesn’t make it right. And just because someone agrees with you that it’s right doesn’t make it right. It’s what God in the scripture says is right. That’s our standard of right.
▶ 26:45 Now, if Israel did that and God disciplined for it, let’s look at America. Could it be that America has got some problems that are going to bring us into desolation? Homosexual marriage. There’s not a nation in history that promoted homosexual marriage. They’re lying to you when they say that. Yes, the Greeks and them, they committed homosexual acts, but you don’t find in history hardly any nation embracing, promoting homosexual lifestyle, let alone homosexual marriage. This is a greater crime than Israel did. Israel didn’t do this crime. They didn’t make a law approving of homosexual marriage. But all today, and we call ourselves Christian. Obama calls himself a Christian.
▶ 27:38 You know, Romney calls himself a Christian. Everybody calls himself a Christian. And yet, they will make a law. Why do I have Anthony Perkins on the screen? Because these homosexuals say they can’t change, they were born that way. Well, Anthony Perkins was a homosexual until about 40 years old. Then he met this woman, and he got married, had two children, and said by his own mouth in his later years that I have been faithful to my wife. He raised those kids. He stayed faithful to his wife. And yes, he did get AIDS, and he died from it. One of the first ones that died from AIDS. But folks, he changed. Are you there? Same way with Angelina Jolie. She was a lesbian in her early teens, early teens and early 20s.
Scripture in this part
Daniel 9:3-11 (NKJV)
Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. And I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession, and said, “O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land. O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You. “O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him. We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him.
— Daniel 9:3-11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 20:31What modern examples?
Short answer: Celebrity culture and a slow, agonizing death no one should call okay.
▶ 28:34 But now she’s chasing Brad Pitt like no, you know, ain’t no tomorrow. Are you there? And I’ve heard people say, you know, I tried it, and that was dumb. I am not a lesbian. I’m not a homosexual. I am straight.” And why did they try it? Because all the advertisement and promotion of homosexual lifestyle. And a lot of these people that are doing it without God, they’re just coming to the natural senses that this is stupid. Homosexuals have the highest rate of AIDS and syphilis. AIDS kills 1.8 million each year worldwide, 18,000 per year in the USA, and 630,000 since it began.
▶ 29:27 1 million HIV cases are in the USA, 43,000 new cases every year. Over 4,000 children have AIDS. And this comes from the US Center for Disease and Control. Among males, male-to-male sexual contact is 74% source of the males that get AIDS, followed by heterosexual, which is bisexual. They’re going crossing over. So, homosexuals are still the source of that figure. Okay, and that figure is 14%, and then injecting drug use, where they have the contaminated needles, which the source again comes from homosexuals, or those in contact with them.
▶ 30:23 So, you have 96% of people that get AIDS, males, 96% of males. And they have that little variation, it could be 100%. But let’s just say 96%. How many of you know, if everybody turned a whole into a homosexual, every man turned into a homosexual in America, all of a sudden, we just got nothing but women running around. Now, natural understanding says that’s what? Stupid. Say it. My natural mind as uh ex-president Bill Clinton says, “Do the arithmetic.” You’re going to destroy a nation if you continue that way. Isn’t that right? And why would anybody sentence people to this kind of death?
▶ 31:23 Slow, horrible, agonizing death. Why would anybody intelligently say that’s okay to do something that’s going to kill you? Obama makes no sense. He’s the one that said it. I’m not afraid to use his name. He’s the one that said it. They deserve to do what they do. They deserve to be treated right. They’re going to destroy our nation and they deserve to be treated right? Syphilis, see that picture with syphilis? It’s rampant. There’s strains of it that they can’t cure now. They’re having a hard time. It’s fighting off the antibiotics. Not a magical cure anymore.
