Live Like the Remnant 10/20/2019: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
A message on the remnant God reserves for Himself. Elijah, Caleb, Moses and young Samuel stood for God’s word when the majority, kings and even priests went wrong. Eli failed to restrain his sons. The remnant doesn’t compromise, doesn’t quit, and is stubborn for God rather than against Him.
What is the remnant?
Short answer: The leftover part. Elijah thought he was alone, but God had reserved seven thousand who had not bowed the knee to Baal.
▶ 0:00 And the remnant as you know is the the leftover part Romans chapter 11 verse 2 through 5 Elijah comes to God and he says God it says in Romans you know Romans is is helping you understand what’s going on okay and Paul is the writer of Romans and he’s saying Elijah was pleading with God against Israel he was coming forgotten saying God get rid of these people get rid of this nation they are so evil you know and you have a very different.
▶ 0:43 Method method with Moses it was very opposite you know God came to Moses he’s out I’m gonna wipe these guys from the face the other I’m gonna if you got you guys remember that in the wilderness right where God’s threatening to just take him out and Moses is saying no to God don’t do that you know plea and he goes to bat for him and he stands in the gap for for the people of Israel so you have Moses on one side he’s interceding and you got Elijah on the other side just saying get rid of these guys and both of those guys were on the mount of transfiguration but this is God’s answer he says Lord they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars and I’ll own them left and they seek my life basically saying these guys are really being awful and when you look at the American church you can just say you know we got a lot of problems going on we’re promoting a lot of sin I mean somebody could make the case the Devil I’m sure he’s making his case right now against the church right in America you know God look at this you see this you see what’s happening what’s going on in Romans God’s answer to this accusation from Elijah is he says I have reserved for myself 7,000 men and women.
Scripture in this part
Romans 11:2-5 (NKJV)
God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, “LORD, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life”? But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
— Romans 11:2-5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:001 Kings 19:18 (NKJV)
Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
— 1 Kings 19:18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 2:04Is God still reserving people?
Short answer: Yes. In spite of all our junk, He is reserving people for Himself, and there’s a remnant in America.
▶ 2:05 That have not bowed the knee to bill you know praise God that a few things I want to say here praise God that he. In spite of all of our junk he is reserving people for himself and he’s not willing to just throw us out he wants to preserve his church his people as bad as they get you know sodom and gomorrah it got really bad there were what how many four that he was willing to say what we’re talking about 7000 have not bowed the knee to bail. And. The question that God is asking me is are we part of that remnant are we being that church and you got move moves of God going on and on the other parts of the world and God’s moving and these people are seeking God and and you know America right here in lake elsinore are we being that church that is the remnant is.
Should we conform to a successful church model?
Short answer: No. In America there’s a certain way to be a successful church, but what matters is following what is right.
▶ 3:13 It our desire to conform to the message that is successful you know you can in America if you want to be a successful church you got to do things a certain way right now now you could go for that route or we can continue. Staying. Or conform to the message of God’s word is. The group right because it has numbers is the group right because it has numbers where the you know you have a whole nation of Israel that is going the wrong way and only 7000 have not bowed the knee to bill were they right because they had the majority no. Just because you’re the majority doesn’t mean anything is our group right because the state leader religious leader or government leader says so no.
▶ 4:08 No it’s not. And he says even so then at this present time there is a remnant and praise God in America there’s a remnant right and we want to be part of that run I want to be part of that run that says no I will not capitulate no I will not bow my knee no I will stand against you. God’s word is higher than your word. Whether it’s the government whether it’s somebody forcing us to. Do their version of christianity know I have convictions we have convictions we have the word that we are trying to follow with all of our heart mind soul and understanding Elijah.
What happened on Mount Carmel?
Short answer: Elijah had Ahab gather Israel and the 450 prophets of Baal; God is always right.
▶ 5:00 He get he called Ahab to gather all of Israel he said gather all of Israel gathered 450 prophets of Baal and the king was there so Ahab he had he was in charge he was the government leader he had the prophets so the church leaders at that time and then he had the people and he was going against all three of those groups and all three of those groups were wrong so. Just because you have numbers just because you have the leader just because you have the church leaders it doesn’t matter Abraham Lincoln I heard this recently and I thought it was really good my concern is not whether God is on our side my greatest concern is to be on God’s side and then you can take that for whatever you know I want God to be on my side you know it’s several times in the scriptures Joseph all these guys that said the Lord was with him I want God with me and yes I want to be on his side.
▶ 6:08 For God this was a very important for God is always right and that is the problem that everybody in this planet has to deal with whether you’re poor or rich whether you’re from America or another world are you following what God says to do I don’t care if you know your born in all these circumstances and situations. What is truth you’ve got to follow truth. And. The remnant the remnant care about the truth above everything else and that’s the summary of how you live like the remnant you follow the truth above everything else.
Scripture in this part
1 Kings 18:19-20 (NKJV)
Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel.
— 1 Kings 18:19-20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 5:00Who did Ahab blame?
Short answer: He called Elijah the troubler of Israel, but the trouble came from forsaking God’s commandments and following the Baals.
▶ 7:04 Abraham Lincoln he summed it up right he said God is always right. So. Ahab he accused 1 Kings 18 verse 17 Ahab saw Elijah and said is that you O troubler of Israel a have saw Elijah okay you got this right a hat a hat. The bad guy he sees Elijah and he’s calling him a trouble of Israel I mean what a joke I mean you look at the you read about the kings of Judah and the kings of Israel and you know all the kings of Israel were just bad mostly and he’s here accusing Elijah. And he answered I have not troubled Israel but you and your father’s house have and that you have forsaken turned your back on the commandments the truth.
▶ 8:10 God’s word and have followed the Baal. So here we have Ahab he’s falsely accusing Elijah and he’s convincing all of Israel that it’s it’s not marvel. Whose fault is it it’s their fault because they’re not following the commandments simple. Hey have not taking responsibility for his behavior not taking responsibility for his position as king he was supposed to follow God follow God’s word follow the law. It doesn’t matter if you’re one man or a million the question is are you following God’s truth.
▶ 9:05 It doesn’t matter if you have a million members in your church. That matters is are you following what is right Moses was given a word from God right we know several times God came to Moses and he was speaking directly to Moses speaking to him audibly no. Intermediary right direct word Exodus 33 the Lord said to Moses leave go up to the land I promised and I will send an angel before you and drive out the canaanites amirite hittites perizzites perizzites hivites and jebbie signs. Okay we know and the other scriptures that it was time for them to be judged. Right.
Scripture in this part
1 Kings 18:17-18 (NKJV)
Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?” And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.
— 1 Kings 18:17-18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:04How was Caleb the remnant?
Short answer: One of twelve spies, he stood up for God’s word against the bad report; God said he followed Me wholeheartedly.
▶ 10:00 So this is the promise they’re gonna go up and inherit the land and he said that several times even to Abraham so. They get there and they send their spies or they send a person from each tribe into the land of Canaan to check it out to spy it out they came back and they spread among the Israelites a bad report they spread a bad report about the land they had explored so here God had set up this great place for them to inherit had this great stuff for them to have and God is going to help them get into it and they come back and they say oh there’s giants we can’t overcome it’s a nice place but we.
▶ 10:55 Just can’t do it and they spread that message I can’t. They spread a bad report. But. Here is the remnant Caleb he is 1 out of 12 messengers 1 out of 12 spies and he’s he says what are you thinking no. Numbers 13:30 the Caleb silence of people before Moses we should go up and take possession of the land first we can certainly do it the Bible says he had a different spirit a different spirit I. Want to have that spirit of the remnant that says no.
▶ 11:47 It says no I’m gonna stand up for God’s word I’m gonna stand up for his commandments his truth and God said this about Caleb he follows me wholeheartedly I want to follow God wholeheartedly we need to follow God wholeheartedly I will bring him into the land he went to and as the sentence will inherit it do you see. Do you see the blessing here. Why it’s so imperative. In my heart conviction conviction comes no I don’t want to go against what I know is right because I know there is a blessing I know it is truth I will bring him into the land and his descendants will inherit it I want my children to have that spirit of God to have God influencing moving in their lives blessing them.
Scripture in this part
Numbers 13:30-31 (NKJV)
Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.”
— Numbers 13:30-31 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 10:55Numbers 14:24 (NKJV)
But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.
— Numbers 14:24 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:47Is the majority always right?
Short answer: No. Israel was the majority and the ten spies were wrong; we ought to live like the remnant.
▶ 12:58 We got to behave like that we ought to live like the remnant so the majority we have here was Israel they were the majority were they right no were the 11 spy right no they were wrong. What did the remnant do Caleb he spoke up he spoke out against it and God blessed him for you know Caleb had to go back and wait 40 years. Before he would could go back into the land right. He had to wait. That’s not always fun having to wait. The remnant listens to God above people the remnant listens to God Moses in Egypt and this scripture is the one that pricked my heart at the beginning of all this Exodus 8 verse 25 then Pharaoh said go sacrifice to your God in the land.
Did Moses compromise with Pharaoh?
Short answer: No. Pharaoh offered compromises, but Moses did what God said.
▶ 14:06 Now if you don’t remember Moses came to Pharaoh and he says Pharaoh God wants us to go and sacrifice in the wilderness ok so after a few plagues went by ok I’m not sure how many had gone by at this time but after a few had gone by Pharaoh says ok let’s compromise. Let’s compromise. You go sacrifice in the land. Stay here and do it but you see Moses had a direct word from God he had truth you can’t we can’t compromise on truth you know you can compromise on preferences like I want to wear a blue shirt or red shirt you know ok ok I’ll do yeah but truth that’s that’s a big problem.
▶ 15:05 Moses comes to when God comes to Moses and says this is what I want you to do he’s got to do it and later in this scripture Moses actually says you know if we do that your people the Egyptians are going to stone us because they they think that’s a bad thing to sacrifice animals that’s what he said so either farah was trying to get him in trouble with the people of Egypt or Moses was just like trying to you know excuse himself out of it who knows Moses knew what truth was and he was following it right amen. The remanence response he says we will go three days journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord as God has commanded us I’m gonna listen to God’s command above.
Scripture in this part
Exodus 8:25-28 (NKJV)
Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God in the land.” And Moses said, “It is not right to do so, for we would be sacrificing the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God. If we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, then will they not stone us? We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He will command us.” So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Intercede for me.”
— Exodus 8:25-28 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 14:06Exodus 10:24-26 (NKJV)
Then Pharaoh called to Moses and said, “Go, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be kept back. Let your little ones also go with you.” But Moses said, “You must also give us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. Our livestock also shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind. For we must take some of them to serve the LORD our God, and even we do not know with what we must serve the LORD until we arrive there.”
— Exodus 10:24-26 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 15:05Who was the remnant in Egypt?
Short answer: Israel, whose cry came before the Lord.
▶ 16:01 Your compromise I’m sorry Pharaoh. I’m sorry. And Israel here is the remnant because they’re the ones crying out the Bible says that their cry came before the Lord they were being persecuted they were being enslaved they’re being mistreated all this stuff going on there the remnant here in this case and Moses’s got the direct word from God Eli. First Samuel verse 212 Eli’s sons or wicked men they did not know the Lord now it’s nice when the Bible sums it up right it says they were wicked men. You know when you’re living here in 2019 you don’t have something to show that person you’re a wicked person you know you don’t know what people have done you don’t know all this stuff you say hello there quaint but the Bible just sums it up and says you’re wicked so you look at that you say it’s easy yeah hophni and phinehas you guys are awaking what are you doing but living in 2019 it’s harder to make some decisions because you don’t have a label on everybody wicked.
Scripture in this part
Exodus 3:7 (NKJV)
And the LORD said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.
— Exodus 3:7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 16:01What was wrong with Eli’s sons?
Short answer: They were wicked men who did not know the Lord, completely rebelling against God’s word, and Eli did not restrain them.
▶ 17:25 So what do you look at we know to look at some but the fruit of their life is their fruit bad or is it good simple. Eli’s sons were wicked men they did not know the Lord and they were priests. They did not know the Lord the Bible says that they just. Completely disgraced the sacrifice of God you know you know maybe that maybe that doesn’t even sound like a big thing you know some an atheist or a person that doesn’t believe in God you know what’s the big deal what’s the big deal of how the the pattern they didn’t follow this or they didn’t follow that they didn’t it’s not a big deal you. Know Adam and Eve Eve just she just ate the fruit she just pulled the fruit off and she took a bite what’s the big deal.
▶ 18:24 It’s not what she killed anybody. The problem is you have God’s word and you are completely rebelling against what he said to do. That’s a problem Eli addressed his sons and he starts telling them why are you doing this and why kids sons why are you you know disgracing God sacrificed why are you doing but he just let them keep doing it the Bible says 1st Samuel to verse 29 why do you honor your son’s above me this is God talking to Samuel why do you honor your sons above me you see sorry talking to Eli Eli. This is a hard situation he’s got to deal with his kids you know you never want to deal with that but this is God’s house you have a conflict of truth here and you can’t compromise truth you know yeah he had a conversation with his sons but he never addressed the problem things have to be addressed.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 2:12 (NKJV)
Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the LORD.
— 1 Samuel 2:12 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 17:251 Samuel 3:13 (NKJV)
For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.
— 1 Samuel 3:13 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 19:40Should leaders address wrong in church?
Short answer: Yes. We can’t just let things go.
▶ 19:41 You know [name] wants to come up and start singing to the Devil we got to address it right [name]. We can’t just let things go. They were threatening people because they wanted a certain piece of the animal when it came in they’re threatening him give it to us or we’ll take it by force these sons you know they were just using God’s house as a means to just run people over that’s not right. Using their position to push people around that’s not right so God comes to the remnant who’s the remnant here little boy Samuel and God’s waking him up and you remember that story comes to Eli he what did you say yes master.
How did Samuel respond?
Short answer: He told Eli everything God said, then opened the doors of the house of the Lord the next day; he didn’t quit, and the Lord was with him.
▶ 20:39 So finally he wakes up any and God’s speaking to him and you know he told God tells him that he’s gonna judge Eli’s house and Samuel was afraid you know whatever stage you’re at. It’s it’s it’s hard sometimes to deal with truth. Samuel didn’t want to tell Eli completely understandable you know God’s telling Samuel he’s a boy and I’m gonna I’m gonna judge he like in sam was like. You want me to tell. You want me to tell this to Eli so he like comes to him the next day he said tell me what God told you and do not lie to me and then Samuel told him everything you know I’m sure he was scared to tell him but he told them and Eli.
▶ 21:36 Said whatever that’s what God wants. He’s God says the next day Samuel got up and opened the doors of the house of the Lord if Samuel didn’t quit he didn’t stop what he was doing he kept working in God’s house. You know he had to deal with this message that he got he had to deal with Eli he didn’t quit he didn’t run I. Thought it was very powerful as a young boy to have that conviction in his heart or or maybe you know threatened by his mother who knows. And the Bible says the Lord was with him so here we go again the remnant is listening to God’s word above the people that are doing what is wrong Eli and the brothers three against one and here.
▶ 22:42 We go again the Lord was with him so Samuel is this one he is the remnant and he is listening to God again we see the blessings here of being the remnant I don’t want to give that up I. Want God with me when I stand before God I’m going to stand before him face to face michael mano-a-mano it’s cristina’s not gonna be there my mom’s not gonna be there my dad’s not gonna be there. It’s gonna be me and him. And I’m gonna have to tell him why I gave up all these. Blessings that I knew the Lord was with him the Lord revealed himself to Samuel I.
▶ 23:40 Want God to reveal himself to me. You know but it happened over time Samuel he grew and he became one of the greatest prophets we know of in the Old Testament Samuel. Excellent prophet I mean he could just spout off some kind of prophecy you know talking to Saul you guys remember that oh the donkeys over there in this land boom. You know he had it he. Knew God and I want that I want God with me I want him to reveal himself to me. Because when I stand before him I’m gonna have to tell him why other things were more important than he was and I’m not gonna tell that to him.
▶ 24:32 And we don’t want to tell that to him right whit not just me I sit here right. If he had quit what do you think what would happen see if Samuel would have went home said I don’t want to deal with this if Samuel had stopped if stanley had to run home to his mommy what do you think would have happened. Would the Lord be with him what God continued reveal himself to him I don’t know I don’t think so he’s God harsh I wanted to point this out. Very important God judged the Israelites as you know they had to spend 40 years in the wilderness and that generation all died I mean and other judgments that him did but you got to remember he also showed the Israelites protected them while they were in Egypt when the plagues came he brought them through the red sea they saw all that the cloud of his presence went before the whole nation of Israel that came out of Egypt they saw all this stuff and more and they.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 3:15-19 (NKJV)
So Samuel lay down until morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision. Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He answered, “Here I am.” And he said, “What is the word that the LORD spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that He said to you.” Then Samuel told him everything, and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the LORD. Let Him do what seems good to Him.” So Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.
— 1 Samuel 3:15-19 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 21:36What does stubbornness look like?
Short answer: Pharaoh still defied God through ten plagues; Israel was stiff-necked. Be stubborn for God, not against Him.
▶ 25:48 Still defied. God they still would not listen Pharaoh. Do you remember which plague was the firstborn son do you remember which number the tenth the last one did Pharaoh have to lose his son no he could have listened he could have listened that the first one or not even had the first one Moses came and said let my people go okay. But no what was the problem with Pharaoh we we know this this is this is very plain what was the problem with Pharaoh he had a what hard heart. Remnant we can’t have a hard heart. What was the problem with the Israelites.
▶ 26:45 What what word did God use for the Israelites he said they are a stiff neck stubborn people. Now I want to be stiff neck and stubborn for God but not against God I. Don’t want to have I want to have a hard heart for sin and unrighteousness and Satan in the kingdom of darkness but not for God. Amen. Eli. He was warned by a man of God and by Samuel that this would happen God was warning Eli what would happen and Eli lost his two sons and he lost his own life because he did not address the issue God was patient merciful their reputation grew so bad everyone knew that they were wicked.
▶ 27:41 His sons made themselves vile it says in 1st Samuel and he did not restrain. Restrain. Restrain them. Eli let he abused his position as the high priest he let his sons do whatever they wanted and he paid the price. God is patient. Don’t confuse patience with acceptance. The remnant I want to be like the remnant I want to live like the remnant amen I don’t want to bow my knee to bail I don’t want to bow my knee to the president of the united states if he wants me to do what’s wrong I don’t want to bow my knee to the governor of california I don’t want to bow my knee to the the biggest church in the united states I don’t want you know I’m not beholden to you I’m gonna stand before God I’m gonna bow my knee before him.
Scripture in this part
Exodus 32:9 (NKJV)
And the LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!
— Exodus 32:9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 26:45How does the remnant live?
Short answer: They don’t compromise God’s word; they follow it courageously or timidly, and challenge a bad report.
▶ 28:54 The remnant they do not compromise the truth of God’s word like Moses he would not compromise with Pharaoh. They courageously or timidly follow the word of God you know Samuel he was young when you’re young it’s not so easy when you’re older like a bunch of guys in here they’ve already done it five thousand things had to have had five thousand problems already it gets a lot easier I’m sure maybe not. Courageously like Caleb he was courageous what are you talking about we can do this. We know he was courageous because when he went with Joshua man he was a fighter. Elijah was courageous.
▶ 29:46 You guys come up all of Israel 450 prophets come up here. We’re gonna bring the fire of God right he was courageous. Unapologetically challenged a bad report against the goal the cause that was Caleb bad bad report was brought against the goal against the cause trying to bring down the whole group. But Caleb said no you’re wrong. No. These men these people in the Bible these men and women they all were blessed because they made the choices that the remnant makes and we’ve got to remember that. That blessing at the end of your life is going to be way more important than the passing pleasures of whatever it else it is that you’re wanting to do.
