What did Jesus teach on divorce?

▶ Watch this part (0:00)

Short answer: Divorce except for sexual immorality causes adultery—four people from one divorce—and it hurts the innocent spouse and children.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 0:00 Jesus teaching on divorce we go to Matthew chapter 5 verse 31 it has been said whoever divorces his wife let him give her a certificate of divorce and then he gives us the spiritual and the moral of that law so Jesus said but I say to you whoever divorces his wife for any cause except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery period. And whosoever number two whosoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery. And whosoever in Luke 16:18 divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery see now you’ve got four people committing adultery. From one divorce now you see the picture here divorce shatters the heart when you divorce it hurts somebody somebody some innocent person is getting hurt also the children are innocent and they get hurt and so Jesus stands firm on divorce and adultery he stands firm he doesn’t waver.

How serious is divorce?

▶ Watch this part (1:10)

Short answer: He calls it a hell sin without repentance; love does no harm to your closest neighbors—your spouse and children.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 1:10 He says it’s wrong it’s a hell sin you spend eternity in the lake of fire if you don’t repent and change your ways. It’s a serious sin he stands strong divorce in America. Is 50. One-third of people just live together now they don’t even bother. Marrying and I’m talking about Christian. They just move in and they come to church and as Proverbs says they wipe their mouth and say I’ve done nothing wrong. God says it’s wrong. But he stands firm because divorce harms the innocent party and it harms the children and the Bible says if you love me you’ll keep my commandments. And the greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself for love does no harm to your neighbor and there’s no closer neighbor than your spouse and your children so they come to him to test him so they come to Jesus and they say is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause Jesus replied at the beginning Genesis 1 and 2 God made them male and female.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Romans 13:10 (NKJV)

The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’

— Matthew 19:3-4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 1:10 (quoted; reference not named in the message)

What did God make at the beginning?

▶ Watch this part (2:32)

Short answer: Male and female—“not transgenders”—joined in marriage as one flesh, with accountability for the family.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 2:32 Not transgenders. Not menstrual people not birthing women he made them male and female. And for this reason because I created the male and female for this reason a man shall leave his parents and be joined to his wife this is the marriage. Joined to his wife the word wife married taking a vow to be faithful to that person all the days of your life to treat them right Jesus said that was at the beginning. God’s law was marriage and he says the two become one flesh that is the intimate act between a man and a woman when you marry and you commit to that spouse that person and you have children. You have the liability to provide for and take care of that family you are accountable for that family you are accountable for how you treat that spouse and how you treat your children so what God has joined together who joined the marriage who invented the marriage God did who recognizes the marriage God does whom God has joined together.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Matthew 19:5 (NKJV)

and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?

Can you trade in a spouse?

▶ Watch this part (3:51)

Short answer: No—God says He hates divorce and calls it treachery.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 3:51 Let no human being separate. No divorce I don’t care if it’s ever in irreconcilable differences or whatever. He says let no man separate in Malachi chapter 2 verse 16 God so said I hate divorce. He said it is treachery when you make a vow to your spouse to be faithful to them care for them do them no harm and then you harm them God says that is treachery treachery is a serious sin so I don’t care if you married someone because they are a trophy and you want to be proud of walking down the street with them and catch the one that everybody wants to marry or you want to marry just for wealth or you just want to marry for sex you can’t trade them in when you marry God holds you accountable and responsible to be faithful and love that spouse and those children.

Why was divorce permitted?

▶ Watch this part (4:56)

Short answer: For hard hearts; God was gracious and willing to pardon Israel for 40 years.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 4:56 So here’s the human thinking again so the Pharisees well why did Moses give us a certificate. Of divorce. Number one it wasn’t Moses God made the law so Jesus said Moses because of the hardness of your hearts. Permitted or allowed divorce but from the beginning it was not so. God gave you permission to divorce because you’re a hard-hearted. People he is quoting from scripture by the way Nehemiah 9:16, 17 and 29.

▶ 5:39 They’ve hardened their necks they’ve hardened their heart and would not turn to God all 40 years in the wilderness when he brought them out of Egypt they were still worshiping idols all 40 years they were still lusting after evil things all 40 years and they were hard and they would not turn to God so God gave them permission to divorce from a hard heart was gracious unto them and willing to pardon hear Israel in the desert for 40 years found what grace in the eyes of the Lord and he was willing to pardon the divorce he was willing to pardon the idolatry he was willing to pardon them lusting after evil things and greed and things like that and he was willing to pardon their sexual immorality with the people of the other nations that they were not supposed to Deuteronomy 5:29 oh that there was a heart in them that they would fear and obey me that it might go well with them all that is their life see Jesus was quoting scripture God knew when he brought them out of Egypt that they had hard hearts many of them and he gave them a writing of divorcement first Corinthians 10 he said with many of them God was not well pleased

But You are God, Ready to pardon, Gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, Abundant in kindness, And did not forsake them.

Will He pardon today?

▶ Watch this part (7:10)

Short answer: Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 7:10 he was displeased with them and overthrew them in the wilderness those 21 and older or 20 and older did not go into the land. Hebrews 13:8 Christ is the same yesterday. Today. And forever. The same God in Genesis 1 and 2 is the same God at the end of Revelations. I am the Lord thy God and I change not he pardoned them in the wilderness if he is the same yesterday today and forever. And he pardoned him in the wilderness for idolatry and and lust and divorce then he will what pardon today. He is the same so Paul wrote in first Corinthians 7:15.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV)

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.

— 1 Corinthians 7:15 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:10 (quoted; reference not named in the message)

Must an abused spouse stay?

▶ Watch this part (8:04)

Short answer: No—God has called us to peace; the innocent spouse has a right to get out.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 8:04 If the married spouse leaves then let them remain unmarried and to come back together but if the unbelieving spouse don’t want to come back together and they depart the innocent one is not bound in such case God has called us to peace peace is the absence of conflict peace is the absence of war and when you’re in an abusive marriage you have a right to get out of it when people’s hearts even Christian ones are so hard that they will abuse their spouse. That spouse who is innocent has a right to get out of that marriage and that abuse and I can give you example after example. Especially women who churches and husbands use this verse wife submitting to your husband and the husband don’t want to go to church the husband don’t want to serve God and I have dealt with this for 50 years.

▶ 9:06 Women in abusive relationships and the church they go to demand that they submit to that husband and vice versa. You know they use the scripture you got to love your wife as the church and do do no harm to your wife and and you know no matter what I do you gotta love me no matter what I do you gotta stick with me you can’t divorce me women use that God has called us to peace no one has a right to physically abuse you and no one has the right to tell you how you should serve God God has the handle on that right himself. In a lot of churches denominations if you’re divorced you cannot be in ministry of any kind see that’s hard hearts and the Bible says that the son is not accountable for the sin of the father and the father is not accountable for the sin of the son but everyone’s accountable for their own sin it isn’t right for churches demand that a woman stay in an abusive relationship folks that’s not right Jesus knows that people’s hearts are going to get hard insensitive and they’re going to mistreat and they’re going to do things they shouldn’t do and that innocent party is not guilty of anything and even if they’re guilty and they come to their senses even the one who caused the divorce they come to their senses will he pardon absolutely.

What is Jesus’ final word?

▶ Watch this part (10:30)

Short answer: Divorce is not God’s plan, but the innocent have a way out and the repentant can be reconciled.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 10:30 And he’s making that very clear and then he ends it by saying I say to you whoever divorces his wife except for sexual immorality and marries in others commits adultery and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery Jesus sticks to his gun divorce is not God’s plan but if you are an innocent victim of it you have a way out and if you are the guilty party and you come to your senses and repent and get remorsed for it you can be reconciled back so he doesn’t let them get away from his stand he has at all. His disciples said if that’s the case it is better not to marry now here we go with a human thinking again God told him in Genesis to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth didn’t he we just read that God a man shall leave his mother and father and cleave to his wife does God want people to marry yes if people don’t marry is there a solution for them the disciples open it up with their natural thinking God never said Jesus never said in the previous verses not to marry did he but when we start thinking with the human mind well it’s better not to marry well how are we going to replenish the earth if we don’t marry.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Matthew 19:9-10 (NKJV)

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”

— Matthew 19:9-10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 10:30 (quoted; reference not named in the message)

What does “to whom it is given” mean?

▶ Watch this part (11:55)

Short answer: God empowers self-control for the single, the young and the abandoned.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 11:55 Jesus says only those to whom it is given can accept this saying what saying to not marry. Verse 12 there are those that are born eunuchs eunuch is a person who cannot have intimate relationship because of a defect here when they were born or made by men castrated if you’re a male and castrated if you’re a female and then sewn up and they do that in a in some nations today. He’s he’s saying these people can’t marry they can’t be reproduced they can’t have be joined together. Some made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake now we know from previous lessons that we are not to mutilate our body in any way we are not to harm our body or other people’s body in any way so this he is bringing in the spiritual aspect.

▶ 12:54 This is a spiritual aspect to a moral result they made themselves they decide they’re not going to marry Jesus is covering such a vast audience teenagers who are growing and getting an education to one day marry they got to use self-control until that day they marry don’t they and God is saying to whom it is given can accept it so even before you’re married Jesus is saying you can control yourself it’s given to you to control yourself. He who is able to accept it let him accept it now you’re forced to accept it if you’re single and if your spouse divorces you you’ve got to stay out of an adulterous situation until you remarry and he has given us something to do that and we know the fruit of the spirit have self-control in them don’t they God will give you what you need in the season you need it.

▶ 13:58 First Corinthians 7:7 for I would that all men were as I myself and has his proper gift of God one after this manner and another after that manner. Paul lived his whole life without getting married and Paul clearly says it was a gift of God it is given can accept this something is given what’s given the empowerment. To stay single and stay pure now who is able to accept it let him accept it except what the gift the empowerment from God to control yourself teenagers can control themselves young adults can control themselves because God will empower you in the season you need it and if you get married and your spouse kicked you out for no reason at all God will give you the power to hold on until you find another mate or you decide to live the rest of your life as single which some do but God will empower you see God’s the same yesterday today and forever if he pardoned Israel for their hard hearts he will pardon what people today for their hard hearts and especially if their hard heart caused an innocent one to suffer now verse eight to the unmarried and widows okay is this divorced person unmarried he says if they lack self-control it

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Matthew 19:11-12 (NKJV)

But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”

— Matthew 19:11-12 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:55 (quoted; reference not named in the message)
Scripture (NKJV)

1 Corinthians 7:7 (NKJV)

For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that.

— 1 Corinthians 7:7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 13:58 (quoted; reference not named in the message)

May they marry?

▶ Watch this part (15:29)

Short answer: Better to marry than to burn; they can be pardoned and marry. He is our peace.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Pastor David G. Kincer

▶ 15:29 is better to let them marry say it again let them marry it is better to marry than to burn with sexual passion and be tempted by Satan if they know they need to get married and their marriage is available. Paul says what Jesus said they can be pardoned and they can marry. Remember he has called us to peace peace is the absence of conflict. And in Ephesians 2:14. As a verse he is my peace he has broken down every wall. And wherever you’re at today half of you are in a family divorce and God is telling you both to the spouse and to the children I’ll empower you I’ll empower you to handle this situation.
