The old covenant was a shadow, not the goal. In the new covenant God writes His laws on our hearts, is our God, lets all know Him, and remembers sins no more. Jesus is the guarantee of a better, final covenant, and nothing may be added; any other gospel is accursed.

▶ 0:14 Off with this scripture Psalm 90 verses 14 and 15 satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days make us rejoice for as many days as you have humbled us for as many years as we have seen adversity and I just wanted to remind you that one thing I always say is stick with Jesus and you’ll have a happy life and this scripture is telling us to be we’ be glad all our days and the majority of our days should not be sorrow Jesus is the man of sorrows not us we should be filled with gladness at his faithful love and we the majority of our days at least as many as we have been afflicted we should be rejoicing but that’s not what I’m going to talk about I just always have to share that whenever I get up is stick with Jesus and you’ll have a happy life we’re going to talk about the new covenant and I know it’s been brought up a lot lately I hear it um uh being spoken by a lot of uh the messages that we had and we’re going to go to Hebrews the 8th chapter and it’s quoting directly from Jeremiah chapter 31 for this is the covenant I will make I

▶ 1:44 will put my laws into their mind and write them in their hearts I will be to them a God and they shall be to me a people they shall not teach every man his neighbor and every man his brother saying know the Lord for all shall know me from the least to the greatest I will be merciful to their unrighteousness and their sins and their iniquities I will remember no more and it is so important everybody should know what the new covenant is this is the new covenant and something I found out to remember to help me remember it is is count it one two 3 four it’s four parts count it on your fingers as you’re trying of learn it and it will help you remember. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

What was the old covenant?

▶ Watch this part (2:35)

Short answer: Regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary, a shadow and not the reality; the law could not take away sins.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 2:35 So so what’s the old covenant then if we have a new covenant that God made what’s the old covenant and Hebrews chapter 9 he explains it now the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary for a tent was constructed and which where the lampstand the table this is called the holy place behind the second curtain was a tent called the holy of holies in it stood the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant of these things we cannot now speak in detail but you see the little illustration there there was a there was a place it was a physical place and it had ceremonies and rituals and regulations.

▶ 3:22 And it’s also called the Old Testament so this is the covenant and the testament that God made with Israel through Moses way back then it was a physical place and it had rules and it was a representation of the future Hebrews 10 says since the law that Old Testament that old covenant has only a shadow of good things to come and not the true form of these realities it can never by the same sacrifices that are continually offered year after year and there was a ton of different sacrifices of all description and they were offered every year they were offered often they were offered in scheduled times and they were offered in unscheduled times and it said that those offerings could never make perfect those who approach for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Hebrews 9:1-2 (NKJV)

Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary. For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary;

— Hebrews 9:1-2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 2:35
Scripture (NKJV)

Hebrews 10:1-4 (NKJV)

For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

— Hebrews 10:1-4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:22

Was the old covenant the goal?

▶ Watch this part (4:28)

Short answer: No; Jeremiah 7 and Exodus 19 show God wanted obedience and a people.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 4:28 Sins so the old covenant was not the goal remember it said it was the form but not the reality of those things and Jeremiah uh he says plainly God says plainly that that old covenant with all its sacrifices and rituals and ceremonies was not the goal Jeremiah chapter 7 the prophet saying through go God is saying through the prophet when I brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt I did not speak with them or command them concerning burnt offering and sacrifice however I did give them this command obey me and then I will be your God and you will be my people you must follow every way I command you so that it may go well with you when the people were rescued out of Egypt God was telling them I didn’t command you at that time build me this and build me that and do this and do that he says no obey me this was the command I gave you and he repeats it in uh he chapter 2 yet now be strong and work for I am with you says the Lord of hosts according to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt so that my spirit remains among you fear not.

▶ 5:55 So and he did too uh in Jeremiah and he that was way after when Moses when God commanded Moses to do it but here it is right at the source Exodus 19 Moses went up to God on the mountain and the Lord called to him out of the mountain saying tell the children of Israel you have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I bear you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself now therefore if you will obey my voice inde deed and keep my covenant then you shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people for all the earth is mine and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation these are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel so he did too he said that was not my intention to build a place to build a a tent to build a building to build a a all these things that were used in it and to have sacrifices no it was to for you to obey my voice and that was his intention from the beginning so now we’re looking from that Old Testament that old system to the cross we’re looking forward now so uh all the time of that old covenant that Old Testament it was clearly laid out that it was going to end and a new covenant was coming so we’ll go back to Jeremiah 31:31 and he says the days are surely coming when

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

Jeremiah 7:22-23 (NKJV)

For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices. But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’

Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

What did God promise?

▶ Watch this part (7:26)

Short answer: A new covenant not like the one they broke; burnt offerings You have not required; a body You have prepared for Me. Who is me? Jesus.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 7:26 I will make a new covenant with the house of of Israel and with the house of Judah and he said further in the next verse it will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt it won’t be like that because they broke it they broke my covenant. And God is telling us that rituals and offerings was not what he wanted and we’re going to go look at Psalm 40 the old covenant I mean the new covenant is in the old covenant it wasn’t some new thing that was planned at the spur of the moment it was from the beginning Psalms 40 sacrifice and offering you did not desire but you have given me an open ear who’s.

▶ 8:20 Me who’s. Me who’s me. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required then I said who’s. I here I am in the scroll of the book it is written of me I delight to do your will oh God your law is within my heart who is I who is my me. Jesus okay.

▶ 8:54 And um the writer of Hebrews which we think is Paul the apostle he he is quoting this when Christ came into the world he God said sacrifices and offerings you have not desired but a body you God have prepared for me Jesus in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure then I said I is Jesus see I have come to do your will oh God in the scroll of the book it is written of me when he he said above okay now the writer is saying when he said above you have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and birth offerings and sin offerings and these all were offered according to the old covenant law that that ritual that shadow of what was coming of the reality that was coming then he added see I have come to do your will who came to do God’s will Jesus he abolishes.

Scripture (NKJV)

Jeremiah 31:31-32 (NKJV)

“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD.

Scripture (NKJV)

Hebrews 10:5-9 (NKJV)

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’ ” Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second.

— Hebrews 10:5-9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 8:54

Where can we study it?

▶ Watch this part (9:59)

Short answer: Hebrews lays it out step by step, and Galatians; don’t disregard the Old Testament either.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 9:59 The first in order to establish the second so uh just uh aide here if you are wanting to understand the new covenant better the book of Hebrews lays it out step by step if you want to read that also uh the book of Galatians is a very good place to get understanding about the old covenant versus the new covenant but in case we make. A bigger deal out of the old covenant than we should which was the rituals the sacrifices the rules the the physical place now the religious people of Jesus day did that they made a big deal out of the old covenant and the temples and stuff like that and they had a hard time understanding that there was a new covenant coming and there’s people today that say that the temple and the sacrifices are going to be set up.

▶ 11:01 Again uh and you shouldn’t think so much of that old stuff because it was just a shadow it was just a form of what was coming and but we shouldn’t disregard the scriptures of the Old Testament because they’re full of wisdom and truth for us so either extreme is is not good to indulge in to to say oh we disre everything in the Old Testament or oh it’s going to be set up again and I have found reading the Bible that the new covenant is all over the Old Testament scriptures right along with the practice of the rituals and the ceremonies the new covenant is all through the scriptures for people to to read and to understand and it pops up everywhere and I was reading oh that’s the new covenant oh that’s the new covenant and it’s the old covenant shadow the rituals the ceremonies that was being done away with not the truth of what God wanted if you obey me then you will be my people that’s what he was looking for not the sacrifices the animal sacrifices and the incense and the this and the that so the Old Testament is the old covenant the Old Testament is only a promise of what was coming in the new

Part one?

▶ Watch this part (12:32)

Short answer: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; one heart and a new spirit.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 12:32 now we’re going to go look at the new covenant itself and where where it can be found uh number one okay remember there’s how many parts four parts I will put my laws into their mind and write them in their hearts Isaiah 59 the redeemer will come to Zion and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression this is the lord’s declaration as for me this is my covenant with them here comes the new covenant my spirit who is on you and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth or from the mouth of your children or from the mouth of your children’s children from now on and forever says the Lord Psalm 25 what man is he that fears the Lord him will he teach in the way that he shall choose that’s a new.

▶ 13:26 Covenant Ezekiel 11 and I will we’ve heard this a ton of times lately it seems to be in every lesson we get and I will give them one heart. And well that’s the air conditioner and I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within you and I will take the stony heart out and will give them a heart of flesh that they may walk in my statutes and keep my ordinances and do. Them okay I number two I will be to them a God and they shall be to me a people Jeremiah chap 24 they will be my people and I will be their God well that’s obvious because they will return to me with all their heart that’s the new covenant Psalm 33 blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord and the people whom he has chosen for his own.

▶ 15:16 Okay number three you shall not they shall not teach every man his neighbor and every man his brother saying know the Lord for all shall know me from the least to the greatest and I Jeremiah 24 and I will give them a heart to know me that I am the Lord I will give them a heart to know me Isaiah 52 therefore my people shall know my name therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that does speak behold it is I Hosea 13 uh we just read this in the last one yet I am the Lord your God from the land of Egypt and you shall know no God but me for there is no savior beside me and Psalm 25 the secret of the Lord it with is with them that fear him and he will show them his covenant so are we beginning to see that uh hey the the new covenant is in the Old Testament is in the old covenant we can see it.

Part four?

▶ Watch this part (16:19)

Short answer: I will be merciful and remember their sins no more; My covenant with My chosen stands.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 16:19 There and number four I will be merciful to their unrighteousness and their sins and their iniquities I’ll remember no. More for your name’s sake oh Lord pardon my iniquity for it is great Psalm 89 oh this is a really. Really uh I don’t want I don’t want to say deep spiritual it is a really it’s a focus it’s a real focus for what you can possess in your life I have made a covenant with my chosen who’s my chosen.

▶ 16:56 Jesus my chosen I made a covenant with my chosen if his children forsake my law and walk not in my judgments if they break my statutes and keep not my commandments then will I visit their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes nevertheless my loving kindness will I not utterly take from him nor suffer my faithfulness to fail my covenant I will not break nor all alter the thing that is gone out of my lips he will be merciful he will correct us but he will keep his covenant and his mercy with us our job is just to say I messed up I was wrong I turn from that that’s our job he will not break his covenant he will not take his mercy away from you and Psalm 25 all the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies you do your job he will do his no.

▶ 18:09 Question and Jeremiah 33 and I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return and will build them as at the first and I will cleanse them from all their iniquity whereby they have sinned against me and I will pardon all their iniquities whereby they have sinned and whereby they have transgressed against me he will keep his covenant and he will keep his mercy if we will admit we are wrong if we will turn from our wrong the new covenant is also better than the old. Covenant and Hebrews chapter 8 but Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant which has been enacted on the basis of better promises for if that first covenant had been faultless there would have been no need to look for a second one in speaking of the new covenant he has made the first one obsolete God always planned to do away with that old covenant Jesus being the one who accomplished the best better covenant the complete covenant which was also the original.

Is it better and final?

▶ Watch this part (19:35)

Short answer: Jesus is the guarantee of a better covenant; He entered once for all with His own blood.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 19:35 Plan and uh Hebrews chapter 7 I didn’t put this on the board by so much was Jesus made a guarantee of a better testament a better covenant a better. Contract and he’s reminding us in Hebrews chapter 12 you haven’t come to a mountain that could be touched that was a physical place in the desert instead you have come to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant his covenant that he made with us is a better covenant than the one that was before which was always meant to be done away with so why look to set it up.

▶ 20:17 Again and the new covenant is also the last covenant we don’t go looking for another covenant Hebrews 9 but when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come he entered once for all into the holy place he entered into heaven itself not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood thus obtaining eternal redemption Christ having been offered once to bear the sins of many Jesus what Jesus did is the final work the new covenant is the last covenant and the best covenant there will not be another one so don’t go looking for something else and uh these next couple of verses I was thinking about these verses we always apply them to the last days and the end times.

For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. (For they could not endure what was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot with an arrow.” And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”) But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

Can anyone add to it?

▶ Watch this part (21:15)

Short answer: No; take heed no one deceives you; did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing of faith?

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 21:15 But I think they’re very relevant to the new covenant Jesus because Jesus did the complete work of reconciling us to God and there is nothing to add to it there is nothing to modify it. Matthew 24 and Jesus answered and said unto them take heed that no man deceive you for many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and deceive many and he repeats it in Luke 21 and he said take heed that you be not deceived for many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and the time draws near go go not therefore after them if there are teachings or opinions that are trying to add or modify somehow Jesus’s work on the cross recognize them for what they are don’t follow that they’re trying to draw attention to their themselves or their uh teachings and they’re trying to draw away attention from Jesus Christ like Paul he had to write to the galatian church he said oh foolish Galatians who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ had evidently been set forth crucified among you so they were taught that

▶ 22:45 Jesus died for your sins okay this now I’d learn of you did you receive that did you receive that spirit by the works of the law by the rituals and the ceremonies the sacrifices or did you receive salvation by hearing of faith so he’s saying are you isn’t that kind of foolish you began in the spirit and now you want to go to maturity with a fleshly teaching with a with a shadow that was done away with why do you want to do that so he did away with the ceremonies of the Old Testament so don’t look to try to revive them somehow or to belittle the work that Jesus did on the cross he said again lo if that any man shall say unto you oh lo here’s Christ or there he is don’t believe it for there shall arise false christs and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders in so much that if it were possible they shall deceive the very elect uh.

What about other gospels?

▶ Watch this part (23:59)

Short answer: Others overwrite it: Islam says Jesus didn’t die, Latter-day Saints that He is not God; let any other gospel be accursed.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Rita (guest speaker; not Pastor Kincer)

▶ 23:59 Wow that’s that’s a pretty strong warning and others have tried to overwrite the new covenant with their own customs and beliefs and opinions like uh for example Islam teaches that Jesus did not really die he did not die and the Latter-day Saints they teach that Jesus is not God they’re trying to modify the new covenant don’t whoops excuse me don’t believe it don’t go after that or as there’s another one um I think is still roaming around is that if you’re a if you’re a Jew if you’re the race of the Jews you have to still keep those Old Testament rituals so that uh the shadow law you still have to keep it that’s another one uh that’s that’s belittling the work that Jesus did.

▶ 25:00 And Paul is reminding them in the Galatians in the Galatian church but though we are an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you which was Jesus the new covenant Jesus died for our sins on the cross and he shed his blood let him be accursed as we have said before now say I again if any man preach any gospel unto you than you have received let him be accursed. Wow that’s that’s pretty strong. So Jesus finished the work you don’t have to go looking for anything else and in. Summary the new covenant is a clear and a simple work that God established from the beginning from before the creation of the world and for you make it your goal and your prayer to participate.

▶ 26:05 Completely in the new covenant and what is that new. Why does this church worship this way?

▶ Watch this part (27:18)

▶ 27:18 Everyone yes yes and amen yes thank you Rita for that reminder of God’s good word and his covenant. And like she was saying we. Want. To renew these things we want to make that agreement with Jesus Christ and we don’t have to go to anyone else but Jesus and again that’s why we worship today to bring his presence good morning everybody thank you for coming it’s good to see everybody today um we are the Vine Cluster Church here in Lake Elsinore at the outlets and our senior pastor is not here today but we still have our call to praise and to learn and to come and honor our Lord and savior Jesus Christ so that awesome um today I would just like to point out some things um as far as how we do worship uh for some new people here and also a reminder why I’ve visited many churches I’ve been at this church for many years and I know it’s a little different I realized this but I would like to just give you my testimony and ex and express the feeling from other people here who have been here for many years as well you can see here we have a banner of how

▶ 28:49 to praise and worship these are scriptures in the Psalms specifically that have directions of how to praise and also we have to remember that the Lord commands these things as well but from my own experience been doing this for many years and what I have seen is praise is also a gift from God it’s a gift to be able to express our appreciation and devotion to him and the Bible says that praise stills or freezes the enemy. And there are many things that happen in our lives that are like so overwhelming but when we praise we can find that expression that release and that connection with our our savior.

▶ 29:42 Amen and in the Bible we have examples of Jesus followers who were praising him in horrible. Situations for instance the apostles in the New Testament is specifically in the book of acts praised when they were in prison when they were chained and they were in prison because they were arrested by you know the soldiers in that time and they were shut down for sharing the gospel in a very tyrannical. Government they didn’t have instruments or word sheets yet they praised they found peace and deliverance even in I mean they were doing a good thing for the Lord and they were arrested and they found peace and deliverance during that time and then also in the Old Testament king David he’s.

▶ 30:36 Um the at that time was hunted by another king Solomon he was hunted by the king and his soldiers and fought many battles and in the Psalms he wrote so many expressions of just like horrible things he was going through and how he had lost and he had doubt but he ends these thoughts these different Psalms and different passages he ends up with praise and exaltation of God like saying hey I know that I’m going through this but God is my deliverer I can still lean on him and it’s just a beautiful thing and um many of us in the room have been through difficult times we’ve had anxious moments we’ve had unex expected like sorrow bad things happen but time after time we have found renewal in praise we find hope for tomorrow in praise God’s promises include joy peace hope love and faithfulness these are promises from God I wish that I could just hand them to you like a present I just want to give it to you so you can have it because it’s beautiful thing to have but I can’t but I know God can when we come before him when we praise and and other things as well but

▶ 32:07 specifically praise we’re talking about when we do these things he comes and he can give us exceedingly more abundantly is what the Bible says and it may seem so hard when we look around and we look at the world and we look at the news or whatever that is distracting us it may seem so hard for us to have those things that especially peace right now amen uh joy it may seem so hard but God says nothing is impossible. Nothing so let’s just you know have that tone in our in our thoughts in our hearts when we have worship today and let’s sing this song together amen and ask God come before him and just be ready to receive those gifts from him yes and amen amen. Oh praise the Lord praise the Lord all you nations praise all you people for his merciful kindness is great toward us and the truth of the Lord endures forever oh praise the Lord praise the Lord all your nations praise them all you people for his merciful kindness is great toward us and the truth of forever.

About this transcript

This transcript comes from YouTube’s automatic English captions, which supply the timing and the words. Punctuation, capitalization and paragraphing were added from the speaker’s pauses and then corrected by hand, and obvious caption errors (names, Bible references) were fixed; his wording was not rewritten. “[unclear]” marks a word or name that was not clear. Editor notes: The message comes first and the worship set after it. The worship leader says David was hunted by “another king Solomon”; left as said (Saul). The writer of Hebrews is attributed to Paul (“which we think is Paul”). Select any time to jump to that moment on YouTube.
