Holy Spirit Baptism for Today: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
In this message Pastor David G. Kincer teaches that the baptism of the Holy Ghost with power is a real experience separate from salvation and water baptism. He starts with John 7:38-39 and Jesus as the baptizer, covers prophecy, visions and the names of the Holy Spirit, then walks through the accounts in Acts of Pentecost, the believers in Samaria, Cornelius’s household and the disciples at Ephesus. He also speaks about unity in worship, mistakes in Spirit-filled churches, and the purpose of the Spirit’s power.
What is the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and what does John 7:38-39 promise?
Short answer: He says there is “an experience in God called the baptism of the Holy Ghost with power,” not just something at Pentecost, at salvation or at water baptism. He reads John 7:38-39 as a promise to believers, and says the criteria for having the Holy Ghost is “Believe. Okay, it’s not complicated.” The Spirit flows from “your belly, innermost being,” and “it’s not a ceremony, it’s not a ritual, it’s a real experience.”
▶ 0:00 They told me that Holy Spirit baptism was one time on the day of Pentecost, or it was when you get saved, or it was when you got water baptized. And you people need to know how to answer this stuff, and you also need to know that there is an experience in God called the baptism of the Holy Ghost with power that is vitally important to your life, to the church life, and what God is doing in the earth. Okay, and I’m going to give you biology this morning. Are you ready? John 7:38-39. It is a promise to believers. Now, the Holy Spirit is called the Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth, Comforter, My Spirit, and we’re going to give you the facts of the Holy Spirit. All right, nothing but facts. “He that believes on Me.” Okay, how many of you believe on Jesus? Where’s the rest of you? Huh, now.
▶ 1:08 Okay, John 3:16 says, “He that believes on Me shall not perish but have everlasting life.” Same statement here, but instead of everlasting life, He says, “As the Scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” And this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive, for the Holy Ghost was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified. He hadn’t died and risen again, and so the Holy Spirit hadn’t been poured out on all flesh yet. But what’s the criteria for having the Holy Ghost? Believe. Okay, it’s not complicated. All right, and where will we experience this Holy Ghost? Out of your belly, innermost being. You’re going to experience it in that inner man that you really are, that spirit that’s really inside that body.
▶ 2:15 Let me just share with you here a minute. It said, “As the Scripture has said” in the Old Testament. In Job 32:18, Elihu said, “I am full of the matter, the spirit within me constrains me. Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent, it is ready to burst like new wine bottles.” See, in the Old Testament Scriptures God already said He was going to do this. All right, and it’s going to pour out of our innermost being. It’s not a ceremony, it’s not a ritual, it’s a real experience. In Isaiah 58:11: “You shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not.” Hallelujah. And so this is the promise of that in John 7:38.
Scripture in this part
John 7:38-39 (NKJV)
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
— John 7:38-39 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:39John 3:16 (NKJV)
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
— John 3:16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 1:09Job 32:18-19 (NKJV)
For I am full of words; The spirit within me compels me. Indeed my belly is like wine that has no vent; It is ready to burst like new wineskins.
— Job 32:18-19 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 2:22Isaiah 58:11 (NKJV)
The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
— Isaiah 58:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 2:56Who baptizes in the Holy Ghost, what is the power for, and what does it mean to be a witness? (Luke 3:16; 24:49; Acts 1:8; 22:15)
Short answer: He says “Jesus is the baptizer in the Holy Ghost,” who “shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire,” which is “what happened on the day of Pentecost.” He says “we are clothed with power when the Holy Ghost comes upon us,” and that the Holy Ghost coming upon you means “we put it on like a coat.” He adds that “a witness is someone who has seen or experienced facts,” and “we are proof that His salvation works.”
▶ 3:14 We find that Jesus is the baptizer in the Holy Ghost. All right, Luke 3:16: “I indeed baptize you with water, but One mightier than I comes,” this is John the Baptist talking, “the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.” And that’s what happened on the day of Pentecost, tongues of fire, baptism of the Holy Ghost. All right, so Jesus is the baptizer, Jesus is the sender. Luke 24:49: “I send the promise of My Father upon you, but you wait in Jerusalem until you be clothed with power from on high.” You see, we receive and we are clothed with power when the Holy Ghost comes upon us. Acts 1:8: “You shall receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” You see, the Scriptures don’t always use “baptized in the Holy Ghost” and “filled with the Holy Ghost.” It also uses a statement that the Holy Ghost comes upon you, so we put it on like a coat.
▶ 4:34 “And you shall be witnesses unto Me.” Everybody uses that as we’re witnessing to the world, in Jerusalem, Samaria, Judea, and the uttermost parts of the earth, but it isn’t stated that way. It’s “witnesses unto Me.” Now, a witness is someone who has seen or experienced facts. And so “witnesses unto Me,” we experience His salvation, we see His truths, we experience the baptism of the Holy Ghost, we experience water baptism. Witnesses unto Him. Are you there?
▶ 5:24 In Acts 22:15, God tells Paul, “You shall be His witnesses unto all men of what you have seen and heard.” Now here He’s saying, Paul, you’re going to go and be witnesses of what you’ve seen and heard. So Paul had the first what? See truth and hear truth, possess truth before he could go and be a witness to people that didn’t know the truth. Have you got it? See, first we’ve got to see, we’ve got to hear, we got to possess. That makes us witnesses unto Him. See, we are proof that His salvation works. We are proof, and then He sends us as witnesses to the world.
Scripture in this part
Luke 3:16 (NKJV)
John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
— Luke 3:16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:20Luke 24:49 (NKJV)
Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
— Luke 24:49 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 3:50Acts 1:8 (NKJV)
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
— Acts 1:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 4:12Acts 22:15 (NKJV)
For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.
— Acts 22:15 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 5:24Who is the Spirit poured out on, and what does “prophesy” mean in Acts 2:17?
Short answer: He reads Acts 2:17 and says the Holy Ghost is “God’s Spirit,” poured out “upon all flesh,” so “you can be baptized, filled with, have the Holy Ghost come upon you with power.” He says “prophesy” there “just simply means speaking by the inspiration of the Spirit,” and he asks who could use a tongue “spoke by the inspiration of the Spirit instead of the inspiration of your emotions.”
▶ 6:22 It is the Spirit of God with natural, supernatural signs. Okay, it is the Spirit of God. Acts 2:17: “It shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out,” whose Spirit? My Spirit. So the Holy Ghost is whose Spirit? God’s Spirit. Are you with me? All right, “upon all flesh.” How many flesh? All. So you can be baptized, filled with, have the Holy Ghost come upon you with power. “Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.” “Prophesy” there just simply means speaking by the inspiration of the Spirit. How many could use a tongue that’s spoke by the inspiration of the Spirit instead of the inspiration of your emotions? Yeah. See, this thing is important. This Holy Spirit is very important. “Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” Now these are indications of the manifestations of the Spirit of God.
Scripture in this part
Acts 2:17-18 (NKJV)
‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
— Acts 2:17-18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:31What is the difference between prophesying and predicting, and what kind of visions does he want? (Acts 21:9; 1 Corinthians 14:3)
Short answer: He says Philip’s daughters prophesied as “they spoke by the inspiration of the Spirit,” and “there’s a big difference when you go into predicting” and claiming the office of a prophet: “if you miss one time, the Bible says you’re a false prophet.” He says “prophesying for edification, exhortation, and comfort is totally different.” On visions, he wants the kind Peter and Stephen had, “not pizza nightmares,” and of the pizza kind he says “there’s no message in it, there’s no edification in it.”
▶ 7:48 In Acts 21:9, Philip had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. Okay, they spoke by the inspiration of the Spirit. Agabus, he was the office of a prophet. There’s a big difference when you go into predicting. You are saying, “I’m in the office of a prophet. I’m like Jeremiah, I’m like Isaiah, I’m like John the Baptist, I’m like Jesus, I’m like Paul,” and if you miss one time, the Bible says you’re a false prophet and we’re not to fear you. Now, prophesying for edification, exhortation, and comfort is totally different. And so somebody over there brought up a false prophet to me, and I said, “What name did you say?”
▶ 8:42 And he repeated the name. I said, “That guy’s a false prophet. I know that guy.” I said, “He gives Spirit-filled people a bad name, and those guys with him are false prophets, because they miss.” And when you predict that something’s going to happen in your name and you miss, that’s it, it’s over. Could that be an amen? And Spirit-filled people need to stop being in fantasy land, thinking these guys have some kind of connection with God, and they are missing. They are prophesying and they are missing in the name of the Holy Ghost, and it does give us a bad name. Are you there?
▶ 9:34 So, visions. Remember, Peter had visions that the Gentiles were not unclean, and he had a vision of an angel coming to him in jail and bringing him out. Stephen was full of the Holy Ghost, he had a vision of Jesus standing at the right hand of God and saw the glory of God. Folks, that’s the kind of visions that we need, not pizza nightmares. Most people come to me with visions, and I just tell them, “Listen, did you have pizza last night and have a pizza nightmare?” There’s no message in it, there’s no edification in it, there’s nothing but you trying to show your kind of spiritual nothing, that you think you’re something that’s not. The visions. Other names of the Holy Spirit.
Scripture in this part
Acts 21:9 (NKJV)
Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.
— Acts 21:9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 7:481 Corinthians 14:3 (NKJV)
But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
— 1 Corinthians 14:3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 8:27 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 10:9-16 (NKJV)
The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.
— Acts 10:9-16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 9:38 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 12:7-10 (NKJV)
Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands. Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.” So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.
— Acts 12:7-10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 9:44 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 7:55-56 (NKJV)
But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
— Acts 7:55-56 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 9:47 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does “Comforter” mean, and what is the Holy Spirit like? (John 14:16)
Short answer: He explains “Comforter” as “a legal adviser, an advocate, a counselor, a helper.” He says the Holy Ghost is “not out to condemn you,” not “out to punish you,” but “out to change you and help you in your time of need,” and that “there’s nothing weird about the Holy Ghost.” He says the Spirit will not forsake you, and “He’s a Spirit of Truth, He only speaks truth and only drives you to truth.”
▶ 10:26 John 14:16: “I will pray the Father and He will give you another Comforter.” Okay, “Comforter” is a legal adviser, an advocate, a counselor, a helper. How many could use a counselor and a helper? Yes. And when it comes to God’s Word, could you use a little legal advice instead of men’s? Yes, this Holy Ghost is important. Okay, He’s the Comforter. He’s not out to condemn you, He’s not out to punish you, He is out to change you and help you in your time of need. There’s nothing weird about the Holy Ghost.
▶ 11:11 Just because some people make it weird doesn’t mean the Holy Ghost is weird. “Now He will abide with you” for how long? Yeah, see, Jesus said, “I will never leave you or forsake you,” and the Holy Ghost won’t forsake you. He’s going to stick with you. And He’s called the Spirit of Truth. Is He ever going to lie to you? Would He ever give a false prophecy? No. You can’t give a false prophecy and say it’s from the Spirit or from God. He’s a Spirit of Truth, He only speaks truth and only drives you to truth.
Scripture in this part
John 14:16-17 (NKJV)
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
— John 14:16-17 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 10:26Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
— Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:25 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Can people grieve, quench, resist or reject the Holy Ghost? (John 14:26)
Short answer: Reading John 14:26, he asks “who has to really teach you? The Holy Spirit.” He says “we can grieve the Holy Ghost, we can quench the Holy Ghost, and we can resist the Holy Ghost,” and that you grieve Him “when you live a bad lifestyle.” He says you can be “a religious person and actually reject the Holy Spirit convicting you,” and shares that as a young man he would “just shove that Holy Ghost away” until “He got my attention, and it’s been a great life ever since.”
▶ 11:55 Okay, John 14:26: “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, will teach you” what? “All things.” See, I can get up here and I can give you Bible knowledge, I can guide you through the Bible and teach you, but who has to really teach you? The Holy Spirit. You got to let the Holy Spirit enlighten you, open your spiritual understanding. So you can sit there and turn me off, you can sit there and turn the Holy Ghost off. In fact, I got up here, we can grieve the Holy Ghost, we can quench the Holy Ghost, and we can resist the Holy Ghost, and so many people resist Him. And a lot of people who got saved and moved on and got water baptized, were following the Spirit and all that, then they get worldly and they quench the Holy Ghost. They put Him out, they can’t hear His voice anymore. And you grieve Him when you live a bad lifestyle. You really grieve Him. Are you with me?
▶ 13:06 But see, when we’re living a bad lifestyle, we shove Him out of our life. We don’t want His voice telling us, “Straighten up.” And He’s only going to speak to us what? Truth. He is a Spirit of Truth. He’s not going to approve of you when you’re wrong. You got to get in your little clique and get them to approve of you, because the Holy Ghost isn’t going to do it, and that’s why we have our little cliques. We need to get into the Holy Spirit clique. The Bible says the scribes and the Pharisees rejected the counsel of God.
▶ 13:42 The Holy Spirit, we can reject the Holy Ghost. You can reject Him this morning. You can be a religious person and actually reject the Holy Spirit convicting you and trying to convince you of truth. You can just shove Him aside. I did it as a young man. I believed in God, but I had plans and I had purposes, and I would just shove that Holy Ghost away. I didn’t want to be convicted, I didn’t want to be convinced of another way, I wanted my way, until finally He got my attention, and it’s been a great life ever since.
Scripture in this part
John 14:26 (NKJV)
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
— John 14:26 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:56Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
— Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 12:30 (quoted; reference not named in the message)1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NKJV)
Do not quench the Spirit.
— 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 12:33 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 7:51 (NKJV)
“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
— Acts 7:51 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 12:35 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Luke 7:30 (NKJV)
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
— Luke 7:30 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 13:40 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Why does he say unity in worship matters for God’s presence in a church? (Acts 1:14–2:2)
Short answer: He says that when he showed people the Scriptures that Holy Spirit baptism is separate, the response was “We don’t interpret it that way.” On Acts 1:14 through 2:2 he says to get God’s presence “we need to be in one accord and in worship,” following the song leader: “if the song leader asks you to stand, what do we do? Stand.” He says that when everyone does their own thing, “no one sees Jesus exalted, they see you.”
▶ 14:16 Now, the fulfilled part. Okay, we’re going to show you that it’s a separate event from water baptism, it’s a separate event from salvation. Okay, these people said that the Holy Ghost was only given on the day of Pentecost, that was it. Or they said you get it at salvation, or they said you get it when you’re water baptized. And even though I showed them these Scriptures, they simply said, “We don’t interpret it that way.” That was their answer. Acts 1:14 through chapter 2:2. They were all in one accord in prayer and supplication. Okay, here’s how to get God’s presence in a church. We need to be in one accord and in worship.
▶ 15:05 How do you stay in one accord? Who do you follow? The song leader. If the song leader claps their hands, you clap your hands. Song leader raises the hand, you raise your hand. See, that way we can be in unity. It’s that simple, church. It’s not a mystery. If the song leader asks you to stand, what do we do? Stand, unless there’s something physically wrong. There’s no problem if you physically can’t stand. All right, and if you don’t want to lift your hands, you don’t have to. But if you want the glory of God to come in the church, if you’re part of the church and you want God’s presence to come, He is telling you to get in unity.
▶ 15:53 Amen. And the Bible says to lift your hands, the Bible says to sing unto God, the Bible says to stand in His presence, the Bible says to kneel before Him. All these are Bible things. And so when we join together, then people come in, and I’ve seen it in days past, not so much here because we’re all doing our little thing, but I’ve seen it in days past when the church was in unity, unbelievers come in and they, well, everybody’s got their hands up, I better raise my hand up, and God honors it. Amen. Everybody’s clapping, I better clap, and then God honors it.
▶ 16:28 God touches them. But when you got everybody doing their own thing, no one sees Jesus exalted, they see you. When you go to the military, those guys are in step. If one guy is out of step, you don’t see the other group, you see that one guy that’s out of step. That’s who your attention is drawn to. And see, when we want to do our own thing, we bring attention to ourselves, not to Jesus. Amen. You got the principle, folks. This stuff works. I’m telling you, it works. God honors it, and we need the Spirit of God in our services.
Scripture in this part
Acts 1:14 (NKJV)
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
— Acts 1:14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 14:48Acts 2:1-2 (NKJV)
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
— Acts 2:1-2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 14:51What happened on the day of Pentecost, and how do you know you have been filled? (Acts 2:2-4)
Short answer: He says all 120 in the upper room “were filled with the Holy Ghost, not just the apostles,” and they spoke with other languages “as the Spirit gave them utterance.” He says “they didn’t fake it” and “you don’t manufacture, God does it.” Asked how you know you are filled, he says “believe me, you will know,” because it is “a visitation of power, supernatural ability.” He adds that “without Him we’re just a social club.”
▶ 17:20 They were praying and they were supplicating, they were petitioning God for this Holy Ghost. Supplication is a petition. “A sound came from heaven as a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the house where they were sitting. There appeared unto them cloven tongues like as fire.” That’s what John said, He would baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. That’s what happened on the day of Pentecost, and it sat upon each one of them. All right, and they were what? All filled. All 120 people in that upper room were filled with the Holy Ghost, not just the apostles.
▶ 17:55 And they began to what? Speak. You see, I got it in red because this is a result of the Holy Ghost. He affects your tongue, and you’re going to learn how to speak from the Holy Spirit. And they spoke with other languages, okay, “as the Spirit gave them utterance.” They didn’t fake it, they didn’t pretend it like I saw in Pentecostal churches when I was a young believer. They would come up and tickle their chin and say, “Jibber jibber jib jra.” That ain’t it. I’m a young Christian and I know better than that. You don’t manufacture, God does it. Hallelujah.
▶ 18:41 And someone asked me, “Well, how do you know when you’ve been filled with the Holy Ghost?” Believe me, you will know. It comes from your innermost being. It is a visitation of power, supernatural ability. Believe me, you will know, tongues or no tongues, you will know. All right, “the Spirit gave them utterance.” Do we want the Spirit to come in our church and speak? Amen, to build the church of God and touch people’s lives. Yeah, folks, without Him we’re just a social club. Don’t you get it? You take the Holy Ghost out of this, we just got a social club. You get the Holy Ghost in it, you got a church.
Scripture in this part
Acts 2:2-4 (NKJV)
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
— Acts 2:2-4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 17:27 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does he say about communal living and about not forbidding tongues? (Acts 2:44-45; 1 Corinthians 14:39)
Short answer: He says others teach “this communal living doctrine,” but Philip “had a house,” Simon “had a house,” and “they taught from house to house.” He says the early believers sold property because “they understood the abomination of desolation that was coming,” but “they kept their houses.” He says the apostles were “already believers,” and the Holy Ghost was “a separate experience from water baptism and salvation.” He also asks what do you do with the verse “forbid not to speak in tongues.”
▶ 19:26 Now, also over there they’re teaching this communal living doctrine. I haven’t heard that since the hippies. God, and I went down in Acts 2, it said they all had all things in common, and they sold the properties, and later, you know, no one said anything was their own. And I told the guy, I said, “Man, you’re a millionaire. You’re a graduate of Yale, and you say that is communal living?”
▶ 19:58 I said, “Don’t you know that Philip had a house? Are you there? Simon had a house. They taught from house to house. These people still lived in a house by themselves.” And folks, they sold their properties for the, they understood the abomination of desolation that was coming. They understood that the property around Jerusalem was going to be worthless because Daniel’s abomination of desolation was coming, and so they sold all this other stuff and their investments because they knew it was not going to have any value, but they kept their houses. All right, and then they were persecuted and sent out all over.
▶ 20:45 Okay, are they already believers? Yes. Okay, have they all been baptized? Yes, the apostles have been baptized. They were already believers, and now the Holy Ghost came, a separate experience from water baptism and salvation. And the Bible also says to covet to prophesy and “forbid not to speak in tongues.” I said, “What do you do with that verse? You guys don’t even believe in tongues.” The one worried about, for, you know, heaven to forbid it. I said, “What do you do with that verse? That verse implies there’s going to be tongues, there’s going to be languages. Isn’t that right?” And he says, “Don’t stop it, just get it organized.”
Scripture in this part
Acts 2:44-45 (NKJV)
Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
— Acts 2:44-45 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 19:381 Corinthians 14:39 (NKJV)
Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.
— 1 Corinthians 14:39 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 21:13What does he say tongues are a sign for, and what did being filled again do for Peter and the church? (1 Corinthians 14:22; Acts 4:8, 4:31)
Short answer: He says tongues are “a sign for who? The unbeliever,” and to get an unbeliever’s attention, “let the Holy Spirit move in a language that you don’t know.” He lists “power to speak, power to smite the enemies, power to do miracles, power to convert souls.” In Acts 4:8 Peter “had already been filled with the Holy Ghost in Acts chapter 2” and is “filled again, as an individual,” speaking “a powerful word of God.” In Acts 4:31, the church prayed in one accord, “the place was shaken,” and they spoke “with boldness,” which he calls confidence: the Holy Ghost “will only allow you to speak truth, not your opinion.”
▶ 21:37 He also said that tongues are a sign for who? For who? The unbeliever. Oh, now that should jar a lot of us Pentecostal people, because we get in our little tongue-talking contest, and tongues are a sign for who? The unbeliever. You want to get unbelievers’ attention, let the Holy Spirit move in a language that you don’t know. It will get their attention if they know it. Power. Power to speak, power to smite the enemies, power to do miracles, power to convert souls. Acts 4:8: Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost. Now, Peter had already been filled with the Holy Ghost in Acts chapter 2, right? Now he’s filled again, as an individual, not a group. This one, this is an individual. He was filled with the Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost came upon him, and he said unto the leaders that were angry because they healed that guy at the temple, he spoke a powerful word of God to them. So the result of the Holy Ghost coming on Peter was speaking.
▶ 22:48 All right, chapter 4:31: “When they had prayed.” Okay, the church got together. They persecuted, they beat the apostles, the church got together and they prayed in one accord. Now, what’s being in one accord? Everybody doing the same thing at the same time. We worship, we pray, you know, that’s being in one accord. We pray for the what? We want God to do, and we pray together, we worship together. See, when they were in one accord praying, the place was shaken. Boy, how many would like to see this barn shake? Amen. Yeah, some of us need to see something shake. You know, we say we serve a supernatural God, then we take the supernatural out of Him.
▶ 23:46 “And they were all filled.” How many? All that were in there with the Holy Ghost, “and they spoke the word of God with boldness.” Here there’s no tongues. They just spoke the Word of God with what? Confidence. Confidence. Are you confident when you speak the Word of God? The Holy Ghost will give you that confidence, because He will only allow you to speak truth, not your opinion, so you can speak confidently. And I try to tell young ministers, speak like it’s God’s Word. It’s truth. Don’t speak like it’s a suggestion, it’s your opinion. Speak like it is. It is truth. Amen.

1 Corinthians 14:22 (NKJV)
Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.
— 1 Corinthians 14:22 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 21:39Acts 4:8 (NKJV)
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:
— Acts 4:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 22:14Acts 4:31 (NKJV)
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
— Acts 4:31 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 22:50Is being filled a one-time experience, and what does he mean by “great grace”? (Acts 4:33; 13:9, 52; 14:1)
Short answer: He says “grace is divine enablement. There’s power in grace,” and “great grace was upon them, not a little bit of grace,” and he warns against the idea “You’re just favored and God just loves you no matter what.” He says Paul was filled again in Acts 13:9 and the disciples again in Acts 13:52, asking “So it is a what? Continual experience.” He says “they weren’t always filled with the Holy Ghost, but when the Holy Ghost wanted to do something, He come upon them.”
▶ 24:41 “Confidently, and with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of Jesus. Great power, great grace was upon them all.” We told you that grace is to grow. We’re supposed to grow in grace. That grace has a doctrine. Grace isn’t just favor from God and I’m His little, you know, believer that He just favors me. No, grace is divine enablement. There’s power in grace, and “great grace” was upon them, not a little bit of grace. So how many would like more grace? Yeah, it’s Bible to want more grace. Don’t believe these people that just, “You’re just favored and God just loves you no matter what.”
▶ 25:26 There is divine enablement for greater things. Okay, this is the second time they were filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 13:9. Paul already had been filled with the Holy Spirit, had his eyes open, met Jesus on the road to Damascus, but here in 13:9, Paul was filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on the sorcerer, and smote him with blindness. The sorcerer was trying to distract the people from hearing the Word, and Paul just looked at it and said, “God smite you with blindness.” Bam, the guy went blind. You see, it gives us power to smite our enemies, cast out demons. There’s power in the Holy Ghost. It gives us power to embarrass the enemy.
▶ 26:19 Verse 52: the disciples were filled with joy and with the what? Holy Ghost. They already been filled twice, and here they are filled again. So it is a what? Continual experience. So that means they weren’t always filled with the Holy Ghost, but when the Holy Ghost wanted to do something, He come upon them, and out of their innermost being these words flow out and things happened. And this is what us Pentecostals have got to get together. I don’t know, you know this, but your pastor is a Spirit-filled person. He has spoken in tongues.
▶ 27:05 When I spoke in Third World countries, I interpreted a lot of tongues. All right, it is a sign for the unbeliever. Doesn’t happen so much in America. And this happened in Iconium, and they so spoke that a great multitude believed. They so spoke by the Holy Ghost that a great multitude believed. How many would like to see [unclear] really get a word from the Spirit of God? Amen, yes. See, that’s our cry, that’s my cry, that we get past the form and into the force. Yes, see, we get past the fear and into the force.

Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed.
— Acts 14:1 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 27:20 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does Samaria show about Holy Spirit baptism being separate from believing and water baptism? (Acts 8:12-17)
Short answer: He says the Samaritans believed and were baptized in water, yet when Peter and John came “as yet He was fallen upon none of them,” and then “they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost.” He says “it didn’t happen at water baptism, it didn’t happen when they believe, it happened when God made it happen,” and calls it “a different experience from salvation, a different experience from water baptism.”
▶ 27:55 Okay, are they already believers? Yep. Have they been water baptized? Yeah. See, it didn’t happen at water baptism, it didn’t happen when they believe, it happened when God made it happen. It happens when it happens. Acts 8:12: “When they believed Philip preaching the things of the kingdom of God,” he went down to Samaria, and the name of Jesus Christ, and miracles, “they were all baptized, both men and women.” Okay, so they believed. Okay, are they filled with the Holy Ghost? Not yet. Are they baptized in water? Yes. Are they filled with the Holy Ghost yet? No. Verse 14: Peter and John came down and prayed for them to receive the Holy Ghost, “as yet He was fallen upon none of them.”
▶ 28:51 Now here they use the word “fallen.” See, come upon. “Only they were baptized in the name of the Lord.” Had they been water baptized? Had they been water baptized? The story is the story, church. Do you get it? Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost. A different experience from salvation, a different experience from water baptism. Already believers, they were already baptized. Okay, now separate event. You agree? Is that what the Scripture says? Yes. Say amen if you got it. Amen. All right, say it with fortitude. Amen. All right, now I believe you.
Scripture in this part
Acts 8:12 (NKJV)
But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.
— Acts 8:12 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 28:16Acts 8:14-17 (NKJV)
Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
— Acts 8:14-17 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 28:43What does Cornelius’s household show about the order of salvation, the Holy Ghost and water baptism? (Acts 10:44-48)
Short answer: He says “everything is backwards here”: the Holy Ghost fell on people who “were unbelievers,” and “before he could have an altar call for salvation, God just filled them with the Holy Ghost.” He says the Jews with Peter “were astonished,” and that the Gentiles “spoke with tongues again and magnified God.” He gives the order: “First you got the Holy Ghost, then you got them believing, and then you got them water baptized,” and calls it “separate experience from water baptism and the salvation of your soul.” He says God did it “because He knew these dumbbells in the future would twist the Scriptures and rob people of a real experience in God.”
▶ 29:49 Now, this one is really interesting. God really dazzles you when you come to Cornelius. All right, I mean, everything is backwards here. God just don’t fall into our little pattern all the time, and He does have a pattern, but He’s God, He can go outside His pattern. We’re not allowed to, but He’s God, He can do anything He wants when He wants. Okay, Cornelius is a Roman soldier, praying and fasting. An angel came, told him go down and get Peter to come up and preach to him. So he went down and got Peter, Peter come up and spoke, and as Peter spoke the Word of God, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the Word.
▶ 30:30 All these people came to Cornelius’s house. They were unbelievers. Peter had to come and preach the gospel to them. These were unbelievers, and before he could have an altar call for salvation, God just filled them with the Holy Ghost. How could He do such a thing? Because He knew these dumbbells in the future would twist the Scriptures and rob people of a real experience in God, a powerful experience in God, by their theological interpretations. And so here He really just messes everything up.
▶ 31:08 They were filled with the Holy Ghost before a salvation call and before their water baptism, and they of the circumcision, the Jews that came with Peter, were astonished because on the Gentiles was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. They were just astonished. How can this be? You know, it’s us [unclear], no more. You know, it’s just us people, with the, we’re the people. Hallelujah. And God said He would pour out His Spirit on how many flesh? All flesh. You are a candidate for the Holy Ghost. “For they heard them speak with tongues.” Oh, tongues again.
▶ 31:43 My gosh, how could God do such a thing? They spoke with tongues again and magnified God, or praised God. Remember, on the day of Pentecost they spoke the mighty works of God. Here they praise and enlarged, magnified God. Then commanded Peter that they be baptized in water in the name of the Lord. Amen. First you got the Holy Ghost, then you got them believing, and then you got them water baptized. He’s God. He had definitely, this is a what? Separate experience from water baptism and the salvation of your soul. Unbelievers, not baptized, they got the Holy Ghost.
Scripture in this part
Acts 10:44-48 (NKJV)
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
— Acts 10:44-48 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 30:27 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What happened in Ephesus in Acts 19, and what does he say about churches that do not teach the baptism of the Holy Ghost?
Short answer: He says Paul asked, “Have you people received the Holy Ghost since you believed?” and they were “in a group that didn’t teach the Holy Ghost.” He says “when you don’t teach the baptism of the Holy Ghost, you are robbing the people of a powerful experience in God that will help them in daily life.” After Paul laid hands on them, “they spoke in languages again, and they prophesied.” He says tongues are “a sign for the unbeliever, prophecy is for the believer.”
▶ 32:37 All right, now we go to Acts 19. Here Paul comes to Ephesus, and Paul says, “Have you people received the Holy Ghost since you believed?” And of course they were in a group that didn’t teach the Holy Ghost. And see, when you don’t teach the baptism of the Holy Ghost, you are robbing the people of a powerful experience in God that will help them in daily life and help us reach the world for Christ. You got that? And here’s a group that wasn’t teaching. They said, “We never heard of it.” So when Paul preached to them, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
▶ 33:23 Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues. Oh my God, that tongue again. That tongue just drives people nuts. They spoke in languages again, and they prophesied. They spoke by the inspiration, they did both of them. All right, so three out of five times they spoke with tongues, and we don’t know one of those times if they did or not because he didn’t say. He just didn’t say. And tongues are a sign for who? The unbeliever. Don’t forget that. Tongues are a sign for the unbeliever, prophecy is for the believer. Hallelujah.
Scripture in this part
Acts 19:1-7 (NKJV)
And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all.
— Acts 19:1-7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 32:39What does he say about excesses and “funny things” in Spirit-filled churches, and the claim that the Holy Ghost is not for today?
Short answer: He admits “us Pentecostals, we do make mistakes,” and that “babies in Christ” may “speak some silly things,” but compares them to children: “we don’t kick them out of the house and condemn them.” He says “these things hurt no one,” and asks “how does tongues hurt you?” He says teaching that the Holy Ghost “isn’t for today” hurts people because “you’re robbing them of a tremendous experience and truth in God,” and that being offended by it is “called pride.” He says “I would rather be in a Spirit-filled church with some funny things going on.”
▶ 34:16 Now, I tell these brethren, you know, us Pentecostals, we do make mistakes. Okay, we get too shaken, we slain in the Spirit, we fall for this stuff, and we even have babies in Christ that speak some silly things. Okay, me and Mr. Barnes heard some of that in one of the services. Didn’t bother us any, we just knew they were babies in Christ. And you know, children, they say strange things, and we just laugh and we don’t kick them out of the house and condemn them. These things hurt no one. I asked them, “How does tongues hurt you?” It doesn’t hurt you. There’s no physical harm, there’s no spiritual harm because somebody speaks in tongues. If somebody shakes and falls down on the ground, how does that hurt you? Why are you offended at that? That does no personal harm to you, does it? You’re only hurt because they’re not believing what you believe. That’s why you’re hurt. It’s called pride.
▶ 35:27 But I said, “Now, let’s get to your end. You’re telling people that the Holy Ghost isn’t for today. That hurts them because you’re robbing them of a tremendous experience and truth in God. I said, are you over here, you’re telling them that they get the Holy Ghost when they were water baptized and they didn’t get anything. You’re robbing them. I said, who’s really doing the hurting here? You’re robbing people of an experience in God.” Amen. So we have a few funny things going on.
▶ 36:15 I would, listen, I would rather be in a Spirit-filled church with some funny things going on, and believe me, I have the authority to control things. You don’t believe me, you watch funny things happen. Yeah, we don’t have to hurt people and step on them, we can just guide them. We can grow in this thing. How many, when you first got on a bicycle, didn’t crash it? Most of us wrecked the bike, don’t we? Okay, so we do some funny things with the Holy Ghost. They’re babies, we’re babies, we’re learning. Could that be an amen? Amen, yes. What we need is that power. We need that power that changes people’s life in our services.
What is Holy Spirit baptism for, and what does he challenge the church to do? (John 3:30; 1 Corinthians 14:26; John 16:13)
Short answer: He concludes that the baptism of the Holy Ghost “is another spiritual miracle like salvation,” and that “you have to believe above your experience before you’re going to experience it.” He says it is “for a purpose,” not “for you to feel good,” and people need “power, freeing them from sin, Satan, and self.” He says “everything we do should be to build up the people of God,” and the church must “decrease and let God increase.” He says the Spirit “will drive you to the Word,” and “politicians need to hear the Word of God” too.
▶ 37:01 Okay, they are believers, they are baptized. Clearly the Holy Ghost baptism is another separate experience. Amen. Now, conclusion: “Clothed with power,” “receive power,” “witnesses unto Me.” The baptism of the Holy Ghost is another spiritual miracle like salvation. Okay, the Bible says that, I don’t care what you believe, the Bible say you have to preach above your experience before you’re going to experience it. You have to believe above your experience before you’re going to experience it. Don’t take your experience and bring the Bible down to your lack of experience. You speak the Bible and He will bring your experience up to what you’re speaking and believing. Separate from water baptism and salvation, we saw it clearly, didn’t we? There’s nothing to interpret, is there? Power to speak, smite your enemies, do miracles, and win souls. Do we need that in the church at Mountainside? Yes.
▶ 38:13 As John says, “I must decrease and He must increase.” How many of you realize we got to decrease and let God increase in this church? We got to get out of our opinions, we got to get out of our cultural antics, and we got to say, “God, arise,” if we want to see a visitation. And I guarantee you, when God starts moving, people will come. The Holy Ghost baptism is for a purpose, either in the assembly or individually, whether they’re filled, baptized, or the Spirit comes upon them. All right, it’s for a purpose. It’s not for you to feel good, and that’s not totally true. There are times of refreshing, you need to be refreshed, but not to where you have to roll around on the floor and shake and bake. And just that refreshing on the inner man, that strengthening in the inner man. You see, it’s for a purpose. He’s a Comforter, He’s a Spirit of Truth that teaches us all things.
▶ 39:17 So I challenge this church today. People need power, freeing them from sin, Satan, and self, and they need refreshing from God. This is what I liked about the Spirit-filled churches when I went to them. You could feel God. He would penetrate your being. He would convict you that you’re wrong. I was always wrong. I hadn’t given my heart to Christ yet. I believed in God, but I wasn’t about to serve Him because I had plans, man, I had plans. But that presence comes, you can feel Him. It’s like putting gas in your tank.
▶ 40:06 You know, we run out of gas, we run out of spiritual gas, we get refilled. It’s a refreshing, and people need that. And people need the Holy Ghost to convict them of sin, forgive them of sin, and cleanse them of sin, and encourage them. Remember, prophecy is for edification, exhortation, and comfort. People need that comfort, people need that building up. See, and Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14, “Let all things be done to edify.” Everything we do should be to build up the people of God, make them better people, and that’s what the ministry of the Holy Ghost is for.
▶ 40:53 We’ve got to get the word out. They told me over there they send us to go to politicians, politicians is of the devil, you know, and all this stuff. I go, man, this world is still believing the lies of Satan in the garden when Satan told Jesus that all these kingdoms are given to me and I can give them to who I want. He’s lying through his teeth. The Bible plainly tells us over and over that the nations, the kingdoms, belong to the Lord. Amen. He was lying. Politicians need to hear the Word of God.
▶ 41:27 Unbelievers need to hear the Word of God. Unlearned people, unlearned people, they’re believers but they’re unlearned, they need to hear this Word that God has given this church. And to whom much is given, much is required. Folks, we got to get this word out. We’ve got to buck up, we’ve got to get together and get this word out: printed, Internet, radio, TV, CD. You know, Christine and Mike were really good on a camera, I’ve noticed. They really have camera appeal. Me and Mr. Barnes, we don’t, you know, we don’t look so good on camera.
▶ 42:07 And remember, the Holy Ghost will guide you into all truth. When you really get filled with the Holy Ghost, you will not only know because of the feeling. He will not allow you to be lazy in the Word of God, because it’s the Word that set you free. He will drive you to the Word, He will drive you to church to learn the Word. You will have a motivational factor in your life.

About this transcript
This transcript comes from YouTube’s automatic English captions, which supply the timing and the words. Punctuation, capitalization and paragraphing were added by hand, and obvious caption errors were corrected; his wording was not rewritten. “[unclear]” marks a word or name that was not clear. Editor notes: the captions read “Acts 21:17” for the quotation of Joel in Acts 2:17 and “Acts 219” for Philip’s daughters, which is Acts 21:9; he cites John 3:16 loosely when he says “He that believes on Me shall not perish” in reference to John 7:38, and his Scripture readings are often paraphrases, so the NKJV text is shown separately. A garbled phrase near “it’s us [unclear], no more” (about 31:30) and a name near “How many would like to see [unclear] really get a word” (about 27:30) could not be made out and are marked [unclear]. In the Job 32:18 reading the captions give “el who,” which is Elihu in the verse. “Mountainside” is the church name as it appears in the captions (about 38:00). He also mentions two people by first name and “Mr. Barnes” in the transcript only. Select any time to jump to that moment on YouTube.
