Grace, Peace, Kings, & Priests - February 26, 2023: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Revelation 1 shows four things about the church: grace—being under the influence of Christ; peace—by submitting to God’s word; kings—reigning over sin, Satan and the flesh; and priests—ministering to God and sharing His touch with the world.
How does the service open?
Short answer: A reading from 2 Corinthians 3: the veil is taken away in Christ and we are changed from glory to glory.
▶ 0:00 All right we’d like to welcome you this morning good to have everybody online in the room we’re going to start with our scripture reading this morning uh miss state would you come up. Good morning we’re going to look at second Corinthians 3 uh this the exact scripture is verse 18 but we’re going to look a little bit before that before we get into it so starting at verse 13. It talks about Moses remember the veil that covered his face when he came down from mount Sinai with the tablets of stone the ten commandments and it said that he had that veil because the children of Israel couldn’t look at the glory that was on his face when he saw part of God and why why would that fail why couldn’t they and it gives us the answer it says because their hearts were hardened they had their hearts their minds were hardened they they were not qualified to see that glory.
▶ 1:18 And so then it goes down it says their minds were blinded. But then it says the veil is taken away in Christ but even to this day there is a veil but in verse 16 it says nevertheless when one turns to the Lord the veil is taken away hallelujah. When we turn our hearts to our God he lifts that veil that he takes that stony heart you remember in the new covenant he takes that stony heart out of us and gives us a heart of flesh and then in verse 17 now where the the Lord is the spirit and where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty the spirit of God has to be involved we must touch God’s spirit must touch us for that stony heart to be taken out and then it gets to verse 18 but we all with unfilled face and that’s why we had to talk about Moses because this is the the unveiling when the spirit of God comes he lifts that veil from our face and we beholding as in a mirror that word beholding doesn’t mean just like a quick glance or do you walk by and look in it means with eyes wide open intently
▶ 2:50 looking in to this reflection as in a mirror it says as in a mirror or a reflection and there it is up there. The glory of the Lord and are being transformed so as we look in that mirror we see the reflection of Christ looking back at us and that glory is about not only his supernatural power which we cannot attain to not only not in aura like in the artists how they portray the globe coming off Jesus but the glory here speaks of his character his name how he’s long-suffering and patient and kind and good and forgiving iniquity but not letting the guilty off either he’s a just God and so he reveals his character as we stare and what happens.
▶ 3:54 We are changed from glory to glory from character to character from his goodness to his faithfulness we become like him by the spirit of the Lord. So that’s why we’re here today we want to look at that beautiful presence and that person of Jesus amen amen hallelujah. Your glory.
Scripture in this part
2 Corinthians 3:14-18 (NKJV)
But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
— 2 Corinthians 3:14-18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 1:18What is sung?

▶ 28:36 You are. We. Lord of those. I worship. King of kings. Lord. Of lords. I worship. One more time king of kings. I worship. Iness.
What is grace?
Short answer: Four things about the church in Revelation 1—first, grace: being under the influence of Christ, and it should show.
▶ 29:58 We finer seats this morning. We’re going to look at four things about us. And found in Revelations at the beginning. Four things about the church. And it’s going to be very simple this morning very straightforward. God or John here writes to the churches and first thing he mentions his grace and peace and that he has made us kings and priests and we want to look into that this morning Revelations chapter 1 verse 4 scriptures say John writes to the churches and says grace to you and peace from him who is who was and who is to come from the seven spirits who are before his throne and so God John here is writing and encouraging the church saying grace to you but what is grace we want to look at a natural example that we have.
▶ 31:03 And it is there’s a term called being under the influence. And in our world in our society that term means someone has their mind affected or altered by alcohol and drugs they’re under the influence are you driving under the influence dui we’ve all heard that term but grace is being under the influence of Christ. Our hair our clothing our tattoos our piercings our speech our behavior shows. Whose influence we are under. Whether you have input from tv friends reading uh you know today’s youtube or whatever social media platform you’re on or even chat gbt ai.
▶ 32:04 Or you know using those things to hear what the famous person says or what the rich people say you know they’re successful I want to copy what they do we are influenced by all of these inputs. You got a lady up here who is cursing why because that’s what they do on tv that’s what they do in all the shows that’s what my friends do so I’m gonna do it uh you got a guy machine gun kelly’s got tattoos on his back tattoos weren’t a thing until recently why because famous people do it so we do it and we want to be cool uh you got this guy down here dressed in some kind of balloon outfit looks and uh you know of course he’s singing his songs about unholiness and uh. Blooding his life. Not lining up with the scriptures of course and then you got the guy pierce I don’t know how you could get a you know say you get a sinus infection or a runny nose I don’t know what you do there with that that’s that’s tough.
▶ 33:13 But you can see whose influence they’re under people want to be seen this guy dressed like that he wants to be seen he’s influenced by wanting to make money wanting to be seen he wants to be famous he wants the limelight so all that influence affects his behavior. And it’s affecting our world today Ezekiel 30 Ezekiel 36 26 says that God will give us a new heart and put his spirit in us give us a new spirit and that he’ll cause us to walk in. His ways his statutes and keep his judgments and do them. And so what God is promising here is that we can be under the influence of a new heart and a new spirit that’s what that means causing us to walk in his ways we are under the influence of that new heart and the new spirit that God has given us and so God is asking the world and he’s asking us are we under the influence of the world drugs and alcohol the world’s message the world’s.
▶ 34:28 Opinions and show. Or are we. Influenced by God because we’re going to be influenced by someone right and it is better much better it is way better to be influenced by Christ and the Bible. God’s influence affects our dress it affects our speech it affects our behavior and everything about us. Romans chapter 6 verse 14 says for sin shall not have dominion over you for you are not under law but under grace. So when you say you’re under grace you’re saying you’re under the influence of Christ.
▶ 35:21 And it should show just like someone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs it shows. Somebody who’s under the influence of Christ it should show. Amen so John is right in the churches and he says grace to the church so we have God’s grace. We have a choice whether or not we’re going to be under its influence. I. Encourage you today don’t be under the influence of the world John Joseph in chapter 39 verse 1 gives us a good example he is a slave. The scriptures say that the Lord was with him he was in the house of potiphar and in the house he’s around people that are not Christians he’s around he’s got to work around people that are not Christians he’s got to be around the false gods he’s got to be around people that don’t follow God and so he has some decisions to make.
▶ 36:30 Ah you know we all have work to do right but are we under the influence of those who do not follow God are we under the influence of God he was made over a seer of his house can you imagine that a slave being made over overseer of someone’s house he was handsome in form in appearance you see it affects your outward look it affects your appearance potiphar’s wife said to him lie with me have sex with me uh. And you got to remember during this time Moses’s ten commandments weren’t there. Amen. So Joseph couldn’t be like wait a second I need to check my index here the ten commandments oh no I can’t do that it’s against the why he was already under the influence of God and that’s what Paul is saying even though Joseph didn’t have the law he was under the influence of the grace of God.
Scripture in this part
Revelation 1:4-6 (NKJV)
John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
— Revelation 1:4-6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 29:58Whose influence was Rehoboam under?
Short answer: His friends’—he rejected the elders’ advice and made the yoke heavier.
▶ 37:46 Even back then. And we need to be under God’s grace today. Rehoboam in 1 Kings 12:1. This is an example of the opposite the whole assembly of Israel said your father made our yoke heavy therefore lighten our yoke lighten our burden because they were serving the king and Solomon had them building a temple he had them building him a house and his wife the house and who else wants a house. And I I didn’t have time to research it but I’m thinking in my head what is why are these people still working if the temple’s built what’s going on. What is Solomon doing.
▶ 38:38 Your father put on us a heavy yoke and if you lighten the burden we will serve you so Rehoboam does a smart thing and he goes to the wise elders and he says uh what do you guys say and they come back with he says the elder said if you will be a servant to these people today and serve them and speak good words to them they will be your servants forever. And then he rejected the advice of the elders and he consulted his friends his people that were his age that he grew up with oh my these guys are. They the old people they don’t know what’s going on they’re old they need to go home and die. Now get out of here.
▶ 39:34 And so he listens to his friends he listens to the young people. And he responds to the other tribes. That weren’t Judah and says my little finger will be thicker than my father’s ways my my my father had you know he put a load on you I’m gonna put double triple four more times than what my dad put on you. I will add to your yoke my father chastise you with whips I will chastise you with scourges so he’s going to take everything up a notch he’s going to add more to the to the work and he’s gonna whip them with with stuff that’s gonna rip their flesh not just you know leather like hits your flesh it’s gonna rip the flesh off like it did for Jesus scourgeons awful.
▶ 40:28 What a horrible advice he was given. And he listened to that. And so God whose influence was Rehoboam under he was under the influence of his friends he was under the influence of the young men that he thought I don’t know what he thought. I don’t know why you’d think oh this is good advice. I mean did Rehoboam have any projects that he needed to have done they didn’t even say to do what doesn’t even make sense. And so we have to be careful you see here it can exploding that that pressure that the world puts on us right we have to have enough strength in us to to combat the pressure that is coming from the outside the scriptures say in Romans 12 verse 2 do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is good and acceptable and the perfect will of God Jesus also prayed in the garden of gethsemane in John 17:15.
▶ 41:49 I pray that you not take them out of the world but that you should keep them from the evil one they are not of the world just as I am not of the world and so we’ve got to remember whose influence we are under. And whose pressure we are caving into I’d want rather to cave in to Jesus Christ amen. Not the world. Revelations chapter 1 verse 4 going back to that scripture and he says grace and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come Galatians chapter 5 17 we know this scripture very well the flesh lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh and they are contrary to one another and so God or John is right in the churches and he’s saying God has given you peace he’s going to help you overcome the war that you have going on between your flesh and between the spirit and you’re going to win.
Scripture in this part
1 Kings 12:1-14 (NKJV)
And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king. So it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (he was still in Egypt, for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon and had been dwelling in Egypt), that they sent and called him. Then Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, “Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.” So he said to them, “Depart for three days, then come back to me.” And the people departed. Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who stood before his father Solomon while he still lived, and he said, “How do you advise me to answer these people?” And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him. And he said to them, “What advice do you give? How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?” Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you should speak to this people who have spoken to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us’—thus you shall say to them: ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist! And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!’ ” So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had directed, saying, “Come back to me the third day.” Then the king answered the people roughly, and rejected the advice which the elders had given him; and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!”
— 1 Kings 12:1-14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 37:46John 17:15-16 (NKJV)
I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
— John 17:15-16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 41:49How do we have peace?
Short answer: Submit to God’s word and abstain from fleshly lusts that war against the soul.
▶ 42:58 We have a daily fight. And we have to submit to God’s word don’t we don’t need to take all this influence from the world and be like oh is that right is that right is this right is it you know just submit to God surrender yourself to his word to what you know truth is. And take it easy say are you gonna no I’m not gonna do that I’ve got peace uh I need that in my life that’s just going to bring problems. You know if somebody wants to put you in a sketchy situation no that’s going to bring an issue right. My flesh is gonna be warring against my spirit my spirit wants to do what is right I want to be at peace and God has given us peace.
▶ 43:52 1 Peter 2:11. I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims abstain from fleshy lusts which war against the soul so you don’t want to put yourself in a place where your spirit and your flesh are at war with one another amen and God has given us the enabled us to have peace having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles when they speak against you as evildoers they by your good works may glorify God in the day of visitation. So God’s peace here settles these conflicts the conflicts that we have with our flesh God wants to give you the strength to overcome your flesh he wants to give you the strength to win amen and have peace when we do when we humble ourselves and submit to him we have peace and it’s true if you keep yourself from sexual immorality I’m telling you you’re going to save yourself a lot of hurt and you’re going to be at peace if you keep yourself from drugs and alcohol you’re going to be at peace.
▶ 45:05 If you keep yourself from situations where people are putting pressure on you to do things that are wrong you’re at peace. Amen you don’t have to live under pressure. You don’t have to live warring all the time put yourself in a good situation. You know focus right now if you’re young focus on your future how are you going to uh how are you going to become independent in the next coming years. Focus on that and that then when you get down to point you focus on the next thing. But you can be at peace. Amen. Galatians 3:28 there is neither Jew nor greek there is neither slave nor free there is neither male nor female for all are one in Christ and if you are Christ then your Abraham sees and heirs according to the promise I don’t need to fight with uh.
▶ 46:13 The Jews I don’t need to fight with Gentiles I don’t need to fight with men or women because they’re women I don’t need to fight with those who are free or not free those who are rich or those who are poor we don’t need to fight. We surrender ourselves to Christ we work together for the goal I don’t need to come in and fight with Miss Woods because she’s a woman. And you know all this stuff going on about women are the best and the greatest you know you know there’s neither of June or Gentile there’s neither male or female there’s no need to be at war about this. And when you come into church that means that men don’t dominate women. You don’t be at war with women we’re God’s people. And we shouldn’t be at war with one another.
▶ 47:13 You know mistake brought a great word this morning Miss Woods prepared them the the songs this morning we got to enter in and touch God and anybody else that has it seeks God whether you’re male or female Jew or gentle slave or free rich or poor come in and do it. We’re not at war. We’re only at war with the kingdom of darkness so whether you are a woman a man whether you’re Jew or Gentile if you bring in the kingdom of darkness get out of here do not come up here and preach that junk. Amen. Amen it’s not about the color of your skin it’s not about male or female it is about truth and right.
Scripture in this part
1 Peter 2:11 (NKJV)
Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
— 1 Peter 2:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 43:52How are we kings?
Short answer: We reign over sin, Satan and our flesh, with dominion given from the beginning.
▶ 48:12 Revelation 1:6 moving on to the third thing God has made us kings. Wow. He’s made us kings not just heirs not just one day he’s made us kings. Now. Wow isn’t this this is the Revelation of the church right here where the Revelation this is the book of Revelation it’s the Revelation of the church he’s right in the churches he’s made us kings. And we need to act like that not that we are lording over one another but that we are reigning over the kingdom of darkness that we are reigning over sin that we are reigning over the kingdom of darkness even though on the outside it may seem like maybe your church is underground.
▶ 49:04 Maybe the world is not acknowledging and persecuting it doesn’t matter your kings because you reign over the kingdom of darkness because you’re reigning over your flesh you’re reigning over sin that is a king. Matthew 16:18. I say to you you are Peter on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it the church is meant to prevail against the kingdom of darkness the church. The gates of hell are not going to prevail against the church. Why is it happening today God says that we are kings God says that we can reign we don’t have to let it be that way you don’t have to let it be that way in your life.
▶ 49:58 You are part of the church don’t let Satan. Reign over you. Revelation 20:6 he repeats it later in Revelations. At the end here but they shall be priests of God and they shall reign with him a thousand years but this also puts in a timetable here it says blessed and holy is he who ha who has part in the first resurrection the first resurrection is Jesus Christ rising from the dead and people being raised after he was raised. Over such the second death has no power you see when we die we stand before God hell in the lake of fire has no power over us why because we have surrendered to Jesus Christ to his resurrection his cross amen and we can reign with Christ.
▶ 51:05 Are we reigning are we reigning over sin Satan and our flesh. Famous people leaders all throughout the world in our own country they are not reigning over. The kingdom of darkness. And if we are not reigning what are we offering the world Revelations chapter 5 verse 9 you are worthy to take the scroll open its seals you were slain and have redeemed us to God by your blood that’s Jesus Christ every tribe tongue and people and nation. Again here it is no matter what your skin color is tribe tongue people language. Tongue and nation whoever you’re whatever your skin color is doesn’t matter he has made us kings.
▶ 52:04 And we shall reign on the earth. Genesis 6:1 26 going back to the beginning Adam and Eve when God created Adam and Eve he said to them let them have dominion over the fish of the sea over the birds of the air the cattle over the earth over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth over the whole earth. We have dominion and power over the earth why do we let things like alcohol and drugs run and rule our lives. We’re supposed to have power over those things. Romans 8:37 and all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us so we get the picture here right we God John writes to the church and says that we are kings we can reign and we need to act that way and we need to possess that not just talk about it not just read the scripture but possess that in your life amen.
Scripture in this part
Revelation 20:6 (NKJV)
Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
— Revelation 20:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 49:58Genesis 1:26 (NKJV)
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
— Genesis 1:26 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 52:04How are we priests?
Short answer: We minister to God, touch His presence and share it with the world.
▶ 53:17 Revelation 1:6 going back to that scripture he has made us kings and priests to his God and father. So the fourth and last thing here is that God has made us priests as we mentioned today God has made us a priest and and that song was so uh indicative of what a priest does we bring the sacrifice of praise you can bring a sacrifice of praise you can get on your knees and pray you can fast you worship you get the Bible out you read it we assemble together we are priests. That veil has been torn and ripped we can come into the holy of holies we don’t need to put on the urum and the thumb and and uh all this stuff we can come in with the tools that God has given us prayer praise the word of God fasting.
▶ 54:21 And we can minister to him and touched him and be influenced by him so we can take that influence and that touch and share it with the world. Are you a priest today it is God’s promise to you it is God’s promise to the church that you’re not just someone who’s forgiven that you’re not just somebody who’s waiting for waiting to die you’re not just somebody who’s waiting for the second coming no you’re a king you’re a priest. You have grace in a under the influence of Christ. You can have peace. Psalms 141 let my prayer be set before you as incense the lifting out of my hands as the evening sacrifice I encourage you this morning if you’re ashamed if you’re afraid to worship God to exercise these these simple things I encourage you you have been made a priests.
▶ 55:28 And these things exercise what a priest does and when the priest ministers to God he has access to touch the presence of God to hear the living word and that will change your life. Mark 9:28. There was a person who had a demon and the disciples were asking how come we cannot cast them out and Jesus didn’t say because you’re not a priest he didn’t say because you you know it has to be me he didn’t he didn’t say that he said this doesn’t come out by except by prayer and fasting you got to exercise what a priest does.
▶ 56:22 And it’s not that a priest casts out the Devil but God comes through prayer and fasting through that operation and ministering and he beats back the kingdom of darkness and there you go again that’s something else as priests you have to do for your own life and for others in this case it was for someone else but what about your own life you’ve got to beat back to the kingdom of darkness you that’s why we pray that’s why we fast. First Chronicles 16 4. He appointed some of Levites the to minister before the ark of the Lord to commemorate to thank and to praise the Lord God of Israel so here even in the Old Testament they are doing the real thing they are thanking and praising God which is really what God is pointing to in the the altar of incense that’s really what God is pointing to in Moses’s tabernacle these real things that we do.
▶ 57:30 They are doing here these priests and so God is asking us are we acting like priests in our daily lives are we acting like priests when we come to church we have that right. Can you imagine if you have a you know you have a uniform that you could put on you have all these tools available to you and you never use them. You walk into onto the battlefield and you go oh I left all my gear back at the place. You’d never do that. And it’s the same way in God we come to God’s house are we are we grabbing the gear and using the tools God has given us. The promises he’s made to us.
Scripture in this part
Revelation 1:6 (NKJV)
and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
— Revelation 1:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 53:17Why were the priests angry with Jesus?
Short answer: Others were doing what the priests should have been doing—God is looking for people, not just a leader.
▶ 58:24 Foreign. Matthew 21:13. We’re going to look at this quick little example the priests were upset of course they’re always upset anything about Jesus what did Jesus say I’m upset about that. Jesus comes and he overturns the tables he says my house shall be called a house of prayer but you have made it a den of thieves and so the priests. The leaders they allowed this stuff to go on and they should have known not to allow it right. You know in the temple you got people making money off of people uh kind of charging over charging them that’s not supposed to be in the house of God no well I don’t bring you in so you can pay for somebody’s book oh mrs daigle is up here she’s trying to sell her book today and uh she’s gonna give it we’re gonna upcharge that right now.
▶ 59:27 Do you have a book out mrs dale. No I’m not here to sell something I’m here we’re here because we’re priests we’re coming in to meet with Jesus Christ amen. We’re here to come into the holy of holies and to touch the power and the presence and the living word of God. I might bite my tongue in a few years who knows. Verse 14 the blind and the lame came to him in the temple and he healed them. When the chief priests saw the wonderful things he did the children crying out in the temple saying hosanna the son of David they were angry indignant they were outraged. And here.
▶ 1:00:24 These people were doing something that the priest should have been doing. And the priest wasn’t doing there they weren’t doing their job. The priests are the ones like we learned in Chronicles they were the ones supposed to come and commemorate and give thanks and praise to God where are they at Jesus is here he’s gone why aren’t they exalting him oh if you’re not going to do it they’ll do it. And they’re mad about they’re angry and outraged. And they’re saying do you hear what they’re saying. And Jesus said yes have you never read out of the mouth of babes and sucklings nursing infants I have perfected praise.
▶ 1:01:19 And so these priests all of a sudden got really mad because their job was getting they were losing their job security. God doesn’t need the leader. He’s looking for people that will respond than humble themselves and praise God and he has equipped every one of us in this room to be priests. You don’t have to ask a pastor to pray for you you don’t have to ask someone you know it’s Bible to have someone pray for but remember you are a priest. You have access to the same thing they have access to you have access to the same thing the pastor has access to you are a priest.
