Grace, Faith, and Christ Alone—January 9, 2022: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Jesus never said we are saved by grace alone, faith alone or Christ alone—the Reformers did. Believers are not condemned, but those who love darkness are; he who does the truth comes to the light, and all are judged by works. Salvation is a bundle with Jesus as the essential ingredient.
How does the service open?
Short answer: Worship of thanks for the blood of Jesus that washes white and brings us from darkness into glorious light.

▶ 23:11 Oh. The blood of Jesus. It. Washes wash is white as snow one last time. He washes. White. Thank you Jesus thank you.
What did Jesus not say?
Short answer: That we are saved by grace alone, faith alone or Christ alone—neither did Paul; the Reformers said it 500 years ago.
▶ 24:07 Jesus. I’d like to invite Pastor Kincer up share God’s word this morning again you may find your seats in his presence it’s good to be in the house of the Lord. Well let’s jump right into the word. We’re going to discuss again. What Jesus did not say. Jesus did not say. We are saved by grace alone. Jesus did not say we are saved by faith alone. Jesus did not say we are saved by Christ alone.
Why test the Reformers by the Bible?
Short answer: They also accepted slavery and condoned the treatment of Indians; we follow Jesus and the apostles.
▶ 25:01 Neither does the Bible say this anywhere. And neither did Paul say this. The. Protestant reformation reformers. Luther. Calvin Knox Smith. Those guys said it. 500 years ago. And their followers are still saying it after 500 years. And you got to remember that our protestant. Reformation reformers weren’t. Exactly. Moses. Or the apostle Paul. These guys. Mistreated Jews they persecuted Jews. For not believing in Christ they persecuted each other other protestants that didn’t believe the way they believed they persecuted catholics like the catholics had persecuted them.
▶ 26:05 They also accepted. Slavery they also condone the treatment of indians in America. Uh like America did. So again we are supposed to follow the teachings of Jesus. And the teachings of the apostles. And we’re thankful for the protestant reformation leaders. But we got to go to the Bible for truth. And to Christ for truth. So Jesus did not say grace alone faith alone or Christ alone alone means without any help without any other thing involved all by itself. Neither did Jesus say you’re saved not of works.
Is Paul the problem?
Short answer: No—Peter warned the unlearned and unstable twist Paul’s hard teachings.
▶ 26:58 Paul said that in Ephesians 2:8. Not of works but you’ve got to remember Peter said that the unstable and the unlearned. Twist distort Paul’s teachings that are hard to understand to their own destruction. So it’s not Paul’s teaching that’s the problem it’s the people that want to take his teaching and apply it to the way they feel is best for them or their belief. So let’s take a look at what Jesus did say. About eternal life and salvation from the lake of fire now if you’ll bear with me in my spiritual imagination here there’s a lake there and I put fire in it and this is what it’s all about.
Scripture in this part
Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
— Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 26:58 (quoted; reference not named in the message)2 Peter 3:16 (NKJV)
as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
— 2 Peter 3:16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 26:58 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What did Jesus say first?
Short answer: Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life and is not condemned.
▶ 27:55 Getting saved from sin and the punishment of sin in the lake of fire for eternity. And this is what Jesus said. Right from his mouth about this. All who believe on Jesus shall not perish but have eternal life John 3:15. John 3:16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting. Life Jesus said that. So if we believe and put our trust in him and put our faith in him we are not going to perish in the lake of fire he goes on to say.
▶ 28:48 They that believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ are not condemned they are not punished going to be punished in that lake of fire that is statement number one now the Bible says don’t take away from the word and don’t add to the world. All right Jesus isn’t finished talking here. Er most people stop right here John 3:15 and 16 and 17. They stop but Jesus isn’t finished. And if we stop we’re going to be taken away from the word. Jesus goes on to say in verse 18. Men humans that believe not in Jesus’s name are condemned.
Scripture in this part
John 3:15-18 (NKJV)
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
— John 3:15-18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 27:55 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Who is condemned?
Short answer: Those who hear the gospel and reject Him; if the church took this seriously it would be more urgent.
▶ 29:45 They are going to perish in that lake of fire. All mankind who don’t believe in the name of Jesus Christ if they heard the gospel and heard about Jesus and they reject him they are going to be condemned and folks. If the church world really took that statement seriously we would be more urgently preaching the gospel in my humble opinion. You don’t want to see anybody spend eternity in the lake of fire. And if we really don’t want that then we are going to respond and get that message out and let them know there’s a way of escape am I right from the lake of fire by believing in Jesus. And then he says this powerful statement this is the condemnation. Now he’s going to tell us why they are condemned.
Scripture in this part
John 3:18 (NKJV)
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
— John 3:18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 29:45 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What is the condemnation?
Short answer: Men love darkness and hate the light, and won’t come to Jesus lest their deeds be reproved.
▶ 30:41 This is the condemnation Jesus said they love darkness. They take pleasure in darkness. They don’t take pleasure in the light they take pleasure in darkness. And. They hate the light. They dislike Jesus. Who is the light they dislike his word who is the light they do not want Jesus and the Bible telling them what they can do and what they cannot do. This is the condemnation Jesus said it’s not just unbelief some people believe but they still love the pleasures of darkness some people believe and they dislike Jesus telling them what to do.
▶ 31:38 Could that be an amen. So this is the condemnation that’s verse 18. Jesus is the light Jesus and his word is the light in verse 19 Jesus continues and he says. They won’t come to the light these humans. Will not come to the light they may believe in Jesus but they won’t come to Jesus. Through prayer through worship through fasting through assembling together in the house of God where we are supposed to be encouraging people to love God and love one another and to do good works they won’t come to Jesus. They just believe in him. They won’t come to the light.
▶ 32:36 Where the light can reprove their works. See they don’t want to meet with Jesus. Because if they do Jesus will show them the error so they can change it they don’t want to change. Amen. Isn’t that what Jesus is saying. And they do these things they love darkness. They dislike the light and they won’t come to the light because their works are evil and that is. The reason they are sentenced to condemnation. In Titus chapter 1 verse 16. They profess to know me see these people are saying they believe in God they believe in you just like the Sadducees and the Pharisees they believed in God.
Scripture in this part
John 3:19-20 (NKJV)
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
— John 3:19-20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 30:41 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Can you profess God and deny Him?
Short answer: Yes—they profess to know Him but in works deny Him; at the judgment all are judged by their works.
▶ 33:38 But they didn’t do what God said to do. They didn’t obey God. They professed to know me but in works. Say the word works works. They deny me. It’s easy to say I believe in God it’s another thing to obey him and live for him okay in Revelations 20 verse 12. The great judgment day the sea gave up the dead the graves are open everybody comes out of the graves all this dust of human comes back together and they’ve got an immortal body now a body that can’t die and they’re standing before Christ.
▶ 34:30 Giving account of himself and it says. He judged them all by their works say the word works. Not their belief not their faith but their works. See. Now. As you see these stones are taking a side trip. All right. But this stone is taking a trip to get to the other side of the lake. Eternal life. And we find in verse 21 Jesus is still talking about everlasting life.
Scripture in this part
Titus 1:16 (NKJV)
They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.
— Titus 1:16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 33:38 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Revelation 20:12-13 (NKJV)
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
— Revelation 20:12-13 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 33:38 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What must be added to belief?
Short answer: He who does the truth comes to the light; knowing truth sets you free.
▶ 35:24 And he says this he who does the truth. All. I not only believe in God I not only believe in the name of Jesus. But I do his truth I obey. His word. And when you do something you’re working. You see they seek the word of God you shall know the truth and the truth shall what set you free follow on to know the Lord so we’ve got to continue so I can’t just stop at at belief alone. Christ didn’t say to just believe and stop there that’s it that’s all there is to it.
Scripture in this part
John 3:21 (NKJV)
But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
— John 3:21 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 35:24 (quoted; reference not named in the message)John 8:32 (NKJV)
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
— John 8:32 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 35:24 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Where does the power to obey come from?
Short answer: To as many as receive Him He gives power to become sons of God.
▶ 36:17 He said. To do truth. Do truth. Hallelujah. So there’s two things here so belief in Christ is not alone. You got to add doing truth to that could that be an amen the third thing is. These believers who believe in the name of Jesus and his death burial and resurrection and his birth and they do the truth they also come to the light they come to Jesus they enter into his gates with thanksgiving they enter into his courts with praise they come to him kneeling down in prayer they come to him by opening that Bible and reading it they come to him.
▶ 37:09 And he comes to them. And remember Jesus said as to as many as receive me to them I give them power. To be sons of God. You see there’s a reception there’s a recipi uh receiving of power. To do God’s truth. It’s not we just go through life believing it’s we possess. The power. To obey truth and to seek truth could that be an amen. And that’s what I’ve experienced in my own life the power. It makes a big difference. Okay. And they come to the light that they’re works done in God. Say the word works again works don’t be afraid of that word works Jesus said it over and over here that works are part of the plan of salvation.
Scripture in this part
John 1:12 (NKJV)
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
— John 1:12 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 37:09 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What do we add to faith?
Short answer: Jesus is the essential part; add to faith goodness, knowledge and the rest.
▶ 38:14 Amen. Now it’s not the essential part the essential part is right here. Jesus. Without that the rest is worthless. But works are part of a church and so. Their works are done in God and they’re clearly seen and ii Peter 1:5 says add to your faith goodness add to goodness. Knowledge add to knowledge patience add the patience self-control add to self-control godliness add to godliness brotherly love love one another and add to that. Loving God hallelujah so it is a progressive thing. And it’s a possessive thing I can possess patience I can possess self-control I can possess godliness.
Scripture in this part
2 Peter 1:5-7 (NKJV)
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
— 2 Peter 1:5-7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 38:14 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How does Jesus reward?
Short answer: According to works, and the resurrection of life or of condemnation follows.
▶ 39:11 And because of the possessing it’s going to come out of me I’m going I’m going to apply it in my life I’m going to do truth could that be an amen. Hallelujah so Jesus didn’t say you’re saved by grace alone he didn’t say you’re saved by faith alone he didn’t say you’re saved by Christ alone he didn’t say you’re saved without works. Our. Restoration reformers. Our protestant reformers said these things we’ve got to go on. And let God bring the Bible to us it doesn’t matter what Calvin said it matters what Jesus said that could that be an amen people spend hours reading books on Calvin I’ve read his books they’re boring. The Bible isn’t boring hallelujah. So.
▶ 40:07 The son of man Jesus said. Shall come in the glory of his father. And his angels and then he shall reward everyone according to his belief. Now according to God’s grace. No according to his works say the word works. He applied truth just just remember the applied truth is work you’re doing something. Also Jesus said in John 5:29 all in the graves. Shall come forth. They that have done good good works unto the resurrection of life eternal life in a new heaven and a new earth with Jesus Christ and they that have done evil.
▶ 41:02 Bad works. Unto the resurrection of damnation eternity in the lake of fire. Hallelujah this is the condemnation Jesus said they loved. Darkness and took pleasure in darkness. They hated they disliked the light they disliked Jesus and his word. They wouldn’t come to Jesus. And their works are evil. And that is the final deciding factor. Is the works are evil that’s the condemnation Jesus said this is the condemnation the works are evil it doesn’t matter if they believe on me or not. Now.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 16:27 (NKJV)
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.
— Matthew 16:27 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 40:07 (quoted; reference not named in the message)John 5:28-29 (NKJV)
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
— John 5:28-29 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 41:02 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Why is salvation a bundle?
Short answer: Eternal life is a bundle with Jesus—His birth, death and resurrection—as the one ingredient you can’t leave out.
▶ 41:56 As. Mike comes to lead us in prayer and communion this morning. Let’s look at salvation again as a bundle you’ve heard of the bundle you know you get the internet you get the phone uh you get uh. You know cable you get this and that everything gets cheaper as you get the bundle. Well salvation is a bundle it’s a package. And. So is the lake of fire it is a package the eternal lake of fire is a bundle with evil works. The condemning item. Evil works is the main item the condemning item.
▶ 42:51 Unbelief. You’re gonna if you heard the gospel and you reject it the gospel of Jesus Christ not the gospel of protestant reformation reformers the gospel of Jesus Christ and you reject him in his name. And you dislike. The Bible and Jesus telling you what to do and what you can’t do and you won’t come to Jesus. That is the main thing you won’t come to Christ you may believe in him but you won’t come to him. And you do evil works. That is the condemning idol item is evil works. You may love the darkness. But your works are evil. People love. Save by grace alone save by faith alone because there’s no accountability.
▶ 43:50 I can do what I want. No accountability. But I submit to you this morning that eternal life is also a bundle. And salvation from sin is a bundle with Jesus Christ being the necessary ingredient. The one ingredient that you cannot leave out is Jesus Christ in his birth death and resurrection. To reconcile people to God forgive us of our sin and give us eternal life. So we must believe on Jesus. But we also must come to Jesus. And we also must do the truth. Jesus said God’s word is truth and we’ve gotta do works clearly seeing that they’re done in God not my works not the Devil’s works not evil works but works that are done in God not done for people to see but works that are done in God because God told me to do it I’m applying it to my life I’m applying it to my life.
How does the service close?
Short answer: Unto Thee O Lord, prayer for the sick, the pandemic and other churches, and Our God Is an Awesome God.
▶ 45:00 So as Mike leads us in prayer this morning I challenge you. As we sing this song unto thee Jesus do I come I’m going to take you up on your offer. To leave not leave faith but add to my faith add to my belief coming to you and I’m going to come with a heart of thanksgiving. I’m not going to come fearfully thinking you’re going to reject me because you said he you would reject no one that would come to you as many as come into me I will not reject them you can come with a heart of thanksgiving if nothing else that he will accept you. And he will give you life through his blood. And he will give you peace that the world cannot give. And he will give you joy. Precious joy through having a relationship and knowing him let’s take this opportunity.
