God With Us - June 25, 2023: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Saul was anointed and had God with him, but he rejected God’s word and the Spirit departed. David had no crown or throne, yet God was with him, and when he inquired of the Lord he prevailed. Jesus promises to be with us always—make Him a priority and don’t exchange His presence for anything.

And he has sinned his life and he has done things that are unthinkable. But the truth is God has sent a messenger to speak one to redeem the souls from destruction.
▶ 36:58 And when he turns and he says I’ve done these things and I repent of my sins then God comes and he touches him like he touched Naaman he came up he didn’t want to dip himself in the river the dirty Jordan river he was high-minded and he didn’t want to humble himself but when he did and he went into that river he came up out of it in his flesh was like that of a child God wants to restore God wants to renew whatever it is in your life confess it humble yourselves and God will refresh and he will bring you into the light of life he will extend your days he will bless you abundantly he will bless your children they will be priests and kings in the kingdom coming oh Jesus you’re the you’re the messenger we’re the messenger you’re the redeemer Lord.

More than not the kingdom of the darkness the Lord has their way Jesus exposed to sin Lord Jesus change the minds and the hearts of adults God oh Lord it’s time time for us Lord to start caring it’s time for us to start caring about what is right what is wrong Jesus Jesus.

Short answer: “Behold He comes” and “God is so good.”
▶ 42:29 Behold he comes. Riding on the clouds. Shining like the sun at the tropical. Lift your voice it’s a year of jubilee. Science hill. Salvation. Comes the holy. Arms he’s riding on the clouds he’s shining like the sun had the trumpet call. Salvation.

There is no God but Jesus there’s his no God but Jesus there is no God Jesus there is no God that Jesus there is no God but Jesus there is no God but Jesus there is no God for Jesus.

What made David great?
Short answer: God was with him wherever he went.
▶ 47:46 It’s good to be in God’s house this morning. Amen I want to thank those online for joining us those in the room. I’ll try to keep it short just get right to the point. First Corinthians chapter 13 verse 3. Though I must bestow all my goods to feed the poor though I give my body to be burned but have not love it profits me nothing. First John 4:16 says God is love and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him and so it’s Christ it’s God who makes the difference and are we offering Christ to the world if we’re offering Christ to the world that we got to have God in us we got to have him with us and second Samuel chapter 7 verse 8 it says thus says the Lord of hosts I took you from the sheepfold from following the sheep to be ruler over my people over Israel I have been say it with me I have been with you what does it say wherever.
▶ 49:02 You have gone I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you and have made you a great name. And so this morning we have to be reminded the world has a lot to offer they have money they can feed the poor they can give people a lot of things possessions and all kinds of goodies but they don’t have Christ. And it is Jesus Christ. Who was with David through the wilderness he was with David before Goliath he was with David before the sheep he was with David as king he was with David as he was being pursued by Saul he was with David.
▶ 49:54 And how many you know it’s important to have God with you. David was Saul’s armor bearer David played the harp for Saul he stood before Goliath he became captain of Saul’s army but Saul attempted to assassinate him as I said earlier Saul pursued him to kill him he had to live in a wilderness he didn’t have a home he had to go live out in the wilderness he didn’t have a home to go to. And his wife stayed with him somehow. His wife stayed with him was out there in the wilderness making stuff in the wilderness they all had wives these men it’s amazing.
Scripture in this part
2 Samuel 7:9 (NKJV)
And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.
— 2 Samuel 7:9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 49:02What happened to Saul?
Short answer: God was with him, but he rejected God’s word, the Spirit departed, and he turned to a medium.
▶ 50:48 We look at Saul in 1 Samuel 10:1 he was anointed king. Verse 6 same chapter the spirit of the Lord will come upon you you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man and we’re reminded of the new covenant God promised us us he promises people he promises everyone throughout the world hey I’ll give you a new heart I will put my spirit in you and I will cause you to walk in my statutes in my footsteps in my ways that’s grace. And so God comes and he puts his spirit on Saul and Saul prophesies. And he’s turned into another man and when he got back he was crowned king and he led Israel to defeat the enemy in jabesh gilead.
▶ 51:43 And it says in the next scripture here for God is what with you so Saul had God with him he had God. But in 1 Samuel 15:23 as many of us know we know this story Saul rejected the word of the Lord. And because of that God rejects Samuel says God has rejected you from being king. And when you look up Saul you see Saul oh the story people will say oh God rejected Saul as king no no no no Saul rejected God. We want to put the blame on God but the blame here is on Saul. Saul rejected the word of the Lord Saul rejected God he had God with him he had the spirit of God on him and he rejected God.
▶ 52:47 The spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and a distressing spirit came from the Lord and troubled him. Now. Saul. Could have turned things around right then at that day he could have gotten in right relationship with God. You realize that all God said was you cannot be king so all Saul had to do was say okay I’m not going to be king I stepped down I resigned. But Saul didn’t want to let go he didn’t want to let go of his position he didn’t want to let go of his crown he didn’t want to let go his army he didn’t want influence to let go of his you know is God with me I don’t really care I got the people the people are with me. And you never know what God could have done with Saul you know he you know if God can remove him from being king he could restore him to being king but Saul never responded in that way.
▶ 53:54 And Saul who once had God with him no longer had God with him he exchanged God for all of these things he exchanged God for his armor his army his crown his position and more. And what are we taking in exchange for God having God with you are you exchanging something. For having God with you. That distressing spirit caused him to uh he wanted to he attacked his son jonathan his own son he threw his spear at him. He told he commanded in edomite. To kill the priests.
▶ 54:47 Killed his own people killed people in the church this guy lost his mind. He chased after David to kill him he chased after the Lord’s anointed David he knew that that was special he was jealous of David and he wanted to kill him. First Samuel 28 verse 6 he inquired of the Lord the Lord did not answer him. The Lord did not answer him. How many you know I don’t want to be in that place. A place where I have given up you know Saul just come he’s in a bad situation he’s in a tight spot so he says oh I know what to do I’m going to acquire the Lord get an answer from God oh Lord I know you rejected me and everything I know I rejected you but hey I got this question. No God’s not going to answer.
▶ 55:40 And Saul said okay I’m not going to find an answer from God I’ll go to some other solution find me a medium find me that I may go to her and inquire her and that’s what we do today we don’t get an answer from God so we go somewhere else. Instead of trying to get back in right relationship with God amen. Just because someone remains in authority does not mean that we should follow their example. A bad pastor is a bad pastor a bad government leader is a bad government leader a bad friend a bad parent you we don’t follow them just because they’re in charge God is merciful to all of us that’s the problem we want God to hurt our enemies now you know that’s my enemy heard him now take care of him now but that’s not how God works that’s not how he worked with Saul he gave Saul time to change to repent and to turn from sin and he did not.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 10:1-7 (NKJV)
Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “Is it not because the LORD has anointed you commander over His inheritance? When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. And now your father has ceased caring about the donkeys and is worrying about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?” ’ Then you shall go on forward from there and come to the terebinth tree of Tabor. There three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive from their hands. After that you shall come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is. And it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with a stringed instrument, a tambourine, a flute, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying. Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. And let it be, when these signs come to you, that you do as the occasion demands; for God is with you.
— 1 Samuel 10:1-7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 50:481 Samuel 15:23 (NKJV)
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.”
— 1 Samuel 15:23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 51:431 Samuel 16:14 (NKJV)
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him.
— 1 Samuel 16:14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 52:471 Samuel 28:7 (NKJV)
Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.”
— 1 Samuel 28:7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 55:40What did David have in the wilderness?
Short answer: No crown, throne or home—but God was with him; Jesus promises to be with us always.
▶ 56:48 And we look to David in 1 Samuel 19:15. And Saul wanted to kill him he told his servants bring him up to me in the bed that I might kill him and of course his servants say oh you want to kill David okay whatever you want to do well let’s go get David so Saul can kill him we just go along with whatever the people in charge say we can’t do that. David. He had no crown David had to flee to gath another nation he had to move he moved his parents to another country moab he had 400 men that came out with him out of the hundreds of thousands of people 400 came with him. He hid in the forest and in the wilderness he had to hide.
▶ 57:44 David had no crown he had no position he had no throne no home he had a small band of men and he’s living in the wilderness. Yet what he does have is what. He’s got God. Is with him. As was said in the first scripture one of the first scriptures I mentioned God was with I have been with you and wherever you have gone. And we need God with us. Amen. Matthew chapter 28 verse 18 all authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth that’s why you want God with you why because he’s got the authority. He’s got. The authority of heaven and earth you don’t want to not have God with you go therefore make disciples of all nations baptize them in the name of the father the son and the Holy Spirit teach them to observe all things that I’ve commanded you I am with you I am what with you always.
▶ 58:54 Always. Even to the end of the age so God is promising Jesus Christ is promising just like he promised to David he’s promising it to his disciples you are you a disciple this morning we are his disciples he is promising that he’s going to be what with us. To the end. And so we’ve got to remember. We’ve got to make disciples we’ve got to be at people baptized we’ve got to teach them to observe all things they commanded imagine that look at this teach them to observe. I mean it’s just it’s all over the scriptures and everything Jesus we’ve got to observe what’s right and what’s wrong we got to do what’s right all things that I have commanded you somewhere we have to teach people to follow God’s commandments.
▶ 59:51 It’s right there in the great commission. Make disciples disciples that follow his commandments. You got to understand that when people come to Christ. They may not know anything they may still have sin in their life and you’ve got to give them time and give God a chance to work in their lives. But it is important. That we teach. Them to observe the things God has commanded. First Samuel 23 verse 1 the philistines came up against gila. And David inquired with the Lord and he said shall I go and attack these philistines so here they are in the wilderness they have he’s got 600 men now and he’s living there uncomfortable and uh you know maybe they’re comfortable I don’t know they kept having to move but in comparison to the philistines who are ready for battle we’re talking about an army of a nation.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 19:15 (NKJV)
Then Saul sent the messengers back to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.”
— 1 Samuel 19:15 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 56:48Matthew 28:20 (NKJV)
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
— Matthew 28:20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 58:54Did David inquire of the Lord?
Short answer: Yes at Ziklag, and God said pursue; when he didn’t inquire—Bathsheba, numbering the people—he made mistakes.
▶ 1:00:56 These guys are equipped David and his men they’re out in the wilderness. I mean you can only be so equipped out there right. And David inquires of the Lord and I mean can you can you imagine this dave is actually thinking I got 600 people we can do something. You know he’s not just saying oh you know sorry kila see you later. No he actually inquires of the Lord and says shall I go attack these philistines and God says yes and the men were scared they were afraid and he had to acquire again and God answered and said I will deliver the philistines in your hand he struck them with a mighty blow and took where their livestock and saved the inhabitants of kila why because God.
▶ 1:01:51 Was with David. 1 Samuel 30:8. When Ziklag. In Ziklag when the Amalekites came and took David and the 600 men took all of their stuff took their families their wives their children they had captured them and taken them away. Horrible situation. You could say that’s going on in our time. The world is taking our children. The world is trying to capture all the things that we have they’re gonna they can sue you they can try and take but David here inquires of the Lord and he says shall I pursue this troop shall I overtake them and of course they start out and they’re all mad they’re angry another stupid David why do we even follow this guy in the wilderness he’s horrible.
▶ 1:02:59 He’s not anointed king. Dumb guy what are we even doing here shall I pursue this troop David says shall overtake them and God answers he says pursue for you shall overtake and without fail recover all. And he attacked them to the evening of the next day and recovered all the Amalekites that carried away. And so David kept his relationship with God to make sure that he could keep talking with God and that’s important in these two cases in these two examples David’s talking to God God is responding if you’re not in right relationship with God you need to change that today. If you’re not getting anything from God you need to change that today David he would pray he said created me a clean heart take not your Holy Spirit from me and all the problems and all the things that he did all the sins that he went through he won he he wanted to get back and write relationship with God and we’ve messed up we’ve made mistakes but you can get in right relationship with God so that you can have what God with you.
▶ 1:04:20 When David didn’t inquire of God he made mistakes. Bathsheba and didn’t ask hey should I go after that woman. Should I number the people. When his son you know raped tamar he didn’t ask God what to do and more in other cases. But David. Kept a relation his relationship with God. After they had restored and gotten recovered all of the things that were taken from them the wicked and the worthless men of those who went with David answered and said because they didn’t go with us we will not give them any of the spoil and we’re going to lead them away and get them out of here.
▶ 1:05:16 Foreign. First of all Jesus I’m sorry David had some wicked and worthless men you know in the church or Jesus Christ Jesus himself he’s going to be trying to reach wicked and worthless people. Amen. You can’t throw him out right away but you can’t let the wicked and the worthless go to the you the good people that you have and say oh kick them out get them out of here. The wicked and the worthless are trying to get rid of the good guys horrible. David was not having it was good leader he did what was right and God doesn’t throw us out after one problem he calls us higher he wants to restore. First John 1:4 in him was life and the life was the light of men Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven if anyone eats of this bread he will live forever the bread that I shall give is my flesh which I shall give for the life of the world John 6:57 he who feeds on me will live because of me and so we understand how important it is to have God with you.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 30:8 (NKJV)
So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
— 1 Samuel 30:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 1:01:51How do we keep God with us?
Short answer: Make Christ a priority, gather in His name, hide His word in your heart, be filled with the Spirit.
▶ 1:06:41 To have Christ. In your lives right now whatever age you are whatever state you’re in do we have Christ are we still making Christ a priority to have him with us wherever we go. Because when we have him with us we have what. The life we have the living bread we’ve got to feed on Jesus no matter how old we are. And so what do we do today to have God with us in Psalms 22 verse 3 you are holy o you that inhabits the praises of your of Israel you know you want God with you here’s a way to have God with you you got to come in and you got to praise those online this morning everybody in here was praising it was powerful God was here the principle works I encourage you online and all of you be a participant in worship and praise in God he’s really in it he does he inhabits the praises of his people Matthew 18:20 where two or three are gathered there I am and what the myths you want God with you you got to go you’ve got to assemble.
▶ 1:08:11 You got to go where they’re gathered in whose name in his name Christ’s name. Hebrews 13:14 we seek the one to come are we seeking God. Do you want God with you you’ve got to seek him. Many of the Psalms are written by David why because he spent time seeking God and he would write songs that took time. It’s Psalms 119:11 your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you here we go. How do you get God with you you got to put his word into you your word I have hidden do you hear the how the message says your word I have hidden you’ve got to put it you have to do something you’ve got to get the word you got to put it in your mind.
▶ 1:09:05 And then it says clearly that I might not sin against you now you’re gonna sin you’re gonna mess up you’re gonna make mistakes but this word the purpose is that it that you not sin against God that is the goal as you keep adding his word in that is the goal of the word. And so that confirms what we learned about earlier observe his commandments right. The church we’ve got to remember this is what the word is for. Do you have a responsive heart to allow God’s word to come in and change you and I’m talking to my our young generation my generation and the generation to come. Are you putting God’s word in you is your heart responsive can you allow God’s word to come in.
▶ 1:10:09 Even if if it doesn’t fit today’s message. Jesus Christ the word is the same yesterday today and forever Ephesians 5:18 do not be drunk with wine and which is dissipation but be filled with the spirit you want God with you you’ve got to get filled with the spirit of God. Luke chapter 24 verse 49 I send the promise terry and Jerusalem until you be endowed with power from on high. Same thing the spirit of God his promise wait wait on the Lord until you are clothed endowed with power. The power that he has Joshua 24:15 as for me and my house we will serve the Lord we need good parents again.
▶ 1:11:05 We need parents to care about what’s right and what’s wrong. We need parents that have convictions. We need parents that are teaching their kids what is right and what is wrong. Train up your children the way they should go and when they’re old they want depart from it nerd we’ve got to raise our kids in the nurture and the admonition the fear of God children are a gift from God. They belong to him. We need God and our families. This would you come play that song for me real quick. We’re not going to spend too much time here we had a great worship time.
