Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Daniel 4 shows God teaching a heathen king. In a dream a watcher ordered a great tree cut down, leaving a stump—Nebuchadnezzar—so that the living would know the Most High rules and sets up even the lowliest. Be a disciple, not just a believer.
What does Daniel 4 show?
Short answer: A heathen king taught by God—Babylon corrected God’s people, then God revealed Himself to Babylon.
▶ 0:00 In chapter 4, we’re going to see a heathen king being taught by God three important Bible truths. Three important, vital Bible principles. Okay? So, the title of this message, I got two titles again, is Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, is taught three important Bible truths by God himself. God comes and reveals himself to this man. The second title is God reveals himself to and corrects unbelievers, including government rulers, that God uses to correct God’s people.
▶ 0:54 See, Babylon was used to correct God’s people, but then God himself reveals himself to them and corrects them. That’s the nature of our God. So, Daniel chapter 4. The king in chapter 4 verses 1 through 5 has another troubling dream that made him afraid. Now, this time he understands the dream. He can describe it. And he’s terrified. He’s afraid. Daniel 1 verse 4. In Daniel 4, Nebuchadnezzar himself is writing this chapter. Okay? Probably taken from the king’s records. All right? But, this is Nebuchadnezzar himself talking.
▶ 1:47 This is not Daniel. I, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, unto how many people? All people. Now, why is that phrase used? Because he wasn’t king of China, he wasn’t the king of Japan, he wasn’t the king of Australia or Americas. Because of the Revelation, God is speaking to all of us. Are you there? Okay, to all people, all languages, all nations. You hear this terminology used in the prophets and in the book of Revelation a lot. See, God is talking and when he talks to one person, he is using it to talk to all of us. Are you with me? All right. That dwell on all the earth. Peace be multiplied unto you. I thought it was good to show the signs and wonders that the high God has worked toward me.
▶ 2:42 Now, us Pentecostals, Charismatics, these faith camps and miracle camp, we’re really into signs and wonders, but one side, healings, changing water to wine, walking on water, you know, all these you know, highfalutin stuff. But here, in this book, is signs and wonders that us Pentecostals and Charismatics don’t like to talk about. Just remember that statement. All right. How great are his signs and how mighty are his wonders? This is a heathen king talking. Because God has revealed it to him. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and his dominion is from generation to generation. Nebuchadnezzar didn’t even know God.
▶ 3:35 See, God revealed this to him way back before the New Testament was ever written. Now, in verses 6 through 7, the same advisors to the king. He’s still got these bombs around. They couldn’t do anything in chapter 2. They can’t [clears do anything now. Throat] The magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, the soothsayers cannot make known the told dream. In chapter 2, the dream wasn’t told. They had to tell it and interpret it. Now they’ve been told it cuz they told the king in chapter 2, “Tell us the dream and we’ll interpret it.” But here in chapter 4, the king tells him the dream and they still can’t interpret it. And he still uses them for his advisers.
▶ 4:30 Nebuchadnezzar is a little slow like we are. You know, we’re a little slow. And I we we get in our little clicks and our little groups and we advise each other and we’re not getting anywhere and you know truth comes along and we’re a little slow to accept it, aren’t we? Yeah. So the dream is about a tree being cut down, leaving a stump, and I couldn’t find a stump with feathers and nails. No artist, no one understood that that the stump grew feathers, the stump grew nails, and the stump ate of the grass of the field. No one that I could find on the internet interpreted that. So I’m stuck with what they knew after Daniel told them. And I challenge you today, try and interpret this dream without Daniel and see what you come up with.
▶ 5:31 [clears. All right. Throat] So the king comes to Daniel and he says, “Daniel, in my dream I saw a strong tree, number one. One first part of the dream, a tree that grew to heaven in the midst of the earth seen to the end of all the earth. Now, we know that the empire of Babylon did not extend to the four corners of the earth. We know that by common sense, don’t we? But see, when God is talking through Revelation to all of us, he’s talking in a different sense. You got it? Cuz he’s wanting to speak to everyone in the earth. All right. [clears. Those leaves are beautiful, throat] there’s a lot of fruit in it, and it was food for all the animals that dwelled in its shadow, and all the birds that lived in its branches, and all flesh, all mankind was fed of it.
Scripture in this part
Daniel 4:1-3 (NKJV)
Nebuchadnezzar the king, To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. I thought it good to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me. How great are His signs, And how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And His dominion is from generation to generation.
— Daniel 4:1-3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:00What did the watcher say?
Short answer: Cut the tree down, leave the stump—let his mind be changed from man’s.
▶ 6:35 He tells Daniel, number two, a watcher and a holy one from heaven said, “Cut the tree down.” Number three, “Cut the tree down. Cut his branches off, scatter the leaves, scatter the fruit, let the beast and the birds get away from the shadow of its branches.” Okay, now we have three things, a tree, a spirit beings involved, and the tree is cut down. [clears. Number verse 15, “Leave the throat] stump.” All right, now here you get a little idea of the interpretation interpretation of the dream because he says, “Leave the stump of his roots in the earth.” His is a human word.
▶ 7:38 All right, some person is the stump. Right? All right. Boy, I got one little tidbit out of this. So far, I didn’t know anything else, but I got that one. Even [clears throat] with a band of iron and brass, that stump had a band of iron and brass wrapped around it. Okay? I couldn’t find a picture of that. So, just imagine there’s a two bands on that stump, iron and brass. Now, what could that mean? Well, you know, we had iron over there in the statue that Nebuchadnezzar saw, and we had brass, and you can just fantasize all you want from that, and you’re not going to get anywhere. In the tender [clears grass of the field, throat] let it be wet with the dew of heaven.
▶ 8:34 It goes back to the stump. Let the stump be wet with the dew of heaven, and here it is again, his portion. A human word. With the beast in the grass of the earth. Okay? Now, don’t add anything to this stuff. Don’t take away. Just believe what God is saying here. Forget all your prophets out there and all their books, and let’s just stick with Mr. Daniel, okay? Just like we did in the Book of Revelation. We just stuck We just stuck with John and his Revelation. All right. Let [clears his heart, there’s that throat] masculine word again, his heart. The heart is what? The mind, the emotions, and the will of a person.
▶ 9:30 All right, let his mind be changed. Let his emotions, his feelings, be changed from man’s, and let a beast heart be given him. And let seven times pass over him. Seven times here, the word times here it [clears throat] this word for times is only used in the book of Daniel. All right? I’m just throwing that out. Put a little seed in there. Now, this matter the that number two’s up there because what was the second part of the dream? The watchers and the holy one. What’s the first part of the dream? The tree. What’s the third part of the tree of the dream? The trunk. Say it.
▶ 10:21 Tree? Watchers and holy one? Trunk. Okay, we’re back to the second part of the of the dream. This matter is by the decree of the watchers and and the demand by the word of the holy ones. So, this is a spiritual decree, a spiritual commandment. Coming straight from God. Oh. Number five. [clears. To the intent throat] that the living may know that here is the first truth revealed to Daniel. And you got to get this in your cranial vacuum, folks. Truth number one. The most high rules in the kingdom of men.
▶ 11:16 And gives it to whomsoever he will and sets up over it the lowest basis evil men. So, who’s responsible for every government in the world? God. It’s hard for a lot of you to say that. See, the church has taught for decades that Satan’s in charge of this world. And Satan’s in charge of the nations and he can give it to whomever he want. And Daniel said that’s not true. Are you there? So, you don’t like Obama? Who can you blame? God and and yourself.
Scripture in this part
Daniel 4:13-16 (NKJV)
“I saw in the visions of my head while on my bed, and there was a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven. He cried aloud and said thus: ‘Chop down the tree and cut off its branches, Strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts get out from under it, And the birds from its branches. Nevertheless leave the stump and roots in the earth, Bound with a band of iron and bronze, In the tender grass of the field. Let it be wet with the dew of heaven, And let him graze with the beasts On the grass of the earth. Let his heart be changed from that of a man, Let him be given the heart of a beast, And let seven times pass over him.
— Daniel 4:13-16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 6:35Whom does God set up?
Short answer: The basest of men—be a disciple, not just a believer.
▶ 12:08 We picked him. Don’t get yourself out of the picture here. He sets up over at the lowest of men. Well, that’s a real thing to Nebuchadnezzar. God [clears throat] is calling him what? The lowest of men. And he thinks he’s something great. [clears. All right. Throat] Now, in Luke 4:5, this is where the people get that Satan is in charge of the nations and in charge of governments. There’s no use voting. There’s no use worrying about it. It’s it’s Satan’s authority. He does all that. Okay? And he takes it out of when Jesus was being tested in the wilderness, Satan came and tempted him and tested him.
▶ 13:01 And showed him all the kingdoms of the earth. In a moment [clears of time. Throat] And he says, “All this power I will give you and the glory of them. [clears. For that is delivered throat] unto me and to whomsoever I will I give it.” This is where they take that and say Satan is the one in charge of government. Okay? And I believed that for about a year and a half till I read my Bible through and studied it and then I began to see there’s a conflict here and there’s a problem. And Daniel was the one that revealed and solved the conflict for me. All right? Now, let me show you why you can’t use this verse. Are you ready? Are you interested?
▶ 13:54 I mean, it does say there that Satan is, doesn’t it? [clears. And Daniel says he’s throat] not. There’s a conflict. How many can see the conflict? Am I making this clear? Daniel says God rules in the kingdoms of men and sets up whomever he wills. Here Satan says, I control the nations and the wealth of nations and I can give it to whomsoever I will. We got a conflict. And a lot of Christians that I know believe this above Daniel, but let me show you how to solve the conflict. [clears. Jesus in John 8:44 throat] talking to the Jews who believed on him, by the way, they were believers. You understand?
▶ 14:46 That’s why you don’t want to be a believer. You want to be a disciple. You don’t want to be just a person that has faith in Christ. You believe in Christ, you believe in the Bible, you want to be a disciple because believers can be dead wrong. Okay. [clears. You are of your father throat] the Devil, he tells them. Man, that’s not nice. That’s not politically correct talk to people like that. And the lust of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode in the truth because there is no truth in him. So when he spoke to Jesus in the wilderness, he was what? Lying. Say it. Lying. And he emphasized it. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own for he is a liar and the father of lies.
▶ 15:44 He lied to Jesus. Jesus is the king of all nations, the king of kings and Lord of Jesus knew who he was. Jesus didn’t fall for that lie. Now you can feel that burning in your heart. That’s truth. Amen. This [clears really set me free from throat] that stupid doctrine that churches believed. And I learned to get involved in government and vote and try to get righteous people in government because the Bible says when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked are in an authority, the people are oppressed. And we need Christians to rise up and get involved in government, not leave it to Satan and the sinners of the world. Can I hear an amen? And this is what God is teaching everyone including Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 4.
▶ 16:44 Isn’t that good? Uh by the way, try interpreting this dream as I said before without Daniel. And a lot of people are and they’re really messing up the book of Daniel. And I’m going to show you exactly why they’re messing it up. Okay? From the book of Daniel. And they got all these charts and they got all these books and people are buying They won’t read the Bible themselves. They buy the books that try to tell them what the Bible says when they never go to the Bible and let the Holy Ghost tell them what the Bible says. Could that be amen? And don’t get me wrong, I read a lot of books. I’m constantly reading. Before the internet came along, I read 30 to 35 books a year. Okay, that’s about three books a month. After the internet come along, man, I can read books much faster because I can just go to the content that I want to read.
▶ 17:40 I don’t have to go through all the adjectives and the adverbs and all man, speeds up everything. And I drive my family crazy cuz when I listen to books, audio books, I have it on fast speed. But most things are so wordy, they’re worthless. I only need the truth out of these things. Amen. Anyway, I’m telling you, reading books is great. But, always read books with the book. [clears throat]. So, Daniel interprets the dream in verse 19. All right. Nebuchadnezzar, the dream is to them that hate you.
▶ 18:31 That’s nice to hear. [clears. The dream throat] and the interpretation is to those that oppose you. Okay, well, you can just see the face of Nebuchadnezzar going, “Oh my God.” Verses 20 through 22, talking about the tree that grew up to heaven and all the branches and the animals and all that, he says, “The tree is you, oh king. You’re the tree.” Now Nebuchadnezzar knows that tree’s going to get cut down cuz he he’s already heard that part of the dream. He said, “The watcher and the holy ones that say say cut down tree, leave the stump is the decree of the Most High upon you. Down here at the bottom I have the five sections [clears throat] of this dream.
▶ 19:24 All right, so the tree is the king, got it? And we got the interpretation now. It’s specifically who? Nebuchadnezzar. The watchers and the holy one are what? Spirit beings. Hebrews 2 tells us they are angels. They are ministers, spirit beings created by God to minister to us here on earth. All right. Number three, cut down the tree. See, the watchers and the holy ones told him to cut down the tree, not human beings. [clears. And it is the decree throat] of the Most High. Now, who is the Most High? God. Yeah. God sent the watchers and the holy ones to do this. God is the one that’s behind this dream. Okay, I’m bringing the results of it.
Scripture in this part
Daniel 4:17 (NKJV)
‘This decision is by the decree of the watchers, And the sentence by the word of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men.’
— Daniel 4:17 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 12:08Who is the stump?
Short answer: Nebuchadnezzar—so the living may know the Most High rules.
▶ 20:18 All right, and the stump is who? The stump is Nebuchadnezzar. He It’s still part of the tree. It’s just left the stump. So, half of him is laying down with the branches over part of him, most of him, and then a little bit is left over here in a stump. But the stump is the king. They will drive you. Now, who is they? You can use the cheat number up there. It tells you who they are. The watchers and the holy ones. Are you there? Uh, Uh, how are going to do that? I read this for years before I caught on that they were not his enemies, they were the watchers and the holy one.
▶ 21:22 And see, you’re getting it in just 2 minutes today. They. See. [clears. See, who throat] are the ones that said cut down the tree? The watchers and the holy one. They, plural. All right, the spirit beings. They will drive you, the king, from men to live and eat grass with the beast of the field. So, who drove, who is going to drive Nebuchadnezzar into the field? The watchers and the holy one. The spirit beings. And [clears throat] seven times shall pass over you. Now, I don’t care what these books read, seven times, it doesn’t say it’s seven years. It doesn’t say it’s seven months. It doesn’t say it’s seven weeks.
▶ 22:14 It says it’s seven what? Times. Don’t add to that, please. Cuz you wanted to fit into your little doctrinal chart over here. Just let Daniel do the talking. Could that be a good amen? Yeah. And then the [clears throat] word again is only used in Daniel. This seven times. All right, everybody got it so far? Yeah, you feel pretty good when somebody’s telling you what everything means, man. Hallelujah, I’m really spiritual. But before Daniel come along, I was in Looney Land. I didn’t know what in the world was going on. Now, [clears verse 25. Throat] You’re going to be out there in the fields, like an animal, for [clears throat] seven times until See, until you Now, remember, the king This was to the king and the living.
▶ 23:21 Remember back there in the first part? The living may know. The king and the living. Are you living? Yeah, so it’s you. See? Till the living know that here it is again. Truth number one, the most high God rules in the kingdoms of men. He’s repeating it. And gives it to whomsoever he will. Whereas they Now, who’s they? Who’s they? The watchers and the holy one, the spirit beings. They commanded to leave the stop. Who’s the stop? The king, Nebuchadnezzar. Of the tree roots, your kingdom shall be secure under you. You’re not going to lose your kingdom. Now, folks, figure that one out. How do you act like an animal and still keep your kingdom?
▶ 24:16 That’s God. That’s our God. Hallelujah. That’s the supernatural power of Jesus Christ. After that, you shall have known. See, after you’ve known that the heavens do rule. Truth number one. Who’s in charge of the earth? God, the heavens. The spiritual kingdom is in charge of everything. Makes makes it clear. And that is the goal. The goal [clears is to teach us that throat] God rules in the kingdoms of men, and he raises up kings and sets down kings at his pleasure.
▶ 25:09 And mostly by the righteousness of the nation. You get the rulers you live like. Same way in the church world. You get the preachers you deserve.

Daniel 4:20-26 (NKJV)
“The tree that you saw, which grew and became strong, whose height reached to the heavens and which could be seen by all the earth, whose leaves were lovely and its fruit abundant, in which was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and in whose branches the birds of the heaven had their home— it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown and reaches to the heavens, and your dominion to the end of the earth. “And inasmuch as the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave its stump and roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field; let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let him graze with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him’; this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king: They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses. “And inasmuch as they gave the command to leave the stump and roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be assured to you, after you come to know that Heaven rules.
