Fight For God - October 29, 2023: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
After worship and prayer for the Spirit, the message contrasts Saul and David. Saul was given a new heart but chose to please people, lost God’s presence and turned on David; David, despite his sin, repented and fought for God with his heart, his mouth and his love. The church must love God first, renew its heart and become a David church.

Judges 14:6 (NKJV)
And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.
— Judges 14:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 15:54 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What transition is needed in our prayer time?
Short answer: Recognizing He is here; like a husband who keeps saying I have that prepared for you, He has given us authority to ask in His name.
▶ 23:55 Lord Jesus we thank you that all power power and authority is in you and Lord with that power and that authority you have given us your name Lord you have given us relationship with you like a husband and a wife everything the husband owns Lord becomes the wives and in unity they commune with each other they love and grow. Together but the authority is the same authority that you have given us in your name so Lord let our prayers be transitional.
▶ 24:39 Today let them be relation. Today Lord you are here you have come and Lord when a wife is asking over and over and over and the husband says yes yes I I have that for you I’m giving it to you and yet she keeps okay hey but this this this no I have that I have that prepared for you and Lord we need a transition in our prayer time that we recognize you’re here and when you’re here you said we can ask anything in your name because we have that covering of relationship Lord all that you have is ours all that you have open up our eyes to see that we’ll receive and we’ll begin to to walk in a new and living way because we are in relationship with you Jesus and we thank you for that this day we love you in Jesus’ name in his name in the power of his name the relationship of his name we.

— John 14:13-14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 24:39 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Did God give Saul a new heart?
Short answer: Yes; the Spirit came on Saul, he prophesied and was turned into another man, and he was brave, merciful and mighty in battle.
▶ 25:50 Pray. Amen amen amen may you find your seats 10:6 says the spirit of the Lord will come upon you and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man so here again we have the spirit of God came upon Saul king Saul he prophesied. And this promise came to pass that he would be turned to another man through uh God giving him a new heart in the in the next scripture here 10:9 God gave Saul another heart and all those signs came to pass that. Day Saul in 1st Samuel 11:11 it says he led a [unclear] or it doesn’t say that I’m summarizing he led a successful attack against the Ammonites that the Ammonites wanted to take jabish gilead captive they wanted to enslave them and Saul led the children of Israel and attacked that enemy and defeated them and there were people that were saying who who said that Saul shouldn’t be king we need to punish them and his reply was no not a man shall be put to death this day for today the Lord has accomplished salvation in Israel in 1 Samuel 13:7 all the people followed Saul.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 10:6 (NKJV)
Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
— 1 Samuel 10:6 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:501 Samuel 10:9 (NKJV)
So it was, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day.
— 1 Samuel 10:9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:501 Samuel 11:11 (NKJV)
So it was, on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and killed Ammonites until the heat of the day. And it happened that those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
— 1 Samuel 11:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:50 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Why did Saul lose his way?
Short answer: He decided not to love God; he wanted to please people rather than God, and rejected the new heart God gave him.
▶ 27:17 Trembling sam uh Saul was very brave he had that bravery he had that courage from the spirit of the Lord to even though the people were afraid he was leading them up to battle so he had this period in his life and after being after the spirit of God coming upon him after getting that new heart that he was mighty in battle he was. Merciful and he was brave. Amen and this Saul is very different from the Saul that had to face. Goliath. Later on. Saul decided that he was not going to love God and we’ll explain what that means 1 Samuel 13:13 you have done foolishly this is Samuel talking to Saul you have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God what does that have to do with love your kingdom shall not continue because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you and so God told Samuel this his kingdom is no more his kingdom shall not continue but of course we know Saul tried to hold on to the kingdom he tried to stay.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 13:13-14 (NKJV)
And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”
— 1 Samuel 13:13-14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 27:17What is the first and great commandment?
Short answer: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind; loving God means keeping His word, and the Father and Son make their home in us.
▶ 28:38 King he had the people’s support so he was going to. Stay and even though God gave Saul another heart as time went by Saul rejected that new heart he wanted to please people rather than pleasing. God and we can fall into that trap. Amen in Matthew chapter 22:37 in red letters here this is Jesus talking he says you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart soul your mind this is the first and great commandment it’s the great commandment and it’s the first it’s priority commandment in your life before everything else is loving what. God John 14:23 explains what this means even more if anyone loves me he will keep my word and my father will love him and he will come to him and make our home with him so Jesus is reminding us the priority uh goal in your life the greatest thing we can do is to love God and he explains it even further if you want to love God that means you’ll keep his word above other people’s.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 22:37-38 (NKJV)
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.
— Matthew 22:37-38 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 28:38John 14:23 (NKJV)
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
— John 14:23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 28:38Can a young person love God like that?
Short answer: Yes; he says as a young person he had a desire in his heart not to displease or hurt God by disobeying.
▶ 29:56 Words. And if we want to serve God in every season of our life we have to put loving God keeping his commandments and his laws first in our life you can develop as a young person a relationship with God where you love him where you do not want to uh displease him I remember as a young person I had that desire in my heart I didn’t want to displease God I didn’t want to harm hurt God by. Disobeying and it says here that Jesus and the father will come and make their home in us and that’s what we want don’t you want God coming in your heart amen making not just coming for a minute not just coming for a day but making their dwelling place in you the scriptures say that the kingdom of God is within you Christ is in you he wants to make his home in you he wants to dwell.
What does the fake fruit show?
Short answer: One piece has no nourishment; without love we are empty inside. It’s not the suit, it’s the fruit.
▶ 31:00 There 1 Corinthians 13:1 though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels though I have given the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries all knowledge though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor though I give my body to be burned but have not love I am nothing I need two volunteers this morning. And Ryan I’m volunteering you just stay right where you are stay right where you are and mr Dagel I’m volunteering you okay I have two fruit I have two pieces of fruit in my hand which one do you want right my left your left this one okay I you want this one you going can can you catch.
▶ 31:53 This oh man so lucky okay this is yours mr Dagel. One of those is fake it has no calories it has no fructose it has no fiber it has no nourishment in the for the body and one of them has everything amen one of them has the calories it has fructose it has fiber it has nourishment for your body and that’s what God is saying. Here Saul had the outward appearance that he was. Something uh or special or uh that’s not where it’s.
▶ 32:49 At it used to be said when I was younger it’s not the suit it’s the fruit amen and you may we may look good on the outside but inside we might be empty that’s important if we don’t have love we are empty if we don’t have love for God we are empty in our christianity you’re not going to get the fruits of the spirit you’re not going to get the nourishment you’re not going to get the the the calories and the things that you need in your life and other people’s lives if we keep rejecting God’s word and God’s truth and this is what happened in Saul’s life he had it says I had though I had the gift of prophecy Saul prophesied. Amen he came down off of that hill and he was prophesying with the prophets.
Scripture in this part
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (NKJV)
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
— 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 31:00What is the difference between smoke and a raincloud?
Short answer: They look alike, but one is toxic and the other gives life; with love we are like the raincloud, and without it we become toxic.
▶ 33:44 He had faith he would go into battle he had faith that God would be with. Him he was helping out the Israelites feeding his his people he gave up his body to war he’s putting his life on the line but what he did not have. Love at one point in his life he decided to turn away from loving God and see that’s where things go. Bad there’s two pictures up here and though they look very similar I’m sure you understand and know the difference between them the picture on top is a uh a cloud of what what is it smoke and the picture on the bottom is a cloud of what a raincloud that’s right one has what.
Why couldn’t Saul fight Goliath?
Short answer: He was anointed, tall and skilled, but God was not with him; he asks whether we come to a place where we can no longer fight because we rejected His word.
▶ 34:43 Poison. Toxic one and the other one on the bottom has life and will give life and that’s what it is when we have love we’re like this raincloud l when we don’t have it we become toxic and we don’t want that so it’s very important in every season of your life while you’re serving God that you hold on to and keep loving him by keeping his word I don’t care if you can talk in tongues I don’t care if you have the gift of healing I don’t care if you’re an amazing wonderful showy person do you obey and serve the living God amen. 1st Samuel 17:11 Saul and all Israel heard these words of the philistine and they were what they were.
▶ 35:39 Afraid you know what was wrong with Saul Saul was anointed king Saul was given a new heart Saul was given all this stuff as king I mean he had the position Goliath comes on the scene and Saul is. Running. Why because God is not with. Him what’s wrong with. Saul why couldn’t he fight the giant Saul was tall he was handsome he he was skilled in battle why couldn’t he fight. Goliath and God is asking us this morning as church as as the church as Christians do we get to this place where we no longer can win and fight. Anymore because we have rejected the truth we have rejected his word and will not keep.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 17:11 (NKJV)
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
— 1 Samuel 17:11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 34:43What happened when Saul heard the women sing about David?
Short answer: He became angry and eyed David from that day; this is what happens in the church when people become like Saul and start hurting it.
▶ 36:39 It 1st Samuel 18:5 Saul set David over uh his men and they came out with a new hit song called Saul has slain his thousands and David his 10 thousands and the women started singing that and Saul was he became very angry. And he eyed David from that day forward he targeted David so all of a sudden this guy who who had all these great things at the beginning has now become angry and hateful toward. David and David hasn’t done anything wrong he’s benefiting the people of Israel and this is what happens in the church people decide oh I’m going to become like Saul and they start hurting the church Christians in there hurt start hurting Christians. And bring harm leaders in the church hurt other churches and leader it’s and we harm one.
▶ 37:36 Another the distressing spirit came uh from God came upon Saul and Saul cast the spear at David he became so angry and upset that he threw a spear tried to kill. David and it says that Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him and that was the key amen David had God with him that’s why he could stand before Goliath that’s why he could face the battle that’s why he could actually get rid of this distressing spirit if you don’t know Saul was in a place in his life where this dist distressing spirit would come an evil spirit would come because God wasn’t around anymore because he rejected God and this evil spirit would come and it would just bother it would affect him and and they said well we need to bring somebody in and if they and they can play the harp and they can get rid of this thing and who did they bring in.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 18:5-9 (NKJV)
So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. Now it had happened as they were coming home, when David was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with musical instruments. So the women sang as they danced, and said: “Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.” Then Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?” So Saul eyed David from that day forward.
— 1 Samuel 18:5-9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 36:39 (quoted; reference not named in the message)1 Samuel 18:10-12 (NKJV)
And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand, as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul’s hand. And Saul cast the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” But David escaped his presence twice. Now Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, but had departed from Saul.
— 1 Samuel 18:10-12 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 37:36 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How can we drive away a distressing spirit?
Short answer: Be a David yourself: worship, participate when you come in, and pray and sing the Psalms on your own at home.
▶ 38:41 David and he starts playing the harp and he starts singing his Psalms that he would sing out in the field and he’s and that distressing spirit would go and be. Gone you don’t have to depend on somebody else for that that you can be a David yourself you can you can h be that worshipper yourself take the opportunity when you come in to worship God that’s why I encourage you participate be a worshipper when you go home you can worship God on your own we have the Psalms amen you can open up a Psalm you can open up a proverb you can pray that Psalm you can pray that proverb you can sing that Psalm and you can beat back the enemy in your life. Acts 7:51 Stephen if you remember in the New Testament in the time of Saul of Tarsus different Saul after uh Jesus had died and risen from the grave.
Scripture in this part
1 Samuel 16:23 (NKJV)
And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.
— 1 Samuel 16:23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 38:41 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How can we fight against God with our heart?
Short answer: Like those Stephen rebuked, by becoming stiff-necked and resisting the Holy Spirit, not keeping the word.
▶ 39:50 They were ministering and they got this guy steven before the Sanhedrin before for the Jews and he is he is preaching them to them a message he’s sharing a message with them and one of the things he says is you stiff necked stubborn and uncircumcised in heart and ears you always resist the Holy Spirit and so this is how we can fight against God with our heart like king Saul he was given a new heart but he got. Hard he got stubborn your fathers persecuted the prophets they killed those who foretold of the f just one you have become betrayers and murderers and see that’s what king Saul was doing he turned around to David now and he wanted to kill. David because his heart became what hard he was resisting what the Holy.
Scripture in this part
Acts 7:51-53 (NKJV)
“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.”
— Acts 7:51-53 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 39:50Are you renewing your heart?
Short answer: Don’t be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind; don’t live on the experience you had years ago.
▶ 40:50 Spirit are we becoming hard-hearted toward God are we resisting the Holy Spirit you receive the law by angels and have not kept it here it is again there it is the same message you have not what kept it are we keeping God’s. Word are we fighting God with our heart by resisting him like Saul are we persecuting people in the church or or or you know speaking. Bad about one another not good we need a new heart Romans 12:12 do not be conformed to this world don’t be like this world you know this world they want to in America everything is oh we want we want to be better so I’m going to criticize and tear you down until you are be.
▶ 41:47 Better I’m going to say all these awful words until you change and get better well that’s not how it works don’t be conformed to to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind see Saul he never renewed that heart that he. Received and that’s very important are you renewing your heart or are you living on the experience that you had 10 years ago 5 years ago a year ago 30 years ago or are you keep do you keep going to God to get that heart changed in you. We all need it I need this. Too that you may prove what is good and acceptable create in me a clean heart oh God renew a steadfast spirit within me this is David.
Scripture in this part

— 1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 42:39How do we fight God with our mouth?
Short answer: The tongue is a fire set on fire by hell; when we hurt the church we persecute Jesus, as Saul of Tarsus did.
▶ 43:43 Amen James 3:6 the tongue is a fire a world of iniquity it’s so set among our members that it defiles the whole body body and is set on fire by hell no man can tame the tongue it is an unruly evil full of deadly poison just like that cloud of smoke look at this fire right we used to we would have u wildfires here in California I don’t know if you guys remember the wildfire that came through here and all the smoke in the air and you know I I would go outside and I would be like oh my gosh I need to I I can’t even breathe because the smoke would affect me. Um and that’s what God is saying our tongue is like our tongue with it we bless our God and with it we curse men out of the same mouth proceede blessing and cursing and this not this ought not be so we can hurt God’s.
▶ 44:47 People we can fight against God we can refuse to praise God lift up the name of God. If you remember what Christ said to Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus he said Saul Saul why are you persecuting me and Jesus and Saul said who are you and Jesus replied he said I am Jesus whom you are persecuting see when we hurt one another when we hurt the church see Saul was persecuting who the church and when you persecute the church and when you put down and hurt and try to harm the church you are fighting God you are trying to hurt and persecute Christ. Himself Psalms chapter 3134 I will bless the Lord at all times his praise shall continually be on my mouth let the high praises of God be in their mouth for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty and pulling in God for pulling down strongholds what are we using our mouth for.

How did David fight for God despite his sin?
Short answer: He committed sexual immorality with Bathsheba but repented and didn’t do it again; we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
▶ 46:54 David David fought for God now we know he had mistakes in his life and that was the beautiful thing we know that he committed sexual immorality with Bathsheba but he repented he changed and he didn’t do it again and that’s the beautiful thing about Christ we can come to him when we mess up he we have an advocate with the father Jesus Christ the righteous and we can get forgiveness and David did have to you know he had a punishment in his life but he was able to still be restored and we can be restored amen but David had a heart after. God not a hard heart he praised the Lord at all times and he loved God first Saul had people waiting on him he had a kingly house he had the position but he could not overcome the distressing spirit he couldn’t face Goliath he sought David in the wilderness to kill him several times he sought David out to kill.

Information but he couldn’t get an answer so he went to a medium a witch he needed someone else who was connected to God to come in and take care of the enemy and what I’m explaining today is we don’t you don’t have to lean on somebody else you can know God and have a relationship with God yourself speak with God yourself if you can change these three areas and I’m sure there’s more but three basic areas what are you doing with your mouth what are you doing with your love do you love.

Keilah from the Philistines it says he struck them with a mighty blow he inquired of God and he struck them with a mighty blow he was strong even while he was in the wilderness even while he was in a cave even while he was running for his life he fought and won he spared Saul’s life. Twice David and his men their families were cap ured and he strengthened himself in God in the Lord and recovered all and more.
