▶ Watch this part (20:27)

Short answer: A faithful father who drives the church bus shares Psalm 27 on dwelling in the house of the Lord.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 20:27 Open our ears this morning and hear mr tubes is very faithful man uh I don’t think he’s ever missed uh going and picking up the kids apart from having COVID. But that was it or he’s on vacation or something so we really appreciate him his dedication. And uh it’s it’s unheard of the dedication that we have the people have in this place so we appreciate you guys and I’m gonna invite mr tavis up to share a rule for life unless you’re are you ready okay. Good morning ryder there’s some papers in the drawer there could you get those out. Give me the top one.

▶ 21:23 I don’t have a I don’t have a fancy video thing going here but I did prepare some papers it’s got three scriptures I’m guessing a lot of you are real familiar with. Psalms 27 verses 4 and 5. One morning I was reading my Bible. And. I’m from a musical family and we uh we all in my family we all play musical instruments and it’s been a big part of my life and God put a melody to Psalms 27 verses 4 and 5. I can tell my voice is shaking a little bit I hope I’m able to. Relay this but if you can put a scripture to a melody it makes it real easy to memorize the scripture.

▶ 22:20 And let me give it a whack here. One thing I desired of the Lord that will I seek. That I may dwell in the house of the Lord. All the days of my life. To behold the beauty of the Lord. And. Inquire in his temple. That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. For in time of trouble he will hide me in his pavilion.

▶ 23:17 In the secret place of his tabernacle. He’ll hide me. He will set me high upon a rock. He shall set me high upon a rock. That I may dwell in the house of the Lord. All the days of my life. I’d like to sing that first verse again but you guys got the you guys got the gist of it there. I want you to understand that. We are the house of the Lord it’s not a building. We are the temple of God.

One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. What is his life lesson?

▶ Watch this part (24:10)

Short answer: Adjust your course often by the scriptures, like a navigator, and discipline the body.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 24:10 And the lesson I want to learn is that we need to adjust our position we need to adjust our heart. To God’s. We need to adjust the course in our life. And uh. I often think of it as a journey on a ship on the ocean. I have a friend who uh grew up on hawaii an island thousands of miles out to sea. And back in the 60s. He got on a sailboat and him and a couple of buddies sailed that sailboat from hawaii all the way to the west coast here. And if you’re familiar with the americas.

▶ 25:04 If you head towards the rising sun it would be tough to miss America. He he wasn’t sure they were running low they were out of food they were running low on water. Weeks into the trip. They knew they were heading in the right direction but they didn’t know where they were. And a freighter came by. And saw this sailboat hundreds of miles out to sea and they stopped and they gave them a big pot of stew and all the water they could carry and they told them they were only a few miles away. A few hundred miles away I should say. And so they knew that that they were gonna make it and of course they got their boat to America.

▶ 25:58 But if you’re going the other way. You gotta you gotta keep your course straight as an arrow. Got to get the right course you have to adjust often the wind changes direction. The waves change direction. You can be buffeted and you got to check your position you gotta chart your course you gotta check the stars you gotta head the right direction or you’re gonna miss hawaii. By hundreds of miles you’ll never see it. And you won’t make it. And that’s what we need to do. We need to get up every morning. And we need to dwell in the house of the Lord we’ve got to calm our spirits.

▶ 26:55 And look to the scriptures. And we need to chart our course and adjust our course. And we need to do it often if you don’t do it often you’re going to be going way off course and you’re going to be adjusting your course by great degree. And it’s going to be a lot harder to get where you’re going and you might not make it. In Romans chapter 7. Says for I know. That in me that is in my flesh nothing good dwells. Your body. Isn’t bad and it’s not good it’s just a body it’s just a building like this building that we’re in.

▶ 27:53 And it has needs you’re going to get hungry and food is going to be a real important part of your life. Water your body is gonna. Is gonna influence you to get what it wants. And if we listen to our flesh too much if we put too much emphasis in. The building. We’re going to miss the mark we need to be setting our course. For our temple to be God’s temple. Nothing good dwells in the flesh nothing bad but our flesh can. Mislead us terribly for to will is present with me.

▶ 28:47 But how to perform what is good I do not find that in my body. For the good that I will to do I do not do. I always want to eat another breakfast burrito. And that’s not necessarily what my body needs. You always want another cookie. Or another your your body is like that was good that was a good cookie get another one and if we follow that we’re gonna have trouble in our lives. But the evil that I will not to do that I practice a lot of times I eat that extra breed or the extra cookie. Now if I do what I will not to do it is no longer I who do it but sin that dwells in me.

Scripture (NKJV)

Romans 7:18-19 (NKJV)

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.

What do the seasons teach?

▶ Watch this part (29:49)

Short answer: A time for everything—time to die, time to heal—so see the hurting and do what’s right anyway.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 29:49 So I need to bring my body. And I need to discipline it and I need to quiet my spirit and seek God with this body. In Ecclesiastes chapter 3 verses 1 through 8 to everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under heaven. And it has a whole lot of things that you can do. Some of them look like really good things. Some of them look like really bad things but the Bible says that to everything there is a time. And we need to adjust our course so we’re doing what we’re supposed to do. Of course the first one is a time to be born yes we are born.

▶ 30:48 And there’s a time to die and being born oh that’s a good thing a time to die well that’s a bad thing but everybody that’s ever lived in this life. Has passed on. That’s part of life it’s proper now if you’re young. Of course it’s not right. If you’re old it’s much more common. Okay there’s a whole lot of other things here. Some of them. A time to kill. Goodness gracious a time to kill it’s in the ten commandments. How can there be a time to kill. Even a tragedy like killing when it’s time if you’re a soldier and you’re in a war.

▶ 31:46 There’s a time for that. Much more common is a time to heal. We need to look around us and we need to see people that are hurting. People that are dying and we need to help them. Heaven forbid. If we ever have get put in the position if we’re ever in a position where it’s time to kill God help us. But. Even the seemingly tragic things. If we don’t do what we’re supposed to be doing. Terrible things would happen. If the soldiers don’t carry out their grim task what will become of their country. To everything there is a season a time and a purpose under heaven and we need to rise every day and seek God and what he has for us and things that we may not want to do.

▶ 32:52 We need to do what’s right anyways. And things that we want to do can be tragically wrong if we just do what we want to do. So that’s my life lesson for today. I want us all to every day every the Bible says pray without ceasing ask God to help you to do what’s right in all situations. Thank you for your time. You guys hear that then I may dwell in the house of the Lord amen.

To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away; A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace.

What are the six rules for life from Moses?

▶ Watch this part (33:45)

Short answer: Rules drawn from Moses’ life, starting with: work hard and lead a quiet life.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 33:45 It’s good to be in God’s house it’s good to be involved in God’s house it’s very important David in the Psalms made it such a high priority and we need to make it a high priority too. Uh Romans I like that my body’s not good it’s not bad it’s just the body. And uh the world today places a lot of importance on the body and living you only live once so use your body to do all kinds of stupid stuff but there’s more to it God has given you a spirit a soul that’s gonna live forever you can be with him you can live have eternal life with Christ it’s not just about your body amen amen. We’re going to look to the Bible this morning.

▶ 34:38 I have six rules for life taken from Moses. And this is going to be a little short so kids pay attention this is very important right now if you’re looking around or you know daydreaming. Some focus right now. On God’s word and our example this morning. So rules for life from church fathers or a church father. Six rules for life we’re looking at Moses in Exodus chapter three when he first started uh he had fled Egypt and he was wit in midian working with his father-in-law. Now Moses was tending the flock of jethro his father-in-law the priest of midian young people the first rule for life is. Oh is work.

▶ 35:34 It is important for you to understand that you need to work you need to work hard. First Thessalonians 4 11 it explains it says that you also aspire to lead a quiet life mind your own business. And to work with your own hands young people when you grow up your goal and priority should be to start working and become in independent as soon as possible. Work with your own hands make your own way through life don’t make excuses. Colossians 3:23 says whatever you do work it with all your heart do it wholeheartedly as working for the Lord not for human masters I remember working in brea carbon canyon church and on wednesdays I would do the grounds it would help keep the grounds and one day you know I’m just like.

▶ 36:34 Cutting grass edging doing this as mr Barnes showed me all the stuff he wanted me to do and one day he’s like Michael. What’d you do over here. And he reminded me of the scripture do everything wholeheartedly and so from then on I was I got out there and I was mowing and I was. And I did it as best as I could and it’s I was like 16 17. You know these are important things to learn as soon as you can you’re a young person learn to work with all your heart. Put your heart into it you know does the boss always have to look over you hey are you doing your work oh how are you doing hey hey you’re not you’re sitting down looking at your phone all day you’re not getting anything done you’re not helping the company you know work wholeheartedly.

Scripture in this part

Scripture (NKJV)

that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,

What did Moses do at the bush and when asking questions?

▶ Watch this part (37:31)

Short answer: Turn aside to see what God is doing, and bring your questions to God, not just to others.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 37:31 And not just the young people but all of us you know we have jobs we have to be responsible to our bosses and all that rule number two Exodus chapter three verse four when the Lord saw that he turned aside to. Look that he turned aside to look God called to him from the midst of the bush this is when Moses saw the burning bush and he said Moses Moses and he said here I am. Now Moses could have said see ya or get me out of here but he said here I am and rule number two for life is respond right to God when he you could God could be calling you to believe in his son Jesus Christ God could be calling you to follow and obey him. Whatever it is we have to respond right to God.

▶ 38:26 Rule number three Exodus chapter four verse one Moses answered and said suppose they will not believe so God now is talking to him and he’s saying I want you to go to Egypt and I want you to deliver my people from Egypt and so Moses is saying suppose they will not believe or listen to my voice suppose they say the Lord has not appeared to you rule number three it’s okay to ask questions. But be respectful. You know it’s very easy to get familiar with people uh and I’m guilty of this myself and you know instead of just asking questions right and approaching things right you get very disrespectful and you just start. The way you talk is very harsh and all that you know and it’s it’s so it’s eye-opening because you see when Moses is talking to God he’s like you know he’s very careful with his words.

▶ 39:26 But you know everything changes when it’s not God right we go to our neighbor or we go to you know our brethren and we change our tone you need to go. You know we can. We want to have the same approach or a similar approach a respectful approach you know what I’m saying. And his answer to his question was that take up the raw it will become a snake grab it by the tail he put he said put your hand in your chest and it will become leprosy and it was and then he put his hand back and it was restored and he would take walk take water and it would turn into blood on dry land so God had an answer for his questions that’s also the other thing part of this God has answers a lot of people will say well God doesn’t have answers to my questions well did you ask him did you go to the book and search it out or did you just say God doesn’t have answers.

▶ 40:29 And that’s what a lot of people are doing. You know. Moses asked some more questions while he’s there he actually went to Egypt he’s following what God is telling him to do and and then he says Lord why have you brought trouble on this people why is it that you have sent me for since I came to pharaoh to speak here in your name he has done evil to this people neither have you delivered your people at all you told me you were going to live and you haven’t done it you know to me this is kind of like a logical question right I think it’s fair. You know you said you’re gonna do this and it’s and now your people are getting hurt. And they’re throwing mud at me. Um. But again he was respectful when he asked these questions to God and of course God had an answer he said now you will see what I will do to pharaoh for with a strong hand he will let him go.

What about excuses?

▶ Watch this part (41:34)

Short answer: Moses said he was slow of speech, but God isn’t buying excuses—it’s about Him: I will be with you.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 41:34 So God has answers. For our questions. And it’s okay to have questions. But you got we have to search out the answers Exodus chapter 4 verse 10 rule number four Moses said to the Lord I o my Lord I am not eloquent I don’t speak well I am slow of speech and slow of tongue and rule number four that we’re finding for Moses is no excuses. Okay God has heard all of the excuses. He is the same God from the beginning and he has been approaching people telling him to do stuff for a long time and he’s hurt them all. Right. I got this and I’ve got that I got a family I’ve got a business I got this I got health problems God has heard all the excuses.

▶ 42:38 He’s not buying it. He’s not gonna buy my dog ate my homework. There’s no excuses. You can try. But he’s not even gonna pay attention to your excuse he’s just gonna keep saying the same thing hey are you gonna do this. Rule number five Exodus chapter 3 verse 10. Sorry I saw that picture I had to put it up I thought it was very funny come now therefore and I will send you to pharaoh that you may bring my people the children of Israel out of Egypt and Moses is like who am I that I should go to pharaoh and that I I. Should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt rule number five is it’s not about you.

▶ 43:32 It’s about him. It’s about God and what was his answer if you remember in Exodus chapter 3 verse 12 it says I will be with you. Who am I doesn’t matter who you are. When I am with you that makes the difference. That makes it all work amen. When you’re walking through the sea and God parts it and he’s with you that’s what makes the difference. It’s not about you. And we get down on ourselves saying oh I’m an inadequate or this or that it’s not about you. God can do anything. Even if you’re the worst.

▶ 44:26 The dumbest. Amen. If God is in it if God is working in it. It’s going to be it’s going to work. This shall be a sign to you that I have sent you when you brought the people out of Egypt they you shall serve God on this mountain not serve Moses. Serve God. So you got the picture up there the baby you read it already the world doesn’t revolve around me that is such a funny look I love it. Last rule rule number six. After talking with pharaoh the second time. 14 times after that the Lord spoke to Moses in Egypt and Moses did not excuse himself he did not complain and he was out of questions.

What is the sixth rule?

▶ Watch this part (45:30)

Short answer: Obey the Lord your God—Moses did what God asked, even camped where Israel seemed trapped.

From the sermonTranscript of this part · Michael Silla

▶ 45:30 If you read the story and you read it and God is talking to Moses and it says the Lord said to Moses Moses did not reply he just did what God asked him to do. He just obeyed so rule number six is obey the Lord your God. Especially as young people sometimes we don’t understand it we don’t know why our friends get to have so much fun it looks so much fun or this or that but that’s why you just obey the Lord and when you’re older and you look back and you’re like oh I’m glad I did not do that. It makes a lot of sense. Exodus chapter 14 verse 1 the Lord spoke to Moses and said you shall camp before it by the sea he told Moses to take the people after they had been delivered from Egypt and camp at the sea at it and it was a a trap.

▶ 46:35 It was like a a point on the edge there and when you camp in that spot you can’t get out you’re trapped. And Moses he knew that. But there was no response from Moses saying this is going to be a trap God you can’t do this. He could have complained and could have said this is not the way we should do it but he didn’t do that. He had learned his lesson right. And the people it said that they did so. Now Moses did not know what God was going to do Moses had no idea that the red sea was going to park did you know that they camped at the sea Moses had no idea the people had no idea.

▶ 47:33 That that was going to be the solution and that the army was going to be defeated. No idea. And that goes back to obeying God. Sixth rule for life obey the Lord your God. And this was Moses’s statement so if you read the story I’m I started with Exodus chapter 3 and now we’re at Exodus chapter 14 and Moses at the beginning is giving excuses and he’s uh he’s got all these questions and he’s saying what about this and what about that well you’re doing it wrong but in Exodus chapter 14. He’s going into the trap and his answer to the people is do not be afraid stand still and see the salvation of the Lord which he will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians you will see them again no more forever and the Lord will fight for you and you shall hold your peace again he did not know anything about what was going to happen.

▶ 48:33 He’s standing there and they’re they see the cloud the pillar and they’re they’re standing there like all right God’s gonna do something I don’t know what it is. And of course if you remember the story you know God’s like what’s going to happen. And all of a sudden God says why are you looking at me. Tell him to go through the sea. It’s a great great uh miracle that God did he said lift up your rod stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it and the children of Israel will go on dry ground to the midst of the sea. And God brought about a great deliverance because the pete Moses and the people followed God followed the Lord and obedience is so important if you remember the scriptures it says Samuel was talking to Saul and he said obedience is better than sacrifice.

▶ 49:38 You know we come in and it’s a sacrifice to give praise and thanks to God but higher than that is obeying when you go home during the week are you obeying God are you following your conscience do you have a relationship with God are you dependent on people at the church to tell you you know you you can get the God’s word into your heart and in your mind that is the new covenant the new covenant is that he will write his word on your heart and in your mind. His law you’ve got to put the word into you so he can write it it’s not going to happen accidentally. So as the kids are dismissed during this prayer time we’re going to take some time to pray this morning. Miss woods if you could come and play a prayer song.

So God is asking us young people are we willing to work us old people everyone are we willing to work. With our own hands. Are we willing to respond to Christ with humility. Are we willing to stop excusing ourselves from believing growing and knowing God so whatever stage you are at if you’re someone who doesn’t who’s never accepted Christ are you going to keep excusing yourself oh well I don’t believe it because there’s so many problems in the Bible. Well you know what why don’t you just meet Jesus. And when you meet Jesus you’ll be like you’ll take a another second chance and be like wait a second maybe I read this wrong.

▶ 51:30 See when Jesus shows up and you feel the presence of God and he touches you that kind of answers some questions don’t you think. Are we making excuses about growing in God we have a lot of Christians that believe but are not growing. And are not knowing God and you’ve got to seek God if you want to know him if you want the Holy Spirit you’ve got to seek God for the Holy Spirit you’ve got to ask him to fill you with the Holy Spirit you’ve got to pray for it it says in the on the day of Pentecost they had been praying and tearing for 10 days straight before that Holy Spirit came it’s going to take some time and seeking God before the Holy Spirit will come. Do you want God to be with you. Like he was with Moses.

▶ 52:22 And are you willing to obey the Lord your God these are some of the rules for life and I think as fathers these are the kind of things that we teach our children to work. To respond right to not have excuses that’s a father thing don’t give me your ex I say that to my kids all the time don’t give me excuses. And are we willing to obey a good father will teach their children these things. So right now we’re going to. Read the lord’s prayer.
