Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
Believe on the Lord Jesus, and as He told the rich man, keep the commandments: worship God only, make no images, don’t take His name in vain, keep the Sabbath, work, and don’t covet. Don’t strain at gnats while neglecting justice and mercy—clean the inside first.

What is prayed?
Short answer: At Christmas, that Jesus, sent to deliver us from sin and give eternal life, is King of kings.
▶ 24:04 Lord we worship you this morning our heads bound. Lord Jesus we declare during this Christmas season Lord that you are the king of kings the Lord of lords God Jesus you were sent by God Lord to deliver us from sin and Lord to give us eternal life Jesus this morning Lord we surrender to you God Lord we commit ourselves to serve you and you alone Jesus we thank you this morning everyone said amen. We’re gonna dismiss the kids of this time. You may find your seats thank you for joining us we’re gonna get right into the word this morning again we want to thank you for joining us it’s good to be in God’s house amen. We spent some time worshiping we had a wonderful introduction by our our friend in washington d.c billy jackson thank you so much for sharing those scriptures excellent.
How do we get eternal life?
Short answer: God gave His Son that whoever believes should not perish; the jailer was told to believe—and they spoke the word to him.
▶ 25:06 This morning we’re going to be talking about eternal life. And Jesus said in John 3:16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life the angel said in Luke 2 verse 10 do not be afraid for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all the people for there is born to you this day in the city of David a savior who is Christ the Lord so in John Jesus speaks of himself and that whoever believes in him would have of everlasting life and the angels announced him and said a savior who is Christ the Lord and in that statement the angels give him three names his name is savior he saves us from our sin he is the messiah and he is Lord.
▶ 26:05 The jailer in Acts 16:29 he wanted to be saved and he said what must I do to be saved speaking to Paul and Silas and they replied and said believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved you and your household two three verses later. It says that they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in the house. So what is this word if Jesus Christ is the savior and he is Christ and he is the Lord did Jesus come to earth and just close his mouth and not say anything no. So when Paul and Silas say believe on the Lord Jesus Christ they’re also talking about his words. Not just his death on the cross for your sin but also the words that he spoke and the teaching that he taught that is very important.
Scripture in this part
John 3:16 (NKJV)
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
— John 3:16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:06 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Luke 2:10-11 (NKJV)
Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
— Luke 2:10-11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:06 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 16:30-32 (NKJV)
And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.
— Acts 16:30-32 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 26:05 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What did Jesus tell the rich man?
Short answer: If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments—no murder, adultery, theft or false witness; honor parents.
▶ 27:05 So what did Jesus say Matthew 19:16 the rich man came to Jesus and said what good things shall I do that I might have eternal life and Jesus’s reply was if you want to enter into life keep the commandments very plain simple he died on the cross to save you from your sin he died on the cross to cleanse you from your sin if you’re in a life of deep sin like Paul was or Saul of his name previously if you’re a big sinner and you got sin all throughout your life Jesus Christ and his blood is more powerful. Than your situation the depths of the sin that you’re in Jesus can pull you out. But once you’re pulled out just like we learned last week or the week before once you’re pulled out of the water you don’t jump back into the water you stay out you stay on the boat you stay on God and God’s kingdom and the way you do that is keeping his commandments.
▶ 28:14 Jesus uh the the rich ruler said which ones and that’s a good question I would ask him the same which ones the Old Testament’s a big book which ones and Jesus replies and he says you shall not murder you shall not commit adultery you shall not steal bear false witness and honor your father and your mother you shall love your neighbor as yourself and so he quotes here five of the ten commandments are the ten commandments for us today yes. Those ten commandments really make things simple and if we apply the ten commandments in America today we’d have a much different and better country. Thou shalt not steal that is a controversial topic today stealing how could that be.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 19:16-19 (NKJV)
Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
— Matthew 19:16-19 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 27:05 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What is adultery?
Short answer: Any sex outside marriage between a man and a woman is sin; families would be better if we obeyed.
▶ 29:09 Committing adultery uh any kind of sex out of marriage is sin marriage between a man and a woman it’s sin it’s it’s wrong it’s immoral. If we followed God’s commandment we’d have a different state in America families in America would be much better off we know that data shows us it’s better for uh children to have a mother and a father. That’s clear. But we don’t promote it and teach it so which ones did he leave out number one Exodus chapter 20 verse 3 you shall have no other gods before me the Lord our God is one it says in Deuteronomy 6:4 I am the Lord who brought you out of Egypt it wasn’t some other God it wasn’t the calf that they made it was God on high in Deuteronomy 6:13 fear the Lord and serve him only.
Can we serve other gods too?
Short answer: No—God is jealous; worship and serve Him only.
▶ 30:13 God wants ex he wants exclusivity. He says I am a jealous God you can’t be serving uh uh Buddha over here and the Hindu god over here and the egyptian gods over here and me no no no no no me only he’s jealous serve him only. Past presidents have both said and both parties have said that all roads lead to the same God it’s not true. And to get an example of this we’re going to look at the Devil and Jesus when the Devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness after he was baptized Matthew chapter 4 verse 8 the Devil took him up on an exceedingly high mountain he showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and he said to them all these things I will give you if you’ll fall down and worship me and Jesus’s reply was.
▶ 31:11 It is written you shall worship the Lord your God and him only will you serve so Jesus is quoting the Old Testament Jesus quoted the Old Testament all the time and you got to remember that we can’t throw out the Old Testament especially the stuff that he’s talking about. You know testament is very important. But here the Devil is uh. If the Devil has any salt and any Devil worth their devleness. He won it he used something that Christ wanted. Christ wants us he wants people so the Devil is offering people unto Jesus saying here I’ll give them to you. And he’s trying to in exchange get Jesus to praise him.
▶ 32:07 And God is asking us this morning what is our price what are we willing to exchange. For God. Is our price. Are we willing to serve a person pastor a scientist a businessman maybe some educator a religion instead of God. If they give us freedom to sin if they give us or say that it’s okay to love money or possess or money possessions or is that what we’re willing to exchange for God if the government says oh we’ll change the laws to whatever you want and approve. Is that what we’re willing to exchange for God’s laws and for God himself I submit to you today we need to be like job and serve God no matter what.
Scripture in this part
Exodus 20:3-5 (NKJV)
“You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
— Exodus 20:3-5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 30:13Matthew 4:10 (NKJV)
Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
— Matthew 4:10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 31:11 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What about images?
Short answer: Don’t make carved images—even the cross we don’t bow to; don’t change God’s glory into an image.
▶ 33:06 Number two Exodus chapter 20 verse 4 you shall not make for yourself you shall not make for yourself the carved image in different churches you go into you’ll see images that are uh made and and we can’t do that. Even the cross we don’t bow down to the cross we bow down to the one who died on the cross and the one who rose from the grave and he is invisible in our case you know if he was if we were back there 2000 years ago yeah we could bow down to Jesus but we’re not Jesus is alive he’s living but he’s invisible you cannot be bowing down to images and graven images. Romans chapter 1 22 talking about the unrighteous and ungodly men and women who suppress and hinder the truth in unrighteousness.
▶ 34:04 He says that professing to be wise they become fools and change the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man so whether it’s the image of a person whether it’s an image of an actual uh physical thing whatever it is we cannot change the glory of our incorruptible God in heaven for an image we ex they exchange the truth of God for the lie and they worshiped and served the creature rather than the creator and I would submit to you today that this is what America has trouble with we want to serve the creature rather than the creator. Uh and what we have trouble with is serving ourselves we are the creature that we love so much you know what am I gonna have today what am I uh what do what is gonna please me today what do I want to do that I’m not going to live by any moral law I’m going to do whatever I want to do and we serve ourselves.
▶ 35:14 Uh when I hear you know. How the world talks and thinks they’re always talking about how we’re we’re going to evolve we’re we’re evolving to be a more uh capable species. You know when you sit back we are nothing okay Jesus Christ God in heaven he made us. And we he holds everything together. We cannot serve the creature we cannot serve ourselves over God number three. Exodus 20 verse 7 you shall not take the name of your the Lord your God in vain worthless spain means worthless to understand that we’re going to look at Isaiah chapter 4 verse 1. In that day seven women shall take hold of one man saying we will eat our own food where our own apparel only let us be called by your name to take away our reproach.
Scripture in this part
Exodus 20:4 (NKJV)
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
— Exodus 20:4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 33:06 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Romans 1:22-23 (NKJV)
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.
— Romans 1:22-23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 34:04 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What is taking His name in vain?
Short answer: Calling ourselves Christians, then breaking His law and hurting people.
▶ 36:20 And this simply means. Maybe we want to be called the Christian today because we’ll say oh if I say I’m a Christian then I’m going to heaven I heard it yesterday you know nobody’s going to hell we’re all going to heaven why because God loves us he loves everyone even even murderers he said yeah he named a murderer jeffrey dahmer and gone he’s gone to heaven. There’s no there’s no responsibility there’s no recompense for sin. It’s not true you cannot just take on the name of Christ to just take his name and reject everything else about him the these ladies said and you know it’s not just ladies it’s men too we eat our own food Jesus said that he is the bread of life amen Jesus said to the Devil he said man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God it is God’s word it is Jesus himself they’re saying I we reject you.
▶ 37:24 Jesus God we’re going to keep eating our own food taking our own opinion believing in what we want to believe. And also we’re going to wear our own apparel we don’t want. To praise you we’re coming to church we don’t praise God. We won’t wear the robes of righteousness. But we want to wear our own apparel. And that is not right another example in Proverbs 30 and verse 9. Giving you the poverty nor riches lest thou be full and deny you and say who is the Lord or lest I be poor and steal and profane in the name of the Lord you see when we break God’s commandment we uh discredit his name.
▶ 38:21 When we say we are Christians and then go break his law go hurt people that is taking his name in vain amen. Luke chapter 6 verse 46 why do you call me Lord Lord and do not do the things which I say. Matthew 7:22 many will say to me in that day Lord Lord and I will declare them I never knew you you depart from me you practice lawlessness it is important for us to understand that we have to follow Jesus Christ follow his word obey him we cannot just take the name of being a Christian just take a name only a cayenne. As I know Christian and name only.
Scripture in this part
Exodus 20:7 (NKJV)
“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
— Exodus 20:7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 36:20Luke 6:46 (NKJV)
“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
— Luke 6:46 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 38:21 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Matthew 7:22-23 (NKJV)
Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
— Matthew 7:22-23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 38:21 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How do we keep the Sabbath holy?
Short answer: Don’t take time off to sin; Jesus went to the synagogue; your body is God’s holy temple.
▶ 39:16 Amen. Do not take the lord’s name in vain Exodus chapter 20 verse 8 remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. We don’t take time off to sin and keep it holy we don’t take time off to go and sin amen remember the Sabbath day and keep it all if you’re going on vacation or you have the Sabbath day off you’re you know you have today off church is Sunday Sabbath is actually Saturday we keep it holy we don’t go out sin and live against God’s word and go and do what we want we live according to the word Luke chapter 4 16 Jesus Christ our example it says as is custom was he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read so first it was routine it was his custom he always did it every week it is important for us to be in the house of God at every week.
▶ 40:19 He went he had to go I picked up two young boys this morning they had to get up and they came out and they’re looking at me like what are you doing here so early. But they came Jesus he went into the synagogue to the church and he stood up to read he had something to share something to say remember we bring something with us when we come amen. Leviticus 19:30 you will keep my Sabbath and reverence my sanctuary I am the Lord. And. What is his sanctuary. We know what his sanctuary is in first Corinthians 3 verse 16. Do you not know that you you. Are the temple of God and that the spirit of God dwells in you.
▶ 41:16 If anyone defiles the temple of God God will destroy him for the temple of God is holy which temple you are and this is talking about sexual immorality if you’re going to take your temple you. And and go and commit sexual immorality you’re taking what God has made holy and you’re defiling it and God is going to say hey that that doesn’t work and when you stand before him after you die he’s going to say no depart from me you worker of lawlessness. We are his sanctuary. In Hebrews chapter 10 verse 24 it says forsake not the assembling of yourselves together even the more so as you see the day approaching it also says let us come together in order to stir up one another to love and to good works so the Sabbath day we keep it holy we come in we’re we’re not here uh influencing people to sin right we’re here to stir up one another to love to good works to follow God to serve him amen.
Scripture in this part
Exodus 20:8 (NKJV)
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
— Exodus 20:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 39:16 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Luke 4:16 (NKJV)
So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
— Luke 4:16 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 40:191 Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV)
If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.
— 1 Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 41:16 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does God say about work?
Short answer: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat—get an education or job skill and set goals.
▶ 42:26 Keep it holy. And the second part of this fourth commandment is six days shall you work and do all your labor and second Thessalonians chapter 3 verse 10 if any would not work neither should he eat that is God’s position on work if you are able to work get out and work. I have to work you guys have all worked what’s wrong with everybody else. My goodness you know even if you have if you don’t make that much money still get out there and work. Young people. Scriptures say to prepare yourself.
▶ 43:20 Get an education. Get job training get an apprenticeship do something find a way to prepare yourself for when you’re older you can’t go to college and get a music degree and say okay I’m ready to to work now no there’s no there’s no jobs for music people oh that’s my passion. I heard a statement from someone he said don’t follow your passion take it with you and I was like okay that’s nice because everybody’s saying follow your passion you’ll never work a day in your life. But you gotta understand the other side there may not be job openings for your passion okay if you’ve got a passion to play basketball they were passing to play football or a passion to be some music artist there are only so many job openings for those things.
▶ 44:17 Amen. But I’ll tell you what if you go to the bureau of labor statistics and look up all the the jobs that are hot coming in the next 10 years in the next 20 years you can find out where to put your effort and your uh your time into when I was 12 years old somebody approached me and said do you know what you’re going to do. So I had to look in a book and I read and I was like okay I want to do that and you know I could have done anything I could have done accounting I could have done electricity I could have done a lot of things but you you set a goal you aim for that goal and you you hit part of it you know I hit some of it I’m not what I plan to be but I I was in the field and I’m doing fine amen set a goal the saying is if you aim for nothing you’ll hit it every time.
▶ 45:15 Right young people if you have no goals if you aim for nothing you’re gonna you’re gonna hit it every time. And so remember when you go out to prepare yourself make sure that you’re getting a job skill and I I’ll have to explain that again to you so you understand that but if you go to college for a music degree that is not a job skill okay that is something else. Here a guy who was famous for uh you know he’s homeless and the government pays him like 600 a month or something so he gets his drugs from the government he lives homeless and he’s just like I’m happy. And you got to know that we’re we’re paying for that you know when the go when you say government that’s really us we’re spent we’re paying for this guy uh to live this way we’re enabling people to live in sin and people you also have to decide if you’re going to take the bribe the bribe to live in sin.
Scripture in this part
2 Thessalonians 3:10 (NKJV)
For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.
— 2 Thessalonians 3:10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 42:26 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What was the rich man’s problem?
Short answer: Coveting—the love of money is a root of all evil.
▶ 46:27 And not do God’s command which is what work. And then we come to the fifth the last commandment that Jesus did not mention and that is covet and that’s what this rich man had a problem with he shall not covet your neighbor’s house first Timothy 6:10 for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil and Jesus said go sell all that you have and give to the poor and come and follow me come follow me. Get rid of your distractions come and follow me but he went away sorrowful for he had great possessions he was not willing. To redirect his love to God to Christ that was his problem and because of one commandment for one commandment he rejected eternal life and many people are rejecting eternal life Jesus and God for one commandment so whether it’s stealing whether it’s sexual immorality whatever it is in your life you know if we’re a homosexual transgender sex outside of marriage cheating on your spouse beast yeah all the it’s sexual things that are wrong.
Scripture in this part
1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
— 1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 46:27 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What are the weightier matters?
Short answer: Justice, mercy and faith; the chief priests strained at Judas’s silver yet murdered an innocent man.
▶ 47:52 Are we going to reject God and eternal life over that one thing that we disagree with. We want to look to the scribes we’re going to turn our attention to the weightier matters of the law and this is where a lot of us in America have trouble. Matthew 23:23 Jesus is talking to the scribes and Pharisees and he says you hypocrites. You paid tithe and mint tithe of mint and annas and cumin and have neglected the weightier matters of the law so he’s setting him up right now he’s talking about how they’re they’re they they follow God and these little things. But not in the big stuff justice mercy and faith blind God they wouldn’t believe on Jesus Christ they wouldn’t have mercy on Jesus himself and they were not just and we will see that in just a minute.
▶ 48:57 Blind guides who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel they’re over here straining at a gnat and they swallow a camel learn what that means. That the example is when Judas who betrayed Jesus Christ in Matthew 27 verse 3 he was remorseful. He said I he came to them he said I have sinned by betraying innocent blood so he is admitting that what he did was wrong but he’s talking to the wrong people you know you don’t bring your sins to a person you don’t bring your sins to a man. You bring your sins and your your your prayer to who to God to Christ. And they said to him what is that to us you see to it and as you know he threw down the silver he departed and went and hanged him so couldn’t handle the guilt.
▶ 50:00 But this is the problem the chief priests they took the silver and they said it is not lawful to put this money into the treasury because they are the price of blood and so here the scribes and Pharisees are the chief I’m sorry the chief priests the chief priests had just cried out crucified Jesus. They had just brought false witnesses to give false witness of Jesus Christ. So they were lying and they were murderers. But they’re gonna keep this law over here about where the money should go. It is not lawful. It is not lawful that we should take this money.
▶ 50:54 We’re we’re gonna follow this law. But when it comes to this innocent man who has done nothing worthy of death even Pilate said it himself they killed him murdered him crucified him and they are blind to this. And we today in America we got our fringe topics that we want to focus on up here oh oh the climate oh this down here all we gotta give to this uh what about doing what is right what about righteousness and justice no we throw that out. The weightier matters of the law as the worship team comes.

Short answer: First clean the inside of the cup—a new heart and your own relationship with Christ.
