Deeper Than the Skin — June 5, 2022: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
The skin guards the body, but infection gets in through wounds; sin likewise takes root when Satan gets a foothold, going deeper than the skin. Evil comes from the heart. Like Naaman and the leper Jesus touched, come to Him to be cleansed inside and offer yourself a living sacrifice.
How does the service open?

Jesus we pray Lord Jesus that God we would hold fast tightly Jesus to that word Lord no matter what the world says Jesus Lord that we would take the word of God to people and Lord God not be discouraged not be discouraged by the kingdom of darkness not be discouraged by even other Christians but Lord the word is so powerful and so important and a priority thing that you have for people God Lord Jesus please stir it up in our hearts Jesus Lord stir it up in us your people Lord to take the word of God to the world to our city Jesus please we ask this in your name thank you Jesus.

Scripture in this part
Psalm 132:13 (NKJV)
For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place:
— Psalm 132:13 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 0:01 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Acts 6:3 (NKJV)
Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business;
— Acts 6:3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 23:38 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What sets people free?
Short answer: The word of God and sharing the gospel; good works are the evidence of faith.
▶ 30:11 Jesus Lord you have that desire as a young man God. Lord Jesus we pray that you put that in our hearts. Jesus we ask this in your name we thank you everyone said amen you may find your seats this morning. You know there’s a a church culture in America that says well I’m just going to let my light shine and they’re going to see Christ in me and I’m just going to live my life and be a good person. And let that be the testimony and I hear that so many times from Christians.
Why talk about the skin?
Short answer: We are fearfully and wonderfully made; the skin hosts trillions of bacteria yet guards against infection.
▶ 31:09 But it’s the word of God that sets people free it’s not our kindness it’s not our our good works are the evidence of our faith but it’s. Sharing the gospel amen and sharing the gospel. We’d like to thank you for joining us those online those in the room it’s good to be in God’s house amen. We’re going this is a very uh a very basic message but it’s from the Old Testament. And. I think it’s important this simple example that God uses. Is very important. So we’re going to get into this this message is called deeper than the skin the skin. Is 15.
▶ 32:02 Of the average person’s body weight contains more than a 11 miles of blood vessels and I bring that up because uh God made our bodies fearfully we are fearfully and wonderfully made the Bible says and when I see things like this whether it’s the eyeball whether it’s the ear whether it’s the mouth the nose when we investigate the brain all these things are fearfully and wonderfully made they weren’t just thrown together mashed together it is amazing the body that God created for us there’s 11 miles of blood vessels and as you touch yourself you can feel your hand right you touch something you can feel that thing you can feel the hairs on your on your hand you can feel because of how God created your body to sense things feel things the skin is amazing it renews itself every 28 days.
▶ 33:03 The skin is home to more than one thousand species of bacteria. That’s wonderful isn’t it it has at least five different types of receptors that respond to pain and touch so the reason why you feel pain is because you got sensors in your skin imagine if you didn’t feel pain you just thought you just keep hurting yourself but the the skin is there to let you know hey this is bad cut it out I’m going to make you feel some pain. Changes in your skin can sometimes signal changes in your health the skin protects it regulates it senses the world. Without it you would be exposed to the elements. I found something else also the skin forms a barrier against microbes.
▶ 33:56 More than 1.5. Trillion bacteria. Live on the skin 1.5 trillion can you believe that. In some wet places tens of millions of microbes live in every square centimeter of skin. Major the majority of them are useful and harmless so there’s good bacteria we know that. And they prevent harmful bacteria on your skin from ever getting their feet in the door but my son when he was a little baby he had eczema and it was pretty bad when he was a baby and uh one day there was something else. You know not it wasn’t eczema and we thought I thought it was eczema but it wasn’t it was these little pimples on his feet and I was looking I’m like man that does not look good and you know he had developed a staph infection and so he had to be treated for that and I was like man steph he was a he was a mess you know if it wasn’t eczema it was something else he.
Scripture in this part
Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
— Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 32:02 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How does sin get in?
Short answer: Like infection through a wound—don’t give Satan a foothold to establish himself.
▶ 35:04 But he’s so he was so cute as a baby but you got to watch out. Sin I’m sorry affection infection can get into the body now what is this. Uh what am I talking about here spiritually in Genesis 4 verse 7 if you do well God’s talking to Cain will you not be accepted if you do not do well sin lies at the door and its desire is for you but you should rule over it and just like bacteria 1.5 trillion bacteria living on your skin this Satan and sin are lying at your door knocking at the door trying to get in Ephesians 4:27 do not give the Devil a foothold do not give him an opportunity do not give him a place do not give.
▶ 35:59 A place for him to to grab on and hang on and establish himself young people this is very important. You know you’re going to mess up in life but you don’t let Satan get a foothold you got to deal with the sin you got to deal with Satan in your life you don’t want it to fester. Amen. And so the Old Testament talks about leprosy and leprosy is a bacteria it can be transmitted through saliva mucus and I’ve got armadillos here because for some reason armadillos are the ones that carry it. The poor are susceptible. The symptoms can take five to twenty years to develop. It spreads at a snail’s pace in your body it spreads it’s very slow but if you don’t take care of it the effects are pretty bad they’ve got somebody’s foot here has been chewed away this lady here it’s affecting her eyes and if she doesn’t get it taken care of it’s going to hurt her face more this lady on the right she’s lost some all her fingers and toes and there’s much worse pictures of leprosy and its effects.
Scripture in this part
Ephesians 4:27 (NKJV)
nor give place to the devil.
— Ephesians 4:27 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 35:59 (quoted; reference not named in the message)1 Peter 5:8-9 (NKJV)
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
— 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 37:22 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What does Leviticus say of a sore deeper than the skin?
Short answer: The priest examined it; if deeper than the skin, it was leprosy—like sin taking root.
▶ 37:23 It’s not very contagious they say 95 percent of people are immune to it and uh but you can get it from you know if somebody in your house has it and you’re you know swapping stuff. Mucus you know sneezing you can get it so yeah it’s not very contagious but you can get it from somebody it takes six to twelve months to cure it with treatment you have to have a a multi-antibiotic treatment to address. Leprosy but back in Bible times they didn’t have no antibiotics. All right they didn’t have any answers for this. You didn’t have medicine to deal with it now you do. It’s relatively new I would say in the 1970s or 80s that came out with a treatment for leprosy there’s less than 200 cases per year in the u.s so going to the Bible in Leviticus chapter 13 we find the doctrine on leprosy when a man has on the skin of his body a swelling a scab or a bright spot and becomes on the skin of his body like a leprous sore he shall be brought to the priest.
▶ 38:38 And the priest shall examine the sore on the skin of the body if the hair on the sore has turned white the sword appears to be deeper than the skin of his body it is a leprosaur. And the priest shall examine him and then pronounce him unclean. So of course here. If you think about it in a spiritual sense you know this is talking about sin. You know this is talking about Satan getting through the spiritual protection that you have you’ve ma we’ve made an opportunity for him to come in and he is deeper than the skin now and he’s taken a foothold and that’s what we don’t want see this this example of leprosy is talking about your spirit your spiritual life first Peter 5:8 be sober be vigilant your adversary the Devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour he’s at the door like we talked about earlier he’s on the skin and he’s trying he’s finding his opportunity to get through and trying to take his foothold resist him.
▶ 39:52 Be steadfast in the faith knowing that the sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world all of us all Christians throughout America and through the world are going through this. Having to defend themselves against Satan we all have to resist him amen. In Galatians chapter 5 17 the flesh lust against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh and these are contrary to one another so that they do so that you do the things that you. So that you do not do the things that you wish so you have Satan and you have the flesh flesh wants to get in uh the flesh wants you to do things. Let’s see sexual immorality you’re a creative sexual being right and you got desires and and uh you know your flesh wants to sin your flesh wants to feel good that’s why people take drugs or you’re you’re sad about something so you go reach you want to feel good you like the feel good drugs or whatever it is your flesh is going to have a desire for that thing.
Scripture in this part
Leviticus 13:3 (NKJV)
The priest shall examine the sore on the skin of the body; and if the hair on the sore has turned white, and the sore appears to be deeper than the skin of his body, it is a leprous sore. Then the priest shall examine him, and pronounce him unclean.
— Leviticus 13:3 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 38:38 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How do we keep a spiritual immune system?
Short answer: Read the Bible, pray and come to church, before sin becomes spiritual disease.
▶ 41:04 And if you let it get in and you don’t deal with it. It’s going to turn into a spiritual disease. That. Over time. Hurts you and harms and just has a horrible effect on your life and will destroy your relationship with Jesus Christ. But it’s important to remember you have Christians that are on one side you know that really get down on themselves for messing up you’re gonna mess up but don’t let Satan or the flesh get a foothold just deal with it get up get the scab you know let your body heal itself resist Satan. Your immune system also is is fighting against.
▶ 42:00 Diseases in your body just like you’ve got to keep a good immune system in your spiritual man. There’s things you can do reading the Bible praying. Coming to church all these spiritual tools are important to keeping a good immune system for your spiritual man. Satan moves slow or he he’ll move whatever pace your he can affect you. But you’ve got to deal with it. Leprosy moves slow over time it will have great damage. On your spiritual man sin and Satan but we have to address that infection is it a lie that you’re believing is it a person that you’re following is it a sin that you’re not getting out here whatever it is you’ve got to address it.
Where does defilement come from?
Short answer: Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, thefts, pride and foolishness; clean the inside of the cup.
▶ 42:58 Jesus Christ in mark chapter 7 verse 21 he goes on to explain a little more about this he says out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts adulteries fornications murders thefts covetousness. Wickedness deceit lewdness an evil eye blasphemy pride foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man and so somewhere. That lust or desire or Satan himself with his words his lies you know Satan comes with lies of what do we got here deceit. You know he’s deceiving somebody else they tell you the word they got from Satan and everybody’s deceived now and pretty soon it got through your spiritual protection and it’s trying to take a foothold.
▶ 43:53 Right. Just outright thefts because you want something that somebody else has. Pride. Satan is good with that foolishness. I mean when you’re young and dumb you just do all kinds of foolish things but it all comes from within. And we have to deal what is within. It may seem like nothing’s happening. Because things take time to fester. But we got we have to deal with it it may take years to develop the symptoms like leprosy does. But if you don’t deal with it it’ll cause great damage to your spiritual man Luke chapter 11 39.
▶ 44:47 The Lord said to him now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness foolish ones did not he who made the outside make the inside also. And so here we’re we’re understanding through this example of leprosy that it’s not just about a physical disease it’s also about something that is getting through to the inward part to the inner man and infecting us from the inside. And Jesus Christ is explaining to these Pharisees he’s explaining to the world that you’ve got to deal with the inner man. You’ve got to deal with your heart and your mind. You can’t just let things go.
Scripture in this part
Mark 7:21-23 (NKJV)
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
— Mark 7:21-23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 42:58 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Luke 11:39-40 (NKJV)
Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also?
— Luke 11:39-40 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 44:47 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What did the leper have to do?
Short answer: Cry unclean and live apart—sin must be confronted so people repent.
▶ 45:46 Leviticus chapter 13 45 one of the rules. Uh of being a leper I mean. Becoming a leper. If you were unclean he shall be unclean all the days that he has is sore he shall be unclean he shall dwell alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp and so God is using this leprosy example. Uh. To talk about a spiritual example first Corinthians 5:11 and it says this in multiple places in the New Testament I’ve written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother. Who is sexually immoral covetous idolatry reviler drunkard extortion not even to eat with such a person and we see here that the leprosy example is talking about uh the brethren that are sinning and not dealing.
▶ 46:50 With the sin or Satan in their lives somewhere you got to say hey you know what you’re doing is wrong. Uh you need to change your life. You need to repent. And if somebody said I’m okay how I am no it’s not true that’s not the truth. And first Corinthians 5:11 has many there’s quite a few five or more that say something very similar to that. So it’s not just about a natural disease it’s an illustration of what to do with sin and your life and others lie uh Christian other Christians lives of brothers and sisters Leviticus 14:2 this shall be the law of a leper for the day of his cleansing he shall be brought to the priest the priest shall go out of the camp and shall examine him and the priest shall command to take for him who is to be cleansed two living and clean birds wood scarlet and hyssop the scarlet is that scarlet worm the dye that they used to use hyssop if you remember hyssop was used in uh.
▶ 48:09 When they. On the Passover night right when God commanded them to slay a lamb he said take the blood and put it on the doorpost of your heart of your of your house and it’ll protect you from the the death angel. So there was a law that God created for cleansing. In the New Testament Jesus says something very important Luke chapter 4 24 he says I say to you no prophet is accepted in his own country. Many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet and none of them none of them. Were cleansed except Naaman the syrian the syrian who was not even part of Israel the syrian who is not part of Judah he was not part of God’s people he came and he got healing.
Scripture in this part
Leviticus 13:45-46 (NKJV)
“Now the leper on whom the sore is, his clothes shall be torn and his head bare; and he shall cover his mustache, and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ He shall be unclean. All the days he has the sore he shall be unclean. He is unclean, and he shall dwell alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.
— Leviticus 13:45-46 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 45:46 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Exodus 12:7 (NKJV)
And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.
— Exodus 12:7 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 48:09 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Why was Naaman cleansed?
Short answer: Of many lepers only Naaman, who washed in the Jordan, was cleansed and wanted to give God a gift.
▶ 49:11 Of his leprosy. And Jesus said no nobody else was getting healing. There were many lepers in the time of Elisha the prophet none of them were cleansed except Naaman why because they would not accept Elisha as the prophet and it’s the same way with Jesus Christ well we go to him Jesus Christ has the power to heal so many things. In our lives and we refuse will we refuse to go to him. Naaman’s response in second Kings 5 15 he says I know that there is no God in all the earth except Israel. And that’s a great response a syrian who was not part of Judah not part of Israel is surrendering to God and saying I know now there’s no God on all the earth not back in my hometown with all their gods and their temples to whoever.
▶ 50:14 This is the real God. And he said take a gift from your servant he wanted to give a gift he wanted to offer God a gift and that is very important as we’ll see later. So the Jews rejected. Elisha. And Jesus himself when he came they would not go to him for solutions they did not believe in Jesus. And we have medicine for many physical ailments today but the mind is one of the most vague areas right God Jesus Christ many many of us many people are struggling with their minds.
Scripture in this part
Luke 4:27 (NKJV)
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
— Luke 4:27 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 49:11 (quoted; reference not named in the message)2 Kings 5:14-15 (NKJV)
So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. And he returned to the man of God, he and all his aides, and came and stood before him; and he said, “Indeed, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel; now therefore, please take a gift from your servant.”
— 2 Kings 5:14-15 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 50:14 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How did the leper approach Jesus?
Short answer: He worshiped and said if You are willing; Jesus touched him and told him to offer the gift Moses commanded.
▶ 51:06 They have all kinds of problems in their mind and Jesus Christ can heal your mind your mind you may be going through depression anxiety I mean there’s the list goes on they’ve got so many things. That they could say is wrong with you disorders and such but do we go to Jesus Christ. To find healing for our mind do we go to Jesus Christ to find healing for our bodies. Or do we reject him. Matthew 8 chapter 2 behold a leper came and worshiped him saying Lord if you are willing you can make me clean.
▶ 52:08 And this leper is approaching Jesus and the right way and just like this morning we came and worshiped him if you didn’t if you didn’t worship God this morning I encourage you next time you have opportunity you have an opportunity right now you have an opportunity later today today is a day of salvation you don’t have to wait. You can come to God but you got to come his way this leper understood that he’s not going to get anything out of Christ if he comes to him saying you need to heal me. You owe me. Or this one why did you make me this way. It’s your fault Jesus he could have blamed him right. But he came he worshipped him humbled himself he said Lord if you’re willing you can make me clean.
▶ 53:02 And Jesus put out his hand and touched him don’t you want to be touched by Jesus. Don’t you want him to put out his hand to you especially young people as young people you know when I was a young person in in teens and growing up in youth group man I wanted to touch Jesus. Because when you experience and man you’re like wow I want that to happen again but you’ve got to come we have to come we got to humble ourselves before Jesus Christ. Jesus said I am willing be cleansed and immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus says to him. Go your way show yourself to the priests and offer the gift that Moses commanded as a testimony to them.
▶ 53:57 And this is important. Because the priests at this time. You know this this offering was probably put away in the in the back the law for the offering was put away in the back and hiding in on dust and this guy comes up and he starts to offer the birds the wood the cedar wood the scarlet and the hyssop and they’re look they’re like. What is this. And the guy’s like this is the offering I’m supposed to give for being cleansed of my leprosy what. Your cleanses of your leprosy you had leprosy you had leprosy. Take a few steps back.
▶ 54:51 Yes I had leprosy. Well how do you how are you cleansed Jesus Christ cleanse me. And see this is how we have to deal if Satan does get a foothold in your life if sin does get a foothold in your life and things begin to fester. It’s not the end of the world. Jesus Christ can heal anything. He can go from the inside out and change. And heal. And do his great work in your life. No matter how bad it’s gotten. He can take it all back. Naaman. He was in bad shape.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 8:2-4 (NKJV)
And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
— Matthew 8:2-4 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 52:08 (quoted; reference not named in the message)How do we respond to cleansing?
Short answer: Present your body a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable—your reasonable service.
▶ 55:44 They told him go wash in the Jordan he did it and he was says his his skin became like a young man again. Beautiful. Amen. And Jesus Christ can restore whatever has happened to you whatever thing you let happen to you whatever foothold you let happen in your life whether it was sin or Satan Jesus Christ can heal it restore it but we have to go to him. Romans 12 chapter 1. What is our offering. I beseech you therefore brethren that you present yourselves. Your bodies a living sacrifice.
▶ 56:38 Holy and acceptable to God which is your reasonable service. See God comes and he cleanses the inner man he comes and he has the power to get Satan and sin and cleanse you get all that out of your life and what is our response in turn we offer ourselves. A living sacrifice. Holy and acceptable to God. Amen. I mean did you hear that I I’m hearing that for the first time that’s great. I mean. You mean I can’t just do whatever I want. Jesus forgive me today oh I’m gonna go sin again Jesus forgive me again oh I’m gonna go sin again no what is your offering and your sacrifice to Jesus Christ.
▶ 57:42 How are you responding. To Jesus Christ. All those out there all you Christians in the world when Jesus came and saved you and cleansed you from sin and forgave you what is your response did you offer the gift. Of your life. As a living sacrifice holy and acceptable. To God. Ephesians chapter 5 25 says just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her that he might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word of God that word is so important don’t throw out the word of God.
▶ 58:35 You know I’m not just up here speaking today to speak no I’m sharing God’s word and when you put it in you something’s gonna happen. There’s gonna be a change. And Jesus goes on it says that Jesus that he might present her to himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that she should be holy without. Blemish and I bring up this scripture because we’re talking about leprosy and God wants to cleanse it get it out and that church is going to be a glorious church without the leprosy without any blemish without any spot or wrinkle. And you say I can’t happen no Jesus can make it happen. Hebrews chapter 4 16 let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Romans 12:1 (NKJV)
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
— Romans 12:1 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 56:38 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What is God asking?

Wherever you’re at whatever stage you’re at if you’ve let Satan take a foothold if you let sin and flesh take off the desires of your flesh take a foothold and your life to where it is uh it’s festering. The Bible says that first there’s lust and then that lust turns into sin and when sin is full grown it is death and that is exactly what happens with leprosy it may take a long time but still the end of leprosy is going to is harm. And we’ve got to deal with it. So we’re going to take some time here this morning to worship to seek God.
