Becoming Disciples - October 1, 2023: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
The message defines a disciple as someone disciplined who follows Jesus’ teaching and does the Father’s will. From the rich man and Lazarus it teaches that hell is real, success won’t get you to heaven, and repentance is the key; Paul’s words to Felix on righteousness, self-control and judgment are the message the world needs. It closes with Job’s steps and forgiving those who wronged us.

— Revelation 4:10-11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 11:59 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Why invite the Holy Spirit?

John 16:8 (NKJV)
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
— John 16:8 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 18:30 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What did Jesus command in Matthew 28?
Short answer: Make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all things He commanded; and He is with us always.
▶ 22:56 Morning. We’re going to go on in Jesus being important to all I think uh there’s some handouts if you’d like to follow along everybody has one thank you miss Woods and uh Matthew 28:19 says make disciples of all nations baptizing them teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you and lo I am with you always even to the end of the age uh you can pause for a moment um can we get them a a handout so they can just follow along in the back. There I am with you always even to the end of the age and so God has a goal for his people for the disciples his goal for his disciples uh is to go and make disciples not to uh go and make believers not to go make friends but make disciples and disciples of who disciples of Christ.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
— Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 22:56What is a disciple?
Short answer: Very simply, someone who is disciplined, takes on the teaching and follows it; whoever does the will of the Father is His brother, sister and mother.
▶ 24:09 Very simple as a disciple is somebody who’s disciplined who uh takes on the teaching and will follow it very simple Matthew 12:49 he stretched out his hand toward his disciples and said whoever does the will everybody say that word will will will of my father in heaven is my brother sister and mother and we learned a couple weeks ago that we are the children of God amen and so uh Christ is God’s son we’re his you know he says it right here whoever does the will of my father is my brother sister and mother so he is confirming it right. Here 1 Thessalonians 4:3 says this is the will of God you can that’s this will be your homework you can take this scripture home and you can read about what is the will of God talks about abstaining from sexual immorality.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 12:49-50 (NKJV)
And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
— Matthew 12:49-50 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 24:091 Thessalonians 4:4-5 (NKJV)
that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;
— 1 Thessalonians 4:4-5 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:06What should we rejoice in?
Short answer: Not that spirits are subject to us, but that our names are written in heaven, the book of life.
▶ 25:07 Um that you each know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor not in passion of lust like the world who do not know God but uh exercising some control we’ll get into that a little later Revelations 20:4 as we learned last last week all not found written in the book of life were cast into the lake of fire I do not want to go in the lake of fire how about you no thank you no I do not want to be going to the lake of fire.
▶ 25:44 Amen and uh this scripture also mentions that there is a book and in Luke 10:19 says that behold I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you rejoice not that your spirits that the spirits are subject unto you but because your names are written in heaven and so Jesus is saying something here to his disciples he’s saying hey first of all your names are written in heaven oh my gosh well thank you for confirming sometimes we’re get down on ourselves and we get upset and we’re like oh gosh and the disciples made mistakes and Peter did Christ and you know everybody’s making all these mistakes and Christ says hey your names are written okay Bible says we’re like a tree and whether you’re in the ground and you’re sprouting under the earth or you’re just a little sprout that’s weak and you’re not bearing fruit or you’re you’re a yearling and you’re you don’t have any fruit on you or you’re a mature tree God loves you and accepts you at every stage but the goal and the point is keep.
Scripture in this part
Revelation 20:15 (NKJV)
And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
— Revelation 20:15 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:07Luke 10:19-20 (NKJV)
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
— Luke 10:19-20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 25:44Should we approve of our sin?
Short answer: No; it isn’t helpful, it’s killing you. You may mess up seventy times seven, but get back to the cross and ask God to cleanse you.
▶ 26:58 Growing don’t stop and don’t approve of your sin don’t say oh no well I need the sin in my life because it’s it’s helpful no it’s not helpful it’s killing you. Amen now you may mess up 100 times 7 * 7 God says but you get back there at the cross and say God I need you to cleanse. Me I need to. Change we get into this uh thing where we want to approve and our sin and make an excuse but God is not saying that that’s not God’s way it’s hey give it to God repent turn from it you do it again do the same thing amen keep. Growing behold I give you and here uh he also says something else very important I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpins and over all the power of the enemy all the power so Satan and his demon demons if somebody’s got you fixated on the kingdom of darkness like they’re the big bad people and they’re always uh you know suppressing you and it’s true it’s true people are oppressed by the kingdom of darkness but when you are repenting and you’re following.
How quickly can Satan be put under our feet?
Short answer: Very quickly; Jesus put Satan under His feet in the desert with three scriptures.
▶ 28:16 God you can you can quickly put that kingdom under your feet okay. It’s and and I go to the example of Jesus Christ when he was baptized and went into the desert he put Satan under his feet how quickly very quickly and how many scriptures did he use he used three g Satan tempted Jesus and Jesus put him under his feet quickly and we can do the same thing you can use God’s word you can use prayer and praise like this morning your your act of praising God this morning pushed and stilled and freeze the enemy in your life and so will the scriptures the scriptures will they’re they’re they’re an active like a sword you know it’s a weapon you know you have a defense right but then you have the active uh offense and the word of God is an offense it’s important to remember that and use that so we need to remember to take on the goal of becoming a disciple God is he’s distinguishing between people that just believe and the people that are disciples so let’s become a disciple.
Scripture in this part
Matthew 4:1-11 (NKJV)
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’ ” Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
— Matthew 4:1-11 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 28:16 (quoted; reference not named in the message)Romans 16:20 (NKJV)
And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
— Romans 16:20 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 28:16 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What happened to Lazarus the beggar?
Short answer: Not the Lazarus raised from the dead; the beggar died and angels carried him to Abraham’s bosom with a celebration.
▶ 29:33 Amen we’re going to look at the story of the rich man and Lazarus Lazarus not the Lazarus who ro who God raised from the dead but a different Lazarus he was the poor man he a beggar in Luke chapter 16 verse 19 we want to read this real quick and pull some very important things out of it understand some things the rich man and and just a reminder this is all in red letters what does that mean Jesus Jesus spoke it okay it wasn’t didn’t come from somebody else it was Christ’s parable okay there was a rich man clothed in purple fine linen and prospered every day okay we got a rich guy he’s prospering every day he’s got money coming out of his ears he’s doing great uh Lazarus was a beggar which was laid at the gate at his gate at the at the rich man’s gate full of swords no prosperity. Obviously and the beggar died and he was carried by angels into Abraham’s bosom so there was a a lot of uh excitement when the beggar when Lazarus died right he died and the angels were like.
▶ 30:41 Wo oh man we get to have one of our people come on up and they come on down they shake his hand and say welcome good to see you and the angels are rejoicing in heaven and they’re excited and the beggars like oh where am I. He’s just floored and happy I mean I would be you you see an angel my goodness wow and everybody smiling at you the rich man died and he was. Buried that’s different isn’t it no.
Scripture in this part
Luke 16:19-22 (NKJV)
“There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
— Luke 16:19-22 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 29:33Is hell real?
Short answer: Jesus makes it plain: in hell the rich man lifted his eyes in torment and cried for mercy; you can’t manipulate anybody there.
▶ 31:16 Celebration he’s dead in the grave uh nobody’s coming to carry. Him and it says in the next thing in hell he lifted his eyes in torments he cried out and said Abraham have mercy on me send Lazarus to cool my tongue I am tormented in these flames so first of all a lot of people don’t believe in hell Jesus Christ is making it clear there’s a hell amen not he not hard to understand and uh he lifted up his eyes in torments people think that hell is a place where they’re going to be with their friends oh my friends and I were going to we’re going to party in hell we got the we got the room reserved we we’ve got the place reserved where we’re going to be in hell we’re going to be partying it’s not how it’s going to be you’re going to be alone you’re going to be isolated you’re not going to be able to be with your friends it’s going to be horrible awful I mean you don’t want that place believe.
▶ 32:17 Me and here he is crying out for mercy have mercy on me you’re you’re not going to be able to uh manipulate anybody down there maybe you’re used to it up in earth being able to control people you know use your words to get what you want people can be manipulative maybe you can talk yourself out of a situation really well it’s not going to work up. There cuz Christ he can hear your thoughts he has all the evidence he knows what you’re after and he knows what truth is and when you stand before him you’re going to recognize that too you’re going to be exposed see on earth you can come up with all kinds of you can say oh well well you don’t have any proof Christ has proof God has. Proof you know yeah I can’t prove any I can’t prove.
Scripture in this part
Luke 16:23-24 (NKJV)
And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’
— Luke 16:23-24 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 31:16What will be exposed before God?
Short answer: Your heart and your works; that’s why we repent and confess before Him.
▶ 33:09 Anything you can only make a bunch of assumptions but I don’t have video cameras I don’t have all this but God he knows. Everything and your your heart’s going to be exposed before him your your works are going to be exposed before him. Amen that’s why we repent before God that’s why we come to God and we confess before him he knows what’s going. On you don’t need to come to me you don’t need to go to you know you you don’t confess your sins to me or some pastor you confess them to God he knows what’s happening and you know he. Knows so you’re not going to be able to talk your way out of it. And then he says send Lazarus to cool my tongue hey that that guy used to be at my gate you know uh I would throw in some crum sometimes he used to work for me I send him over here he used to work for me send Lazarus to cool my tongue you’re not in charge anymore rich.
Will success get you to heaven?
Short answer: No; God is the boss, and good deeds, giving money or being a millionaire won’t get you there.
▶ 34:19 Man you’re not in charge in hell you can’t boss anybody around anymore who’s the boss. God is the boss no Rita is not the boss in. Heaven the spiritual body can see can feel can taste talk it can do everything the phys physical body does but it can’t. Die it’s important to just recognize this you know I don’t want to go there I want to be furthest as I can be from there but you got to know it’s real all. Right this is the beggar a great gulf there’s a great chasm a great uh distance a a space between Lazarus and the rich man you cannot pass from here and Lazarus cannot pass to there this is the angel answering him in your lifetime you received good things Lazarus received evil things but now he has comforted and you are tormented now we’re going to understand why here in a moment but it’s not because you know being successful is not going to get you to heaven giving people a bunch of money you got people online they’re they’re handing out money to people and they’re giving things to people and uh.
▶ 35:46 Free money this guy over here he’s always passing out money to everybody that’s not going to get him to. Heaven because he did a good deed. Of giving somebody. Money being successful is not going to get you to heaven he’s a a millionaire that’s not going to get him to heaven getting your success I mean today right now we think you know we equate success uh money success with uh spiritual success and it’s not true not that being successful in money is. Bad but that’s not going to get you to heaven being poor is not going to get you to heaven you know if you want to go live in skid row and say oh well I want to get my make sure I can get into eternity by being poor that’s not going to get you into heaven either there’s poor people in heaven too I’m in hell.
What key does the rich man give us?
Short answer: He begged for someone to warn his brothers so they would repent; repentance is the key.
▶ 36:45 Too he said please warn my brothers res resurrect Lazarus and have him be sent to my brothers and the angel answered and said they have Moses and the prophets let them them hear them if someone rose from the dead they will repent and so the rich man gives us the key and it’s simply this if some that we need to. Repent repent means to turn from. Sin he also the rich man also here is saying warn my brothers we don’t want to wait to warn people of the coming judgment and I mean it seems and it seems hard to do. Right we don’t like to be rejected we don’t want to be unkind but uh what God is is helping us recognize we’re going to be in heaven and we’re going to see people that we know that we could have told about.
Scripture in this part
Luke 16:27-31 (NKJV)
“Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”
— Luke 16:27-31 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 36:45Is believing alone enough?
Short answer: He says get away from the extreme faith that just believing gets you to heaven; repentance is key. God has spoken by His Son.
▶ 39:09 God can use you even if you do it wrong. Amen and we got to get away from the extreme faith that uh just believing is going to get you to heaven no the part that he’s mentioning here is what they will what. Repent repentance is. Key Hebrews chapter 1:2 God has in these last days spoken to us by his son mark chapter 16:9 Jesus rose from the dead so the rich man is saying if somebody rose from the grave then they would believe well Jesus is risen from the dead amen and people still reject Christ cuz they want proof I mean it happened 2,000 years ago and they want proof they want to well you this is 2,000 years ago there’s no there’s no uh cameras all right there were no there was no technology back then they wrote it down that’s not good enough for you well you know what if you go into a church service and you praise God and open up your you know what’s going to happen he’s going to come you can meet God for.
Scripture in this part
Hebrews 1:2 (NKJV)
has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
— Hebrews 1:2 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 39:09Mark 16:17-18 (NKJV)
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
— Mark 16:17-18 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 39:09 (quoted; reference not named in the message)What did Jesus preach?
Short answer: The time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe. Unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
▶ 40:23 Real see that’s the greatest proof when you exercise this stuff and you do this stuff confess with your mouth he actually comes and does it and he’ll do it today in in October. 2023 that’s the proof God in his power will fulfill and keep true to his word Mark chapter 1:15 the time is fulfilled the kingdom of God is at hand repent repent and believe the gospel now I I’m just mentioning some things here to remind you Christ himself in red letters here mark chapter 1:15 he says what. Repent that means turn from sin believe the gospel turn from your sin put your faith in the gospel put your faith in.
▶ 41:20 Christ he said it. Himself Luke 13:3 unless you will repent you will all likewise perish it’s a very important it’s very important you know you we repent of our disbelief we repent of our sin you know we got to turn from a few things and you got to keep turning from it amen like a disciple he keeps turning he keeps adjusting he keeps growing acts. 17:30 these times of ignorance God overlooked but now commands all men everywhere to what. Repent he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained that’s. Christ this repentance is very important it’s a great tool that God has provided you may have murdered somebody you may have killed somebody you may have committed horrible sexual immorality you may have done lying and stealing you may have been a horrible person all your life.
