A Moral Church - May 28, 2023: full transcript and answers
Gray boxes are our own short answers and summaries.
The world needs examples, not slogans. A moral church shows that sin has consequences and God’s correction brings blessing. The wise receive rebuke and grow; like Ezra, trust God over man; and accept His chastening to share in His holiness.

How does he mark Memorial Day?
Short answer: Thanking those who died to protect us—but who will protect us from hell? Christ.
▶ 26:26 You may find your seats this morning I’d like to welcome you this morning I want to wish you a happy Memorial Day thank you for joining us online it’s good to be in God’s house. Minimum on memorial day tomorrow we honor and mourn those who died while serving in the u.s armed forces and they died in an effort to protect America from invasion and destruction. And normally this is an overt attack it’s obvious it’s. Somebody declares war or something that’s easily seen. It’s an attack of violence and we have service members who have fought and died for our country. And tomorrow is our day to honor and respect give honor and respect to those people who risked their lives for us amen.
▶ 27:29 And we are very thankful for those people. I was always taught to stand for the flag give during the pledge of allegiance in school at the Christian school I went to which was this one. And we were taught to respect the flag. But not above God right amen. And that’s the important part the next part we also must remember is that all of us will stand before the judgment seat of Christ. And the question is are we ready for what is next. And those wonderful people that fought and died for our freedom we pray that they. Have. When they stand before God that they can stand guiltless before God with a cleaner conscience.
▶ 28:28 But the question is also in this life I’m sorry in the in the next life who will protect us from hell who has eternal life and as we remember those who died to protect our natural bodies in our country our freedom our ideals we also must remember who has fought and died for our freedom. That we have in eternal life and freedom from the kingdom of darkness amen. And a moral church is needed to remind us of those things Jesus Christ has a goal for his church and that is to be without spot or wrinkle a moral church will have the best effect on the world a moral church will call you to repent from sin a moral church seeks to produce good spiritual friends and family people in the church and teaches that righteousness will save you from judgment.
What is God’s goal for Christians?
Short answer: To be an example in spirit, faith and purity—the world needs examples, not another mantra.
▶ 29:34 That they are a witness that God is good to those who seek him and they show forth the results of God’s correction and we’re going to understand what that means. So here we want to recognize that Christ who fought and died for our freedom is building a church and this is his goal for the church that it would be without spot or wrinkle so that he could bring these things to pass in our lives. In first Timothy 4:12 let no one despise your youth but be an example to believers in word in conduct and love and spirit and faith and purity I don’t know if you guys got the sheets okay you got it great let no one despise your youth whether you’re a young church old people in a church young people in the church doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old that no one despise you but be an example to believers in word the way you talk are you an example to your children are you example to your family and the way you talk are you an example in the way you conduct yourself when you go to school you know it’s a that’s a tough you know load when you go to school I mean I got to be an example.
▶ 31:02 Yeah if you say you’re a Christian you want to be an example see this is God’s goal he wants you to be an example. You can’t just say oh I’ve got forgiveness now I’m going to go to school and I’m going to be a bad example. Amen. In love how do we treat our family how do we treat those at home in spirit in faith in purity I heard recently um we used to go to this event called acquire the fire and I was looking it up and you got these people that have commented on it and I guess they’re all the negative people you know because they’re saying we hate ron loose and they were saying f-bombs to ron lewis and I’m like iran was the one who used to run it if you remember and uh you know that he used to teach purity culture and he’s like oh man that purity culture is stupid it’s wrong I’m like purity culture have you ever read the scriptures.
▶ 32:01 This is the Bible. Be an example in spirit in faith and in what purity. No it’s not like somebody’s some person is trying to suppress you with pure no God is calling us to be pure. I will give myself to you what a living sacrifice what holy and acceptable unto God. You know we commit ourselves to Christ we’re taking on all of that and it takes time yes it takes time you’re not going to be whole and acceptable right away you’re not going to be super pure right away but you should be working toward that and when God says he wants you to be pure do you scoff at that do you push that aside I don’t want that in my life forget that I don’t need that or are you humble and willing to accept his word.
▶ 32:59 Amen. And people. Whether they know it or not they need examples this world doesn’t need another mantra or slogan to live by they need what examples. These times of ignorance got overlooked look now commands all men everywhere to what repent. Because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained. Very important to remember that in righteousness. People need to learn righteousness they need to observe it they need to see somebody doing it they need to see somebody’s mouth how they are controlled how they behave right amen.
▶ 33:51 People need examples to follow how are people that grew up never heard of Jesus never heard of the word of God never heard of the law they don’t know anything and they come in contact with you you want that to be their experience with the truth with righteousness. And when they talk to you and they experience you you are different amen. Your own wickedness will correct you and your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that an evil and bitter thing that you have forsaken the Lord and the fear of me is not in you. As a moral church we have to remind people that there is a consequence to sin these people that were putting down wrong loose there’s a consequence to the sin that they want to commit to the impure things that they want to do.
Scripture in this part
1 Timothy 4:12 (NKJV)
Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
— 1 Timothy 4:12 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 32:01Does sin have consequences?
Short answer: Yes—your sin will correct you, and a moral church has to say it.
▶ 34:51 Right there’s a consequence your sin will correct you and a moral church has got to remind people of that somebody has to preach it and say it for example Hebrews chapter 13 4 says marriage is honorable and the marriage bed is what. Undefiled another word for undefiled is clean. Pure spotless unblemished. Marriage is honorable. Young people got to remember this sex is not bad it is god-given but it is undefiled and pure in what marriage. Amen. But when we do it outside of God’s boundary we have sex before marriage there are consequences.
▶ 35:49 If you have sex before marriage you’re going to have kids too early you’re not ready to bring a kid in the world and then you’re going to start discussing oh should we get rid of this child oh they’re not out of the womb yet well then let’s just kill them. Have you ever observed an abortion in the seen womb have you ever what happens it’s it’s gut-wrenching for a father it’s awful it’s horrible it’s evil. You know I watched all three of my kids come out of the room. We I experienced that I watched it all happen it’s it’s a it’s a crazy thing and to go in and just cut some baby’s neck off it’s wrong. Absolutely wrong and you’re going to be in that decision-making process if you have sex before marriage that stuff that that abortion it’s not a contraceptive.
▶ 36:47 You’ll get sexually sexually transmitted diseases same sex as you’ll find there are a Lot of sexually transmitted diseases being passed along in that area in that area. It’s perverse it’s not natural. God says it’s abominable why does he say it’s abominable one of the reasons is that you have to stop that behavior and give it up. Sex before marriage what’s the solution for that. Get married right. But if you’re having a sex with the same sex you have to stop that relationship. You have to turn from that amen. The solution isn’t getting married to that person no it’s wrong. The new thing is transgender and transsexual.
▶ 37:42 My goodness I don’t want to know what the next new thing is in 10 years things just keep going fast. I mean they have they have surgeries done on their arms right they take the skin off of the arm and they make some kind of penis out of the skin from the arm and I’m like do these people know that’s not how it works. Does a man need to tell them that’s not going to do anything I mean ryan can you imagine putting a piece of skin right here and all of a sudden you’re a man now no I’m sorry that’s not how it works you didn’t know that. Jeez. I’ve been a man a long time that’s not how it works. I mean we laugh but I don’t understand what’s going through people’s head. They’re sexually transmitted diseases in that arena they’re removing sex origins and parts we damage our body because we reject the identity that Christ gave us at the beginning of our lives.
How did God make us?
Short answer: In His image, male and female, from the beginning.
▶ 38:54 You got to remember that Christ has made us in what his image and it says in Genesis that he has made us male and female and Jesus when he was on the earth he said do you not know that God made them male and female from the beginning. So we have to remember as people in this world when you go and try to change those things you are changing what God has given you from the day you were conceived. The scriptures say before I formed you in the womb I knew you I knew you as a girl I knew you as a boy I knew you I created you I gave you an identity from the beginning. You can’t go and say oh I had these feelings when I was four years old God knew you before that God gave you an identity before that.
▶ 39:58 Eight years old or when I was a teenager I began to have these thoughts and I changed I had the all these chains yeah you changed but God from the beginning has known you and has given you an identity. You are made in his image and his likeness. Sex with animals perverse. If this becomes the new thing I’m sure more stds will come out of that. If we have some kind of sexual animal revolution or something like that you know there’s it’s it’s not like it’s not like there’s no consequences to these behaviors. Sex with children we are destroying the innocence of these children it’s criminal it’s wrong.
▶ 40:51 It’s harmful. That’s one of the worst things that you can do as a person the worst kind of sins is hurt a child like that it’s wrong. There’s there’s consequences there’s corrections to this stuff. And if no one corrects you for abusing a child God will correct you and he’s not just going to correct he’s going to judge you. Intoxication the consequences from that the correction from that we see it in cities where it’s very extreme you go to san francisco you walk around there’s needles on the ground there’s people living and they are just doing drugs for everybody to see you go to a place like kensington pennsylvania it’s happening there too they’re taking tranquilizer mixed with fentanyl and it.
▶ 41:47 Is destroying their life. That’s an extreme example this is at the extreme I mean the the next step for them is what they’re going to die right. But a more mild example intoxication is a drinking alcohol around your family you’re influencing your children your family your friends to do this thing and though you may have control when they grow up and they take it on they can’t handle it. Proverbs 27:17. The church the moral church will. Have people in the church that will challenge bad behavior as iron sharpens iron so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Scripture in this part
Genesis 1:27 (NKJV)
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
— Genesis 1:27 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 38:54How do the wise respond to correction?
Short answer: Rebuke a wise man and he will love you; a just man will increase in learning.
▶ 42:43 Do not correct a scoffer lest he hate you rebuke a wise man and he will love you give instruction to a wise man and he will still be wiser teach a just man and he will increase in learning how do we respond when we hear wisdom or God’s truth do we scoff. I’ve presented truth to people and they scoff at it. It’s not a you know humble response I don’t need that that that’s stupid. Truths in the Bible that are confirmed more than three times. Do we scoff at his word or are you a wise man. That can handle some rebuke when somebody says hey that was wrong what you did how do you respond you accept that.
▶ 43:41 Maybe you you know maybe they didn’t handle it right you know people when we when we do stuff we never handle anything right. We don’t want we don’t do it a hundred percent I’ll tell you right now as a parent you don’t do it at 100 right you try but you’re not always going to do it 100 right. Okay when you try to correct your child you may have overreacted a little bit but you know what what the truth is they needed to be corrected. And you may have done it wrong or not a hundred percent right but that correction needs to happen and and that’s a wise person they can handle. When it’s not 100 done right. Because they hear the truth that is in it amen. And a wise person wants to respond to God’s truth teach a just man and he will increase in learning.
▶ 44:44 A just man will increase in learning. Not decrease. Amen. And the world needs more wise men. The world needs more young just men that will hear and have a soft heart to hear what God has to say. A Lot of people have a hard heart toward God Psalms 41 verse 9 my own familiar friend in whom I trusted who ate my bread has lifted up his heel against me now that can be somebody who’s turning. Really hard at you or this can be somebody who is trying to influence you to lure you to sin there’s bad friends in this world I mean you you this is America this is california all you got to do is go to school all you got to do is you know bad people badfluences are everywhere.
▶ 45:47 Amen. It’s not popular anymore to be good. It’s popular to be bad. And uh what what are we gonna do. How are we going to respond how are we going to choose to walk in this life Proverbs 13:20. He walks with wise men will be wise with a companion of fools will be destroyed I remember a song when I was a kid by steven curtis chapman he who walks with the wise he who walks with the one we will be one I know and so this was one of my favorite scriptures he walks I wanted to be a wise person that walked uh that became wise amen don’t you want to be wise we don’t want to be companions of fools you got to know how to spot a fool and know that you’re not following a fool.
▶ 46:40 Okay there’s a Lot of foolish behavior going on. And young people I think by now you know what a fool is and what a wise person is I hope. Righteousness will save in Ezekiel chapter 14 verse 12 Ezekiel is reminding us. Something very important he says the word of the Lord came again to me saying son of man when a land begins to sin against me by persistent unfaithfulness or trespassing grievously and I think we’re at that place right. I will stretch out my hand against it even if these three men Noah Daniel jobe were in it they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness and it actually says this in the scriptures they would only deliver themselves by the right can you believe it said that but here we learn what it is that saves them what is it it’s righteousness righteousness is very important and being delivered from the lake of fire and been delivered from punishment in this life I mean.
▶ 48:00 Righteousness it doesn’t hurt you that much okay. It’s not that bad. There’s a Lot of blessings in doing what’s right. I mean when you’re young you’re like oh my gosh I don’t want to do that that’s like the horrible thing I do what’s right ugh. I want to do what’s wrong I remember hearing as a teenager in school I just want to get out I want to sin. Because I went to a Christian school and you know everybody’s just like. They’re brooding with I gotta get out of here. But remember there’s a consequence to all of those things there’s a consequence to being a fool there’s a consequence to the foolish life to the foolish behavior we need.
▶ 48:57 Truth and if I just say we need Christ or we need forgiveness that you need more than that you need to get forgiveness that brings you to repentance that brings you to changing and transformation that brings you to what righteousness. And you’re not going to get it on day one but you have to have a goal Christ’s goal is to bring us to a spotless and glorious church as individuals when you come to Christ you’ve got to set your sights to that goal. Because that is what it’s going to save you amen. Second Peter 2:5 says that Noah was a preacher of righteousness bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly.
Scripture in this part
Proverbs 9:8-9 (NKJV)
Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
— Proverbs 9:8-9 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 42:43Were the righteous in the Bible perfect?
Short answer: No—Noah got drunk, Lot sinned, David fell; Daniel and Job stood out.
▶ 49:50 It’s it’s important to understand why what did Noah do why did God bring the flood because people were ungodly they were sinning they were wicked and Noah was doing his job and he was preaching righteousness you know of all the things that we preach you know I can’t just go out there and just only pre-righteousness I can’t just go out there and only preach forgiveness I got to have that whole message but I can’t leave out righteousness. Right somewhere we’ve got to get that across to this generation to this era in our time. It’s not just accepting Christ it is also repenting and heading toward a glorious spotless church. And you know that Noah.
▶ 50:47 Got drunk after. He got off the ark maybe he was just you know he wanted a break I mean he’d even working on that thing for a hundred years. And he was on the ark now for a year he’s like oh my gosh it’s finally all over let me make some uh graves graves to sound great um oh is that wine over there let me try some of that and he starts drink he gets drunk and uh he exposes himself. You know the one time you have him messing up but he he changed after that he didn’t do it again and we got to remember we we gotta you know yeah we mess up we sin but we’ve got to turn from it you know we all made mistakes amen but we got to turn from it we got to put it behind us.
▶ 51:38 Um luckily Lot. Unlike Lot Lot had sex with his children if you remember that he got drunk and had sex with his two daughters which is wrong. Um David David had uriah killed but Noah his sin didn’t bring him to do that right he got it early enough to where you know he only cursed his son oh my goodness that’s not good either but we have to be very careful.
▶ 52:14 We have to be very careful Daniel he was righteous if you look in the scriptures he was righteous job he blamed God for his problems but that was about it he lost everything I mean we don’t want job’s uh testimony coming on us amen nobody wants that but job was righteous and the scriptures are reminding us here that their righteousness is what was going to save them we’ve got to remember that Matthew 5:20 Jesus says to the people he says I say to you unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees you will by no means enter the kingdom you got to remember that they wanted to kill Jesus and they came up with a plan to kill Jesus to murder Jesus can you imagine we got a religious person today oh I’m going to send you out are you guys over there can you guys go get that guy take him out do the thing where you wrap your hand around him and show you know what the what is that stuff called.
▶ 53:20 Laughs. He’s like he says I got this covered and we take somebody out why because we hate them that’s wrong. They hated Christ so much they wanted to kill him why because he’s speaking the truth I mean that’s that’s. You’ll wrong by no means enter the kingdom of God our righteousness needs to. Rise get up and also in this scripture in Ezekiel 14 21 we learn what God uses he uses the sword he uses famine uh beasts and pestilence and I’m thinking to myself how does he how is he using beast I have not seen that example uh but what I’m sure one of them you guys can tell me later.
▶ 54:16 And if you think about it we have a Lot of division and war going on in our own country today and it’s more subtle than we’re used to it may not be like uh back in the day when David and goliath came together and the armies were on opposing sides and you can see it you know what’s happening uh but you if we look in our country today we have a Lot of division we have a division in our country of what is right and what is wicked and good and evil. And righteousness is being called wicked today and wickedness is be called right. And uh covet if kovid was a natural thing then it was a pestilence that affected the whole world maybe he’s trying to wake us up amen and if it was not natural if it was deployed by a government then we have an act of war again and that’s not good either.
▶ 55:11 Right. We have to wake up to these things that God may be doing to wake us up we can’t just be like oh that’s just you know that’s just living in this life no God may be trying to wake us up and get us to. Change Ezra chapter 8 verse 21. Ezra. Was one of the men who went back to Israel after being in captivity the king of Persia got some people together and sent them back to Israel to restore it. And Ezra was one of those people and he got his people together going back to Israel and they proclaimed a fast a fast is where you don’t eat for a time and they humbled themselves before God to seek from him the right way and for them and for the little ones and all their possessions.
What did Ezra do?
Short answer: He was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers, so they fasted and God answered.
▶ 56:17 So they were committed and he was ashamed to request from the king of Persia an escort of soldiers of horsemen to help against the enemy on the road so he was ashamed he didn’t want to ask for help and this is why. Because we had spoken to the king and said the hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek them how many of you guys have heard these slogans before right you’ve seen him on memes oh God is with me God is with wherever I go and now Ezra has to take that scripture and his saying and he’s actually got to put it into action. Amen and so he’s got to trust God here and so they they do some fasting and they’re praying and they really are coming to God and summoning him and requiring him and saying God we are about to embark on a trek here and we need your protection.
▶ 57:16 And he also says. But his power and his wrath are against all who forsake him so he’s about to go through this journey and on this path and the enemy is going to come and he is got to trust God here that God is going to fight for them. And he said this to the king of Persia and the king of Persia is not somebody who’s serving God the king of Persia is just facilitating all this he’s not serving God he doesn’t know God so Ezra here he is challenging also the king of Persia saying hey if you’re going to live alive. And not seek God and not follow God and reject God and be against and forsake him God is going to be against you and that is what has happened to the king of Persia or the Persian empire you know that it ended amen.
▶ 58:24 In verse 23 it says we fasted and entreated our God for this and he answered our prayer we need that kind of commitment toward God we need that kind of faith. See that’s not just belief that’s faith that’s real faith. Ezra they didn’t have a great army they were they had a bunch of possession I think they had even gold that they were taken back I mean they were a target and they had to put their trust in God. And God brought them through. Last week we were talking about correction and there’s a Lot in this message about correction being corrected by God Hebrews chapter 12 verse 10 they indeed talking about fathers natural fathers like uh there’s several fathers here this morning father’s listening online they fathers indeed for a few days chasing their children as seen best to them but uh.
Scripture in this part
Ezra 8:21-23 (NKJV)
Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions. For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.” So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.
— Ezra 8:21-23 (NKJV)▶ Hear it at 56:17Why does God chasten us?
Short answer: For our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness; afterward it yields righteousness.
▶ 59:43 But God chastens us for our own profit he chastens us because he wants to improve our lives he wants us to improve who we are that we may what be partakers of his holiness. God wants to bring us to his holiness. That we would be partakers not just talking about his holiness not just pointing to it over it’s over there not just being like oh that’s God over there he’s holy me I don’t know I’m over we’re in our uh we’re sinner saved by grace. We’re sinners saved by grace I’m just a sinner saved my dream. Is that what the scriptures say you sure are a sinner saved by grace but you know what else you are you’re a child of God.
▶ 1:00:44 And the child of the God is somebody who he wants to chase him and become and bring to a partaker of his holiness. No chastening seems to be joyful for the president oh thank you for chasing me God oh man that was wonderful experience how would you rate that experience michael I would rate that a 10 out of 10. That was a great chastening experience how many ever had said that at the end of one of those huh. Can I give God a review of stars where’s my where’s my blog for that. But painful nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it how many understand.
▶ 1:01:40 How important it is to allow God to chasten you if you need chastening let God chasten you let him correct you why because at the other end he’s going to produce fruit out of your life out of he’s going to produce the fruit of righteousness out of your life. Are you willing to go through the training somebody who stays in the training is somebody who hasn’t left you you have to stay you can leave the military you can go what awol right. You can get dishonorably dishonorably discharged. But if you stay in there they are going to transform you into a soldier. You may be a an experienced soldier but if you keep going.
▶ 1:02:34 You may have come in inexperienced not able to do uh anything or not able to go over but now you have training and now you can build on that training experience and somebody who is lethal for the armed forces and we need that for God’s house. We as we’re saying today we are what the army of God and we need to become lethal for God’s purposes and God’s goals lethal you know to the kingdom of darkness go you know we’re not going to out and kill anybody right. Amen. Scripture in this part
Hebrews 12:10-11 (NKJV)
For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
