A Different Spirit - April 21, 2024: full transcript and answers

▶ 0:12 Good morning everybody thank you for joining us we’re going to get in the scriptures this. Morning. Um good to be in God’s house last week we were talking about uh the children of Israel coming out of Egypt and how we we showed that there there was a difference between the spirit that. The Israelites had and the spirit that Joshua and Caleb had and they had a different. Spirit so in. Review in numbers chapter 14:24. Says my servant Caleb because he has a different spirit in him and has followed me fully Joshua the son of nun in numbers chapter.

▶ 1:09 27:18 Joshua the son of Nun a man in whom is the spirit lay your hand on him and so because they had the spirit these two men had a different a good report of the promised land they said let us go up at once and take possession for we are all we are well able to overcome it they said the land is a good land the Lord and if the Lord delights in us he will bring us into the land a land which flows with milk and honey only do not rebel against the Lord do not nor fear the people of the land their protection has departed from them and the Lord is with us do not fear them and so these men because they had a different spirit they had a different message they had a different report after visiting the promised land. And the spirit of God made Joshua and Caleb think different about their situation and we need that in our lives today I definitely do because sometimes I look at my situation and you you know it’s tough you got a lot of obstacles in your way and you you need help and that’s the spirit of God the spirit of God will help.

▶ 2:22 You Deuteronomy 34:9 Joshua was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him and the Israelites listened to Joshua and did what the Lord had commanded Moses so because Joshua was filled with the spirit the Israelites listened to him and so we see the effects that the spirit has on Joshua here and this the the effect that we want the spirit of God to have on us the Holy Spirit can affect and give you power to live live your daily life in your home and at your Job they saw the leadership and wisdom in Joshua that he had power to make consistent right and timely decisions and so we want the effects that the spirit has we’re reminded last week in Isaiah.

▶ 3:20 11:2 the spirit of the l that the there are seven parts to the spirit as uh illustrated by the candlestick that was in the holy place of the tabernacle there were seven candle candles burning and they represent the seven spirits of the Lord Isaiah 11:2 the spirit of the Lord will rest on him the spirit of wisdom of understanding counsel might of knowledge and the fear of the Lord and Joshua and Caleb had uh these qualities they had wisdom to make a different to make a different decision they had the wisdom from above everybody else was going based off of their what they saw and what they evaluated with their eyes but Joshua and Caleb saw things with the spirit and they had wisdom to make a better choice and you have to remember only two men had to go against 12 and so they were the minority there were 12 spies and they had to disagree and line up with God they also had to disagree with the million plus people that were there that were afraid and listened to the other 10 and so it takes a lot of God’s spirit in you to be able to speak a different.

▶ 4:38 Message they had understanding Joshua and Caleb understood the power of God over the power of the people of Canaan they had counsel and guidance they knew that if God delighted in them and if they would not fear and they they came up with all these things because they got counsel from the spirit of God they knew that the the might and the strength of God would come and enable them to overcome the canaanites even though the canaanites were bigger stronger giants bigger army didn’t matter they knew that if God was with them they could overcome and you see this spirit is so important in your daily life we need this spirit God uh working in us we face problems all the time as a parent as a spouse as a worker on the job as just trying to uh solve problems in your home and in your life and the spirit of God can enable you to do.

▶ 5:35 That if you’re a young person it’s important for you to not just believe you know that your future is going to be taken care of and you somewhere you have to apply yourself get an education stop wasting your time you live in America you have opportunities at your fingertips use the spirit of God the spirit of wisdom and go out out there learn a job skill if you want to get a job or if you want to open a business learn how to open a business get the job done. Use get some understanding get some wisdom and uh get a future going for your life I want to encourage you young people please don’t just expect life to come and be served on a silver platter you you’ve got to work and the spirit of God will move you to work John 14:1.

▶ 6:31 16 Jesus in red letters he says I will pray and the father he will give you another helper that he may abide with you forever John 14:18 says I will not leave you comfortless I will come to you John 10:30 says I and the father are one so I just gave you all these scriptures so you can have them you can digest him for a moment uh but first we want to recognize here that God says Jesus says he that he may abide with you forever the Holy Spirit is meant to be with us forever and that’s important amen when Jesus ascended he said I will be with you always to the end of the age amen amen and we need God with us we need God working in us we need him every day.

▶ 7:30 But also Jesus here in red letters he’s mentioning and he’s identifying three different. Identities and what what are they he says I Jesus Christ will pray to the who. Father and he will give you another what helper and that helper is what the Holy Spirit so in one scripture Jesus is mentioning three identities but they’re all the same and we also must remember the word of God like it says in John 1:1 don’t forget that the word of God is another identity he says I will not leave you comfortless I will come to you.

▶ 8:12 And what came to them in Acts chapter 2 in Acts chapter 2 the Holy Spirit came to his apostles and his disciples so Jesus is basically equating himself to the Holy Spirit it’s the spirit of God it’s called the spirit of the Lord right who is the Lord Jesus the spirit of the Lord it’s the same person okay but when you talk about Jesus you’re talking about a body that was actually seen that was born on the earth that was crucified so when you talk about Jesus that’s who we’re talking about but he’s still this he’s the spirit okay he ascended up into heaven he’s with the father and he’s the father too he’s all he says I and the father are one so everybody’s the same and you know for us it’s a little confusing but here he is.

▶ 9:12 Showing that everybody all these three identities are the same and so if you feel that you don’t have God his promise is that that he will be with us if you feel that you don’t have him then you might want to seek him amen if you feel that God is not with you you need to go and search him out and I’m not talking about get in your car and drive up to the mountain I’m talking about getting on your knees I’m talking about getting into the scriptures and hearing what he has to say to you.

▶ 10:00 After the service uh if you’re want a question we can talk God bless you Roland right a awesome 1st Samuel 10:6 the spirit of the Lord will come upon you mightily and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man uh we want to point out some two men in uh four men in the Bible two of them had the spirit upon them and Saul king Saul in Samuel chapter 10:6 the spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily and he prophesied and it says he that God changed him into another man changed his heart so before he was afraid and and uh he didn’t want to be king but God changed him and he became a different. Person and I I can’t get into it I mean there’s like six chapters here of his story right but king Saul later on he had this change in his life but he uh accepted some parts and rejected other parts okay the spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him and why did it depart from him Samuel says in chapter 15:23 because you have.

▶ 11:23 Rejected the word of the Lord he has also rejected you so so Saul rejected God’s word and he. Disobeyed and what Saul uh we what we want to understand is you can’t just you know have the spirit of God upon you and live a life of disobedience to God somewhere you have to decide am I going to listen to his commandments follow his word and keep his word so if you want to get the spirit of God out of your life disobey God if you want to keep the spirit you know obey him and if you mess up remember you have an advocate with the father Jesus Christ the righteous and we can get back in right relationship with God we cannot expect to have only the anesthetic without the surgery.

▶ 12:18 Saul he liked what made him feel good and he liked to look good in front of the Israelites he liked the spirit of God coming on him and prophesying and oh I’m spiritual and he liked it when all the people really uh looked on him and saw him as a great. Man. But he did not want what makes you good he wanted what made him feel good and look good but not what makes you good and that is obedience to his word and o as Samuel said obedience is better than sacrifice so very important to remember that going on in Judges 14:6 the spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands that he might have torn uh like he might have torn a young.

▶ 13:23 Goat two chapters later. Samson uh is with Delilah and she said says hey the Philistines are upon you and he awoke from his sleep he thought to himself I will escape as before shake myself free but he did not know that the Lord had left him and what I’m merely trying to point out here is that even though these men had the spirit of God upon them because of their decisions and their choices and their relationship with God it left them and you don’t want that in your life amen you want to keep God’s spirit with you. And if we remember here it left them because Samson uh didn’t really think it would leave you. Know he didn’t believe that his disob obedience would make him lose his strength Delilah pressed him three times about where his strength came from and she tried all of these times to do what he said would make him weak I I still think about this I’m like why is this guy so thick you know after the first time you like whoa I don’t want to be around this woman anymore she’s trying to take away my strength but at some point he probably didn’t believe that if his hair was cut off that he would lose his strength.

▶ 14:49 He didn’t believe that his disobedience would cause him to lose the spirit and he was one disobedience away from losing the spirit he had already been sexually immoral he had already uh had wine which as a Nazirite he wasn’t supposed to do there were things he wasn’t supposed to do and he was breaking all these things and he held on to the one thing his hair and finally he gave that up and he thought God was still with him and he. Wasn’t and that’s a that’s not a good place to be in you know God is being patient with Samson hey stop doing these things repent and turn from this Delilah woman get away from her but he wouldn’t do. It in Ephesians chapter 4:30 it says do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God do not grieve do not cause grief on the Holy Spirit you know the Holy Spirit wants to be in us he wants to be with us and we sit there and we give God the finger we give him the hand we disobey his word it’s that doesn’t mix that doesn’t make.

▶ 16:06 Sense we should want to honor him and that’s what that spirit as we learned has seven parts right wisdom understanding and that last one is what the fear of the Lord and the scriptures say by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. Amen the scriptures are powerful the scriptures are uh in unison we’re bringing up scriptures in Isaiah and judges we’re all over the Bible and they all are it’s a it’s a unified message it’s powerful Daniel chapter8 4: 18 Daniel Nebuchadnezzar says about Daniel the spirit of the holy gods is in you Nebuchadnezzar was not a je he was king of b Babylon he was not of the people of Israel and he looked at Daniel and he said about him the spirit of God is in you Daniel was uh sought the Lord and helped save his friends and the other magicians that weren’t necessarily is from Israel they were his enemies he saved his friends and his enemies from destruction by interpreting the king’s.

▶ 17:30 Dream the mother of uh Nebuchadnezzar’s son Belshazzar maybe would just say she’s queen I don’t know why he doesn’t say queen Daniel chapter 5:11 the mother of Belshazzar said about Daniel he has the spirit of the holy gods in him he was found to have insight intelligence and what wisdom like that of the gods he was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding. Those three words they line up with Isaiah 11 right the spirit of God is in Daniel and he is has the things that the spirit says that that it is he has the spirit of wisdom he has the spirit of knowledge he’s got the spirit of understanding he’s got it all he has the results he possessed the attributes of the spirit I want to possess these attributes.

▶ 18:29 Do you want to have attain and obtain. These attributes of the spirit of God Genesis 39:3 Joseph Potiphar his master saw that the Lord was with him in Genesis 39:20 while Joseph was in prison wrongfully in. Prison because of the me too movement. While Joseph was in prison because a woman Joseph was in prison the Lord was with. Him Genesis 41:38 Pharaoh asked them can we find anyone like this man one in whom is the spirit of God so the spirit of God is in Joseph as well and he was able he had wisdom and understanding he was able to interpret dreams with the spirit of God.

▶ 19:31 And these men made the transition from having the spirit of God upon them and with them to having the spirit of God in them and Joshua and Daniel became leaders that people followed in their generation because they made the transition and we must do the same. Amen and part of possessing the spirit is obedience as s Samuel said to Saul obedience is better than sacrifice and both Joseph and Daniel obeyed God even when it was unpopular and though they were persecuted Daniel remember he purposed in his heart not to defile himself do you remember that scripture Daniel as a young man he set himself apart he didn’t want to just do whatever Nebuchadnezzar told told him to do he wasn’t going to eat the meat he wasn’t going to follow their rules he’s going to follow God’s rules and God backed him up Joseph as well his brothers hated him they hated him because you know they were doing what was wrong and they he would walk up and give a bad report about them and they would just hate his guts.

▶ 20:52 But Joseph obeyed God even though it was unpopular and though persecuted it’s I’m just bringing this up because we need to. Remember. That it may be unpopular and we may have to go through some uh a battle or a fight but God will be with us and at the end both Joseph and Daniel brought about great deliverance in their land and in their time. Amen and so I want to point out and I want to remind us that God is doing an operation in our spiritual.

▶ 21:34 Man it says in Ezekiel 36 as I have mentioned many times now this is the new covenant that he will give us a new heart and put a new spirit in us he will remove from your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh he will put his spirit in us and move you to follow my his decrees and be careful to keep my laws see that whole scripture right there sounds to me like an operation it sounds to me like I’m coming to God and to his operating table and that he wants to do a surgery in me and that’s what he wants to do in us so God comes with his presence he comes with uh the power he comes with his love because he’s trying to get in to do that operation.

▶ 22:30 And God is asking us today do we just want that feeling of love the feeling of his presence. Without the change the surgery the operation and is we have to be careful not to reject that he wants to make a change in. Us this morning I could feel the presence of God in this. Room uh I hope you did too. I hope you felt the spirit of God this morning but we also have to have an ear to hear we also got to let God come and change us on the inside I know as a young person I needed that I would go down to the altar during the during the altar time and I would pray and I would I would have my time with God and I would let him work on me.

▶ 23:22 Amen and we need to let God change. Us and God is asking us today are we rejecting his change the Holy Spirit is a teacher in John 14:26 he will teach you all things he will bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you sorry this should be in red letters this is Jesus talking when the helter the helper comes the spirit of truth he will testify of me the Holy Spirit’s job is to bring Jesus’s words back to our remembrance and he’s talking to his disciples now if you were to tell me something today I guarantee you in a probably a week I give it a week or less I will forget what you told me. Okay now Jesus is saying all these things and the disciples are hearing all these things right and they don’t know that they’re going to write the book or maybe they wrote it while Jesus was doing it I don’t know but you know somewhere they had to remember what Jesus said right otherwise we would be here without Christ’s words and we’d be in big trouble I mean gosh I am so glad that I have the New Testament and the gospels amen aren’t you glad I’m.

▶ 24:48 Glad and it was because the Holy Spirit came to these disciples and brought his words back to their remembrance and that’s important it uh the the Holy Spirit comes to remind us of his truth of the truth of Jesus Christ I’m here this morning I’m not here to tell you about my way of doing things or what I think is the best I’m here to share and remind you what Jesus has already said and why it’s powerful and let the living word of God change us amen amen. So it’s not someone else’s message we need to be reminded of the spirit of God will. Remind us of his message John chapter.

▶ 25:44 16:8 when the comforter come when it when he has come he will convict the world of sin of righteousness and of judgment and that’s important you got to let the Holy Spirit do its job if you feel conviction if we feel convicted I you know we want to feel that conviction that that that means the spirit is working that means the spirit’s doing its job and we all need to. Change you know if you’re living a a sinful life let his Holy Spirit come and convict. You that is that’s his job and he wants to do that for the whole world it’s not he’s not just pointing you out he’s not singling you out he is going after the whole world every country. Every part every every area of this planet he the Holy Spirit is going and convicting the world of sin.

▶ 26:40 In 1970s over here I got a picture of uh that’s Lonnie Frisbee and uh what’s his name Chuck Smith and they’re out there at Corona del Mar and they’re having the baptism. And there was a move of of God back in the 70s called the Jesus people movement on the left here this is the Hebrides revival on the Isle of Lewis um it’s near Britain somewhere and that he’s this preacher he’s with two older ladies that prayed and asked God to come and and do a work and and and God showed up and moved and God came with his spirit and he would move on these young people and convict them and and they weren’t even in the church they were outside somewhere and the spirit of God would come and move and convict them and they would run to the church and say I need is there room for me is there room for me in the kingdom of God they’re crying out to God because why the spirit is in it and uh whether the Holy Spirit is doing something big or if he’s doing something.

▶ 27:54 Small that’s his job to convict the world world of sin his the spirit of God always backs up his word and we experienced that a few weeks ago uh the week after Easter at the park you know God’s spirit was moving and and you know that God was working on. People and it wasn’t just Calvary Chapel but many other churches were reaching people during that time why because the spirit was in it amen Miss Woods reminds me all the time it wasn’t just Calvary Chapel where’s she at.

▶ 28:31 Oh it wasn’t just Calvary Chapel we were there too and why because the spirit was in it and he was moving love when the Holy Spirit comes it comes he comes with love Romans chapter 5:5 God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit we’re not talking about the uh the affection kind of love like when when Karma walks in the room I whoo there she is we’re talking about love that is patient kind uh the love of God it’s powerful God’s love has been poured out into our hearts to the Holy Spirit Galatians 5:22 the fruit of the spirit is love Romans 15:30 I urge you by the love of the spirit to join me in my struggle by praying to God these are just some scriptures I’m pointing out that show that this Holy Spirit is about love love and the real expression of the Holy Ghost when you say if you say you have the Holy Spirit you should be expressing love love for God’s people love for your spouse love for your children love for your parents you know if you’re a young person you say you got the spirit oh do you love your parents.

▶ 29:48 If you’re a parent if you’re a spouse do you love you know this spirit is going to affect the relationships you have it’s going to affect your mouth. Amen the Holy Spirit wants to glorify honor and praise Jesus if I were to ask you today do you have the Holy Spirit uh you know answer in your mind do you have the Holy Spirit in you answer in your mind okay now the next question is are you a worshiper because someone who has the spirit of God will worship because the spirit wants to worship and glorify and honor. God so if you’re having trouble worshiping check your Holy Spirit or say Holy Spirit get me in gear.

▶ 30:45 Right amen Luke chapter 24:49 Jesus says stay in the city until you be have been clothed with power from on high I have given you authority to trample on snakes scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy nothing will harm. You Galatians 5:22 the fruits of the spirit are love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness. Self-control and so the spirit of God enables us gives us power to overcome the kingdom of darkness and grow into the kingdom of God. So in the past did you have hatred toward God did you have anger toward your family to your spouse to your children to your parents the spirit of God will come and transform that.

▶ 31:45 Amen why because he comes with love the spirit of God is the fruit of the spirit is love the next is joy we can overcome depression and sadness joy that no man can take away and I know a lot of Christians are like oh don’t tell me. That and uh they’ll say that Christians make them feel bad because they’re depressed I’m what I’m saying is give the spirit of God a chance there’s a lot of prescriptions out there you can go and you can talk to a psychiatrist they can give you pills but what about the prescription of the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit and its joy you see God claims that he has a solution for your depression and for your sadness and if you haven’t got it you need to keep seeking it until you possess it like Joseph and like Daniel both of those.

▶ 32:48 Men. Endured pain in their life Daniel he was an orphan he had no family he was forced to work for this king as a teenager Joseph was kicked out by his family they they they they made up a story that he was. Murdered he was sold into slavery worked for pfer he was wrongly accused by piper’s wife and sent to prison these men endured. But Joseph he hung on Joseph had joy Joseph had. Peace Daniel had peace Daniel had.

▶ 33:45 Joy why because the spirit was in. Them and that’s what this spirit does gives us power. You know if we’re not patient the spirit of God the fruit of that spirit is to make you somebody who is patient with your parents patient with your children patient on the job and with people man this week I messed up on on the job my my mouth man I gotta get I gotta hey spirit kick me get me in gear. Faithfulness are we loyal in the home can uh the home count on you as a mother as a father or even as a growing.

▶ 34:39 Teen gentleness are we bossy are we pushy are we leading by example do we let the spirit give us power to change those areas and a big one self-control self-control overcomes being out of control and losing your temper and the rest and so are you someone who is out of control are you someone who loses their temper God has offering his Holy Spirit to change you to change your outof contr control behavior and so these fruits of the Holy Spirit will positively impact your relationships your work and your home people in the Old Testament and the New Testament had the spirit of God in them. Because of the spirit they followed God they stayed consistent and made timely and right decisions you never find Joshua and Caleb committing all kinds of disobedience and breaking God’s commandments his ten commandments you don’t find them uh you know in a pit sad and can’t get out of it for years you know no these men had the spirit of God and when they faced a problem God helped them through it and we’ve got a we’ve got got to lean on God’s spirit.

▶ 36:39 We have a time at the end of the service where we can come and spend some time responding to what we have heard even the worship time that God has spoken to you during the worship time you want to take time this morning to respond before you go home and before we run off we want to give God an opportunity to do his work his surgery and operation in our hearts so I encourage you right now during this time uh I’m going to sing a song and I’m going to invite you to stand but God is asking us this morning are we making the transition to have the spirit of God in us or are we just like the feeling but we accept the spirit’s conviction of sin of righteousness and judgment.

▶ 37:34 Remember the spirit’s not condemning you but he’s trying to convict you so that you can change so he can enable you to change he’s trying to equip equip you to so you can let let him transform your life will we listen to the spirit of truth truth that teaches are we producing the fruits of the spirit in our lives are we letting the power of God. Come so I’d like to invite you to stand and this song is about the spirit and we want to invite the spirit of God to teach us to convict us to come in us let’s pray and ask that God would not just come upon us but that he would do his operation in us this morning giving us a new heart putting his spirit into us let’s lift up our voices right now Lord God we come before you right now Jesus Lord we pray Lord that you fulfill your word in us God Lord that you would take from us a heart of stone a hard heart a hard heart that is hard toward your word that’s not responsive God Lord your heart of flesh a heart Jesus that is willing to hear what you have to say Jesus Lord we pray for a new heart God we pray for your spirit to come God we ask Lord Jesus that you would come and

▶ 39:04 do your surgery and do your operation in our lives God Lord we want to grow Lord the scriptures say that you are the author and the finisher of our faith God Lord that you will complete the good work that you began in us God Lord Jesus we pray oh God come Lord finish that good work God Lord complete that that operation ation that surgery in us this morning Jesus we pray Lord that your word come and make us new Lord let your word come and transform us Jesus arise this morning God arise in my life God I want to let your spirit God move and change me Jesus Jesus Jesus Jesus oh Lord we call on you this morning arise in us oh Lord Jesus arise in us.

▶ 39:58 Lord come with your mighty power Lord give us power Lord Jesus to face the change spirit of the living. God we offer your presence here oh spirit of the living God. We affirm your power here to. Heal. Us and to. Deliv. Us to. Build. Us and to.

▶ 40:53 Change. Us spirit of God God we invite you right now Lord to come and heal Jesus we invite you right now Lord to come and deliver us Lord like we learn in the scriptures God Lord Israel was not delivered until they went through the red sea God and they were delivered from all of their enemies God you destroy the kingdom of darkness and their life Jesus we pray for deliverance to come Lord upon us this morning Jesus by your word by your power God Lord Jesus we want to come through that red sea Jesus. Please Lord change us change us oh Lord spirit of the living.

▶ 41:51 God we offer your presence here Lord spirit of the living. God we affirm your power here to. Heal. Us and to. Deliver. Us oh to. Build us. And to. Change us oh spirit of God oh. Spirit of God.

▶ 42:47 Joshua received the spirit and Moses laid his hands on him and we want to do that today we want to I’d like to invite you to just uh hold each other’s hand or put your hand on someone’s shoulder next to you and we want to pray and ask that this God to come with his spirit to heal to empower to change to deliver to build the person’s life that is next to us as a love for one another let’s pray for one another right now God we lift up our brothers and sisters this morning God Lord we pray that your spirit your mighty’s power would come Lord Jesus Lord God that you would come and you would fill us with your spirit God Lord that we would be able to make wise decisions like Joshua and Caleb did God Lord that we would be able Lord Jesus to be an example and a light to the world God we pray that your spirit would come upon us this morning Jesus Jesus oh king of kings God almighty we pray Lord Jesus we pray for one another right now God we need you Lord we need you Lord to convict us God we need you God to move upon us Lord Jesus Lord we pray oh we pray oh God Lord let your power come Jesus arise in us Jesus arise in us Lord

▶ 44:18 we need you we need you oh living God worthy is the lamb worthy is the king of kings worthy is the Lord of lords. God oh God we invite you Lord we want to be changed Lord we want your power your spirit moving in us Jesus Holy Spirit come oh teach us and guide us spirit of truth oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.

▶ 45:18 Oh come on Lord we call on you Jesus oh. Oh and to. Change. Us spirit of God Lord we invite you right now Jesus we lift you up right now God Lord let your Spirit spirit of the living. God we offer your power here. Lord spirit of the living.

▶ 46:13 God we offer your power here to. Heal. Us and to de. Deliv. Us to. Build. Us and to. Change spirit of God. If you’ve never accepted Jesus Christ this morning I want to remind you some scriptures in Romans 3:23 it says all have fallen short of the glory of God every one of us and Romans 6:23 it says that the wages of our sin the result the payment.

▶ 47:22 Is death in hell.
